Goal-Machine: LFC plan new offer for £25m striker who's 'better than Bale'. Done Deal this week?

Earlier this month, Anfield legend Steve Nicol urged Liverpool to Lyon goalscorer Alexander Lacazette, and after weeks of transfer speculation, the Reds are reportedly on the verge of making a concrete offer for the coveted striker.

In June, Lacazette's Agent, David Venditelli claimed that Lacazette 'will leave for a team that players in the Champions League' or one that is 'very close to it', and according to Le10 Sport this week:

* Liverpool are now favourites ahead of PSG to sign £25m-rated Lacazette.

* The Reds are planning to make an official offer 'in the coming days'

Speaking to ESPN last week, Nicol insisted that Lacazette 'fits the mould that Liverpool are looking for', and strongly urged his old club to pursue the striker:

“Liverpool have an opportunity to sign this guy [Lacazette] and I think they should. He loves to go forward [and] score goals and he reminds me of [Luis] Suarez. I think this would be a superb signing".

Ex-Red Aly Cissokho also believes that Lacazette is a good option for Liverpool, and in a recent interview, he enthused:

"Clubs like Liverpool have a lot of competition [but] it's up to him to see if he's ready to take it on. We'll see what happens in the summer, but he easily has the quality to play in teams of that stature."

Some info about Lacazette:

* 23 years old.
* Can play on the wings, or up-front.
* Spent his entire career with Lyon.
* Three trophies with his club so far.

* 58 apps for various France youth teams.
* 2 apps for the senior national team.
* 2010: Winning for for France in the Under-19 European Championship final.

* STATS: This season: 23 goals/7 assists in 27 apps.
* Goal/assist every 79 mins.
* 2009-2014: Goal/assist every 119 minutes (League only)

Lacazette is achieving Suarez/Sturridge-style creative stats this season, and given his speed, mobility, and finishing ability, he'd clearly be a logical signing for Liverpool. What are the chances of that actually happening, though?

When asked on Tuesday about the possibility of Lacazette leaving in January, Bernard Lacombe - special advisor to Lyon President Jean Michel Aulas - told reporters:

"He [Lacazette] is a great player, and weill do everything to keep him until the summer. He must work on his left foot, and if he does, he can be better than [Karim] Benzema"

Last week, Aulas made the following bold claim:

"I think Alexandre is much better [than Gareth Bale], but Alexandre doesn't have a price, so it's pointless thinking of one"

If Liverpool surprise everyone and seal this deal, Sturridge will clearly be under intense pressure to maintain his fitness. Lacazette has the potential to scale similar heights, and if he does the business, Sturridge's regular absences will suddenly become less important, which means he becomes less important.

Unfortunately, Liverpool cannot rely on Sturridge, so it's absolutely vital that the club has at least one other striker who's capable of picking up the slack. If that means Sturridge falls slightly down the pecking order, then so be it. I'm one of his biggest fans, but the team has to come first.

It would take a lot of money, perhaps 30 million or more to get him. Will FSG spend that much?

  2. I know it's not the premier league but this guys stats are unbelievable.i doubt it's going to happen but we could do with another striker!

    ReplyDelete
  3. the rumour has been gaining a lot of momentum of late. sounds like a stretch but apparently if we miss out on him we are planning on forking out 40 mil for benzema in the summer.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Can we just pay £16m and give them first 'Dibs' Joe Allen.

  5. I would love to have this guy at LFC, but Borini needs shipping first (or put into foster care). Borini works hard, but has no end product. He's like Will from The Inbetweeners on top of Charlotte Hinchcliffe (he wriggles about a lot but nothing actually goes in).

  6. Suarez came from Ajax...

  7. I think this is the right move for the club. No, I haven't looked at all his detailed stats, watched all of his videos and analysed his movement and work-rate but those goal stats speak for themselves. He has all the makings of a top class player coming into his own at the right time of his career. He is technically fantastic and his finishing, albeit not against the best defences in the world, is top class. He seems to be able to play comfortably as part of a front 3, two main strikers or as a lone striker. He can score on the break or in traffic and he's even good with the set piece. He's not really a Suarez kind of player, he doesn't have the same creative dribbling skills and dogged determination, but then there is only one Luis Suarez and we should probably let go of the idea of replacing him.

