In recent months, ex-Reds David Thompson and Mark Lawrenson have suggested that Liverpool should consider signing 'Brilliant' former Spurs striker Jermain Defoe, and according to new reports this week, LFC have the opportunity to bring Defoe to Anfield in January.
According to The Telegraph this week:
* Toronto FC have 'offered' Defoe to Liverpool.
* TFC are looking for a £6m [€8m] permanent deal for the ex-England striker.
* Defoe prefers a loan until the end of the season.
In October, Thompson tweeted:
"I would love to see Defoe come to Anfield in the [transfer] window He still has plenty of legs, and would really add to the squad"
Speaking to the BBC in mid-December, Lawro also hinted that Defoe is a good potential signing for Liverpool. He explained:
"Defoe should never have left the Premier League. He'll always get goals. I can imagine a number of clubs being interested in him. I wonder if Liverpool are among them - stranger things have happened."
In a recent interview, Toronto General manager Tim Bezbatchenko confirmed that the club had received an offer for the striker, and conceded that the club will sell for the right price. He told reporters:
“Jermain has not asked to leave, but if you’re not 100 per cent committed in what we’re doing, then we have to sit down and talk. We'll expect 'a lot of money. More than we paid for him"
Thanks, but no thanks.
Defoe is just another Joe Cole - a journeyman Londoner with no real interest in Liverpool FC, who'll go to any Premier League club willing to pay his inflated wages. Like Cole, Defoe is not a 'Liverpool-type' player, and if he had any real affinity for LFC, he'd be interested in a permanent move to the club.
The biggest reason to steer clear of Defoe is his injury history. Since moving to the MLS, he has been plagued with issues, and he readily acknowledged this recently, when he told the BBC:
"I've been playing 15 months without a rest so I think that's probably the key factor in me getting injuries. I need to shut down and rest my legs. And then we'll take it from there. We'll see what happens when I go home."
Injuries aside, is Defoe a better option than Lambert, Balotelli and/or Borini? Based on current form, he probably couldn't do any worse, but there's simply no point signing an injury-prone stopgap.
Arsenal tried that last year with Kim Kallstrom, and look what happened.
Ultimately, if the answer to Liverpool's issues up-front is to bring in another 32-year old striker in the twilight of his career, then someone at Anfield is asking the wrong question.

NO!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSick of being linked to average past the expiry date players.
ReplyDelete8m for Lavezzi sounds miles better.
ReplyDeleteWorst rumour ever this wont happen Defoe cant score in MLS.
ReplyDeleteWe already have 3 strikers, Lambert, Balotelli and Borini who have been designated to bench duty or not even making the match day squad.
ReplyDeleteThis is why I believe FSG will not be making more money available.
We need at least two signings if we are to do anything this season. A GK and a striker are a must.
ReplyDeleteWhy I do not want Defoe
ReplyDeletePresenter - I have two marbles. How many marbles do I have?
Defoe - Pass
Presenter - The apple is red. What colour is the apple?
Defoe - Pass
Presenter - I live in England. Where do I live?
Defoe - Pass
Presenter - If you are faced with an opportunity at an acute angle with 3 players open in the box what will you do?
Defoe - Shoot!!
Benteke please. Beast of a player!
ReplyDeleteWho are we going to sign now without either overpaying for in form players at clubs below us in the league and being mid table?
ReplyDeleteWe are between a rock and a hard place at the moment. If we had been challenging for the league again then maybe things would be a bit different. We will struggle to finish top 4 this season when looking at our match vs Leicester.
No point in wasting anymore of FSG's money now. What could happen is signing a GK who's contract is expiring on precontract for next season. We are being heavily linked with Neto at the moment.
No no no
ReplyDeleteLove to see us sign Barkley from the dirty toffee noses
ReplyDeleteI highly doubt there is a real lot of money there i think come the summer if we want quality then there will be a fair few sold.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not £25m for Berahino. Agree, players will have to be moved on in order to bring in new faces.
ReplyDeleteJohnson, Toure and Gerrard off our wage bill will give us some room to maneuver too coupled with other players who get sold in the summer.
Jermain Defoe brilliant striker for 8 mil? Last time I checked "brilliant" strikers cost 40-50 mil on the cheap...
ReplyDeleteHell No! If he arrives, it will reveal the true ambition of LFC. Having Lambert as the first player through the door last summer was bad enough.
ReplyDeletefsg/rodgers or what ever idiot is running the transfer dept at anfield stop wasting money on crap ......
