Next Signing? BR wants 'world class' £7m-a-year star who 'forgot how to play football'

Welcome to the Transfer Twilight Zone! Liverpool's increasingly protracted search for a new striker has hit a new nadir today with the worrying news that Brendan Rodgers is considering a move for ex-Chelsea striker Samuel Eto'o.

According to The Telegraph this evening:

"Liverpool are considering a move for veteran Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o.

"LFC have not made an offer as yet, but Eto’o has emerged as a possible target"

With the greatest respect to Rodgers, this is an absolute joke scenario:

* In a Champions League year, it's just ridiculous that Liverpool are struggling to sign a half-decent striker. The Loic Remy deal failed, but where are the other targets? Rodgers and his alleged scouting team should have a list of 10+ viable options, not - as seems to be the case - just one or two.

* It was obvious that Suarez would leave this summer, and Rodgers has had a whole year to prepare for that eventuality. Yet, with less than a week to go before the new season begins, the best the club can come up with is a 33-year old mercenary whose best years are well in the past.

* Liverpool have an extensive scouting infrastructure in place, and even head-hunted a couple of Man City scouts to lead the team. What are they doing, exactly? From where I'm standing, the scouting team is doing a pretty poor job if it's unable to come up with a list of viable targets.

* The club has £75m from the Luis Suarez sale available, so even if Wilfried Bony is considered expensive, just pay the money already. The Ivorian is clearly a target, so that means Rodgers rates him, and he's proven over the last year that he's a top class Premier League striker. That said, if Fabio Borini is worth £14m, how is £19m for Bony - an infinitely more effective striker - considered 'expensive'?

* Additionally, what is the point in bringing in 33-year old Eto'o when Liverpool already have 32-year old Rickie Lambert? Yes, Eto'o has Champions League experience, but if Sturridge gets injured, he and Lambert are just not going to cut it.

Ajax are also interested in Eto'o - who reportedly earner £7m for his year at Chelsea - and when asked about the striker over the weekend, sporting director Marc Overmars told reporters:

“Samuel seemed very hungry to play for Ajax. He is fit and has a great drive to succeed once again. If it is possible to sign a world class player like Eto’o, then why not? It will be fantastic.”

World class? Five years ago, maybe, but not anymore. Anfield legend Jan Molby is not a fan of Eto'o, and in a column for Eurosport last season, he scathed:

"If I was in charge at Chelsea I wouldn’t have bought Samuel Eto’o. He went to Russia for one reason: money. And in that time he forgot how to play football"

Perhaps I'm being too harsh on Eto'o - it's not his fault if Liverpool are interested, but if Rodgers ends up signing the Cameroon international, then it will be the biggest transfer farce since, well, Iago Aspas. Or Victor Moses. Or Luis Alberto.

Imagine: from Luis Suarez to Samuel Eto'o and Rickie Lambert in the space of two months. It's literally a case of going from the sublime to the utterly ridiculous.

Be afraid. Be very afraid...

  1. Not to mention that, at 58, he's way too old to be playing top flight football. This is one of those stories that I sincerely hope with every fibre of my being is just unfounded media guff. I've only just recovered psychologically from the prospect of signing Ryan Bertrand, and now this happens.

    ReplyDelete
  2. With the greatest of respects... The available strikers in the market is unbelievably slim, not a single name comes to mind where I think 'Yeah, he's available and reasonable'. Overpay for a striker this window, or sign a free agent with a great pedigree for a season, who I would suggest is going to score goals if given a chance in a free-flowing side? I'm not saying he's going to score 20 goals, but he's certainly got the ability to plug a gap..

    ReplyDelete
  3. Footnote, I find it unlikely that we'll actually sign him- I'm simply playing devils advocate on the matter!

  4. Please let this one be a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Come on, Joe. There are literally hundreds of strikers in world football. Are we to believe that there's such a lack of availability that LFC have to resort to two 30+ players in one transfer window?

Rodgers and his transfer team have had a whole year to source strikers, and they've failed.

    ReplyDelete
  6. What a dreadful article. Quality would be much better than quantity Mr K.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Which strikers do you perceive are available, would be interested in coming to Liverpool, aren't overpriced and could provide a consistent output that would justify spending a large fee on? The market seems rather small to me, I for one am absolutely devastated that the Loic Remy deal fell through.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I was also gutted for Remy deal, but rumoured to have increased wage demands and agent fee after verbally agreeing lower demands.

