Big Surprise? 75% of fans tell FSG to reject Prem 'legend' as next LFC boss

After squandering two vital points at Ludogorets on Wednesday, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers remains under intense pressure, and a long list of managers - including Jurgen Klopp and Rafa Benitez - are reportedly waiting in the wings to replace him. Anfield legend Jamie Carragher is another surprise contender for the LFC job, but what do Reds fans think about that possibility?

According to British bookmakers, Carra - a vociferous critic of LFC's ongoing defensive deficiencies - is currently 10-1 third-favourite to succeed Rodgers, but a recent poll on the site suggests Liverpool fans are not too enamoured by the idea.

* 15450 fans participated in the poll.
* 75% of participants voted NO to Carra as manager.

Given Carra's enduring popularity amongst fans, this is a surprising verdict, but, it's heartening to see that Reds fans are not blinded by reverence to the extent that it damages their ability to see the wood for the trees.

For me, there's no way Carra should be considered for the Liverpool job, and I'm sure he'd agree. He has an amazing legacy at Anfield, and I'd hate to see that tarnished by an unsuccessful spell in the Liverpool hot-seat.

From a purely practical standpoint, Carra - repeatedly hailed as a 'legend' by Rodgers - is not ready for such a huge job; he doesn't yet have the relevant UEFA coaching qualifications, and there are clearly better, more experienced candidates out there.

Additionally, like Rodgers, Carra arguably doesn't have the profile to attract big-name players to Anfield, which is something that continues to negatively impact Liverpool's forward progress. As such, if FSG make a change, international renown/aura must (IMO) be one of the pre-requisite qualities required of the new manager.

It's probably all moot anyway - things look pretty bleak right now, but it's still possible for Rodgers to ride out the storm and keep his job. To that end, qualification for the second-phase of the Champions League is absolutely imperative, and could conceivably provide the impetus to shake off the atrocious form and start picking up results.

For Rodgers, though, the alternative is unthinkable. Elimination from the Champions League will knock the stuffing out of the club, and with the (seemingly) fragile mentality of the players, it could send the team into an even more damaging downward spiral.

If that happens, then, in the words of Private Hudson:

  1. You're right - the game against Basel is really a defining moment for Liverpool under Rodgers. It may be short sighted to make decisions based on the results of just one game but the impacts are indeed so far reaching. The loss of income, confidence and support for the club would be quite damaging and given how well we did last year it would represent a massive drop in stature. We will have gone from title challengers in one of the toughest leagues in the world to being unable to get out of a CL group against two average teams. The players would be devastated, as would the fans. What the club really needs is to win that game, a home game, a classic Anfield European tie with the crowd and the city behind them. Liverpool need to show what they are made of and they need to go into that game with no fear. Someone needs to lead them there and Rodgers can't be that guy from the sidelines. If Gerrard is picked for the game then he needs to lead from the front and set the tone and the pace for the game, that's his job as captain. This one last time he needs to drag Liverpool out of mediocrity and remind them what it means to be a good football team.

  2. Agree, but there's one point that everyone seems to misunderstand for me : the PL being the toughest league is different to being the league with the best teams, apart from chelsea no other team are CL contender and if we want to dominate Europe we have to do like other top europeans team and built a squad that can dominate the league.

  3. Too right mate, great post. Sensible, rounded and informed. Refreshing to say the least. YNWA

  4. I'm with you on that. Not all the time can we say that English teams are up there with the European elite and lately it's been other leagues that have topped the CL. It's just that the week-in and week-out slog of the Premier League is the hardest to endure and the most likely to produce upsets. Or at least that's my vague impression. I honestly don't watch enough Spanish or Italian football to be 100% sure about that.

    ReplyDelete
  5. That extends to every player in that picture. No communication, either - not one of them seems to be pointing/shouting about the forward in space.
All six players are ball watching and not picking up opposition and are too close together.

  6. Mrkovic is suffering the same fate that befell that forgotten winger Assaidi

    ReplyDelete
  7. from what i see top teams are domnant in their league and big upset seems pretty much a specialty of the PL, my point was that despite having finished high struggling in CL is not that much of a surprise to me because top teams have gotten weaker more than smaller teams becoming stronger.