ReplyDeletehis injuries are a problem
ReplyDeleteWhat the point ? We had to spend 8m for Defoe and having another player warm the bench now and next season and let him leave on cheap?? Why dont we pay 8m (mayb more) to bring back Origi
ReplyDeleteReckon we are stuck with what we've got- best we can hope for is a keeper preferably Horn or Leno
ReplyDeleteIf LFC want to waste 8m give it to me I can waste it too. If they choose to spend money buy a keeper
ReplyDeleteget him now he would work well with sturridge, sterling and henderson as they have played in the u21 england team together
ReplyDeleteThink that's why Spurs are interested so they'd have him and Harry Kane but 25m is a lot imo
ReplyDeleteNo way.
ReplyDeleteBerahino...£25 million? no way, hes scored three goals from open play and three penalties in the leage this season. He's just not the quality we need, but then again Rodgers has'nt bought the quality we need since he's been with the club.
ReplyDeleteRight up Rodgers' street, another pile of crap for the fans to watch.
ReplyDeleteI fear there will be no extra money from FSG this month ... Rodgers will have to sell to be able to buy - no doubt he has a list made up already . Keeper is a MUST but depending on the situation with Studge , serious consideration should be given to getting Jordan Ibe back . IMO he should return anyway and benefit from Stevie G's experience whilst with us ............
ReplyDeletePutting sentiment aside the main thing now is to stay focussed .
Wimbledon next is going to be difficult and we have to go into that match with clear heads and with positivity - can't afford distractions . Let's just hope the dust has settled by then . This is going to be an important spell for us and silverware is still up for grabs . Rodgers cannot afford to let sentimentality cloud his judgement . This will either go two ways for us .... either it will fire the team up to ' do it ' for Stevie to go out with a bang or allow distraction and take our eye off the ball ........
Let's hope it is the former !
We can talk all day long about how much we think he's worth and all pretend that we're such experts at market worth (like some of the comments here) that we can decide for West Brom what they should accept, but the fact of the matter is - West Brom will set his price and we'll either have to live with, or more likely, try to negotiate and mess it up with an offer no where near what West Brom want
ReplyDeleteThis guy gets a chance and he scores, he's a natural finisher, he will get a lot more chances at Liverpool than WBA £25 mill in todays climate is a steal I personally don't want him to go but I'm realistic, he probably will. He will Play for England and how much do you have to pay for a young England Striker these days?
ReplyDeleteNo thanks to Defoe, Does anyone have an opinion on Predrag Rajkovic GK of Redbull belgrade? a friend said he was a quality keeper and looking at his stats at 19yr old this season 15 app 10 clean sheet 6 goals conceded.
ReplyDeleteNot bad for a buy and loan out prospect, or even a buy n take the no.1 spot the way we are going
Also noticed fiorentinas goalie is refusing to resign a contract and will be leaving, any chance we can squeeze some money out of them (not likely) for a borini/Neto swap.
ReplyDeleteGoalkeeper stats are always delusive. Clean sheets and goals conceded are a lot about the entire defence of the team, not just the goalkeeper. Safes per goal stats would be much more interesting
ReplyDeleteI completely agree, im just throwing stuff out there seeing if i get a bite.
ReplyDeleteI actually wouldnt mind Perin irrespective of his stats, i think he's be a good buy aslong as its not for the crazy money his agent is throwing out there. but then again i wanted mignolet :S ................ so yea
That's because we can't seem to get into the final third this season we have been awful if you look at the stats in most games we have struggled to get shots in at all. So wouldn't read to much into that, when Berahino gets a chance he normally scores.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, mignolet was very good last season (at least in the first half). He safed us a lot of points - so did toure... But fans these days seem to forget everything past the last 3 games.
ReplyDeleteI've always been a fan of begovic, so he will always be my first choice ;-) perin is to young if you ask me, he won't be able to stand the pressure Liverpool fans put on him
gogogogogo BR, maybe see what they will give us for Borini, Neto+Cash.
ReplyDeleteDoubtful though being fiorentina
Paying 8m for a player who we already own and hasn't scored for almost 1000 minutes is utter madness
ReplyDeleteim thinking more of a buy and loan situation like what chelsea did.
ReplyDeleteMignolet is a very good shot stopper, but as a leader at the back he might be lacking.
but in saying that, our defense is a siv and i dunno maybe keepers that would be able to look world class behind it.
For 5m i'd take Defoe... We need to ship out balotelli
ReplyDeleteIbe's contract expires end of the season. If we do not renew it he is gone.
