Next LFC Manager? - 'Fantastic' Prem boss now shock 2nd favourite to replace BR

Rafa Benitez, Laurent Blanc, and Jurgen Klopp are the current bookie favourites to replace beleaguered Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers at Anfield, but a new name has entered the fray, and it's the most surprising (and improbable) candidate yet.

According to leading bookmaker Bet Victor, Harry Redknapp is now 8-1 second-favourite to succeed Rodgers at Anfield.

Redknapp is definitely a shock candidate, but this is not the first time he's been linked with the Liverpool job. In 2010, the Reds allegedly pursued him to replace Rafa Benitez, and at the time, Sky Sports reported:

"Liverpool are planning a shock move for Harry Redknapp. The Spurs boss has emerged as a leading contender for the Reds hierarchy as they aim to bring stability back to Merseyside".

In hindsight, Redknapp probably would've been a better option than Roy Hodgson, but whether he'd have lasted any longer is debatable.

As for the possibility of replacing Rodgers - forget it. Jamie Redknapp will undoubtedly approve (!), but I suspect that the majority of Liverpool fans will never accept Redknapp as a long-term option. For a start, like Guus Hiddink, Redknapp is too old; and when it comes to tactical acumen (especially in Europe), it's doubtful that he's a significant upgrade on Rodgers.

Steven Gerrard would probably approve of the deal - after all, when Benitez left, LFC's captain pushed hard for an English manager, with Alan Curbishley reportedly his preferred choice, so it's reasonable to assume that he'd push for Redknapp, too.

One LFC player who'd welcome Redknapp with open arms is Glen Johnson. In a recent interview, Johnson hailed his former boss for 'rescuing' him from Chelsea, and helping his development as a young player. He also slammed reports that Redknapp could be the next Premier League manager to lose his job:

“It’s not nice to see anyone lose their job. He [Redknapp] been a fantastic manager for years and if someone is going to get them [QPR] out of trouble, it will be him. I don’t know what sacking him would achieve.”

I really like Redknapp - he's a straight-talking, down-to-earth, no-BS kind of guy, with great man-management skills, and renowned ability in the transfer market. Ten years ago, he would've been a decent option, but time waits for no man, and Redknapp's time has passed.

Never gets old ;-)

  4. I was not talking about age. Our team needs an experienced manager just to stabilize the club. De Boer will be much better than Redknapp and many others.

  9. Some big names, and they don't come much bigger than Chille Manager. What a guy. How could a player choose to go elsewhere when we have the pulling power of the name of Chille Manager. He looks like an exotic cousin of the Mitchell brothers.

Conte wouldn't come because of Juve, I'd have to assume. He'd be an excellent choice.

I think Klopp, Garcia and Simeone are out of our league or just won't leave.

Deschamps is interesting. I was in favour of him a few years ago. de Boer was my first choice to take over from Kenny.

    I don't think I'd want Blanc.

Also: Rodgers is going nowhere for the time being. Let's get behind him.

  11. Well, how many times did I say BR won't make it till New Years Day? Jurgen Klopp won't come for sure, Laurent Blanc is not the manager to take us to the promised land and we are stuck with the good old Rafa Benitez.

found the name of chille manager

    Jorge Sampaoli

Jorge Sampaoli (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈxorxe sampaˈoli]; born 13 March 1960) is an Argentine football manager, currently coaching the Chile national football team. Sampaoli started out as a youth player and eventually switched to management due to a severe injury. Sampaoli started with an impressive managerial period at Coronel Bolognesi in 2006, and then again with a brief but successful period at O'Higgins and Emelec.

Sampaoli definitively consecrated as a head coach in 2011-2012 with Universidad de Chile, winning three league titles and the Copa Sudamericana championship. This success led him to coach the Chilean men's national team in 2013, replacing the previous coach. He is well known for his attack tactics, similar to those of Marcelo Bielsa according to the press and fans alike.

  14. I definitely wouldn't go for benitez, I would try for Joachim low or unai emery from sevilla, wouldn't get low or Marcelo bielsa, so reckon de Boer would be the best option, but would rather keep Rodgers, or even laudrup

  15. I need to know shoe size

  16. Granted, the majority of the money was from the Suarez sale, but that doesn't mean we had to spend it.

They could just as easily have kept it. They have Rodgers all that money plus the additional 40m to spend, and he's gotten next to nothing for it.

And that's in addition to the other money he's spent since he's been here.

Not sure why they'd trust him when the only real successful transfers he's had are Sturridge and Coutinho. And considering the sheer amount of players he's brought in, that's simply not good enough.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Unfortunately, I feel as though Rodgers has used them up.

  17. While we're at it, what are the odds on Fergie coming to Liverpool?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yeah, I know, but I'm saying even if he was available he wouldn't be interested because of the Juve/Liverpool animosity.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Gotta love the bookies.

Ronald de Boer did mention earlier this year that Frank wants to leave Ajax for the right club. I am pretty sure FSG will be keen on getting him first before another club should Rodgers not pull out a rabbit of the hat.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Totally agree, ferguson had every hack scared stiff of him,and every manager just fawned over the great sir Alex, except one ,Roberto Martinez played ute at old Trafford the following midweek and was the only one to back Rafael, funny how all the press now joke over fergie time etc but never had the balls to say that maybe Benitez had a point at the time, they can all do one ,just give Benitez the chance, day by day week by week and year I feel like our identity is slipping away I actually like redknap as a personality but I want a man with genuine feelings for club ,it's something you can't buy or create ,it's just a pure affection for a club and it's supporters, this is priceless ,and should not be dismissed ,the likes of Kenny and Rafael get the club like no others can cos it's more than a job to them ,

  21. Harry rednapp at LFC are you having a laugh i'd rather keep Rodgers we need Jurgen Klopp a proven world class coach

  23. Two words: transfer committee.

Liverpool's signings aren't made exclusively by Rodgers, the club has taken just about every opportunity to point this out since the committee was installed.

