There's no two ways about it: Daniel Sturridge's ongoing injury problems mean that Liverpool desperately need to sign a top-class striker before the end of January, and and the latest name to enter the fray is Inter Milan attacker Mauro Icardi.
According to reports in Italy today, Liverpool are monitoring Icardi, and are planning a massive €35m (£28m) move for the 21-year old striker.
This is not the first time Liverpool have been linked with Icardi:
JULY 2013: The Daily Mail claimed: "Liverpool have enquired about Sampdoria striker Mauro Icardi. The Argentine has also been watched by Tottenham and Manchester City".
AUG 2013: sources in Italy claimed that that the Reds planned to make a €30m offer for the 21-year old striker.
When asked over the weekend about Icardi's future, his agent told reporters:
"If Icardi played in Spain or England, where he is likely to go, he would be a star. He will become one. He has the talent to be the new Ronaldo. You'll see"
Some info about Icardi:
* Spent 3 years at Barcelona before his €400k move to Sampdoria.
* 11 goals/2 assists in 33 apps for Samdoria.
* Last season: 9 goals 2 assists in 23 apps for Inter.
* This season: 12 goals/assists in 15 games.
* 1 appearance for the senior Argentina team.
* Current contract expires in 2018.
* Missed 10 games through injury last season.
* In a recent interview, Icrdi reveals he wants to 'be like Gabriel Batistuta'
Inter Boss Walter Mazzari is convinced that 'perfect' Icardi is destined for great things, but in a recent interview, he sounded a note of caution over the striker's development, and urged him to focus on his game:
"If he [Icardi] can keep this up and get some flaws out of his game, he can be a great player. He has all the characteristics, he just has to focus. Personal things need to be put aside. Footballers are professionals and they mustn't forget that."
If there's any truth to this rumour then, in my view, it's utter madness. €35m on a 21-year old serie A striker? You're having a laugh. In what universe is Icardi better value than Premier League-proven Bony, or the massively experienced Ezequiel Lavezzi?
This deal is not as far-fetched as it sounds. Rodgers' is clearly obsessed with bringing young players into Liverpool's squad, so it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he splurged big bucks on yet another alleged 'star of the future'.
After spending £20m on Lazar Markovic, though, I sincerely doubt that LFC fans will bee too thrilled to see Rodgers spend €35m on a 21-year old. Additionally, after the utter fail in the summer, FSG will probably wary of Rodgers' judgment in the transfer market, and it'll be a huge surprise if the group sanctions such a huge fee for another young player.
Plus, there's the Serie A factor to consider - players from the Italian league never do well for Liverpool, with Fabio Borini being the most recent example. Coutinho is an exception, but his form has also tailed-of over the last year.
For the right price, Icardi is a good option. For €35m? No way.

it wouldn't matter if we had Maradonna up front in a team that leaks goals, fsg would be crazy to back Rodgers with any money as he has shown he is utterly clueless on the transfer front , they would have to be complete idiots to give him any cash after he has blown 200m
ReplyDeleteI get the feeling that Rodgers and the transfer committee think they are smarter than everyone else.
ReplyDeleteIt's like they laugh at other teams who spend 35m on a player, thinking they are getting a better player for half the price. When they are really just getting half the player.
You can forget any new signings in January especially when we will have to pay out Rodgers the remainder of his contract.
ReplyDeleteWhy the hell we signed Lallana is a mystery. We did not need him. Lambert, well he ain't going to win us trophies either. Southampton have benefited big time from our transfer dealings.
ReplyDeletehes clueless on the transfer front even the players he has bought and loaned out cant make there respective teams its gross misconduct for me and in any other industry such negligence would mean sacking without a pay off if he had any self respect he would resign and try and take the crap he has bought with him
ReplyDelete€35 million would be to much for him but he looks a player who and has averaged not far off a goal every other game from the age of 18. That marks him down as a bit special. Your right about Liverpool's record with players from Serie A but there has been some quality strikers make the move successful to the PL Zola, Vialli, Ravanelli to name a few. So it can be done. Oh by the way Mancini is the manager of Inter now.