Also, Bony is supposed to be demanding £100k per week.

Is it not a little convenient that reputable newspapers are all leaked the Eto'o story at the same time?

I think we are trying to force Bony or someone else to reduce wage demands.

But having said that, Eto'o would be solid backup for us. He is still relatively mobile etc

  9. Origi will be with us at the start of next season.

i swear this better be a fucking joke. talk about scraping the barrel!

    ReplyDelete
  11. You'll be even more devastated then if the rumours of Mourinho wanting Remy at Chelsea turn out to be accurate. I'm afraid sniffing around Eto'o at this late stage of the window smacks of inadequate planning, and ultimately of desperation.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Define failure and success.......

Would (totally hypothetical) Jackson Martinez for €35 million and €120k per week on a 5 year deal..... Total outlay of €70 million be deemed a success?

Everyone needs to breathe and relax, cut out the hyperbole.

We can't overpay someone like Bony. Come in on lower wages, a la Suarez on initial £40k, and EARN your increase

    ReplyDelete
  13. Here are some of my interpretations on the transfers mentioned above.....

Aspas - signed in advance of a feared Suarez departure, so that we wouldn't be held to ransom over the kings ransom we'd have earned. It was merely "insurance" and we got a discount policy

Alberto - disappointing overall outcome. I guess we don't know if there was personal issues etc. pity we didn't try before we bought, which leads on to

Moses and Manquillo - what's wrong with trying before buying? Sure was worth it with Moses

    ReplyDelete
  14. May well be the truth mate.. I was just commenting on the potential upsides of him being a Liverpool player haha!

    ReplyDelete
  15. For once Jaimie I agree with you. Chelsea let Eto'o go for a reason: he's not the player he was. To my mind 19 million doesn't seem excessive for Bony given that he is a proven Premier League scorer who is just coming into his peak. I think the signing of Lambert as a cheap back-up was a shrewd piece of business but we still need someone of a similar level to Sturridge to face the heavy fixture list ahead. Bony would fill that role. Rather than signing Eto'o on huge wages I'd rather see Suso converted into a centre-forward: I think he could fill that role and his natural positions in attacking midfield or wide right seem to be well occupied. But obviously rather than that scenario I'd ratehr just sign Bony.

    ReplyDelete
  16. To me its like the club in a third party way release infomation that liverpool are interested in the likes of ETO and other bottom of the barrell players so that when we actually get some1 like BONY etc who are not exactly a world beaters we are all ecstatic, with relief in my opinion ..
and every1 forgets that we should be trying to get world class replacement for suarez here

    ReplyDelete
  17. @Simon "Relatively mobile"....sums it up. How exactly is he a solid back up? Struggled for game time against the current Torres!! How much do you think Eto'o will want a week...? @Joe Thomas, you lack imagination if this news doesn't bother you and you think it a reasonable option. Bony; going back for Remy; all out for Reus; Luis Muriel; Jackson Martinez; throwing some money at RM for Jese Rodriguez; Vidal to allow Sterling and Coutinho to push up; even Balotelli or Huntelaar would be miles better long shots that're worth paying the kind of wages Eto'o will be after, and represent far better value for money. Christ - Borini and Lambert would be above him in the pecking order. Not that I'm dissing either, but that's not what we're after.

    ReplyDelete
  18. This is obviously BS. We already have a set of tired creaky legs in a bench warming striker...why would we want another one when there are younger better strikers available?

    ReplyDelete
  19. They haven't failed unless there isn't a signing by midnight 31 August.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's beyond a joke if we end up with Eto and Lambert as our back up strikers, with Sturridge's injury record I'm starting to worry about our prospects for the current season in a big way. The striker position should of been a priority from day one of this transfer window..joke of this comes to fruition

  21. Nicholas Reifsnyder12:47 am, August 12, 2014

Bony is an absolute beast, he wants to play for Liverpool, and (most importantly) he can beat the big man in the back who's allowed to use his hands. If this is truly a Champions League squad, then we need another proven goal-scorer. If we sign him, I can say with full confidence that we will be a top 4 team again this year. Without him, we are completely reliant on Sturridge, and if Sturridge gets hurt, we simply aren't as good as the top teams in the league.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Agree with what your saying for the most part, except bony wouldn't really fit our style especially as he and Lambert are similar. Remy would of been perfect, something stinks regarding the reason that deal broke down, reckon it depended on Borini leaving which didn't happen

    ReplyDelete
  23. Just ignore everything I said except last three words???!!!!

