VIDEO: Shelvey cynically smashes Can in the face with his elbow. Red card offence?

Liverpool deservedly lead Swansea 1-0 at half-time in tonight's Premier League encounter at Anfield, but Swansea star Jonjo Shelvey is lucky to still be on the field after his blatant assault on Emre Can.

As the video below clearly shows, Shelvey lashed out at Can after being muscled off the ball.

Referee Andre Marriner missed the incident, but Shelvey may face retrospective action after the game if the FA decides to review the damning video evidence:

In my view, this is a deliberate act, and Shelvey should've been sent off.

  1. That is definitely a red card. Mariner surely mustn't have seen it. But what about the linesmen?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Red card yes, but it is gone now. Lets just go again,

    ReplyDelete
  3. What was Mariner looking at? Blatant red card - at least it allowed Carragher to clarify why we sold him...

    ReplyDelete
  4. Wow, could have been 3 2 in 3 minutes

    ReplyDelete
  5. But jesus does this team have defensive issues or what. Watching that goal was almost funny.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Another comedy of errors in defence. Can missed the header, and then a fine assist from Sakho ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  7. Those two are to blame for Swansea's goal.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Sterling. Hold the ball up.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I just hope we don't throw this away, swansea are really pushing

    ReplyDelete
  10. Anything less than 3 points would be disappointing

    ReplyDelete
  11. Game should be out of sight but yet again we let opposition off

    ReplyDelete
  12. STERLING YOU FRUSTRATE ME SOMETIMES. CHANCE GONE ABSOLUTELY BEGGING.

    ReplyDelete
  13. This is where I say, "how is this Rodgers' fault".

And then I say to myself... "this happens so often that it has to be his fault somehow". These types of mistakes don't happen with defensively-sound teams.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Sterling should have shot first time

    ReplyDelete
  15. Wicked wicked goal!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Coutinho the Brazilian Paul Daniels!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Such improvement compared to last season.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think the words "end product" come to mind

    ReplyDelete
  19. Lallana's tearing it up. That's what £25 million buys ya.

    ReplyDelete
  20. After such performances, hopefully BR will not med with that Henderson Lucas partnership. Gerrard should be coming in as a sub fit either.

    ReplyDelete
  21. What a player Coutinho is becoming ! He seems to have matured so much :-)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ask I ask of him is assists, not goals, like fabregas

    ReplyDelete
  23. Coutinho, kick the ball harder son. You'll score more goals.

    ReplyDelete
  24. See my sister will never give you that

    ReplyDelete
  25. Why did we get rid of Shelvey? Wonderful finisher

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well done Jonjo. Karma for that elbow....

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh fabianski, one of those nights. Will buy you a point after. Should have cleared that from shelvey.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thanks peanut head!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Is Mignolet wearing rollerblades?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Migno 's got competition ....

    ReplyDelete
  31. Up to 8th - is that our highest league position this season?

    ReplyDelete
  32. If Markovic was a red card, so is that.

    ReplyDelete
  33. This is where I'd bring on Mario for the last 15 minutes for Sterling.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Why take off our main outlet? Only to invite pressure

    ReplyDelete
  35. And good goal diff Hopefully ....

    ReplyDelete
  36. Up there with Spurs match

    ReplyDelete
  37. Lallana well done lad!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'd rather wait a bit longer.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Like another 18 minutes or so? :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I disagree... I say put Mario is a situation where we're up, and try to get him going. Make him the main outlet and give him a run.

He's not played well, but he's got talent. We need to tap into it eventually.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Shelvey is still a good payer for us;-)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yep now the game's in the bag why not!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Mignolet could have just easily come out and catch that ball yet he makes Can clear it out...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Now was a good time. The game needed to be in the bag...touch wood.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Sterling was lucky there. Needs to keep his cool.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Raheem was a naughty boy - right in front of linesman . Could be looked at later

    ReplyDelete
  47. Holy shit, it's Borini...

    ReplyDelete
  48. He's got 3 minutes to get a red, you can do it borini :-)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Just make sure it's on Shelvey...

    ReplyDelete
  50. Signings finally look like coming good

    Markovic
    Lallana
    Can
    Moreno
    Sakho
    Manquillo

Just question of Lovren and Balotelli i have faith in Lovren

But no more Gerrard,Allen and Johnson

    ReplyDelete
  51. Signings finally look like coming good

    Markovic
    Lallana
    Can
    Moreno
    Sakho
    Manquillo

Just question of Lovren and Balotelli i have faith in Lovren

But no more Gerrard,Allen and Johnson.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I still see a lot of hope for Balotelli in this team.

