'The madness is finished': £14m star explains why he rejected deadline-day transfer

Last week, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers urged unwanted striker Fabio Borini to quit Anfield, but despite the humiliation of being publicly warned that he's surplus to requirements, Borini (once again) resisted a move away, and he has absolutely no regrets for digging his heels in and resisting a deadline-day move away.

Over the last month, Liverpool accepted offers from both Sunderland (£14m), and QPR (£10m), but Borini rejected both transfers, and is seemingly determined to stay and fight for his place.

Explaining his decision to stay at Liverpool, the Italian striker explained:

"Finally, the madness is finished! I protected the MAN and the player that I am today, taking all the responsibility of the situation and for people who didn't want it, and I'm VERY happy with myself to have taken such an important decision"

To be fair, Borini's stubborn refusal to give up on his dream is admirable, and in a game where money talks, and mercenaries (i.e. Falcao) change 'loyalties' like the weather, it's a refreshing change to see this kind of 'fight for the shirt' attitude.

I've always been ambivalent on the Borini issue. If he'd left, then fine, but I don't see any real problem with him staying, and his stats at Sunderland last season suggest that the he could be decent squad player:

* 7 goals/2 assists in 32 apps.
* Goal ever 4.5 games.
* Shooting accuracy: 36%
* Passing accuracy: 75%
* Key passes: 14
* Crossing accuracy: 20%
* Successul dribbles: 16
* Tackles: 15
* Interceptions: 19

Stats: OPTA

In theory, after another year of Premier League experience, Borini should be more equipped to make an impact for LFC, and I'm sure Brendan Rodgers will give him chances to prove himself over the next nine months.

Ultimately, Borini will add further depth to the squad, a striking quartet of Sturridge, Balotelli, Lambert, and Borini provides plenty of options for the challenges ahead.

  1. I am not sure what to make of his statement. It is not clear to me that he is necessarily saying he wants to stay to fight for his place.

I would want to see a clearer statement than this to be convinced of his motives in turning down two offers and I\ cannot understand why he has not even gone somewhere on loan. BR has made it pretty clear the he does not have a future at Liverpool.

  2. I am glad he's staying. He can score goals and has demonstrated such. We have LC and FA Cup matches to play. Let him have a crack with our talented MF feeding him and I'm sure he'll prove his worth.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Good for Him! I know a lot of fans want him out, but if he's willing to stay and fight, I see no reason why he shouldn't be able to.

He's taken responsibility for his decision to join Liverpool, and is willing to prove why it was the right one. He signed a contract, and he isn't about to bail when things don't go his way. He might not get much playing time, but imo if he wants a chance I don't see why we wouldn't let him prove himself.

  4. Apparently he wanted 90k a week from Qpr , I'm sure if he got it he would of been out the door so really i don't know what this guys game is. All the same I'd like to see him do well this year.. If he gets the chance

    ReplyDelete
  5. Agreed, he'll be used in domestic cup games along with Lambert in the early rounds but beyond that just can not see him breaking into matchday squads for prem league/champs league. Just goes to show how many attacking options/formations we have now, keeps everyone on their toes. On a separate note, how refreshing to be relaxed on deadline day knowing all our business was done and watching other teams panic to get deals done.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Maybe he was hoping the Henandez bench warming deal at Real would fall through giving him a chance...only joking. Am sure he wants to play football at a top european club and I think one of the top Italian teams will come in for him in Jan.

  7. C1C and FA cup games this season could we see
    Borini Lambert
    Suso
    Coutinho Lallana
    Can
    Enrique Skrtel Toure Flanagan
    Valdes*/Jones

*Valdes is a free agent and can join any time

I'm not going to lie but I think we have a squad stronger and more balanced than United and the fact that Lucas and Johnson would not make either squad shows the depth we have

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'm with you on that. If he had no intention of leaving, why not just say so to QPR rather than try to stiff them for £90,000 a week - a figure which per WEEK is more than 3 times the average ANNUAL wage in this country. I think this young man has an over inflated opinion of himself and his ability and is probably astonished that no big Italian club offered a fortune for his services. I doubt if BR will play him at all if only "por encourager les autres" - in other words when I tell you there is no future for you at Anfield, I well and truly mean it!

