VIDEO: See how Coutinho's 'stunning' goal compares to Legend's genius wonderstrikes against Villa and Everton

The Reds go marching on. Liverpool's revival continued apace tonight with a hard-fought FA Cup victory over Bolton, with the glorious highlight being Philippe Coutinho's superb winning goal right at the death.

Post-match reaction:

Brendan Rodgers on LFC's ongoing improvement:

"The team is back at the level technically and in the intensity of the game. It's pleasing because you can see the confidence and even at 1-0 down, we still looked like we were going to create and score goals"

Rodgers on the penalty:

"We went a goal down to what was never a penalty, but our composure and quality after that moment was very good. It [the victory] was justice, in all fairness. Even at 1-0, I expected us to win"

Twitter reaction:

Fabio Borini

"Great win tonight! Through to next round! Looking forward the Derby at the weekend!"

Neil Mellor

"Brilliant FA Cup replay tonight. Huge credit to Bolton for making it so tough for LFC. Stunning Winning goal from Coutinho to send LFC thru"

John Aldridge

"Can gets better every time I see him. Could be a big player in the future for us.Proper football brain too!!coutinho deserved that goal!"

Ray Clemence

"Great goal by Philip Coutinho to win game and keep the cup dream alive"

Rob Jones

"Emre Can has been great tonight .... Getting better every game"

Raheem Sterling

"Great comeback. Well done boys. On to the weekend"

Mamadou Sakho

"We didn't give up and that helped us to snatch this victory tonight in the last minutes"

Coutinho's goal is reminiscent of two classic John Barnes goals from the early '90s:

Barnes vs. Aston Villa: 1990 (Winning goal in the last minute)

Barnes vs. Everton: 1991 (FA Cup 5th round)

Coutinho is not on Barnes' level, but it's fitting that such an amazing goal is scored by a player wearing the fabled number-10 shirt.

In my view, Liverpool should've retired the number 10 when Barnes left the club, but Coutinho is certainly worthy of the shirt, and long may he continue to score goals like this.

  1. In my opinion the passage of play for the sterling goal was of a world class level

  2. I like the assured nature of our back 3 with Can in it- the other players have relaxed visibly.
I must say that Allen and Johnson must be spit roasting BR to keep getting a game like they do. Another anonymous game from Allen- he doesn't fit into the team anymore

  3. Everton are scared of SG though
    He was very average tonight.

  4. Barnes and Henry are my two favourite players ever in the PL

  5. The big question is does Gerrard start in the derby this weekend.....for me no.

  6. Henry was the closest player i've seen to Barnes at his peak for Liverpool. So for their names to be mentioned over the past few weeks when describing Sterling's and Coutinho's goals and attacking play bodes very well for the rest of the season.

  7. 'World class'? And so the gross exaggerations begins...

    ;-)

  8. Coutinho and Sterling scored two wonderful goals tonight in the vein of Barnes and Henry but for me Can was the man of the match tonight. He was very influential in the final stages of the game and the ball he dinked in for Sterling was world class.

  9. He's an unbelievably top, top player !

  10. The only way he starts for me is in place of Lallana

  11. He didn't say Can was world class, he said the pass was. Xavi or Iniesta couldn't have played it any better which I reckon makes it a world class pass. When he does it time and time again, we'll revisit it...Maybe we'll also have a Turkish/German Xavi to go with our Welsh one..

  12. For all you youngsters who are too young to remember him in his pomp:

  13. Great goals all around. Awesome display by Can. I'm not gonna hop on the "Gerrard Replacement" bandwagon, but his presence in the Mid next season certainly won't hurt!

On a side note, Ref was an absolute disgrace. Even Lennon admitted this. All kinds of missed calls, crazy tackling, several incorrect offsides calls, just terrible, terrible match. I'm not even mad about the pen. It actually made some sense compared to some of the other calls (or lack thereof)...

  14. It's kind of goal you need him to score because it means defenders have to take him seriously around the edge of the box. At the moment they are happy enough to sit back and cut off his passing lanes. Score a few more of those and they'll have to shut him down which then opens up space in front of him to slip in the pass to someone else. He clearly has the ability to score those kinds of goals but it does take a good degree of focus, composure and confidence to do it consistently. I think he's really developing those weaker aspects of his game and thankfully he's put that patch of poor form a long way behind him.

The similarity to both Barnes goals is quite eerie. Maybe he's been watching more videos than we give him credit for.

  15. Jaimie, was John Barnes world class for you? He didn't have much of an impact on international stage, so does he qualify for world class status?