    ReplyDelete
  53. thought we would win with this line up but no doubt Rodgers will bring back Gerard next game ....its amazing what you get when you play your best players in there right position

    ReplyDelete
  54. I dont see it
i just think lfc as a whole switched off

    ReplyDelete
  55. A couple of good performances doesn't mean they're 'coming good'. Consistently performing well over a number of months is what matters, not performing well against lesser Premier League teams.

    ReplyDelete
  56. We say that everytime he players well and then his inconsistency kicks in

    ReplyDelete
  57. Can proved you wrong Jaimie

    ReplyDelete
  58. 5 points off top 4. Alright, come on lads.

    ReplyDelete
  59. That was pretty cool; for a moment there I could have sworn it was December 2013. Sterling should've bagged a brace; it's clear he hasn't yet developed the killer instincts of a striker, instead looking to dribble or pass. I'll forgive Sakho his error, he'd been solid up until that point and has had a good couple of weeks. Oh, and our front three of Coutinho, Lallana and Shelvey collectively tore Swansea a new one ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  60. not so much oxymoron but moron eh jk ...i wonder if jk has a sense of humor and will leave this on

    ReplyDelete
  61. Sorry, but that is exactly what coming goods means... At least we're playing exciting football again

    ReplyDelete
  62. I don't see Rodgers bringing Gerrard for the next game, the midfield was excellent in particular. he has no justification for doing so.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Agreed... he's gotten a bad rap this year. Played in a strategy that doesn't suit his strengths.

We get him going and it'll only make us better.

    ReplyDelete
  64. a great prospect...such composure, still think he's better suited in middle of park, but whilst we play the three he deserves to keep place

    ReplyDelete
  65. Emphatic performance and this is what happens when you pick the right players. If we do not play the same line up, I do not know what I will do. Gerrard's role as a starter is over. Now, he can come off the bench and change games when needed and play big games. Our set pieces were also good.

    ReplyDelete
  66. With such a performance 4th is very achievable, maybe even 3rd

    ReplyDelete
  67. Finally a performance to be happy about.

    ReplyDelete
  68. thought they both had a decent game...saying that a lot of team did tonight,

    ReplyDelete
  69. this wasn't a Rodgers master plan he fell into it through injuries and mounting games .......the real acid test is will he drop gerrard for two games because soon as gerrard or allen enters this equation it goes pear shaped

    ReplyDelete
  70. I still back the rafa for br campaign

    ReplyDelete
  71. When we lose it's always Rodgers fault but when we win there are plenty of explanations.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Lallana off to QPR!

    ReplyDelete
  73. I was all doom and gloom. I'm pleasantly surprised!
Good points: Can's power & composure.
    Coutinho creative form.
    Lallana's confident display.
    Team had great intensity.
    No Gerrard therefore better fluidity.
Sakho solidity against Bony the ox.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Yeah, but soon that composure will become carelessness, but yeah he deserves his place.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Was a great performance but Rodgers has woken up far to late. We will need to win about 15 of our remaining games to make sure we secure 4th spot.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Let's wait for a few more results like this... But it is promising.

    ReplyDelete
  77. With a top striker or Sturridge ( if fit) 4th maybe

    ReplyDelete
  78. Obviously Rodgers deserves credit for the changes but some of them have been called for for many months now. The test will be to see whether he will put Lovren or Johnson back in. This is the team we have to build on.

    ReplyDelete
  79. See how Lallana and Coutinho are freed when Gerrard is not playing. I think Gerrard dominates them whereas Hendo lets them play. Overall very happy.

    ReplyDelete
  80. read my posts with this line up i said we would win comfortable...if he changes it we will struggle ..i don't have a problem with Rodgers as long as he picks teams based on ability and not nostalgia or favoritism

    ReplyDelete
  81. We have to take it one game at a time. We have to first get a run of wins and then contemplate top 4. There is still lot of work to do and improvements to be made.