  8. Indeed he has never had that run and its all down to Brogers sticking with the lone striker

    ReplyDelete
  9. On Sakho you are wrong. Just wait until we sell him and you fing him in Arse or chelski that whn u will appreciate him. BR is makeing everyone worse- he was given Raheem by KK and is making him worse, now Mario is looking lost, Can aint being given a run in the team, Markovic, Assaidi, Suso, Ibe. goodness me. BR doesnt needs more money to buy again.just needs to shore up his tactics and formations

  10. Hoping that this weekend is BR's last with us so that the new manager has time to try out his combinations and see for himself who to replace SG and Mingoclown with in time for the Jan window

    i am a rodgers supporter
but some of his decisions baffle me
leaving gerrard and lambert on till the end while they are both in their late thirties is not right

Finally we play a satuarday 3:00 kick off game my favorite time

    .........................................lambert
    lallana................................henderson................sterling
    ......................................can............lucas
    moreno..........................lovren...............toure..........manquillo
    ................................................mignolet

    bench: balotelli,markovic,coutinho,allen,sakho,johnson.jones

i never ever wished injury upon someone but i hope gerrard can sprain something without too badly being hurt
if not rodgers will keep playing him to the detriment of the team

  13. Getting real tired of the bullshit coming out of the players' and manager's mouth...

  14. I do not want to say this but I can see us getting turned over by stoke on Saturday.

Stoke are a very strong team and have improved under Mark Hughes. They will out muscle us, win most of the first and second balls and will put defence under massive pressure.

As for Basel.. I honestly can not see us beating them.

    So far this season we

Conceded 18 goals - 1.5 goal per game
410 Clearances (shows how much pressure our defence has been under)
    Kept only 2 clean sheets
    Scored 15 goals - 1.25 per game
Made only 34 successful crosses out of 188
    % of Long Passes - 11.4%

    These stats are absolutely terrible.

The worst stat of all is that after 18 games we have scored the same amount of own goals as our top goal scorers which is Gerrard and Sterling - 3

  15. The thing is the Premier League, despite all debates is by far the most physically excruciating league. Other teams in other leagues have a much lighter schedule and since the disparity is so high between the top and bottom teams, the top one can afford to not spend much energy on those games. For example, Bayern only has a challenge in CL games. basicallly, they play only 15-20 hard games a year whereas PL teams play close to 50.

    ReplyDelete
  16. B R to be sacked - ODDS now 4/1 and falling - he still has not addressed the issues - rubbish defence of dead ball situations -players who are consistently underperforming being picked -with our Captain a prime example - give Jordan Williams a go cause they is no go in Stevie G

    ReplyDelete
  17. Premier League teams have been crap in Europe apart from Chelsea - SOON ONLY 3 TEAMS WILL QUALIFY - NOT FOUR

    ReplyDelete
  18. Kind of sad that all a team needs to do to beat Liverpool is 'outmuscle' them, no matter how much money Liverpool spend.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I don't think you could say he's done nothing to address the problems of last season. He did sign 3 defenders

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yea or just put any sort of ball in our penalty area and watch the chaos

    ReplyDelete
  21. Now, they do not even need that. All they need is for someone who can run with the ball which every team has and our defence will just fold.

    ReplyDelete
  22. There are more runners up and third/forth placed teams the tournament than Champions. They should change the name back to the European Cup!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Klopp is the way forward he'll attract the big names and can bring the best out of young players has a style of play similar to ours last season he's won titles built a club up from scratch plus Klopp is young rodger's is downfall are his singings and lacks the ability to attract world class players as much as i do like rodgers and the work he did last season

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think if we bring Klopp, his DoF needs to come too. And FSG wouldn't object to that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. But when they put the ball into the penalty area, they need to outmuscle us to score, and that's exactly what we do. Skrtel would be the worst ever WWE wrestler- he's the only guy who wrestles and he still loses.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well he's got a nice easy game coming up against Stoke who are real gentlemanly on the field

    ReplyDelete
  27. Skrtel is the best example of do not judge a book by its cover. When looking at him, he looks threatening with tattoos and all but when he comes on to the football pitch, he is outmuscled by even the the smallest of players.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Let's not continue putting pressure on everybody involved. Rodgers is a great manager and showed it last season and the season before. Let him work and give him time . Suport him and we will succeed. Patience is the key. It's true that we have endured alot but changing managers frequently would not help our cause. Arsenal did not win a cup fir 11 years until last season but still kept wenger and that is what we should also do. Putting everone's future and progress on the game against Basle is nonsense. We surely do not expect to win the CL. If we are not out against Basle we probably be out the game after so come on face reality

    ReplyDelete
  29. Most of Borinis goals with Sunderland came from penalties he is not good enough for Liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Didnt you tell me a day ago there was nothing wrong with the players we have and you reckoned all the newies and Borini were good.

    ReplyDelete
  31. If we lose to Basel when will we next be in CL -3 yrs 5 yrs Of course we were never likely to win it but would be nice to play well at least once before we bowed out

    ReplyDelete
  32. They are and like said in the same comment, he is not utilising them correctly and giving them a fair chance.

If your going to have a discussion with me great, if you are going to try and cherry pick certain comments then don't bother as it just makes you look like a troll.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yet he did not sign a DM which as we have seen just leaves our defence wide open.

