'He'll get goals': Lawro hints at LFC 'interest' in 'brilliant' £10m star. Sign in Jan?

In October, Ex-Reds midfielder David Thompson urged Liverpool to think about signing 'Brilliant' former Spurs striker Jermain Defoe, and it appears that LFC legend Mark Lawrenson is also keen to see the ex-England international at Anfield.

Prior to Liverpool's latest goalscoring fail against Newcastle, Thompson tweeted:

"I would love to see Defoe come to Anfield in the [transfer] window He still has plenty of legs, and would really add to the squad"

Speaking to the BBC today, Lawro also hinted that Defoe is a good potential signing for Liverpool. He explained:

"Defoe should never have left the Premier League. He'll always get goals. I can imagine a number of clubs being interested in him. I wonder if Liverpool are among them - stranger things have happened."

Hmmm. If the answer to Liverpool's issues up-front is to bring in another 32-year old striker in the twilight of his career, then someone is asking the wrong question (!)

In a recent interview, Toronto General manager Tim Bezbatchenko confirmed that the club had received an offer for the striker, and conceded that the club will sell for the right price. He told reporters:

“Jermain has not asked to leave, but if you’re not 100 per cent committed in what we’re doing, then we have to sit down and talk. We'll expect 'a lot of money. More than we paid for him"

One of the biggest reasons to steer clear of Defoe is his injury history. Since moving to the MLS, he has been plagued with issues, and he readily acknowledged this recently, when he told the BBC:

"I've been playing 15 months without a rest so I think that's probably the key factor in me getting injuries. I need to shut down and rest my legs. And then we'll take it from there. We'll see what happens when I go home."

Injuries aside, is Defoe a better option than Lambert, Balotelli and/or Borini? Based on current form, it's not like he could do any worse.

That said, it's almost certainly a non-starter. Toronto have reportedly slapped a £10m price-tag on Defoe, and when asked about that this week, Toronto chief executive Tim Leiweke told reporters:

"We own his contract, so we're not going to give him away, and so we're in a good spot. This his will end well for TFC - I guarantee it. No Designated Player will leave and we go backwards on the capital invested. That's not going to happen".

Thanks but no thanks.

  1. No Thank you. We need world class

  2. Waste of time. Don't fancy Benzema either. Relatively good scoring record but surrounded by great creativity and players who make space. He is a 'six yard box' kind of guy who drifts in and out of games. Balotelli has not had this kind of service and therefor has not scored goals, like for like if you ask me.

  3. Defoe now ive heard it all that must nearly be the bottom of the barrel, next stop scouting pub teams.

  4. He is better than Lambert.

  5. He can though create mayhem in the box - but then we've already got Mignolet and Lovren........

    ReplyDelete
  6. He is another Sturridge except he cant score different type to Lambert but prefer Lambert now not 5 years ago though.

  7. No i want a striker that can do the following things:

    * go past people

defoe cant turn people inside out and we have enough pensioners lambert,Toure,Gerrard

  8. We need strikers that can turn people inside out

When Raheem Sterling had his second shot vs De Gea i was so happy because of the way he completely skilled Jones like Sturridge does

we need players like that it does not ahve to be world class

  9. I think we can safely add Brad to that list

  10. why are you always changing your names?

  11. It's funny how Paulo Dybala was on nobody's transfer list a few weeks ago.JK put up a article on him and now according to some he should be targeted. The influence of JK's articles and YouTube:)

  12. no more crocs please ...........im unsure why an injury hit over 3o is a step up from Lambert and balo ... especially at 10m

  13. Just on a nicer note great to see Sterling win the golden boy award he joins a list of stars who have won it lets hope he is the best of the lot.

  14. more competition for the bench? He couldn't get into the Spurs side in his prime.

  15. He was first linked with us by mirror n metro

    ReplyDelete
  16. Read 2 reports saying Origi's loan could be cancelled out with 5.5m payment (according to their director) and the other is City want Sterling possible 60m offer- that one seems more far fetched

  17. everybody saying they want klopp should see whats happening in Germany right now

    ReplyDelete
  18. Sterlings future should be sorted soon.
We need to know whether he wants to stay or go , if he wants to leave fair play , look at what has happen to Gerrards career staying at lfc

  19. Mr Shamsy/Code you never wanted Paulo Dybala until JK put up his article. The Mirror and Metro ran the story first? That's irrelevant!
Sheikh you also put a question to the forum and asked if someone could tell you how good Lacazette was a couple of days ago.You said you've never seen him play before. Now he's leapfrogged others and is your top target.
I like the player, that's not my issue. But from not seeing Lacazette play two days ago, to being your most wanted striker.Seems like you rely on others to guide you.

  20. I look at Fifa stats for guidance
You have to look at their pace, skill, stamina, acceleration, dribbling attributes.
Doumbia, Lacazettees fifa stats suggest either of them will be perfect for lfc

  21. Klopp has seen all his best players leave without any investment back into the team.

I want to see Rodgers beating Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title on a shoe string budget. Rodgers does not know how lucky he has been with all the money he has been provided yet we are mid table this season and look far off from finishing even top 4.

I will take Klopp ahead of Rodgers in a heartbeat.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Cud not agree more! if the club have any sense theyll be trying to secure him now, because if Arsenal finish outside the top-4 this year and Wenger goes theyll have first dibs on Klopp im certain!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah mate, pretty sure FSG are looking at many options at the moment. Klopp will most definitely be on the list.