  9. He has the knack of scoring in big games. Who knows, he might be the one to score the all important Champion's league goal for us..Last season he almost won the title for us with sunderland. With Balotelli in the side, for me he is ahead of Lambert in the pecking order and we would not have bought anyone even if he is sold and we need 4 strikers to compete on all fronts . At the end of the day we have a player coming from the bench who is hungry and determined to prove he belongs here.. That itself is fine for me..Hendo Mk2

  10. Does anyone remember deadline day 2013, Fulham having sold Dembele to Spurs during the summer needed a replacement and Liverpool offered a certain #14 to get Clint Dempsey, the deal fell through Dempsey moved to Spurs and Henderson became that catalyst to Liverpool's return to the Champions League.
Or maybe I have too much hope on Borini

    ReplyDelete
  11. I see it that Borini is happy to sit on his backside and collect hoping that his dodgy legs will last longer he has no dream to succeed at Liverpool more like Juventus or such.
He in my books is a mercenary in his own right asking for way more than hes worth to accept moves away knowing he will have to play.

The kid's got bottle and has full confidence in his abilities. Let us be responsible fans and see if he has what it takes. If he finally fulfills his potential at the club all the haters would join the bandwagon. Good to see youngsters like him and suso fight it out.
    All the best Fabio

  13. In other news with 2 loans to Stoke City Liverpool have made back the money they paid for Assaidi

    ReplyDelete
  14. Slimey person I knew he was taking Liverpool for a ride - he is a horrible useless Aquilani mark two. Brendon please give the fans the chance to boo him out of Anfield. make him a sub.

    ReplyDelete
  15. It has absolutely nothing to do with fighting for his place - it is bloody mindedness, when he was substitute in America he actually nudged the guy with his shoulder taking his place and had a gob on him.

    ReplyDelete
  16. You are no better than Arsenal fans who at some point had a vendetta against Aaron Ramsey

    ReplyDelete
  17. You are not worth taking notice of - comparing the great Ramsey with the useless Borini.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 'the great Ramsey'

    ReplyDelete
  19. He has a chip on shoulder - end of. Te4xiera who wnet out on loan is ten times better than him.

    ReplyDelete
  20. All I'm saying is the circumstances are similar

    ReplyDelete
  21. God that seems a while ago now...

    ReplyDelete
  22. What...on Earth does this mean? In English please.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I hope you're right. God help us if we have to play Sturridge against some League 1 team and he pulls a hamstring or something.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I would love something like that but I think those stories are few and far between. Fair play to Jordan he has come along a great deal.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I am afraid what we are seeing here is a long process of Borini eventually leaving on a Bosman. At the next window he will be 12 months from being able to look for a club and a sizable signing on fee. He asked for wages at QPR he knew they would never agree to. LFC I believe are aware of this by refusing any loan deal which would have suited Borini by remaining a Liverpool employee. In the meantime he collects his wages and has a negative effect on any dressing room he finds himself in at Anfield.

    ReplyDelete
  26. We certainly have some penalty takers now.

I am not sure he will make many benches but he should get some cup games.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It is not about how good they are, it is fan's reaction to players.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well done Liverpool fc for not giving in to a mercenary who wanted to run his contract down on loan ensuring he gets all he benefit - his pathetic tweet is the result of seething resentment.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Except Lallana will be rested in cup games if he proves he is what BR thinks he is.

    ReplyDelete
  30. yes the very great Ramsey a wonderful footballer.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Agreed i can see Lallana taking Allen's place in the first 11 once hes match fit. the sooner the better IMO

    ReplyDelete
  32. And people who didn't want it- what does he mean by that?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Absolutely correct. I remember Rafa had a similar problem with Salif Diao. Borini also blocks up younger players like Yesil and Jerome Sinclair

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi they are not really similar - did Ramsey refs two good offers of a club ? h wanted another loan to run down his contract so that he get the bi bucks not LFC but the club was wise to it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hard to say what the agents influence is though (just for balance). I mean the convo may have gone like this

Agent " QPR want to sign you and Liverpool are willing to sell"

B "I don't want to go to a club like that I would rather fight for my place"

A " how about for £60k? much more than you are getting here"

B "I want to play in Champions league and fight for the league"

A "£75, nice life in London?"

