Last week, The Mirror claimed that Outstanding' Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson flew to Italy to hold talks with Roma over the possibility of a summer transfer to Serie A, but is there any truth to that particular story?
Johnson recently confirmed that he's in 'talks' with various clubs, and when asked today about the defender's future, his agent, Jonathan Barnett, admitted that:
* The 30-year old is 'looking at many clubs' right now.
* He wants to sign for a new club in a bid to 'turn his career around'.
Barnett further added:
“He [Johnson] wants to play [for] a good club that’s challenging for things. That is where he wants to be. Roma would be a lovely place for him. Ashley Cole absolutely adores it there, and I represent him as well".
Johnson was linked with Roma in November, and at the time, the Daily Mail claimed:
* Roma are 'confident' of signing Johnson.
* The Serie A club believe Johnson has 'more to offer' than Ashley Cole.
* Roma are 'happy' to pay Johnson's £120k-a week (£6.2m per year) wages.
Johnson and his agent seem pretty blase about leaking the defender's intentions to the media, and it smacks of a calculated campaign to pressure Liverpool into making another contract offer. I doubt it will work, though. Johnson is no longer an integral part of the first team, and to be honest, he hasn't been for a long time. i
That said, perhaps Johnson just genuinely wants a new challenge, and that can only be a good thing. British players rarely test themselves in overseas leagues, so good luck to him him if he goes. It hasn't really worked for Ashley Cole, though, who is a far superior player to Johnson.

I'll be surprised if Roma can afford to be paying the likes of Johnson 120k a week and stay within FFP regulations.
ReplyDeletehes pants anyway. experienced for nothing. lets get Depay, Vietto, Sissokho and Felipe Anderson. and maybe Ibrahomovic. we will be deadly and win the Champions League. Vietto better and work harder than Sturridge. Sturridge quality, but he only cares about himself and hogs ball and is only focused on scoring goals. at times its good, but in games like yesterday, we needed the striker to come deep and bring midfielders into play. as we saw, as soon as Sturridge did that once he got assist to Hendo. Sterling is flexible, and comes deep and plays in midfielders whilst also trying to score. Sturridge is a striker who works for himself, and unless hes banging them in hes not so good. i love him but i believe his time with LFC is up unless hes willing to accept second striker role, because we'd love him at LFC but its clear players like Suarez who bring players into play(18 assists last year at LFC) suit our striker role more. against teams like Villa, Burnley at home we can rely on Sturridge but not against City and Chelsea, unless he plays on the wing, because our strikers need to play in the rest of the team. Vietto is brilliant and with 21 goals and 8 assists hes a nightmare stirker
ReplyDeleteI think we should do all we can to get him there... such as pack his bags, fly him on a private jet, and personally drive him to Roma from the airport.
ReplyDeleteGet the Pope involved if need be and tell GJ it's a sign from above.
I see Balotelli has been sending cryptic, weird social media messages again. Still making headlines... Pity he can't make any for playing football...
ReplyDeleteWe should do all we can to get Miralem Pjanic at Liverpool such as... packing his bags, duck taping his arms and legs, putting him on a private jet and forcing him to sign a long term contract with us.
ReplyDeleteGet Fowler involved if need be and tell Pjanic it's a sign from above:)
I don't see anything sinister here. It's just honesty. Liverpool are not making desperate pleas to keep him and he's shopping himself around. Given that he's not sure he'll be staying at Liverpool I think he's more than entitled to tell his agent to find him some other opportunities so that he can weigh them all up. That's all that is happening here. Not everything is a manipulative ploy.
ReplyDeleteHe must be going out of his mind. He needs a good therapist.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they're hoping that when they pay him he doesn't know they don't actually use Lire anymore.
ReplyDeleteSeriously though, wouldn't you be going crazy in his shoes?? I mean, yeah he brought it onto himself early in his career, but being hounded and scrutinized literally 24/7 by people you don't even know, usually about non-news? I'd be coo coo for coco puffs after like a week.
ReplyDeleteFor sure, I think he must be saturated in it, it would be inescapable. Plus when he's not actually playing what else is he going to do to fill his time? Football is great but it's not always a mentally straining activity and if Mario is a thoughtful kind of guy then he'd be constantly stuck in that mindset, wondering what people are saying about him. What would be best for him would be to totally get his head out of social media, leave it to his publicist. And I mean even stop reading the newspapers. It's hard, he's probably interested in football, but maybe he needs other interests.
ReplyDeleteIf the media is to be believed ,GJ was offered a new contract just with much lower wages that he has clearly turned down. Just like Sterling and Henderson , pommy players seem to think they deserve more than they are worth !
ReplyDeleteIs it the players agents responsibility or Liverpool's
ReplyDeletephysiological department ??
I can understand why hendo is stalling as he may be named captain for next season which more than likely would mean he can ask for a captains salary-
ReplyDeleteWhen the headline said outstanding Liverpool star "wants" to quit i was worried but its only Johnson "meh" better off without him and his outrageous wage.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a deal that works for everyone. Johnson gets more play time and his money. Liverpool get him off the books. Roma are happy to pay.
ReplyDeleteHe will be shocked to see Skrtel given the captain's arm band
ReplyDelete...and Liverpool benefit from the absence of his defensive deficiencies
ReplyDeleteor even Can
ReplyDeleteCan is a bit young for the responsibility but Lallana is a good shout if he can maintain his fitness.
ReplyDeleteYea the kid's off his nut. Unless he gets his head right, he'll never realise his potential.
ReplyDeleteLove it! The best comment I've read in a long time..
ReplyDelete"Outstanding"...lol
ReplyDeleteDon't worry lads I've long since started these proceedings. Ive got a roll of duct tape and a club that says Johnson will be gone and Pjanic will be in. Looking for a driver to take the unconscious players to/from the airport. Anyone interested?
ReplyDeleteJason Statham has nothing on me.I'm the real Transporter!
ReplyDeleteI have feeling our wanted faces will be on Crimewatch, but if it means Liverpool getting a quality player.Count me in.
We'll still be able to watch MOTD in jail so it won't be too bad