    ReplyDelete
  82. spot on rohan ive been saying that all season......has rodgers got the nerve to drop rodgers and not play allen or johnson or lovren long term

    ReplyDelete
  83. For a minute there I forgot we still have Lovren to come back- yikes

    ReplyDelete
  84. We had a good run last year after Christmas, but at the time we had “He Whose Name Must Not Be Spoken.” Hopefully we can do it again without him

    ReplyDelete
  85. Yep, just wait next game Gerrard is playing again forcing Hendo out of his favoured position and causing Lallana and Coutinho to go into their shells.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I think Can is better than lovren

    ReplyDelete
  87. oh i forgot only gerrard can pass .......what a ridiculous statement

    ReplyDelete
  88. My sock is better than Lovren

    ReplyDelete
  89. Spot on. The beauty of doing transfer business early is that you can find your best team early. But nah not Brendan.

    ReplyDelete
  90. 19 games left, 15 wins?

Would be great if we can pull it off but for me it just ain't going to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  91. tino hendo and lallana looked like different players full of running and creativity, as soon as Gerard plays hendo goes into his shell for fear of cramping gerrads style ......

    ReplyDelete
  92. IT WAS HIS ARM NOT HIS ELBOW BUT HE COULD HAVE GOT A RED CARD- SHELVEY MADE MORE GOOD FORWARD PASSES TONIGHT THAN ALLEN HAS MADE IN A SEASON. OH AND AN OWN GOAL.

    ReplyDelete
  93. We could have seen a team like this many, many, many games ago but Rodgers stubbornness with Lambert and Balotelli up on their own and slow build up play has seen Rodgers get egg in the face.

    ReplyDelete
  94. if lovren has can and sako at the side of him and hendo and lucas in front he will look better because he wont be continually exposed

    ReplyDelete
  95. Now that Bendan's shown the owners that he is finally getting his act together let's hope they give him the money to buy a GK and DECENT striker !

    ReplyDelete
  96. Such a class goal that third goal watching the replay...lovely football, more of the same please

    ReplyDelete
  97. I still don't think he's a better option than Toure in central defence. Plus, he was at fault for Swansea's goal.

    ReplyDelete
  98. We might need 15, we might need 10. You don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Harsh...I think in the grander picture of things he showed quality and ability to be a very good player for us. Great composure for a young lad.

    ReplyDelete
  100. No, that's short-termist thinking. Similarly, if a player has a couple of bad games in a row, it doesn't mean their career is failing. It's how they perform over a longer period of time. Liverpool have beaten Burnley and Swansea back-to-back - big deal. Prior to that, it was one win in five games. When LFC are playing consistently well, then it'll be time for cautious optimism.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Exactly. Needs to do it consistently until the end of the season

    ReplyDelete
  102. If Shelvey faces retro action then so might Raheem

    ReplyDelete
  103. Who hyped Can beyond recognition?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Blatant red card but so was Sterling's at the end. If he was to have got a straight red and a 3 match ban we'd have been up the proverbial creek with our paddle suspended. Would hope Rodgers will be having a stern word with him. Probably Stevie too.
Red cards aside I thought the lads were very good tonight. It was unclear to me why Manquillo and Moreno were dropped but I definitely think they add to our game. When Sturridge comes back our attack will cause teams real problems. Only one defeat in our last ten games, slowly creeping up the table and coming back to form.
Can and Markovic showed some nice passes and touches too

    ReplyDelete
  105. He is far more composed than Toure and he is als alot stronger and quicker with better feet. As for he was at fault that is harsh, it was Hendersons poor pass and marking as pointed out by GN and JC in the post match analysis. Definitley not Can's fault whatsoever.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Haha even Logan's happy, we MUST'VE been good!

    ReplyDelete
  107. For all those worried about Styerling getting a ban
at most would be 2 games

I think Markovic could do a job there

    ReplyDelete
  108. How BR does not recognize this I have no idea.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Best since spurs !

Were we even this happy last year : )

    ReplyDelete
  110. I think Raheem was off tonight and his frustration finally showed - no excuses though and hope he doesn't get retro action taken

    ReplyDelete
  111. I am confused now. Do we still need an entire new team and manager in January?

    ReplyDelete
  112. After what Sterling did I would rather not talk about it,

That run from Shelvey is the type of thing that a lot of reds talk about when saying why they like him. The complete inaction from him in the run up to our second is why I don't.

    ReplyDelete
  113. We are going to need Arsenal and the mancs to f*** up big time if we are going to have a chance of finishing 4th and then their is also Southampton.

At least I am not keeping my hopes up. We are going to need more than 30 points to finish 4th.

    ReplyDelete
  114. But might stop momentum now that we have finally got some !