Bony = £19 million + prematurely exorbitant £100k per week over probable 5 years = £45 million investment

Leak an Eto'o story, Bony maybe realises he can "settle" for £70k, which he can improve on IFF he performs

    Suarez started on £40k p/w

We are protecting ourselves from front loaded deals, that we cannot escape from if player swans about, like Babel

And, yes, I do think that Eto'o would score for fun if DS were injured, but I don't think this is real. We are smoking another target out, in my opinion

    ReplyDelete
  24. what about kevin volland .. young ,reasonably cheap and class

    ReplyDelete
  25. Another Toure type! We were all naive to think just because you made to CL means everybody wants to play for you. Money talk these days. All the big time strikers wants more money. Now if we do what we did last season and finish in quarterfinals or semis then they will have a change of mind.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I've been banging on about Bony for months. 20 odd million seems fairly reasonable to me given that he cost Swansea 12 million or so and he had an excellent first season. Proven PL pedigree, he's consistent, works bloody hard, has a good touch, hardly ever gets injured and is young enough to want to improve and learn.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The club would have made an enquiry. The thing about Eto'o is that as a free agent any manager can talk to him and check out his state of mind. No harm in having a chat with the guy, seeing if he'd be interested, seeing if he has the right mental attitude for the game. Who knows about the legitimacy of Overmars' comments but the words "hungry", "fit" and "drive to succeed" are buzz words for Rodgers.

I agree, if Liverpool can't find a decent first team striker with the money at their disposal then something is wrong. If the price for Bony is right and Rodgers wants him then I think they just need to get the deal done. Maybe he's not the absolute ideal player but if we're at the point of scratching around for free agents like Eto'o then surely Bony is a better option. We should always aim high, try to get the absolute best players we can, but at some point the club has to be willing to compromise a little and take a player who is none the less still of good quality. 15 goals in a season for a struggling team is not to sniffed at.

But as for Eto'o ... if he was in peak fitness, willing to come for a modest salary, showed a clear hunger and desire to work in the team structure and illustrated to Rodgers that he otherwise had the right mental attitude then I think he's at least worth a look. He'd not be guaranteed a lot of playing time so he'd need to be OK with that. If he was given that scenario and said "yes, I want to come to Liverpool and work hard" then you'd probably have to consider it. What I suspect is that he wouldn't.

  28. Give it time, in the days to come we'll find it's all media nonsense IMO. Everyday we're linked with another name, this mercenary doesn't fit the profile of what we're now about !

    ReplyDelete
  29. I read reports that when West Ham made an approach 2 weeks ago for Eto'o, he was looking for £200k a week, needless to say nothing developed.
Also, Mourinho reckons Eto'o is a few years older than his documents state, remember they had a public row over it,
so again, I would doubt there is anything in this story.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hey maybe there's a surgical procedure in the offing to make one striker with one good set of legs.

    ReplyDelete
  31. @ Ash, @ Nicholas

Read my entry below. Bony wants too much cash to be fin with.

Transfer fees are amortised over length of contract in our accounts, so 5 year deal is £3.8 million per year, yet he allegedly wants £100k + per week.

Suarez started on £40k, earned his increase

We don't want another Ryan Babel. Who's to say Bony doesn't settle down on easy street if he is gifted £5 million per year gross.

    Let him earn it

    ReplyDelete
  32. I've got good news for you, matey. Tony Barrett is reporting it is true.

May God have mercy on our souls.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'd be happy if we signed Eto'o. Only as a 4th choice though. We need a pacy alternative to Sturridge. We should have just paid the extra couple of million it would have taken to bring Origi here this season and then would have had a nice variety of different skillsets and experience.

    ReplyDelete
  34. His age, wages and the fact Lambert already fills the role in the squad, I can't see there being any truth in this whatsoever

    ReplyDelete
  35. The thing is B Rodgers needs to forget even considering Pensioner ETO, B Rodgers and the board need to eat humble pie and spend £60M on these three class quality attacking goalscoring players and squad will be set in attack for the whole course of season.

    1: Marquee Signing: M Reus(24) Of B Dortmund for £23-£28M RW / RWF
    Reus (24) would score 8- 12 goals a season and assists 8-10

    2: W Bony(25) Of Swansea for £14-£18M FD
Bony(25) would score 15-25 goals a season and assist 2-5 goals

    3: L Remy(27) Of QPR for £10-£12M FD
Remy(27) would score 20-30 goals a season and assist 1-3 goals

Those 3 attackers would cost the club £15M less than what we sold L Suarez(27), but they could bring in 43-67 more goals to club a season.