I can see him playing quite well with Sturridge. They are, to some extent, quite similar players who both like to play through the middle but Sturridge is also very effective in a right sided attacking role and I'd guess Lacazette is fine doing the same. Neither player would need to go particularly wide in order to accommodate the other, for years it was quite normal to play with two centre forwards in a team and Liverpool don't crowd the box with attackers to the point where they start running out of room. Neither Lacazette nor Sturridge need to be "on the ball" all the time in order to be effective, not like Mario seems to be, they just find good space in attacking areas, take good passes and then finish well. This leaves plenty of opportunity for Coutinho, Sterling and Lallana to continue to be the main creators in the system.

Lyon appear to be unwilling to let him go although maybe that's just talk to bump up the price ... I don't know. Why would they sell in January? He's a contracted player and his price will only continue to inflate for the rest of the seasons. Plenty of teams will want him. They are top of the league so CL for next season looks good and Liverpool are no certainty. So there are a few things working against Liverpool at the moment. The Cassette will need to have some desire to come here, he'll have to ask for the move. Is that what he wants? Is he a Liverpool fan? Is he desperate to prove himself in England or is he happy playing for a top French side?

We've been knocked back by a few players and their owning clubs in recent times and I'm not sure this will be any different. I hope that's wrong, but I don't hold out much hope. Perhaps money talks and the right offer will get this done. It's certainly worth a try, we just shouldn't expect much.

  8. Class player, but we won't sign him, as we'll dither until Chelsea or another club nab him.

  9. The Transfer Committee is a joke, isn't it? He's soooo much better than Benzema? He's pacy, skillful, and can create chances for himself, something Benz can only dream of.

    ReplyDelete
  10. i've been moaning about it for years. every window ever we have a guy in our sights who is essential to the team, ticks every single box there is and is available for a reasonable fee and we almost always end up with someone else who is half as good for twice as much.

    ReplyDelete
  11. They tried to get both Costa and Sanchez for similar fees, so why not?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Another stated facts which will amount to nothing!!! Luckily the week is almost over so we are sure to know if he is or he is not!!! LFC has 4 strikers and none are getting sold this January.

    ReplyDelete
  13. This might be the most clearly concise analogy... of all time.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Lot of strikers now, include Origi will back next season we have 5. Buy another will be 6. And if we only play with 1 striker in 3-4-3, who will out?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Saw a couple of Youtube highlight reels from this year. Great eye for the goal, quick release, accurate, fast. Looks really good, but he's never going to get the space he gets in those reels. Do the French even understand the phrase 'close down the man?' He's so wide open it's pathetic. He'd learn quick though and he's quick enough to make his own space even though it would be less than he's presently accustomed to. Yes, he's definitely worth a bid.

  16. all we need is 4 world class players . Our team is in need of players like Pogba Lacazetta Reus and illarmendi for real who is not getting go was in front of Isco . Come on FSG

    ReplyDelete
  17. You make that sound like an easy thing... "All we need are 4 world class players???" Pogba is near impossible, Reus highly unlikely with money bags sniffing around, and Illara while good is not world class. All will be overpriced as well. They simply won't be worth the amount they'll go for, if they are sold (which is no guarantee in the first place).

All the while, Lacazette is a very good target, if a bit ambitious. Kramer instead of Pogba, we don't need Reus (we almost have too many good AMs as it is), and Song instead of Illara.

    ReplyDelete
  18. We 'll never go for anything with that price (I presume, it 'll take over 30m). FSG's transfer policy is like US sports - either they 'll spend for top quality draft pick or 'll go for big contracts with top free agents, or they 'll go for trade exchange. I am sure, they are not clear about the football transfer, where the biggest amount goes to the club.

We don't have any clue of what actual market price (it's market price, not justified price) of a player is. Most cases, either we have overpaid or we have missed the boat for a fraction more. JM is actually proving how fool we were doing tug of war for Costa with 20mn & then paid 25m for Lallana. Also, I think, BR has very little knowledge or pulling power outside UK.

I don't think we 'll go for Lecazzette, my fear is, we 'll make WBA 15-18mn richer for Berahino on the deadline day.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I did notice that time and space, it was a bit ridonkulous. Gives him lots of time to get his technique right. Meanwhile in England he'd have some 6'4 lunatic charging at him and kicking him on the shins. There will be some adjustment required.

  21. The LFC Transfer Committee6:25 am, January 22, 2015

    LFC fans,

Ian is right, and whilst it has been brought to our attention that while Alexander Lacazette is a great player, we think it would be foolish tosend a scout all the way to France to watch him when there are so many English players that have scored a goal recently.