B "That does sound good but I still think I am better staying put"

A " Liverpool said you won't play much and are willing to sell. What if I ask for £90k? You have a nice life in London, play well and try and get a move to a better club next season?"

B "alright but anything less and I would rather stay. Arry is a bell end."

Hypothetical but I almost talked myself out of staying at Liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Him and Hendo might solve the problem of Steven being last man before defence and leave him space to make magic. We miss Lallana more than we know..

    ReplyDelete
  37. Good one... Don't have nerves for making b story, but that would be fun too..

    ReplyDelete
  38. it means if someone has not got the intelligence to read between the lines they should not reply by asking the obvious.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I can't work it out. Does someone else usually make his decisions?

    ReplyDelete
  40. My apologies A gob on him means "he was not pleased" in scouse.

    ReplyDelete
  41. 7 Goals last season, useless!!! how many of them where penalties!?! he is complete dross, we never should have signed him in the first place and now we're stuck with the arrogant little prick. he wants Milan or Inter lol dream on hes delusional!!! Sunderland or QPR is his level, he needs to accept that and do one :/

    ReplyDelete
  42. I concur again, where Allen gives us basically nothing, Lallana is a genuine goal threat and has a great final ball. shud bring a nice balance to midfield IMO

    ReplyDelete
  43. He does not care what happens with his Liverpool career and asked for unrealistic money to go elsewhere dont kid yourself he is a slime and unlike some that have fought it out clearly not good enough.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wasn't he in Nacho Libre?

    ReplyDelete
  45. It still leaves with The Question- and what do we do without Stevie? Hendo is wasted back there and Can so far... That dive vs City is hard to forget unlike his overall play..

    ReplyDelete
  46. And people who didn't want it- what does he mean by that?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Jamie . In an unrelated note , you have great influence over Liverpool fans and I was wondering if it could possibly be put to use for good. I noticed that after more than a year of putting in top drawer performances Daniel Sturridge still doesn't have a song . I'm a tad bemused by that because Suarez got one almost immediately and Balotelli was serenaded on his debut . Is it possible that you could give the fans a little nudge ? #songforsturridge.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I gather that means people who want him to leave.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yes Jaimie use the site for good instead of evil.

Deserves a song. Personally I think his performance over the weekend was underrated. I thought he looked fantastic.

    ReplyDelete
  50. id still hav Stevie in the team for his on-field experience and set piece delivery alone. But id use him like Utd used to use Giggs i.e not in f.a & league cup games and id play him for 60 mins tops in any games he starts because he just doesn't have the legs anymore. Can needs developing but at least we have the option of him and Allen to come on and close out games. Really we're crying out for a top-class DMF specialist but c'est la vie they didnt peruse one for some unknown reason. Song from Barca looked like a no-brainer to me :/

    ReplyDelete
  51. Chuckling at that first sentence

    ReplyDelete
  52. Dont think its more likely BR advised him to leave

    ReplyDelete
  53. Diame seemed like a perfect fit to me. The problem is that we can only buy a top DM when Stevie retires, because nobody who is good would wait for Stevie to want to be rested...

    ReplyDelete
  54. He does, you don't even know it..

    ReplyDelete
  55. Why did the Euro-Song episode of Father Ted just come into my head?

Borini always gives 100% on the pitch he can do that in training

you never know he might surprise people
he is only 23 and that goal vs city was very good

    ReplyDelete
  60. Stevie is more the quarter back role, hes never a DMF he doesnt hav the discipline or energy for it. The way Juventus use Pirlo, Vidal and Pogba looks to me to be a blend and balance we should be trying to emulate. Against teams out of the top- 5 or 6 i dont think we need a DMF, but esp in away games against the likes of Chelski, City etc i think we need that protection from midfield and should look to use the incredible pace we have on the counter.

we can sign him as our marquee player next year

    ReplyDelete
  64. Yes, Juve nailed it- hope we can do the same wizh our triangle...

    ReplyDelete
  65. No because Arsene wanted him at all costs, the Arsenal fans wanted him to take the next trip out of London and they were booing him

    ReplyDelete
  66. ave us a penalty vs Spurs

    ReplyDelete
  67. Really what are the words for Ballotelli song? It looks silly we are already have one for him...