  36. Jamie I have to say I dont agree with you on a lot of things but my word you are spot on with this one. All liverpool fc supporters should be very afraid. I have been nothing but supportive of BR even with his many transfer failings but this is like over the hill bad. How do we go from supposedly enquiries of falcai nd cavani to a nobody it boghles my mind. The only hope I have is that the board doesnt allow this move because I struggle to believe they would allow a move for this way over the hill star when a failed medical (if that was the case) stopped from one of the best bargain strikers on the market. I love BR but his transfer activity to date has been horrible with that said hopefully coutinho keeps his form killer pre season.

  37. Totally agree. Plus, Liverpool's apparent reticence doesn't make sense. The club spends £20m on Markovic, who is totally untested in the Prem, and a comparative gamble, but baulks at £19m for Bony, a Premier League proven goalscorer?

    ReplyDelete

I am sure nearly every nay sayer on this site would just assume have Liverpool perform their business in the middle of the street with a big sign that states '75 million come and get it'
It appears BR will have to fight tooth and nail just to tread water with the modern day football fan who wants everything in place, by yesterday!
I for one am very pleased to patiently watch the team evolve into the Liverpool of old, (pass and move)!
    Y.N.W.A knee jerkers!

    ReplyDelete
  41. On the list of targets issue - it seems very much to be the case that Liverpool have multiple targets, not just "one or two". It started with genuine and confirmed interest in Sanchez, an almost-deal for Remy, then there was enquiry about Falcao and Cavani. Add Bony to that list and that makes 5 genuine striker targets. Then there were rumours over Benzema, Lavezzi, Icardi, Keita Balde Diao, Balotelli ... Those are just the ones we know about and there have been plenty of instances where Liverpool have pulled out surprise signings that didn't get much press beforehand. Even if most of those names are just speculative rumours it's simply not true to suggest that Liverpool only identified one or two targets.

At some point we have to admit that Liverpool are simply not able to attract top talent at the moment. Blaming Rodgers for that is pointless because there really isn't anything more he can do about it. All he can do is continue to evolve the team and have us playing exciting football. Putting our attacking football on the CL stage will be a big deal for Liverpool and if it produces results then there will be no hiding the fact that we are a top team. That's the manager's job, not personally going around to the doors of prospective players begging them to come here.

Bony seems the best option. I think the club needs to just pay the fee and get on with it. Eto'o is a distraction and I doubt anything will come of it. Bony supposedly wants to be at Liverpool, he'll work hard for the team and if he continues his current form he'll still be worth the same fee in 2-3 years if we want to upgrade.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Clearly LFC is incompetent that they have 75mil and cannot get a world class striker. I mean they pay scouts to scout - surely there is someone else other than Eto out there? If they don't get another decent striker than BR is looking at possible unemployment when they come in 8th this season. Lallana injured, Lazar injured and you know Sturridge will be out for 4-6 weeks...then what, Lambert? I see a possible point from the first three games and down hill from there. This season looks like a disaster in the making.

    ReplyDelete

I have faith we will get a decent striker in before the transfer window ends.

The way I understand it (and this is entirely based on uncited nonsense generated to sell ads) is that we're not bickering over wages - our hang-up is the transfer fee, which - as Jaimie points out - is absurd based on how much we spent on Markovic and (frankly) Lallana.

  51. Thought Glen Johnson had a great game. Some of his passing was sublime. Maybe he's found a niche at LB. If he can play like that all season we are set. But I won't hold my breath.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Jamie, I hope you realise that buying and selling players is not like playing Championship Manager or Football Manager.... there are so many complications and human factors to consider. For example, we can say that Gerrad's no longer effective in any position he plays anymore or he's no longer the best player on the pitch, so why not ask him to leave for the betterment of LFC? Isn't he too old or something? I don't think looking at the age of the player is fair. Even purely by history would be a little biased; How about Van Persie when he went to ManU? Or if history is anything to go by, Diego Forlan would have been a failure after leaving ManU. How did that turn out? Or how about Gary Mac when he came to LFC at 38? Sometimes, we just don't know.