    ReplyDelete
  115. Wouldn't be surprised if both Shelvey and Sterling face retro punishment

    ReplyDelete
  116. There has been a massive improvement all over the pitch since the Sunderland game and a fundamental change by going back to pace and movement up front etc... We were superb against Arsenal, and I thought we showed enough against United too that the corner might be turning. As you say, it needs to be over a long period of time.Credit where it's due, you were one of the first to mention how bad Rodgers signings have been, but this summers batch are starting to look a lot better to me.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Still need a striker and solid keeper for me

    ReplyDelete
  118. Nicolas Chamberlain10:20 pm, December 29, 2014

It wasn't Sakho's fault. Not one player was tracking the man from Iceland. Lucas, Henderson and Can were all sleeping.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Markovic looks much better with the ball than without doesn't he. Loves the one two. Can slightly off defensively for their goal but so comfortable on the ball it's like its infectious throughout the defence. I am a critic of Skrtel's but have to say I thought he played really well. Up until he decided to get in a battle with Gomis that is but that is excusable.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I can remember some on here saying that this team was not good enough to finish top 4 and I stated that a new manager would get better results out of the squad.

Believe Rodgers has cut off his nose to spite his own face. Decided to change things a bit too late.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Coming being the operative word. If they were doing it they would just be good!

    ReplyDelete
  122. Markovic, Lallana, Can, and Moreno cost a combined £68m, so playing well is the bare minimum that should be expected. I'm not going to start worshipping the ground they walk on just because they're finally starting to do their jobs.

A few good performances do not define a season, and overall, Lallana et al have not delivered, which is why Liverpool are mid-table. That may change over the next 5 months, and I hope it does, but right now, they need to do a hell of a lot more to be considered transfer successes.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I thought Can played really well tonight, confident and composed. His run out from the back towards the end of the game totally caught Swansea of guard. I hope he keeps his place in the team.

    ReplyDelete
  124. The original point was they look like coming good, which is fair. Doesn't mean they don't have a long way to go, which is exactly what Lallana said.

    ReplyDelete
  125. The difference between a transfer success and looking like they may be coming good are very different. Your a joyless monster.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Some would say it's just papering over the cracks ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  127. thats exactly why he will do it :)

    ReplyDelete
  128. But that is what it was. Rodgers was in a delusional state and has woken up to late.

    ReplyDelete
  129. They're not successess yet but they are starting to work. Lallana seems to moved a few million up in worth towards his transfer fee, finally playing like a 15 million pounder haha!

    ReplyDelete
  130. Anyone else loving that the opposition keeper had more of a stinker than ours?

    ReplyDelete
  131. the fact that we haven't really played with a true striker tops it :-)

    ReplyDelete
  132. Rodgers, Rodgers, Rodgers .... yawn ;)

    ReplyDelete
  133. Mignolet needs a leg transplant. Hopefully Stevie will swap legs with him once he's retired, until then Mig should be wired up to receive electro shocks every time his foot touches the ball.
No smiley face... I'm deadly serious

    ReplyDelete
  134. He could have killed him with that handbag

    ReplyDelete
  135. Lovingw e winning 4-1 without a striker?

    that rodgesr genius

    ReplyDelete
  136. Yeah too many comparison with Allen
even though eh should not be playing now he was good in diamond formation
but until Sturridge comes back in wil not play him

    ReplyDelete
  137. But what if he gets the legs of a serial killer? Then our already unsettled defence will be in mortal danger!
Wrote that after reading the first sentence. Liked it too much to delete.

As for electroshocks, perhaps an exploding neckbace fortress style?

    I'm bloody giddy right now,

    ReplyDelete
  138. if results go in our favour again next week we'll move above spurs to 7th and 3 points off 4th place (if Southampton draw with arsenal). fingers crossed...

    ReplyDelete
  139. apurs facing chelsea
west ahm hopefully lose to west brom

    ReplyDelete
  140. Bog off Shamsy I expect consistency in my replies.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Spurs have Ski next and should we beat Leicester we up to7th- a nice Saints Arse draw and we 3 pts off top 4 - green shoots

    ReplyDelete
  142. Jaimie teh palyers are doing what you wnated last season
    midfielders chipping in more
    Sterling
    Lallana
    henderson
    Coutinho
decent goals and assists for midfielders

Hopefully Markovic gets his first soon has ability

    ReplyDelete
  143. I am so happy
i needed a win like that to cheer me up

    ReplyDelete
  144. west ham losing to west brom is highly unlikely. im just a tad hopeful because spurs, man city, west ham, utd and newcastle are yet to visit anfield in the league...