    ReplyDelete

care to explain the first three paragraphs in this article then? http://www.liverpool-kop.com/2013/02/fabio-borini-destined-for-failure-at-liverpool-fc.html

    ReplyDelete
  77. Allen was quite good against Spurs. We just need to choose our squad selectively for every game. Against less physical teams Allen can do a decent job. Against teams that require both hard work and technique Lallana comes into frame

    ReplyDelete
  78. Wasn't a dive for me

    ReplyDelete
  79. If you think Borini is same as Henderson your mistaken. Henderson is not about money

    ReplyDelete
  80. You say Borini should be praised for his decision in a game where money talks but you forget that the moves to Sunderland and QPR didn't finalise because...he was asking too much money !

    ReplyDelete
  84. can you please advise why my post that pointed out a contradiction in your articles was deleted?

    ReplyDelete
  85. Agree. JK seems to have assumed the player has the best intentions which on the face of it seems contrary to a critically realistic view. But then I suppose it has given us a chance to sound off about it:-)

    ReplyDelete
  86. There are some good players there too:-)

    ReplyDelete
  87. Yeah and he speaks of his "loyalty" like it was Real Madrid who came in for him ! All we know right now is that Borini is happy to sit and collect his wages instead of playing football, which is supposed to be his job.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I recall he wanted us to sign Ben Arfa too... I guess Hull City will finish above us then :-)
As for Capoue, I think we all saw on sunday (and the whole of last season) why we aren't in for him.

    ReplyDelete
  97. You are blind Jamie if u think Borini stayed for Footballing reasons! He stayed for his paycheck as was stated by Redknapp they couldnt agree terms. He is just like the Falcaos of this world. Useless player hopefully next window we ship him out.

    ReplyDelete
  98. MESSAGE TO BORINI - SACK U R AGENT TODAY AND LFC WILL NEVER LOAN YOU TO AN ITALIAN CLUB WHILE YOU LIVE NOW - P S Sunderland fans want to send their regards as well as those of Q P R -You should apologise to Gus Poyet publically for being such a spoiled little child

    ReplyDelete
  99. Yes but unfortunately he is not a real person

    ReplyDelete
  100. Anthony Montague has it right further on in this thread. Borini wanted to go on loan to Milan and Liverpool wanted to sell him. Borini therefore asked for excessive wages to avoid a transfer and force through the loan he wanted.

Neither side was prepared to give way so we now have a disgruntled player who probably won't get played much if at all -lose/lose and no one comes out of it looking good.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Spirit of the Shadows4:48 pm, September 02, 2014

Maybe I am wrong but what is the point in booing one of our own players just because he didn't want to leave

    ReplyDelete
  102. The best what? Represented player by super agent Jorge Mendez? Best at getting knee ligament damage and not really playing any games since yet getting paid obscene amounts of money by a team in decline? Best at looking like Carlos Tevez's slightly better looking brother?

Are we signing valdes? Isn't he injured?

    ReplyDelete
  104. I made this up in the boozer to take the p**s out of a manc citeh fan ....to the tune of Bony M, hooray hooray it's a holiday.....
Mario, Mario, he's always on me telly. when he gets the ball he thrills us all, super Mario Balotelli...Mario, Mario, he's always on me telly, scores for the Kop, to reach the top, super Mario Balotelli

    ReplyDelete
  105. It meant no one else wanted the responsibility. People took responsibility but it didn't agree with his definition. We need a 4th striker and it would have been waaaaay better if was Bony but Borini as choice #4 is not the worst position we have been in over the last 6-7 years...............

    ReplyDelete
  106. I'm all for him dancing on the pitch, f1ck it if he scores he can get his fella out.

    ReplyDelete
  107. The high wage demands were just a tactic to force a loan or nothing at all........So he's a distant #4 option. With the big schedule, he will get games, just not top flight competition for most of his opportunities. I will give him a few points for doing what he can to fight for the job. Hope his attitude when called is as admirable as he is positioning it to be.............

    ReplyDelete
  108. he is recovering from knee surgery, so i'd say we are waiting to do a medical when he has fully recovered.....and then probably say "nah Jones will do"

    ReplyDelete
  109. He will always be Falcoa for me now.