ReplyDeleteThe wages are a big reason, but you have to look at the bigger picture. Man Utd were never likely to be without UCL footie long term. Take off the rose tinted specs and look at the facts. They have the revenue, owners not afraid to spend it and a top manager with a reputation for winning. Now look at us. We don't generate the same level of revenue, we don't have owners who are prepared to break budgets... and the manager???
ReplyDeletePlayers aren't fans. They're doing a job and they'll want to work where the rewards are greatest.
and we are a club run buy mugs
ReplyDeleteGuess Origi's comin! 3 million...?
ReplyDeleteLFC, the club that buys Minis at Ferrari prices!
ReplyDeleteThe legend? Lawrenson is a numpty as a pundit and as a journalist, although to be honest most journos are numpties. When I listen to Neville and Carra give a tactical break down of a game ( Monday night football ), it gives the impression Lawrenson made a career knitting cardigans.
ReplyDeleteyou seriously need to your head checked!!!!
ReplyDeleteplease you just want the 25 mill do us a favour and do 1!
ReplyDeletenot a penny over 10 mill
ReplyDeleteJames Pearce reporting that LFC will cut Origi's loan short and bring him to Anfield this month.
ReplyDeleteWhat that really means is BR is correct when he says there will be no more spending in January. Poor Origi. He will be expected to start producing at Sturridge/Suarez levels immediately.
ReplyDeleteApparently Origi is being treated really badly by Lille fans. Also 13th in Ligue 1 so things are not going too well there. Maybe it is a good idea to get Origi out of there but he will be cup tied for the Europa league and we are also struggling as a team.
ReplyDeleteIf this move even gets to the discussion point with the LFC transfer commitee, I will have my answer, Liverpool do indeed lack any ambition.
ReplyDeleteNo Thanks!
Borini, Lambert, Balotelli and Defoe are not good enough to play for LFC.
ReplyDeleteBalotelli deserves a chance besides our main striker, but the rest can leave or shouldn't be considered at all. Bring in Shaqiri and end the loan periods of Ibe and Origi.
i can see somebody talking sense!
ReplyDeleteSo, we have actually sinked down to depending on a 19 year old to save our season.
ReplyDeletelol so true!
ReplyDeleteLike we wont sign him up. It expires at the end of next season, but I could be wrong. Because if his contract ends this summer, other clubs are already allowed to sign him up before the summer.
ReplyDeletewhat you lost your marbles?
ReplyDeleteIt will pretty much confirm that FSG do not want to give Rodgers anymore money which could spell the end to him too.
ReplyDeleteUnless Origi miraculously transforms into Henry, any slim hope of saving the season is gone.
ReplyDeleteTransfermarkt state his contract ends in May this year. They could be right, could be wrong.
ReplyDeleteNo bloody chance.
ReplyDeleteI really think you Cassandras are going to get a lesson this season in not calling a result at half-way.
ReplyDeleteYeah like Sturridge, Coutinho, Lallana, Moreno. Load of crap right.
ReplyDeleteJermain Defoe, right? Defoe was one of the best finishers in the league in his day.
ReplyDeleteIMO the season was gone a while ago. Our form this whole season has not been good enough for a top four finish. Averaging 1.45 points per game tells you everything you need to know. If Southampton continue at the rate they are currently going at they will finish on about 70 points.
ReplyDeleteIf we want to finish on 70 points we will need to achieve 2.28 points per game from now on.
Our average over the whole of last season was 2.21 points per game. You can see where this is going...
Bony would be a poor choice for us, tho he's good at what he does. We need more mobility. That Gomis at Swansea, actually, would suit us better. Thought he was top class against us, too.
ReplyDeleteWhat errant nonsense.
ReplyDeleteNah, but I will refrain from 'told you so' by the end of the season ;-)
ReplyDeleteYou know what I dont understand? We supposedly sign all these unproven players for their sell on value but how much exactly do FSG expect they will be selling Lallana, Balotelli, Lovren and Markovic for? And isnt that the same as saying that were a farm team for other clubs?
ReplyDeleteLots of contracts have options of one year which club could take
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely spot on! Rodgers needs to get his January signings right and can not afford any risk signings of players with potential
ReplyDeletetheres a boat load we should sell
ReplyDeleteJust seen a side who spent 60m euros on 11 players. They have just beat the world/europe champions and are sitting 4th in la liga. LFC have a look!
ReplyDeleteShaqiri rejected us for Inter Milan
ReplyDeleteSource?