    ReplyDelete
  145. He's lucky to be alive! .... But on a more serious note, you put your hand towards somebody's face and it's a red card in the modern game so was very lucky not be given a straight red and be missing next 3 games, as well as shelvey

    ReplyDelete
  146. Too true. Let's hope both incidents are left alone

    ReplyDelete
  147. Yeah i always wish former lfc players well
even if i criticize them while they are here
Only Joe Cole and Alberto Riera are the exceptions to that rule

    ReplyDelete
  148. Allen is a squad player. If he could find a few goals or assists, then it would be very different, but he's had enough time to produce something and clearly hasn't done enough. Shame because he's seems like a good lad who always gives his best, but you need a bit more at LFC

    ReplyDelete
  149. Yeah but i dont think he can be classed in same category as Adam
at one point he did belong here
but i thinjkn he only Suits that diamond formation
    he palyed well sv spurs

    ReplyDelete
  150. Does Gerrard have another day on the bench on New Years day? I reckon some "squad rotation will occur" and he'll be in

    ReplyDelete
  151. hopefully neither

    ReplyDelete
  152. Arsenal are only 5 points in front, with a tough trip to Southampton coming up. Best possible scenario out of that is we're then 2 points behind.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Can played a blinder at centre half....he is much better on the ball than Toure. I would also question whether you can say he is not a centre half....he is 20 and played som gsmes at full back and CB last season...given his size and mobility he could be the perfect modern cb in Rodgers type of system. He showed composure when the ball came in the box, chesting it down and playing it because he was aware of what's around him. Too early to say its a long term solution i grant but he has showed real promise in the position.

Just want to highlight the folly of people writing off the new signings almost as a matter of fact after half a season. There are a lot of talented but mainly young players signed which was necessary for the future of the team. It was always going to take that many players to bed in and a combination of that, balotelli not having fired and Sturridge's injury have made it difficult. For all the doom and gloom the new signings are almost all contributing now...four playing tonight and even Balotelli showing real signs of life in the ManU game, if we beat Leicester and the other games go to form on NYD we will be just three points of 4th, with momentum and the return of Sturridge imminent, I think we will go on to qualify for the CL comfortably...probably at the expense of ManU still for me.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Only if he is in that role where Coutinho or Lallana play everywhere else no

    ReplyDelete
  155. Henderson
    2 goals 5 assists
    ramsey
    3 goals 2 assists
    Yaya Toure
    6 goals 1 asissts
    chamberlain
    1 goal 1 asisits
    Wilshere
    1 goal 1 assits
    Oscar
    3 goals 5 assists

so only Oscar by one goal/assist has done better then players in other top teams that play a similar role to him
despite Hendos 5 asisits none where to Costa ,Augero , sanchez to feed

    ReplyDelete
  156. Well, that was an improvement! Been picking up momentum recently. Very well done to the players. Brendan has finally settled on a system and I really do believe Can is better than Lovren lol he's very composed which the other CB's could learn from! Lovren may be better protected if Lucas and hendo are infront of the back 3, but I'm definitely happy with Can at CB. See how he goes in the next few games there. Gerrard. I love the guy. Best memories from down the years- I think he should be benched because Hendo (as captain too tonight) handled it all very well. He's box to box and Lucas is tidy and effective next to him, allowing Countino, Lallana and sterling as well as the wing backs to flood forward. Still believe we need a gk for competition to Mignolet, a DM like schneiderlin or a box to box beast like Sissoko and a striker- a hard working striker though. One that will press the opposition defence as this is a facet of our tactic. Great result tonight. 5points off unbelievably, going on how poor we have been at times this season!

    ReplyDelete
  157. Might be worth looking at appearances and minutes mate. I am quite sure Hendo has played more than all of them.

    ReplyDelete
  158. I agree but I reckon it's a done deal he starts in place of Lucas or something similar. I'd like to see him further up the pitch, but who would you drop. Lallana and Coutinho are looking great (which by the way coincided with playing Sterling up front and pushing the oppositions defence back ten yards opening up the space).