    ReplyDelete
  110. your article is way off base JK borini has stayed because of money and nothing else....oh how rogers must regret signing this midtable palyer who wants galactico wages.Im amazed other clubs want to sign him because he is a powder puff attacker with the strength of a nine year old girl.Id wish him well at Liverpool but thats like wanting a dodo to fly its pointless because he doesn't have the ability coupled with extinct talent. I watched him last season and he was at very best an average player in a bottom 3 club.

    ReplyDelete
  111. or it gets swatted

    ReplyDelete
  115. What happened with interest in Romero ? Presumably Manure didn't get him

    ReplyDelete
  116. Maybe Borini just did not want to make a permanent move to two teams, Sunderland and QPR, who will arguably be part of the relegation scrap this season. If anything I see Borini back in Italy by January or the following window.

    ReplyDelete
  117. It is the posh way of saying his surname.

    ReplyDelete
  118. It's the same as Borini's song with Fabio substituted for Mario magnifico Mario fantastico

    ReplyDelete
  119. Make sure you always use all caps otherwise we'll miss the humor and think you've jumped on the bandwagon.

    ReplyDelete
  120. There is no humour my friend. I'm riding Ray's bandwagon all the way to hell, or Manchester, whichever we get to first.

    ReplyDelete
  121. When i watch Fabio Borini in a Liverpool shirt i hardly notice he's on the pitch. He works hard but doesn't have enough quality. At clubs like Sunderland or QPR players can get away with being average and showing nothing but work rate with a few glimpses of class throughout the season.
When you play for Liverpool Football Club the spotlight is on and you need to display quality on a regular basis.Your game is scrutinized by everyone.
Can somebody point out some matches Borini has played in a red shirt where he's looked like one of the best 3 players on the pitch? You can even include pre season friendlies against very weak teams to help. The truth is he goes missing.

    ReplyDelete
  122. You can't possibly know that

    ReplyDelete
  123. October apparently

    ReplyDelete
  124. To be fair, before his injury he was an animal, pity I'm gonna have to hate him now.

    ReplyDelete
  125. the guys got delusions of grandeur i cant believe two clubs like Sunderland and and QPR are interseted ,,,,may be im missing something watching him play but he looks like a lower league player...plenty of effort when it suits him but absolutely no quality in the final 3rd

    ReplyDelete
  126. I REPEAT SACK YOUR INEPT USELESS AGENT TOMOTTOW BORINI

    ReplyDelete
  127. Maybe he now knows TOMOTTOW never comes

    ReplyDelete
  128. How about that guy Ulloa? He has come out of nowhere and has scored some great goals. Did last year too...in the Championship...23 for Brighton in 50 appearances. He has scored 2 already for Leicester one v Everton and the poitn clincher v Arsenal this weekend. He makes Jordan Rhodes believeable in the PL I think.

    ReplyDelete
  129. The overwhelming factor was obviously greed. QPR and Sunderland were not willing to match his ridiculous wage demands neither were Barcelona or Real Madrid interested in signing him. Despite knowing he won't be playing much he's happy to take the money whilst sitting on the bench. I don't blame him really as most people in his position would do the same. Brendan is the only one to blame over this issue.

    ReplyDelete
  130. lol..he's not staying and fighting for his place, he's staying because QPR would go nowhere near his enormous wage demands. Admirable? Not much.

    ReplyDelete
  131. He has a shot on him....that's about it. No ability to read the game and needs to bulk up. Someone needs to be giving him that feedback in black and white. Stop being a headless chicken and overexcited. Put some weight on and concentrate on what's going on around you.

    ReplyDelete
  132. You know I kinda like that. Catchy, happy...and over...quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Nah but he knows guy called Nacho Monreal...

    ReplyDelete
  134. I kinda feel like bidding for Juan Mata in the January window...just for the sake of having him in the team...

    ReplyDelete
  135. I always wanted him at Liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Goals scored by Ulloa are not really that impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Diame had a buyout clause of 3-4mn.

    ReplyDelete
  138. You are being too biased. He is quite a decent striker and scored important goals for Sunderland which helped them stay in EPL. I think he can be a good player for a quality team, if given a good run of games.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Man, I just read Dagger's statement upon his unveiling at Brondby. What a human being! I have nothing but respect for him, he is Liverpool through and through. People like Dagger are very rare in football or even in social life these days and I think Liverpool was blessed with a player like him. Class!!!

    ReplyDelete