He is still playing GJ and Skrtel regardless how bad they play.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Carragher should be kept as far away from LFC as possible.
This is the man that rate Houllier as a better Manager than Benitez. (read his autobiography).
He briefed against Rafa after he was dropped in favour or Skertel and Agger as the preferred Center Back Pairing.
He's poisonous and unhelpful comments in the last couple of months was uncalled for.
Frankly no player would come to Liverpool on his reputation because internationally none of the players rate his ability when we played.
Carragher was never a World Class player

As I said before, we'll know very soon if FSG are planning or are already planning a change of Manager/Coach.

We'll also know IF Rogers is is really driving the LFC signings or this 'COMMITTEE' is doing the signing of these so far poor signings.
That doesn't take away from the POOR GAME MANAGEMENT that Brendan has presided over.

IF Brendan is given REAL MONEY to buy a NEW KEEPER,DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER and STRIKER.
Regardless of if we can attract the players we should have signed or not, it'll be safe to assume that Brendan will be the Manager in December 2015.
IF Brendan is not given any MONEY it could be that FSG have decided that he can't be trusted with the MONEY and that they will wait to see what happens until the end of the season.
By that, it'll mean they are starting to look for alternatives between January and the Summer 2015.

My view is that Brendan will survive until 2015, but will fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.
    FSG will terminate Brendans contract.

The best thing that Brendan can really hope for is a dramatic turnaround but given what I have seen it's not looking likely and the crisis of now looking to each game as a season changer is desperate.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree his persistence with those two, Johnson in particular, is baffling

    ReplyDelete
  36. In their late thirties?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ah so it's his singing that's putting off the world class talent...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Whenever Liverpool seriously challenge for the PL title. The following season our form falls off a cliff and we don't even qualify for the CL.
Under Houllier we went from runners up to 5th.With Rafa Benitez from 2nd to 7th.Rodgers looks unlikely to break the cycle.

    ReplyDelete
  39. My guess is that FSG should restructure the scouting/purchasing team. There is something lacking.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sadly I agree with you about Carragher.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Anytime i would have Ray Clement between the post rather than Mignolet

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think Carra was a great servant for the club and was a good defender, not great but good.

However he is no where near ready to be a manager.

He does not have his badges, has never been a coach, I doubt he would be able to attract high profile players and before somebody talks about Kenny, remember what backroom staff he had to help him.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Line keeper. Move on. Nothing to see here.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Whoever had put him among the people that could be next in line for the job is joking.
Omn the other hand, Hyppia who would bring couple of youngsters....

    ReplyDelete
  45. I've made it myself to be fair, but I was a more optimistic man in those days.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yeah, they are not willing to pay the wages that the top players expect.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Carragher not along ago himself said he does not want to be a manager anymore at least not in the short term.

I feel that some of advisory role or part time coaching role for Carragher at the club however would be a good thing. Carragher despite not being blessed with the best physical attributes became an excellent defender though reading the game, positioning and determination, if he could help install that some of the current defenders it could only be a good thing. Even if it was a part time job with the youth setup, i think it would be beneficial as many would look up to Carragher.

  49. This is along way from happening, the top 3 ranked nations in Europe get four places, if you look at the coefficients 2nd placed England is 15 points ahead of 4th placed nation Italy.

The coefficient is based over 5 seasons and England has outscored Italy on the coefficient rankings in all of the last 4 seasons and despite this seasons results in Europe at the moment Italy are only 0.5 points ahead but i can see England overtaking them before the end of this years Champions League and Europa league competitions.

  50. i agree 100%. carra is all about carra whilst the nickkname stevie me doesnt happen by mistake either. This season br has experienced second season syndrome (Usually reserved for players). His scapegoating, arrogance, favouritism and team selections have been attrocious and highlighted a character that is desperate and that will throw his own players under the bus to cover his arse and deceptively affect public opinion. if BR is to have no role at anfield nxt season then he has the basic characteritics to become an effecient member of parliament. I believe in time BR will become a of a backroom staff the samee way Glen Hoddle faded out. He'll be known as a great coach with huge character flaws detrimental to him becoming great manager. He reminds me of Daniel on the apprentice ... deluded.

  51. why on earth gerrard for gods sake he's 34 years old playing 90 mins 3 times a week!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Balotelli out. At least we wont have to see the torture of him playing alone up top this week.