    ReplyDelete
  159. Nailed on red card....but as Neville said how can the ref credibly say he didn't see the incident...multiple camera angles showed him looking at it with a clear line of sight. We will just have to accept the ref has dropped one there. Unfortunately Rodgers needs to do more of what Mourinho just did....it shouldn't be part of the game but the reality is that Chelsea will now get some 'kind' decisions in the next few games to make up for the pen they should have had. It should not influence the refs but it does and our man is missing a trick by not making more of things like this.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Does that work for the Sterling thing too? Does the linesman count as he was right there?

    ReplyDelete
  161. Yeah exactly the same....can't get retrospective action.....if the linesman says he didn't see that they will have to give him a white stick.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Great stuff. That is a weight off. That would have been a horrible twist to an otherwise good night.

    ReplyDelete
  163. It's that old test though - if you're not sure about a player, ask yourself would he get in the city or Chelsea midfield and the answer is no way. Would Spurs or Aresnal fans want him? At least some of our other question mark players have potential.

    ReplyDelete
  164. I don't think the league form suggests that at all. We were totally written off in most quarters two weeks ago....now if we beat Leicester at Anfield, which on the form just shown is likely...we will be 3 points off 4th just by stringing 3 wins together....the Manure are going to go through a rocky patch and Arsenal change their form from sublime to ridiculous game by game....the top two are gone but I still think 3rd is still up for grabs

    ReplyDelete
  165. Don't need a whole new team: 4 Top Class players:

  166. Right on. Hendo has been asked to play a variety of positions but has still managed to contribute in a team struggling to score goals. He's doing well.

  167. Did you not see henderson leave the Swansea player run past him. Henderson included in ball watching in the box.

  168. It's very easy to see that Emre Can is a far superior player to Kolo, whether technically or otherwise, and in whatever position. He has been trusted to occupy one of the CB roles, and BR should be lauded for doing that instead of playing a mid 30s player who is clearly over-the-hill. I don't know where the issue is with playing a young, energetic, quality player over an old player who has done nothing to merit a starting spot. Nice win by the Red Men but defensively we are at sea.

  169. Love that line-up. Would have loved a place for Markovic tho. He's a handful that must be constantly guarded or he's gone with the ball. Great job lads. Always knew Shelvey would eventually come good for us;-).

  170. I was thrilled to bits with the game today. For one game at least we looked like 2013 LFC. Three of the best changes: sitting Gerrard, resting Toure with Can and reinstating Moreno and Manquillo. It was clear that M & M got the memo about defense first, especially for Manquillo. They both played well. Hendo and Coutinho controlling midfield and feeding Coutinho, Sterling, Lallana and Moreno when he came forward. This was by far the most fluid we have looked since Tottenham.
I still feel Gerrard should be a 30 minute a game asset not a guaranteed starter anymore. It wasn't an accident that we swarmed and flowed better and there were less forced long bombs and better player interchange across the whole field. I felt if BR had the stones to sit Gerard we would play better. I was however dead wrong thinking we would tie if he sat and lost if he played.
Lastly, Mignolet is still horrific in distribution even when he had the opportunity to pick up the ball he doesn't until the last second: why I have no idea. I loved his signing but it is abundantly clear we need a reliable goalie who is an athletic shot stopper AND controls the box!

  172. 100% correct Rohan. Many of us feel the same way. I doubt BR has the balls to coach like Fergie and use Gerard in the 30-35 minute role on some games and sit every third or fourth game entirely. Fully agree that a first class ruthless and persistent striker, a DM and big time goalie are needed. three new big boy players not another mob scene of 20 yr old kids.

  173. No i dont think hes a C.F

  174. The likes of Moreno and Can were bought for potential and boy are they showing that couldnt be happier with both on their seasons efforts.

  175. Rodgers' initial stated reason for dropping Gerrard into a deeper role was because he no longer had the energy to press the ball upfield as required by Rodgers' system. As Gerrard has shown he's not good enough for the deeper role, at least for not more than one game in three, I'd say his time as a starter is up. He can still fight for his place but has to accept that LFC is moving on. This won't take anything away from his legendary status; in fact, it might enhance his stature as a servant of the club who put its interests above his own.

  176. It was a red for Markovic so it should be Red for Shelvy too.

  185. Goes along with my point overall though...

These types of mistakes don't happen this often with defensively-sound teams.

Once in a while is bound to happen. But this is a recurring theme on a seemingly weekly basis. At some point it has to be considered a systemic issue as opposed to an individual player issue.