ReplyDeletebecause his napoleon complex wanted him to play big time charlie....look at me ive got a big cheque book of some one else s money and i dont mind spending it ,the more i think of it the more funny it becomes he has well and truly took fsg for mugs
ReplyDeleteFunny these story's always appear after a good thumping .No good news some make some up?
ReplyDeleteIf we are going to sign a proper striker then go for Lacazette. Has all the traits of a player creating something out of nothing. That is what we need.
ReplyDeleteKid in a candy shop.
ReplyDeleteHERE WE GO AGAIN TRYING TO SIGN AN UN-PROVEN TARGET WHO LAST SEASON WE NEVER EVEN HEARD OF ICARDI INSTEAD OF SPENDING THAT KIND OF MONEY IN JANUARY ON HIM RATHER WE SPEND IT ON PEDRO WHO WOULD COST ATLEAST 22 MILLION POUNDS,SELL BORINI AND LUCAS NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE BAD PLAYERS BECAUSE THEY WONT GET A GAME NO MATTER WHAT AND WITH THAT MONEY FROM THOSE SALES BUY A DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER WHO IS REALLY GOOD IN THAT POSITION AND A NEW KEEPER AND ALSO DOUMBIA WHO IS MUCH CHEAPER THAN ICARDI.
ReplyDeleteALL IN ALL WE WOULD SPEND ATLEAST ANOTHER 50 MILLION POUNDS IN JANUARY AFTER THE SALE OF BORINI AND LUCAS OR EVEN LESS IF WE SELL SLEEPING BEAUTY JONES.
LASTLY BRENDON NEEDS TO GET HIS ACT TOGHETER OR HE WILL BE SACKED.
Ouch, my ears.
ReplyDeleteBony has more premier league goals (17) than any other striker this calendar year.......
ReplyDeleteAre you just ignoring the fact the squad needed more depth. Okay the signing haven't worked out, to date, but we needed to sign players. We brought on a 19 year old left back to play left wing against Chelsea last season due to having no squad depth.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I was stunned when he subbed Lallana and Allen against Palace.
ReplyDeleteThe pair had only given the ball away 5 times between.. clueless is the word I am looking for
Mauro Icardi for €35m? No thanks!
ReplyDeleteBrendan Rodgers and the transfer committee should be put on Crimewatch for wasting money if this happens.
Who the hell would want to sign for us- it seems if you play well you get dropped and our 'dangerous possession' style of play is only dangerous to us cos the more possession we have the more goals we seem to concede
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more with you. We didn't win the league with Suarez and Sturridge up front, scoring goals for fun. We are going to chase now ghosts all over the world and make them overnight millionaires so then can come and have a nice walk around Anfield and live a luxury life in the city of Liverpool.
ReplyDeleteWell, BR and FSG please consider myself a striker and I can walk on pitch and not score goals. And I can do all this on the cheap for 50 grand a week.
but he doent trust the players he has overpayed for to add depth so what is the point of them? he could have had song and diame for peanuts if he wanted depth
ReplyDeleteWe need to buy a proven goal scorer not the next owen
ReplyDeleteIt's not true that Skirtel and Gerrard won none of their tackles made against Palace - how's that
ReplyDeleteFuk off Bony isn't world class
ReplyDeleteYou're coming through loud and clear. But do you see that little knob marked VOL if you could just turn it a couple of times to the left thanks
ReplyDeletewhat that reinforces is the fact that gerrad cant play the position becuase he cant read the game from a defensive standpoint you can run 15m in a game but if you are not in the right position to make an interception its completely futile
ReplyDeleteAgreed... Lallana has played relatively well compared to the other signings. He offered our only real chance at Madrid, and then was subsequently benched for the Chelsea game.
ReplyDeleteHe has it all the way up to 11
ReplyDeletetheres nothing funny about our defending its like watching a car crash
ReplyDeleteYou found it
ReplyDeleteive only watched the highlights but from what i could see lallana and allen seemed to be our best players so rodgers subbed them .........then we fell apart honestly you cant make this stuff up
ReplyDeleteFrom now on I am going to call him F O Bony
ReplyDeleteYup afraid so - Gazza wanted some good news even made up good news and I gave him some
ReplyDeleteIt's actually a fairly common name in the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire
ReplyDeletethe pressure on any striker signing for us will be immense he will have to be a mercenary looking for a big pay day or a sandwich short of a picnic .......hello im mr rodgers could you plaese rescue our season single handed even though we ship goals for fun
ReplyDeleteWhat if we had Maradonna and Shaqiri singing from the same song sheet?