To say the scouting is not doing their job is simply poor journalism. Do you honestly think that a year is enough to scout, shortlist, and get a player? How many scouts do you think we have? How long do you suppose it takes to "scout" a player? What if after spending months watching a player, they feel that the player is not up to par? How many players do you think we are watching at any one time? Did we not spend a couple years watching Origi before finally moving for him? Many times, it's preparation meets opportunity.

I would love to see Bony too. But would it not make sense to say use an improved young kid from the squad + a couple of experienced players this season (especially if Eto comes free), while waiting for Origi to join us next season? Many of the kids are ready to step up, and as long as the team plays it right, the scoring will happen. We all want the title this season, so I would suppose improving the team play and the way the system defends is more important, especially when we loose possession of the ball. I can't disagree that a player with better physic and technical ability would improve the first team. Infact, I am also really hoping to see another world class striker come in. But if we can't get that, then I hope players like Ibe and Peterson are given their chance in the first team. Wouldn't a young player like Ibe improve as well? What if he steps up and becomes the next Owen or Fowler? I would like to think that focus is on teamwork and team play. That's BR's trademark. We often underestimate the power of collective improvement.

I am quite sick of the comments from the so called "Legends" of LFC. Yes, I love them, and respect them for what they have achieved. But their opinions, especially Lawro, is sometimes really myopic and seem to down play everything LFC does. Is almost as if they are bitter that they are not running the club. I hope you don't go down that line.

I love your articles, so I hope you can be more objective the next time round. :)

Looking forward to the next article! YNWA.

Due to the likes of your Man city`s, Chelsea`s Barca`s and PSG This is the reason average players are demanding these rediculous wage demands and making life a lot harder for managers and clubs, to make a decision for fear of these players not being successful, and then finding it sometimes impossible to then move them on to another club because of their huge and undeserved wages.

  61. You keep accusing Brendan Rogers of wrong moves in the transfer market when for some time it's been apparent that Ian Ayers is calling the shots, as reported by the Mirror. Brendan wants Bony but "the transfer committee" feel he is not good value. Eto is yet another example of a cheap option that Ayers the money man, is going for to save money. Brendan wants Moreno but we have this long drawn out saga with his club as Ayers attempts to batter the price down! Ayers attempts at "value targets" will I believe compromise Liverpool's chances of success!

    ReplyDelete
  62. LFC need to eat humble pie & sign Remy or Bony that's the best it will get! I think we are delusional to think a marquee signing us around the corner despite years of absence from the CL! If BR adopts the stance if wait till January then serious Qs need to be asked. No planning post Saurez era constitutes negligence on both BRs part & scouting department. There is no director of football so BR must be involved.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Remy will prove to be a big mistake! These marquee signings are delusions of grandeur on LFC's part! Bony will also guarantee goals so why not cough up the cash.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I think BR wants a striker just for a year as a strong backup. Next year, Eto will be replaced by Origi. I think both Lambert and Eto are bought to be a quick fix and depth during cup matches and impact substitutes.
Only Sturridge is supposedly long term striker in the squad unless Borini to Sunderland transfer fails.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I think its the wage demand and not the transfer that is causing the problem.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Perhaps BR is waiting for the Jan transfer window to land a decent striker. In the mean time he's getting some temporary fire power like Eto'o. We have our midfielders who can score as well. Yet this is a risky game, where we finish in December is crucial on how we will end the season. I hope the Eto'o deal is just a backup plan if we fail on Cavani.

    ReplyDelete
  67. BR please sign bony

    ReplyDelete
  68. If you think about it.....it does make sense for one or both of a couple of possible reasons.... First if we rate Origi so highly and intend to integrate him next season, what is the point in forking out so much for Bony now. The other reason is we will be able to compete for better players next season provided we get back in the CL (which we will do as a minimum I think)....I think the Liverpool name is big enough to attract the top players as long as we are in the CL consistently, and I think a few top players might be looking at us, losing Suarez and thinking this may be a flash in the pan, next year will be different. It isn't all about this season, its about what follows. The trouble with Bony is, he is a very good striker, but he is not a top top player is he? He isn't going to strike fear into Real Madrid at the business end of the CL, so long term we need someone better right? he is reported to want a five year £100,000 on top of the £19m fee which a massive outlay, albeit one we could afford certainly. The problem comes next season, when we want to integrate Origi and/or buy a Cavani for example...then how are we going to offload Bony??? Those wages will put him in a bracket where only PSG, Monaco, Real, Bayern, Arsenal, Chelsea or the two Manchester clubs could sign him. Maybe one or two Russian teams but they seem to be tightening up now. Would any of them take him off our hands??
Highly doubtful.... So we would be stuck with him. And all this remember is for a player intended as backup to Studge as we will largely be playing 4-3-3.
So let's look at Eto'o....I guess i understand the concerns to an extent, but the one thing in your article that wasn't there was the stats. Despite what Jan Molby or any number of 'they' said about his faded powers...the fact is that he started 18 games last season (+3 sub appearances) and scored 9 goals and got 4 assists....and this in a Chelsea side that created roughly HALF the goalscoring opportunities we did last year. So he did perform (better stats than Bony albeit over less games)....those are the facts in spite of a lot of peoples opinions. Brendan knows what he's doing...and if we get 20 odd games out of him as back up he will do a job....and we won't be saddled with Bony for longer than we need.