    ReplyDelete
  16. stop complaining about the referee please, for he is part of the game it's self, if you are a good and strong team you'll prevail no matter how bad is the ref decision for u................

    ReplyDelete
  17. Jaimie, can you make that short video with the penalty situation? I really want to know was it or not...

    ReplyDelete
  18. Only got to see Barnes' you tube clips, but he was soo good! That elegance was a hat off.. Did you see him live?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Are you trying to convert people to Christianity- prevail no matter how bad is the ref? I mean Real Madrid are not that good...

    ReplyDelete
  20. amazingly good player indeed? Has an acronym that is kinda catchy..

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh yes, he was majestic. Glided over the turf like only a few players have ever done. It was his final ball / shot that set him apart. after beating men, he would put it on a plate/ or stroke it into the net

    ReplyDelete
  22. I am so jelous.. I never got to see Gerrard live.. I'll probably have means to come to Anfield next season, hope he comes on a loan. That would make my year...
JK said something once about Barnes being equivalent of Ronaldo, or better- I tend to believe that from what I've seen...

    ReplyDelete
  23. I personally prefer Barnes- Ronaldo is a better physical specimen, and is better in the air, but he reies on that physicality to beat players and is more reliant on others. For a period, Barnes' free kicks were on another planet and he could beat a man at will.
Can't see Ronaldo converting to a central midfielder as he gets older/ has a major injury that robs him of his speed. If he had an ACL for instance

    ReplyDelete
  24. Coutinho is closer to Beardsley in style. I hope he gets close to that level...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Or post the John Barnes you tube compilation for people who don't remember him? mine was moderated out for some reason?

    ReplyDelete
  26. He let them kick Sterling from pillar to post. How did he miss that handball?

    ReplyDelete
  27. He was in the top 4 or 5 players in the world at that time. By JK's criteria, since he didn't inspire England to glory, he wasn't world class.
Which is why I disagree with his criteria.
Barnes was definitely world class during that period.
by JK's reckoning George Best wasn't world class either...

    ReplyDelete
  28. To be fair the pass from Can was pretty world class.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Good idea..
    Did Skrtel touch him?

    ReplyDelete
  30. if anybody seen Barnes play from 87-91 will know that answer

    ReplyDelete
  31. Our team didn't have the chance to play the best for Barnes to show his form in Europe because of the Ban on English clubs. As for his international career, he made a big impact in the 86 world cup quarter final vs Argentina, scored one of the great international goals of all time vs Brazil on their own ground. He didn't match his Liverpool form when playing for England but then again who did ? Hoddle, Waddle and Beardsley didn't shine. Gazza did but in reverse, his club form was erratic due to injury.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Seldom gave the ball away either even when playing in LFC sides that were not at their best

    ReplyDelete
  33. Trouble is we would have had to retire several shirts over the years but I agree Barnes was one of the special ones,

Looks like we are all feeling more optimistic about things at the moment though there is still room for improvements.

    ReplyDelete
  34. First and foremost Can's hair is amazing.

Secondly, Can, Sterling and Coutinho have a great amount of potential and they can be the spine of the team for many years to come.

Thirdly, Allen and Gerrard should never play together and Gerrard should not be playing as CM. Allen is just the player we need.

Fourthly, I wish I could have the privilege of seeing John Barnes play :(

    ReplyDelete
  35. a very tiny deflection

    ReplyDelete
  36. Did the Coutinho goal get a little deflection though?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Can, he be world class

    ReplyDelete
  38. The referees assistant gave two incorrect offsides and such decisions change close matches

    ReplyDelete
  39. The difference I saw between the clips was the very deliberate nature of the John Barnes finishes. He put the ball exactly where he wanted it to go, whilst
Coutinho was more of a hit to a general area. Barnes looked like he could do that 8 times out of 0 let's hope PC can get close to that sort of repeatability

    ReplyDelete
  40. Ys quite right. He is coming along nicely though and if he can add a consistent and more powerful accurate shot he'll have it all

    ReplyDelete
  41. And we did prevail if you didn't notice.

Look, I'm not saying the result should change because of a ref's game, but this was absolutely pitiful. Normally I don't mind the ref. Yeah they make bad decisions every once in awhile, but like you said, it's part of the game.

HOWEVER, It's one thing to be a built in challenge to the game, and another to be an impediment. Yesterday, the ref was just terrible. When the LOSING team says the ref gave incorrect calls to their side (Lennon said afterwards that it was not a PK), you know you're having a bad day.