You will be pleased to hear that we have identified Andy Carroll, Saido Berahino or Charlie Austin as the player to get us back into the Champions League.

We have the spending power, and expect bids of above £30m in the summer.

    Thanks,
    The Committee

    ReplyDelete
  22. I would be very suprised indeed if we event went for him in this window, let alone signed him. BR has indicated there will be little activity and i can't see why Lyon would even entertain selling their best player now when they are in the midst of a title challenge. Barring injury, his value is hardly likely to decrease between now and the end of the season, and with the kind of stats he is producing, it is more likely to increase if anything i would say. Basically, yet another transfer rumour not worth the paper its written on in my opinion. Yes, i can see us being interested in him in the Summer, but for this to be wrapped in a week is just not going to happen. Thats without mentioning the inivetiable player sales that would need to occur as we already have too many strikers not playing ti accommodate another one.

    ReplyDelete
  23. We have Can for Pogba too..

    ReplyDelete
  24. Swnd them Balotelli. And 25 mill. They can't refuse that?

    ReplyDelete
  25. We cant rely on DS to be fit all season. The club should show ambition and sign AL. We paid more for Lalana. Who has yet to prove his worth.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Mat Ryan keeper, Song, Lacazette. Good to go. Enough selection headaches for mr rogers

    ReplyDelete
  34. fsg will out with any luck

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well they couldnt sign him to a professional contract but got around that by making his father (agent) a coach bet he is is the highest paid coach in the B league.
The kid is going to get a lot of splinters in his backside thats if he ever gets that far.
A horrible decision and i cannot help but feel dad was keen to line his own pockets.

    ReplyDelete
  48. we should also sign your mother

    ReplyDelete
  49. no your mother made a mistake giving birth to you

    ReplyDelete
  50. Dont forget FSG saved the club from administration. They have put money in for transfers every year and are actually following though with the plans to expand Anfield something that should have been done years ago, they also reduced the debt which was crippling the club.

FFP and extra revenues that alot of the clubs competing with Liverpool have due to the match day revenues and CL money means that the owners hands are tied in many ways. Addressing the match day revenue with the expansion is exactly the correct way to go.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I think Lyon will accept 25m for Lacazette, and we need a ST like him, we'll have three great Strikers "Sturridge, Lacazette and Balotelli" and get rid of Borini for 12m and Lambert 3m that's 15m and just add another 10m and get Lacazette...

Our Starting XI will Look Like this

    .........................Mignolet........................
    ....Can................Skrtel.............Sakho....
    Sterling....Lucas....Henderson....Moreno
    ........................Coutinho........................
    .............Sturridge.......Lacazette.............

Subs: Gerrard, Balotelli, Lallana, Lovren, Markovic, Manquillo, Toure, Jones, Flanagan

But I'll Start Toure or Lovren instead of Can at CB when they r Back, and Can to play at CM...

    ReplyDelete
  52. they where one of a few who had the revenues to save the club from admin. Reduced debt still nearly 50 mil in the red. CL money is a thing of the past already. You must be one of the fsg lovers...if you love these yanks so much why don't you move to the united s.ithole of jewmerica

    Should be sign him soon

    ReplyDelete
  57. If we offer around 25 million they'll start listening. Lacazette in January would be a great addition with either Lambert or Borini sold (or both). If we could sell both (unlikely though) we've got Sterling to cover and maybe Jerome Sinclair can be given a chance to step up.

In the summer we've got Origi coming in. Add a goalkeeper like Perin (would like Cech but think he'll go Arsenal) and a top midfielder like Pogba or Barkley. With the squad we have we only need 1 or 2 players each window so why can't we splash out a bit more on top players

    ReplyDelete
  58. haha...fifa and football manager I think not...whats wrong redwill someone hit a nerve...you need to take your c.ck out of your mothers pu.sy

    ReplyDelete
  59. Selling Lambert makes no sense to me- he cost us 4 mill, we sell for 2, why? I rather have him on the bench and in cups- those moments like Sunderland are priceless. Plus we would get much more for Borini. GK yeah, though I again have bit of faith in Migs.. But why Barkly and Pogba? That is 40 and 80 mil respectevly, and we have Can, Couts, Leiva, Lazar, Hendo Lallana, Sterling and Ibe. Next season all 8 of them should be starters or close to being starters?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Bullshit. He's a good player just not suited to the way we play.and there has been a lot of money spent over the summer, rubbish to say otherwise..