  69. No they could not, because you can only field 11 at one time...
Remy(27) has failed the medical, doesn't make sense to even talk about him(27).
    MReus(24) just won't happen
    W Bony(25) is the only real target of those 3 players(27, 24, 25)
Just one more thing, why do we always put the player age after their names?

    ReplyDelete
  70. If we could have got Remy for £8.5m, it would have been good business as relatively low wages but he didn't pass the medical....that's it, done. This was not Rodgers fault. Bony could do a job but he is asking for £100k, that means we won't be able to move him on next year when we are established in the CL. He just isnt worth that is he? And where did you get that price for Reus?? There was one report that he had a £28m release clause but even if that's true why would they sell for any less. In one of your previous comments you quoted £15m for Matuidi.... he has just signed a 4 year contract with PSG and they don't have to sell to anybody....certainly not for that price. You are acting like this is Football manager and Brendan just has to wave a wand and get these guys.....

    ReplyDelete
  71. He is asking for £100k a week and he is a stop gap to our long term plans.....that makes him virtually untransferable next year.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Probably several but so far they have managed t keep it out of the papers

    ReplyDelete
  73. Maybe you should go support them now.

jaimie summed it up perfectly ,rodgers is a dud in the transfer market we need rafa in charge of transfers
bony and balotelli are still available one of them is good enough

    ReplyDelete
  77. Nevergonnacrackthecode8:50 am, August 12, 2014

i am so against this transfer i am questioning if rodgers should be our manager .
however , in 2011 if we get miroslav klose and saved the 35m on carroll that would have been a good decision

jaimie interested to know your opinion on what we should do now?

balotelli and bony are the best option, cavani is a massive risk at 60m no to that , or should we make a massive risk like carroll and spend 20m on someone like iccardi

and should rodgers keep his job?

    ReplyDelete
  78. Nevergonnacrackthecode8:53 am, August 12, 2014

why not keep borini instead ?

he scored only 2 less goals playing with inferior players and on teh wing for most of it

    ReplyDelete
  79. I think Jaimie you might be right. Well, look at Yaya Toure, he plays in a similar position to Jordan Henderson. Both of them play along with a DM in Fernandinho and Gerrard, respectively. Both of them play just behind a dedicated CAM in Silva and Coutinho, respectively. Another such player is Vidal/Pogba both of them play along with Pirlo.
    .
If Henderson truely wants to be a world class player (Vidal) or even a best box to box midfielder in EPL (Toure), he needs to achieve such stats. I am sure Vidal's, Pogba's and Toure's of this world have such stats and if Hendo want to achieve greatness, he might as well just learn from them. I also think, Emre Can should follow the same style of play since DM will be preoccupied by Gerrard and Lucas.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Rafa? He was just as bad. He only signed a few good players.

  81. The voice of reason.9:31 am, August 12, 2014

Sorry but Bony`s not worth £70k in my book if Suarez started on £40k, he should be happy coming to a team like Lfc in the first place, with a set wage of £50k a week then if he performs to a high standard, this season then review his earnings by performance and goals, i think that`s a fair deal, and that should should go for every player across the board.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Lets wait and see whats happening seems like a bit of rubbish journalism to me.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Tell me ONE good reason why rodgers should be sacked..

    ReplyDelete
  84. He didn't pass the medical... If the medical says the risk is to high then there's nothing more to say

    ReplyDelete
  85. Bony can stay at swansea if he's really only interested in his wages...