Whilst Rodgers is part of the process, he's just one of three. The buck stops with Rodgers when it comes to results on the pitch, but the club has ensured it does not with regards to signings. If you have an issue with any particular signing (like Markovic above) then thew whole committee is culpable and you can't call for the head of one without also calling for the rest.

With regards to signings, I think a lot of fans have unrealistic expectations. We are not a top club anymore with the pull we used to have and I'm afraid it's been like for the last couple of decades. Liverpool have not signed a player of world class quality in that time, they have signed players with world class potential who have realised it here and used the club as a stepping stone. The best we could manage was players on the cusp, after the last few years we are forced now to shop from the shelf even below that. We have just watched Suarez turn into one of the best players in the world then leave us for a "bigger" club (same as Alonso, same as Mascherano, same as Torres); we can't replace him because we can't attract that type of player, so now we wait for the next prospect to explode and cycle continues.

  26. Think we would be better with dick emery, yes I am old I know, I get the feeling that man utd will be looking for a new guy in May ,the likes of klopp etc might fancy that more.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Klopp has already done a number of interviews stating that he would love to manage in the Premiership and that he is disillusioned with the Bundesliga as no club is able to compete with Bayern due to the Bundesliga current rules regarding expenditure.

    ReplyDelete
  28. How can Markovic show how good he is if he doesn't get a game?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Still having a rough time I see, I myself want Rogers gone, fed up with wasting money , fsg went outside the box first time ,if it happens again in new year will they do same ,no matter what guy comes in ,he will want and deserve some kind of backing ,we have no chance of shifting this lot that br bought, look at borini, seems like an ok lad but do you think he is here cos he loves the club so much that he wants to stay or could it be the 70k per week he is on ,Sunderland offered him only 35k per week, how very dare they,,

  30. I dont think we should go for a flavour of the month. Ronald Koeman and Brian Laudrup were far from being anyones favourites to be a hit but they were. They know the European market well and signed well given the circumstances. My vote would go towards Frank Rijkaard all day long. He'd be a nugget similar to Koeman and Laudrap. His name is no longer up in lights but he would revolutionise us and more importantly understand how to identify and use quality players.

    ReplyDelete
  31. stop the vote, stop empty talk, and just stick with your Club.

  32. shankly rising from the grave to manage LFC would be a better bet

  33. forget benitez the players we have and the style were trying to play does not fit in with rafa s and we should move forward not back

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anyone over Rodgers!

  35. How about Mike Basset?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Could you please tell me what style we are playing ? Ok you don't want Benitez, and would our current style be more acceptable to the likes of klopp etc,get real, from the outside looking in how much would a new manager want to do things his way,he won't raise money from sales cos nobody will pay what we did for the majority and they certainly won't pay the same wages ,so on most we might break even after the pay off

    ReplyDelete
  37. Bertie Bassett could sign better players for less money

    ReplyDelete
  38. I doubt Benitez will be on FSG's mind anyway. They have already found out that bringing back the past (KD) is not the way forward.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I just want to see results start improving as well as the dreadful football we have been playing.

Let's see what happens this weekend.

  49. That's a myth. It really all depends on the quality of manager. There isn't some kind of magical spirit that stunts the ability of any manager in his second term at a club. The proof of that is Jose Mourinho. He's successful back where he is now because not only does he love Chelsea, but he's also very good at what he does. Rafa Benitez loves everything about Liverpool, and is also pretty damn good IMO. Kenny Dalglish failed because he only satisfied half of the criteria. It was clear that the game had well and truly passed him by.

i will hire asprilla as director of football

  51. I wouldn't mind either. He's from Ajax, so he's got very good technical knowledge about the game, and can feed that off into our academy.

    ReplyDelete
  52. If not Benitez, then certainly Simeone for me .... But integrating so many signings into a team and try to replace the level of output Suarez did last season was always going to be nigh on impossible, especially when buying 'potential'. Also Suarez's never give up attitude and appetite for the game was no doubt a morale booster and was infectious throughout the squad and the fans and raised everyone's game. Chelsea bought fabregas and Costa. We bought Origi and Can. Just for one example. Sometimes you have to buy the players at their peak or thereabouts. we missed out on a few recently - Costa, mikhytarian (I know that's spelt wrong!), Willian, konoplyanka etc and I guess we went down the plan b signings and hoped they'd all hit the ground running- which they'd have to have done to replicate last season. I don't think we could realistically expect much different to why we are seeing. Balotelli is not a lone striker and certainly doesn't fit the system/style we played last season . Probably a panick signing and a punt to appease the fans? To be honest we are still not that far off top 4. Need to start performing fast though....

  53. Frank rijkaard/ Diego simeone

    ReplyDelete
  54. OK, I take it back, I DID side-step the point. I side-stepped your point, or rather you think I did because I didn't address it. I chose not to because it's not really worth arguing. Fans who expect Rodgers to have spent 20 million pounds on a more effective player are not being unreasonable. That's fine.

I made a different point that is related to that: fans that expect Markovic himself to be a different player simply because of his price tag are ignorant. They are ignorant of his actual capacity as a player at this point in time and, because of that ignorance, they use limited information (his price) to determine how well they think he should be playing. Were they to gather more information about him they would realise their error and adjust their expectation accordingly. They would then probably change their argument to be the one above that I kind of (but not really) agree with.