    ReplyDelete
  24. If no Klopp, Biesla, Montinair, De Boer for me.

    ReplyDelete
  25. de Boer, Cruyff and we are made but if we have a chance of securing Klopp then we need to do everything we can to bring him to Anfield. Going to be difficult with City sniffing around too.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Sociedad manager who got them to the top 4 and playing some breathtaking football with Vela and Griezmann.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think City is fine with Pellegrini. I am worried about Arsenal sniffing around and some other European Clubs.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Horrible yes but Johnson being injured could be a blessing in disguise too.

Sakho at least can get a chance now.

    ReplyDelete
  29. without any investment? thats just not true... they bought kagawa and 2 top strikers and a proven Bundeliga CB this summer

    ReplyDelete
  30. Villa done us a favour now we need to back it up

    ReplyDelete
  31. Did they spend anywhere near as much as we did?

Jurgen Klopp has won the Bundesliga twice in a row with much less money than what we have spent under Rodgers in his time at Anfield.

Would Rodgers be able to achieve the same as what Klopp has at Dortmund in such a sort time. Do you hear me laughing?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Adrian Ramos, Matthias Ginter and Ciro Immobile are not exactly the top top players that a Bayern or Real go after and the investment is nothing compared to what even we have invested.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Suarez scores his first la liga goal- sigh

    ReplyDelete
  34. ramos is a top Bundesliga player, and Immobile scored 23 goals last season...

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ramos is in no way different from any of the one season wonders we have signed in the past. Immobile also is unproven outside of one or two great seasons. They might still turn out to be good.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I still don't see why we don't sign Championship strikers like Gestede or Rhodes. Look at Austin and his 11 goals for QPR so far this year. All three of these players are better than Lambert or Balo.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Think small achieve small

    ReplyDelete
  38. Would man utd ever sign rhodes or lambert or chelsea sign these players

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm with you DerBaumann. If you look at Dortmund's summer buys overall they wouldn't have come cheap.Ramos, Matthias Ginter, Immobile, Shinji Kagawa, Sahin.
Adrian Ramos was one of Bundesliga's top scorers scores last season.Immobile arrived from Torino with a fantastic record. He scored something like 20 goals in 30 starts.
It's what Ramos and Ciro Immoble did last season which created hefty price tags.Despite both transfer fees being undisclosed.Only someone with barely any knowledge of how the transfer market works, would argue they went to Borussia Dortmund on small money deals.
If some players bought have no global big name value, i guess that equals no investment:)

    ReplyDelete
  40. most of rodgers signings are im mobile

    ReplyDelete
  41. I always thought Butler was the talented one anyway

    ReplyDelete
  42. How about we just sign one good CF, DM and GK, and then we put that check book away and work on what we got. That's all we need at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  43. What was their net spend?
they actually had a larger net spend then rodgers klopp did
    Rodgers was 35m
simmilar to qpr and west ham and hull city

    ReplyDelete
  44. All thoose saying Klopp in he actually ha a simmialr net spend to rodgers

    in
    Kagawa 8m
    Immobile 16m
    sahin 5m
    ginter 8m
    ramos 8m

    total= 45m

    out
    julian scheiber 2m

    so 43m net spend

thats 8m then rodgers so klopp is worse then rodgesr in transfer market

    ReplyDelete
  45. Who said Klopp had a similar net spend to Brendan Rodgers?

    ReplyDelete
  46. I did right now courtasy of wikipedia and transfermarket.co.uk

    ReplyDelete
  47. i did coutasy of wikipedia
and transfer market dot co dot uk

  48. I live in Toronto and watched TFC games. He's not what we want. Not managing top scorer in MLS but expecting to score goals for a club like LFC is impossible

    ReplyDelete
  49. You should do some more research regarding Klopp's transfer history. You will feel humiliated.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I suppose Balotelli is your idea of thinking big. If so, I'll take a goalscorer anytime...no matter how small his reputation is. ManU pays thru the nose for DeMaria...haven't got squat from him. Austin has scored 15 more PL goals than Balo...would that we had a guy who scored 15 goals already. You have fallen victim to big money-big production hype. Tell me you wouldn't rather have Austin than Balotelli and I'll laugh in your face.

    ReplyDelete
  51. It is easy to score in bottom leagues as Carroll,Lambert,Downing,Adam have proved

    ReplyDelete
  52. No Austin suits qprs style of play they are good at set pieces and he plays well with Bobby Zamora with him who provides a lot of knock downs

At liverpool we have no bobby zamora or joey barton to provide corners

Balotelli would score more gaols then austin if he was at qpr

style of play is important , Carroll na d Lambert were also good goalscorers but they do not suit our style of play

    lacazette ,doumbia
    continental players
balotelli simply also did not suit our play wish requires pace and high pressing

    ReplyDelete
  53. Easy except for us. Zero goals vs hull, Sunderland and Newcastle. Right now any proven striker would do because we don't have one.

    ReplyDelete
  54. gerrard is bad at set pieces now

    ReplyDelete
  55. Lets buy Austin
Huddlestone, Redmond, Colback, Richardson, Curtis Davies, Ritchie ,Ward,Jedinak, ,Dunne, Ings, Heaton

lets buy all the mediocre players in the world so we can finish top 4

    that makes sense right pandle?