    ReplyDelete
  86. I am largely in agreement with Jaimie here but for balance Eto had an average of a goal or assist every two games in all comps last season. As a back up that could be worse especially as he would be little more than a stop gap. I am worried though.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Im a big fan Eto'o he is a striker that hasn't got the credit over the years like other players and it would be a shrewed signing from Liverpool to get him. He ticks a lot of boxes as he would fit into liverpools style of play and he wont expect to play every game. The coutinho sterling sturridge axis is Liverpools first choice attacking line up and at the moment I don't see a player available on the market that would improve that so id rather have a proven striker in Eto'o for a year than buy a forward for a lot of money just for the sake of it like we did before with Carroll.

    ReplyDelete
  90. The voice of reason.10:06 am, August 12, 2014

This rumour just doesn`t ring true to me in any way or form, i think this is another case of the media trying to belittle Brendan Rodgers, and our club too, this stinks of a Manchester United or even a cockney journo trying his best to get our supporters to respond negatively to our manager and owners, because they thought without Suarez we would crumble, can you smell the fear that Brendan has put into them over the course of the pre-season games, beware we are back again this season even bigger and better, they have good reason to be worried.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Yes they could, we are in 4 competitions this season are you forgetting that not just 3 like we were last season. In making Champions league B Rodgers was promised £60-£70M to strengthen Sqaud without any player Sales.
And B Rodgers set his targets and they were signed, whilst L Suarez(27) was shipped out for £75M, P Reina(31) has now been shipped out for £2.5M, C Coady(21) was sold for £500,000 and K Toure(33) is on his way out for £1.5M
So B Rodgers should have £145-£148M to spend plus whatever else he can bring on more player sales:
The L Remy(27) deal did not go through due to the fact F Borini(23) does not want to go Sunderland, but L Remy is three times the striker F Borini is and is a better than any striker at club.
Since B Rodgers reign he has not brought 1 world class player to club, the owners need to sack I Ayre as he is useless at completing transfers and get someone good at sealing deals in.
But B Rodgers needs to bring in the three attackers I mentioned for £60M
M Reus Of B Dortmund for £23-£30M RWF / RW
W Bony Of Swansea for £12-£17M FD
L Remy Of QPR for £10-£12M FD
And then whatever B Rodgers can get from shipping out: B Jones GK S Coates CB M Kelly RB
G Johnson RB L Leiva DM O Assaidi RW
    F Borini FD
He still needs to address the class quality GK to challenge S Mignolet: GK
LB: Because I Ayre is pathetic and Seville are playing games, M Rojo of S Lisbon should be signed instead.
DM: If B Matuidi(27) is not available, J Martinez(27) Of B Munich could be available but would cost between £25-£30M

i am quite mixed about this

last season we got kolo to replace carra because their was not another suitable option , this move allowed us to sign a beast of a player in lovren this season , maybe if we get eto now we can sign some top striker that plays versatile like suarez

    i can see the thinking

    ReplyDelete
  96. James, Rodgers has had over 6 weeks to bring in new striker. Now we are week away from league starting Teams no we need a LB and A FD bad, so they will take liberties.
There are pure good strikers out there instead of Pensioner ETO: Its just B Rodgers wants to bring in cheap and cheerful striker , that's how ETO creeped on list but he should never ever be on it or have got on there:
Here are some class good strikers out there between £12-£35M Bracket we could go for instead of L Remy(27) and W Bony(25):
    1: J Martinez(27) Of Porto
    2: L Adriano(27) Of S Donesk
    3: P Aubamayeng(25) Of Borussia Dormund
    4:C Bacca(27) Of Seville
    5: L Muriel(24) Of Udinese
    6: M Icardi(21) Of Inter Milan

  103. Rodgers wants to buy Bony, but it appears he's not being allowed to spend the money.
From all the various comments he's made on the subject, it seems like he and his team identify several candidates, with obviously some being higher priority than others. It then goes to the transfer committee to decide if the players identified are worth paying the money for.

jh: jolly good b rod, tell me about the striker situation

br: see, sanchez was our preferred target we have not got him there is not another player in the market that can replace him ,
rather then wasting money on players who may or may not suit the system when liek when you sigend andy c , we should get a stop gap

    jh: a stop gap?

br: like kolo toure when we could not fins a replacement for carra that summer now we have lovren

jh: i see the logic , bye b rdo , linda is calling me

  112. Didn't pass the medical based on playing for the Geordies & being selected for the WC? Is 8-9mill such a big risk for someone who will score 15 goals per season, the pace & strength that BR craves? Doesn't make sense? The heart defect is nothing new, he could sign a waiver.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Not worrying at all - it would only be for a year, until Origi arrives, and he probably wouldn't get on the pitch much anyway in view of the recent purchases.