ReplyDeleteBet you grow up tough there
ReplyDeleteas long as its rodgers requiem im okay
ReplyDeleteWe were fans favourite 2nd team last season for our attacking football we still are but only cos we make them laugh
ReplyDeleteHaha esp if he gives them the Ancellotti look
ReplyDeleteLook, Icardi has the potential to be one of the great `Argentine strikers. But I would never buy his shirt. Wouldn't even take one for free. He's absolutely morally bankrupt. Ask Maxi Lopez.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't matter how good he is or how much or little they're wiling to sell for. Steer clear. I would be most disappointed if we pursued his signature.
To be honest I'm not sure how renditions of 'Don't cry for me Argentina' and 'Hips Don't Lie' will benefit us in a defensive sense, but they could boost morale.
ReplyDeleteDefensively, the only hope I can see is if BR is willing to swallow his pride and ask (nay beg) your Nan to come out retirement
ReplyDeleteI know.. I was just stunned when he brought them off.
ReplyDeleteJust goes to show no matter how well you are playing, if you are not one of BR favourites then your **** out of luck
Surely Madonna up front would be more interesting
ReplyDeleteThat amount sounds hight for Icardi, but he is definitely a talent.. It was said earlier this summer that Inter wanted Borini. I know these thinks rarely work out, but perhaps using him as part of the deal, would make it more palatable... If we intend to move forward with a diamond, when all strikers healthy.. Storage, Balotelli, Icardi and Origi (replacing Lambert next season) would be a formidable two deep... two young ones and two in their prime..
ReplyDeleteShe doesn't like being called Shirley
ReplyDeleteWow, excuse the typos... damn iPad!
ReplyDeletesinging like a virgin ..because we dont look like scoring
ReplyDeleteNot another Owen... can I have what your smoking, why the hell would you not want a striker that will score you goals..
ReplyDeleteAs much as I might dislike him he still scored 158 goals in 297 games.
Thats a goal every 1.8 game.. god that would be awful...
Well It's driving us all that way!
ReplyDeleteMorally bankrupt?-tell me more
ReplyDeleteYou must be the most considerate person on the Internet. I would like to sincerely thank you for taking us hard-of-hearing folk into account when posting. Keep doing God's work, my friend, and may you live to be a thousand years old.
ReplyDeleteEh? What was that you say, dear?
ReplyDeleteWe needed depth all over the squad. There were a lot of top teams needing defensive midfielders none of them went for either of those. So Rodgers wasn't alone in overlooking them.
ReplyDeleteits clear he plans his strategies before the game and not during it
ReplyDeleteokay i ve to sub him no matter what at 75th min exactly..this guy has lost it compeletely and if gerrard and skrtel starts the game again than just forget about it..0 tackles in whole game..you are having a laugh..for god sake you are defensive players
Morale bankrupt. He shagged Lopez's wife and ended up marrying her? So what. It happens. They are footballers and not a morale for society. This expecting them to be saints is way over the top. If he joined Liverpool and scored a lot of goals no one would care who he was shagging.
ReplyDeleteThis is the most interesting claim. "they are smarter then everyone else". Smarter then who? Else? Who is else? Who is then the smartest one? Supporters maybe? Participants on this site? Participants from other sites?
ReplyDeleteWho should then Rodgers and Transfer committee ask hich player to buy?
Maybe they should read more forums and buy what on that forum is most popular writing?
I get sick when I read such comments.
even a kid will like to have an expensive quality candy rather than quantity
ReplyDeleteThis is a fact. We needed depth. People don't realise this fact. We qualified for Champions league. Another two cup were on schedule. With the old squad we wouldn't be able to compete.
ReplyDeletemanagers who are improving their first team because thats what wins you trophies..example mourinho
ReplyDeleteWho you think you are to claim Song and Diame wozld be better? And do you think FSG should listen to you ???
ReplyDeletewhy cant i see that depth if a 34 year old player is playing thrice a week
ReplyDelete