    ReplyDelete
  61. He'll cost way more than 25m, Lyon don't need to sell and are fighting for CL with a good chance of getting it.
What would you expect the fee for Reus to be? Lacazette is on a par with him. Suarez-esq goal/assist stats cost Barca best part of 70m, it's not inconceivable that Lacazette would be in the 40m+ bracket.

I'd love to see him at LFC, but I don't think we could afford him or his wages. Hopefully I'm wrong

    ReplyDelete
  62. Me too Liverpool would have been a better option than Real but there you go money talks.

    ReplyDelete

why would player like Lacazette,Rackitic,Kroos ,etc
want to play for us when you can go and earn more money ,compete at a higher level (win trophies),live a better life style elsewhere by joining clubs like Real,Barca,Man utd,Chelsea,Arsenal,PSG ,bayern?

Plus please tell me you don't believe in Jaimies price tags plucked from sky, Lacazette will cost a lot more then 25m

    ReplyDelete
  84. Sorry man he will not join
please do not get your hopes up they will only be shattered
if clubs like ,Munich,PSG,Man utd,Man city,Arsenal,Chelsea get involved we cant do anything but move on

  85. Our selling point must be that we need him much more than the other teams do, he can also be part of a bright future.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Absolutely, I don't understand the constant moaning about FSG. They have provided the funds in every transfer windows and have started work on redeveloping anfield, what's the problem? It's not FSG's fault we have overpaid for certain players and bought other players that aren't good enough.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Seriously moronic

    ReplyDelete
  88. agreed and chelski will probably nip in just as we are about to sign him to stop us getting him, like they did with other players like salah, i think he only played two games for them and now it looks like he'll be sold.

    ReplyDelete
  89. The Skrtel elbow was Costa trying to get Skrtel carded or sent off. I've watched it a couple of times and Costa doesn't look at the ball once. He looks at Skrtel and runs in to him. Him and Hazard are horrible players. Mourinho players.

I don't have a problem with operating within a budget, and I bet teams like Leeds wished they had been a bit more frugal.
We were minutes away from extinction a few years ago and almost won the League last year, so I don't think FSG have done too bad.

  98. Right at the start Skirtel blasts the ball into the crowd and Costa laughs at Skirtel and says something- it goes back to Euro qualifier when Skirtel wiped the floor with him and Slovakia beat them- he hasn't forgotten

    ReplyDelete
  99. It looks to me as though Costa just wanted to jump into Skrtel and got more than he bargained for. He has a sneaky look at Skrtel before jumping towards him

    ReplyDelete
  100. I'm sure this post is racist. Jaimie (or another mod)? You out there?

    ReplyDelete
  101. i hear its 80 thousand pounds per week for 16 year old odegaard.. nothing more to say really.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Luis Suarez is school boy from catholic church school compared to him. So many times he spit, stamped, hit, cheated that is unacceptable... Really glad he is our player, as odd as it sounds...

    ReplyDelete
  103. Sakho also ripped him apart in a friendly, think we have a cure for him. But we need Can in the midfield and defenders in the defence for the second leg. Against easier opponents Can can be in the back three, good managers will leave him with good attackers, and he will do the trick once or twice... My line up would be
    Moreno Sakho Skrtel Flanno(or Manquillo)
    ---------------Can Lukas
    Couts----------------------Lallana
    ------------Gerrard
    ...............................Sterling

    ReplyDelete
  104. Sorry about that fool. He's now banned.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Yeah, sorry for the delay getting to him.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Is Flanno fit? Big game to come back in. Ski did their utmost to get at Can and if we play same team will do it again- But it works both ways and this time he will know what's coming.BR always tinkering but this time maybe he won't

    ReplyDelete
  107. Brilliant post. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  108. BR says we're gonna challenge for the PL title - next season

    ReplyDelete
  109. I don't see it. He may need to pull his head out of the clouds. We will be fighting for top 4, and it will be difficult without Gerrard's leadership.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Nice post Adam.