ReplyDeleteMetro wich sites sources in Italy
ReplyDeleteSo, someone struggling (for value for money) at Toronto (no offence, I live here) is a good fit for LFC for around 70K/week. Gradually, these Yanks are goofing up everything. Oil price index suggests that we 'll not get a new owner either in near future...... only option is a new Manager......
ReplyDeleteIf the Italian media was right, we would have signed Shaqiri ten times by now.
ReplyDeleteBe grateful for our owners
ReplyDeleteimagine if Mike Ashley was in charge
Man city won't be interested in him , Man U ,chelsea and arsenal also won't be but we are. If we do get him either Rodgers is an absolute genius and chelsea, Man U, man city etc managers don't know what there doing or it will turn out weve yet again wasted big money on an average player. I've turned out to be right on most the signings ive commented about and I'm affraid I don't believe Berahino will turn out to be all that great ( not for a top top 5 team anyway . How many players have we bought in for good money from teams further down our league that have turned out to be good enough to make a big difference to a top 4 team ?. Henderson is about the best one in recent years but even he wouldn't walk straight into the top four teams . Mark my words it will end up being more big money wasted on over priced young british talent
ReplyDeleteYou guys are crazy if you dont think he is worth that. He's one of the top scorers so far in the prem, he is only 21, his play has improved tenfold each of the last 3 years. The sky is literally the limit for him. Watch his goals in west broms last cup game where he has 4. Yes it was against a poor team but his finishing is sublime. Give him 3-5 years and he will be worth 50m I guarantee it.
ReplyDeleteThis is why we are in the position we are Greg, over last 6 years we sell our top players and never replace the class or quality they brought club.
ReplyDelete6 Years on we still have not replaced the class and quality of Alonso(32) and Mascherano(30) in centre midfield.
Suarez(27) replaced Torres(30) class and quality and was better in the end than Torres(30)
Now S Gerrard(34) is leaving we need to bring in some top class quality players as J Allen(24). J Henderson(24), E Can(20) are not world beaters. They are three average centre midfielders who all do the same or similar thing
K Toure(33) should be replaced by A Romagnoli(19) Of Roma
They will probably see it out with Rodgers til the end of the season.
ReplyDeleteYeah. I vaguely remember watching this Lyon team - Gomis, Lisandro Lopez, Kim Kallstrom, Michel Bastos & a young Miralem Pjanic. And yeah, they were joy to watch.
ReplyDeleteReally? Tell me more about it.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it a shame that LFC are paying £3M (reportedly) to advance the arrival of a certain another over hyped signing - Origi. It's just another bad signing. Least £15M wasted. And I say this without him even kicking the ball for LFC. It's a pity that what we've come to.
ReplyDeleteApparently Chelsea need to sign Icardi and then Lucas will be off to Inter.
ReplyDeleteDefoe= no
ReplyDeleteLavezzi for under £10M on the other hand....
I don't really understand the question. Do you want me to tell you more about how I never really rated Defoe?
ReplyDeleteHe basically was a decent goal scorer. He'd get 15 or so goals a season but they'd come in bunches. He'd score 6 in 5 games and then not score for 6 games.
People used to say he was an excellent finisher, but I dispute this. I recall him being a fairly poor decision maker in front of goal. He'd often go alone when he should pass and could equally do the opposite. He was a fairly emphatic finisher, which people mistook for competency, I felt. He'd sometimes really twat it in to the roof of the net and it looked like he was in control as a result.
His all-round play wasn't great either, which meant you couldn't really play him up front by himself. His best periods were when he was partnered by Crouch and Keane at Portsmouth and Spurs respectively. He lacked the intelligence or savvy to be the focal point for a team's attack.
We need defenders... Howedes or Vertonghen anybody??
ReplyDeleteSturridge was a steal at £12m. The guy has almost a goal every 2 games playing for a smaller team in the premier league and he's young. I don't think it would be bad business at all...plus he's got a knack of scoring against United which is also a plus lol
ReplyDeleteHe has a release clause at around that figure, but it is massively unlikely he'll leave Dortmund in the lurch, considering their current position.
ReplyDeleteCome the summer, Real are expected to be in for him. We'd be, at best, behind Real. Bayern, City and United.
You can if you like, I won't mind! It's only football :)
ReplyDeletePlease dear God, not another mediocre name! We a prolific striker with fast get, tireless work ethic, a god passer and a clinical goal scoring
ReplyDeleteassassin. Defoe isn't even in that time zone!
Then we end a big boy goalie and a DM with ten years ahead of him who can snuff out opposition advances to help our defense and goaltending which look bad because of our Swiss cheese midfield defense except for Can......who is a bit of a stretch at CB.......