    ReplyDelete
  53. No Gerrard you're kidding right

    ReplyDelete
  54. torture is seeing Johnson at RB Gerrard at DM ;)

    ReplyDelete
  55. our defensive problems from last season persists and is worsening, what's making it worse is the lack of goals

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hence the "at lease". I did not specify the different types of torture.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Rodgers is not a great manager as that would indicate he had actually won something at least once even the championship !! We finished 7 th in his first season completely under achieving given we did not compete in any cups for more than one round and had no Europe. We finished 2nd last year with no Europe or cup run having spent over £100m in 2 transfer windows when other teams were struggling and we had the one of the 3 best strikers in the world leading from the front , dragging Sturridge , Sterling to standards they haven't achieved this season. The other £116 million spent has been wastwd on more mediocre players with no heart or fight as borne out by our woeful displays against average teams in the CL and against bottom and mid table teams in the PL.

Players are too small , not good enough and fundamentally we have not addressed the spine of the team , poor goalkeeper, poor centre halfs, no Gerrard replacement and the most average strike force in the PL. Borini, Balotelli,Lambert, and injury prone Strurridge . BR and the management team are culpable for not signing quality and therefore ending up with a lack of it on the pitch where it counts.

  58. we were willing to pay sanchez a lot more than arsenal but he still did not want to come so there's that too

    ReplyDelete
  59. there is no evidence to suggest that FSG did not help him enough with the transfers. in fact we offered barca more money and a better salary to sanchez but he still chose to join arsenal. we moved ahead of any teams for costa and mkhitaryan but either the team was unwilling to sell or players did wanted to move else where.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Why not just buy a top keeper for a change? I'm sick of all the future stars we've signed. We need to fix things now, not in the future. Come on you reds - Get Cech - YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  61. I don't want Carra because he cannot do the job and because always he seems to have his own atzenta and I don't like that... I was in "Lefski" stadium watching our match against Ludogorets and everybody was dissapointed by the way Rodgers used his bench players. When you have players like Lallana, Coutinho and Emre Can and don't use them to refresh a team screaming for help, then you are clueless and you can't win. Take a look to our fixtures, we have to play 10 games until new year's day, starting from tomorrow and Rodgers cannot rotate his players! A hopeless situation...

    ReplyDelete
  62. There lies the curse of LFC-the inability to kick on from a good season. Common denominator, poor transfers the following season. Then the class players we do have recognise the sinking ship & bailout. Then back to square one! Rodgers is not the man. Too many duds for a meaningful squad to be built. Mourinho's is the only one capable of seeing the gaps and plugging them effectively.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Hence the Dracula coming out of his coffin comment, :)

    ReplyDelete
  64. Is this the same Jones who fell asleep on the bench last week at Palace. ??

    ReplyDelete
  65. Lovren over Skrtel, tell me its a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Dont blame Skrtel for the stupid childish mistakes Lovren makes IN EVERY GAME, Skrtel is keeping us from conceding more ATM.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Funkdoc you put up another quality comment bud.Except for the last sentence.Mourinho is a very good manager but let's not swing from his nuts like the media do.
There are managers we could get that could turn Liverpool back into a decent team.I want Frank De Boer. He'll bring Bergkamp with him and that combination would be able to attract a better standard of player to the club.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I'm desperate for success for LFC, Mourinho seems to bring success & commands respect whilst never putting a player before the club. The way Rodgers does with Gerrard.
Thanks for the feedback though, you're analysis is pretty much on the money. How long would you give Rodgers to turn things round?

    ReplyDelete
  69. If i was FSG, i'd throw Rodgers' stuff out the window and change the locks. My confidence in him and the transfer committee, when it comes to identifying the right players has hit rock bottom. So keeping BR around is pointless.
John Henry must be fuming.Liverpool spending £120m has seen us go backwards.Brendan is on life support and I think JH will pull the plug soon.
December is always a tough month with extra games to play and little recovery time.We have a couple of potentially season defining matches against Arsenal and Man Utd.
However the way Liverpool are playing you can't look too far ahead.I don't even feel confident in us winning against relegation battlers at Anfield.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Spot on! His transfer record leaves a lot to be desired!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I don't think the CL exit would have such a dramatic effect. Could even improve us. Give Rodgers time to work with the players.

    ReplyDelete
  72. How do you mean Liverpool dropped two vital points? What difference would the two points have made?

    ReplyDelete
  73. By what measure exactly is he a great manager...?

    ReplyDelete
  74. Yup fully agreed, Ghost Rider. Sorry, I post as guest so don't get notifications of replies.

Re King Kenny, I still respect him immensely but his first managerial stint was in a different era, and after Rovers his limitations as a manager were exposed.

This is why professional and qualified managers/coaches only should be considered.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Not even. Coaching a team to keep clean sheets against the likes of Real Madrid and, er, Ludogorets while maintaining attacking potency is a responsibility for a qualified and experienced coach with proven tactical and motivational nous. Even if Carragher was Maldini I would think thrice before installing him as Liverpool's defensive coach purely on the basis of his playing career.

  76. Maybe mascherano finally returing too?