    ReplyDelete
  111. 4 quality players needed before it could happen - starting with a keeper

    ReplyDelete
  112. It's not a crazy notion. But really it depends on what the other clubs do doesn't it. I can see City breaking up their team and going into transition. Their success has been built on Kompany, Toure, Aguero, and Silva, and I think those players are not the force they were. I'd be mildly surprised if they were all still there next year, and there aren't obvious replacements coming through. A team built around Mangala, Fernandinho, and Jovetic, is not quite so intimidating. So there might be room at the top. But to be honest I think we are at the beginning of a few years of Chelsea dominance.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Could be 7 teams fighting for top 4 - the other 6 will strengthen for sure and we need to as well

    ReplyDelete
  114. Only the committee cant see that Lacazette is better than Benzema.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Wow... that is just unbelievable. Good for the kid; he'll be set for life before he hits his 21st birthday.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I think we just need two signings: a keeper to challenge Mignolet, and a proven goalscorer - would be happy with Lacazette.
Three signings if Lucas leaves. I think Can can fill in in Lucas's absence but we will need cover if the German gets injured.

    ReplyDelete
  117. You say Rodgers should pull his head out of the clouds then you say it will only take two signings. All this doesn't really make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Actually said three signings. We completely changed the team over the summer. Why do it again? How many players would you bring in?

    ReplyDelete
  119. That's what I don't understand about some of these players.

I mean, the simple answer is that the money must be greater.

Is it hubris that a player thinks he's going to one of these clubs to start consistently over someone who's already there?

I look at Salah as a prime example. He chose to go to Chelsea. Did he really expect to start over their existing options?

Who would Lacazette start over at any of these big financial clubs unless someone there gets hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  120. In my opinion, Lucas should be the replacement for Stevie G.

We are finally seeing Lucas start get back to his pre-injury form. I emphasize start because I don't think he'll ever get back there. When he tore his ACL, he was arguably a top 20 holding midfielder in the world. (And I emphasize arguably)

  121. I don't think many people thought we would challenge for the league last season either. I find it quite funny that Rodgers gets slammed for his supposed lack of ambition and then when he sais he want's to win the league people mock him. Jaimie even criticised him for saying he thought we could win at Chelsea next week. If he doesn't think we can win, why even go and play the match and waste everybody's time?
Anyway, to answer your question I don't think we need to sign many players next summer. One of the reasons we bought so many players last summer was to build something strong for the long term without having to make wholesale changes every transfer window. And most of the signngs are now starting to show what they are capable of.

  122. A manager can be confident of winning without boasting about it. Ambition doesn't always have to be vocalised, and it doesn't changed based on whether it's voiced in public or private. Why say that LFC can beat Chelsea? It's all hot air. Actions speak louder than words; remain humble, and go there and prove it.

  124. Yea agreed - I would add Garay in defence as well cos Lovren doesn't look like he can make it here

  125. The sentence was something like "winning at Chelsae will be tough, but if we play the same way we did tonight I believe we can make it"
I just can't see how any Liverpool supporter can find something wrong in our manager saying that. For me it shows a sort of inferiority complex towards Chelsea when you have a problem with that, which is maybe understandable regarding our bad recent record against them, but still...

  126. I think you're both right - sort of. You want a manager that has confidence in his side and whilst BR is sometimes OTT just lately he has been a lot better. IMO

That said there are a couple or three additions needed to really compete in the top 4 and if you;re doing that you are also in with a shout for the title

  127. This makes sense to me.

  128. Yeah Aguero and Kompany have suffered quite a bit with injuries. I think at a Sturridge level. Kompany hasn't looked anything like the player we expect him to be either. Toure isn't getting any yoinger and the rumour mil suggests he may wantbthe last big payday move. PSG or a club like that.Chelsea and United will definitely add bodies though.United didn't even need to be doing that well to be the second richest club in football.

  129. It's a tricky one going to a "Big club" brings the potential of honours & a slim chance that if you do well to breakthrough to first 11. This will raise your stock astronomically. How do you say no to a big club is the question. Isles your absolutely right, it requires a degree of honesty & integrity. Scott Sinclairtown & to a lesser degree Salah have done their career no favours. The key is what stage of your career are you at? Ricky Lambert at his stage would have been barking mad to say no to LFC & you can't begrudge him the move even though at times he appears out of depth. A young kid like Lacazette or Sinclair (before he left Swansea) should understand that in the long term you're better off building your profile at a club where you have a decent chance of playing & even better if the club is ambitious ie looking to get back to regular champions league. This is why lfc would be perfect for Lacazette, if not for 3 years, by then he'd be 26, entering prime years. Then he could reassess & look for a big move if we haven't fulfilled his ambition. That's if he's good enough, which is a big IF! Whilst I understand that career threatening injuries happen the way the game is played nowadays makes this less likely. If you look back at 60s-80s football your eyes will water.