A post with some real sense. Bravo to you for putting it out there man, about time people started looking at the big picture.
ReplyDeleteNo I Don't I want us to keep him so you DO ONE! Just my opinion m8
ReplyDeleteAgreed
ReplyDeleteI don't understand all the doom and gloom. We are not far off the pace and playing increasingly well. The team is getting sorted out and we have players to add and return. We'll be a better team at the end of January than we were at the end of November.
ReplyDeleteI think about Arsenal in 2011-12 and 2012-13 coming from 7th and 6th to finished 3rd and 4th respectively, or Liverpool in 2007-8 coming from 8th to 4th. It's not even unusual for a team to recover from a poor first half of the season to qualify for the CL. The talent in our side is remarkable, we have an excellent coach and good signings improving the side. I also think Gerrard's retirement may catalyse some renewed focus in the squad.
I've been watching football a long time and I've learned never to decide that things are settled at half-time.
Should have done that the last window i went on about it then no C.L means its gunna be tough getting real quality i disagree that our mids are average but we should sell Allen.
ReplyDeleteWhat i am saying is i doubt there will be more than 45 mill in the summer thats if we dont spend now .
B Rodgers should bring in these two strikers for the cost of £20M in January:
ReplyDeleteL Vietto(21) Of Villareal for £10-£12M
L Adriano(27) Of Shakhtar Donesk for £5-£8M
These two mobile pacey strikers should be brought in, while F Borini(23) and R Lambert(32) should be shown the door as Balotelli(24) will come good once he is surrounded by class quality attacking players with mobility, pace and speed.
Anyone who pays 25mill for him needs his head read, just another over priced British footballer, Luciano Vietto is what half that price tag and in my book has more ability than this clown. BR really needs to get serious because this is fast becoming a JOKE.
ReplyDeleteI don't actually want Lavezzi. I don't think he'll add enough, better than Borini doesn't automatically mean good enough.
ReplyDeleteB Rodgers should spend £75m on 6 top class quality players now:
ReplyDeleteNo potential, No Over the hill has beens either.
GK: A Begovic(27) Of Stoke for £10-£14M
DM: M Schneiderlin(25) Of Southampton for 16-£21M
CM: M Sissoko(25) Of Newcastle for £12-£14M
RWF/LWF: X Shaqiri(23) Of Bayern Munich for £12-£15M
FD: L Adriano(27) Of Shakhtar Donesk for £5-£7M
FD: L Vietto(21) Of Villareal for £10-£13m
Whilst shipping out These 7 DEAD WOOD AVERAGE players to bring in £20-£30M in on SALES:
GK: B Jones(32)
RB: G Johnson(30)
CM: J Allen(24)
DM: L Leiva(27)
AM: Suso(20)
FD: F Borini(23)
FD: R Lambert(32)
Oh god, Pjanic. What a player.
ReplyDeleteJ Allen(24) is an average midfielder, J Henderson(24) is an average midfielder and so is E Can(20) they do the basics very well. But lack class and quality in the attacking final third and goals. And how many goals has our midfield got all season between them considering the games they have played? We have average midfield
ReplyDeleteNo, that's not what I said :-)
ReplyDeleteYou said that Rodgers would get sacked after the Leicester game; I disagreed he'd get sacked *on that day*
i'd be happy with Begovic, a good DM/CM and Adriano
ReplyDeleteHendersons good great work rate will only get better same as Can will only get better he is only 20 mate.
ReplyDeleteGreg, You don't get it. At end of day, J Henderson(24) and E Can(20) are young players.
ReplyDeleteBut they both are average and offer the same thing to side, whilst both lack class, creativity in the final third and goals to their games.
i love Liverpool and Gerrard but brandon is a shame to this club!
ReplyDeleteits a petty they let him drug the club and Gerrard to that!
henderson ? are you serious ? very very average player at best!
who else out there ?
Gerrard is still number 1 picking on quality and skill and not because of his name
thats without mention his added value to the club in a different aspects around the club (example, energy , responsibility , leader etc)
brandon don't want him there and thats the story !
"transition periode" while moving all the anchors of the team - agger, caragheur , Suarez and the biggest mistake is Gerrard .
brandon, full of ego and thinking he knows whats he is doing (full of mistakes) exactly like graham souness when he took Liverpool at a young age and destroyed the club!
Mate it's pretty much not worth replying to each other. I didn't bother reading past two lines. We very much disagree and that will likely not change much with more posts.
ReplyDelete