    ReplyDelete
  115. As you haven't put any spaces in your response I can't read half of you answers.
Rafa did sign some good players, but he also signed a hell of a lot of rubbish ones.
Josemi, Antonio Nunez, Fernando Morientes, Scott Carson, Godwin Antwi, Voronin, Leto, Pacheco, Pennant, Insua, Itandje, Babel, Ngog, Keane. The list goes on... and on.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Bony or Remy? Remy IMO is too good to be considered as a stop gap especially as this "marquee striker" will not come let's be realistic. Bony will guarantee goals & is still young. If he's asking for 100k a week surely we should put some performance related bonus giving him the opportunity to earn that but ensuring he delivers then it would be worth the risk. We're out running out of options!

    ReplyDelete
  117. Nevergonnacrackthecode11:23 am, August 12, 2014

liverpool are on a similar boat to chelsea now:

    strikers: sturridge,lambert,eto......................strikers: costa,drogba,torres
    wingers:sterling,lallana,markovic,ibe ..........wingers: hazard,willian,schurle,salah

but chelsea have a much better midfield see:

    coutinho,gerrard,hendo,allen,lucas
    oscar,matic, ramires,fabregas,mikel ,

so we need to sign a player like fabregas maybe vidal and a player like matic maybe schniderlin

    ReplyDelete
  118. So at first you wanted Rodgers to be sacked because of a rumour. But now you are ok with it because someone mentioned a 'stop gap'....
Your knee must be jerking all over the place.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Seriously guys, stop believing everything you read in the British Press.

When you look at how many players they have linked with Liverpool in the past month we should of signed half the world by now.

    ReplyDelete
  120. So this is the best that a whole scouting committee could come up with. It's an absolute joke to even consider Eto. Which other potential top 4 team in the Champions League would buy in Eto? We need a quality striker otherwise our progress will be stifled and if we fail to get a top 4 finish we'll go backwards. Sort it out Rogers.Steve H.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Nevergonnacrackthecode11:40 am, August 12, 2014

that was an overreaction , sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Don't think we can control what the press are printing. 95% of all transfer news is complete fabrication (no I don't have statistics to back that up so I'm just as bad as they are) so I wouldn't be using a Telegraph story as a stick to beat Rodgers.
I agree he has made some very questionable transfers in the last few years (Aspas and Sahko my top two) but I like the majority of his signings this year and am quietly confident they could work out. But regardless of his past mistakes, I think Rodgers knows to stay clear of Eto'o. He is passed the top level, everyone sees it. I would be very surprised if there is an ounce of truth to this.
Should we end up signing him however, then the knives will come out.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I cannot believe it!!!! ..........hell talk about setting your sights low. All I can say is that BR better hope he knows what he is doing, if, at the end of this coming season Liverpool fail to make top 4 then the knives are going to come out in a big way, we seem hell bent on bringing in players that can guarantee we end up in 5th,6th or 7th spot and as for the Transfer Committee....don't get me started....sigh !!!!

    ReplyDelete
  125. there is a better one, Rihanna is buying LFC !
    lolololol

    ReplyDelete
  126. Ok now the criticism is getting pretty dull. Yes we have sold Suarez so that's an end to us playing two (let's be honest) number 9's (regardless of the numbers they wore on their backs that what Suarez and Sturridge really are) in a front 3.

LFC now have Sterling, Lallana and Markovic fighting for two of those wing berths, not to mention Ibe and Assaidi. Upfront nobody is taking that striker position from Studge. Lambert is just an alternative and at present until we sign someone Borini is back up.

So essentially that's the problem. LFC have to sign a top draw striker who will be happy to sit on the bench playing second fiddle until the oppotunity arrives... eg dreaded injury or giving Studge a rest.

How many £20-30m players out there do you think will be happy with that prospect. This simplistic view that we've got the money so we should sign someone is so dumb. We have to sign a top player to warm the bench... that's the long and short of it.

  135. Sakho is not a questionable signing. He has played well for us. Lambert...now that is questionable. He's not fast. He's old. He's a bit of a target man in a pass and move offense...what was LFC thinking?

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  138. What? It took way more than Klose to win the WC. What do you mean better attacking mid-fielders? We have awesome attacking mid-fielders right now...just wait and see. We need another PL proven, strong, fast goal-scorer who can play up front by himself if need be or play with Sturridge. IMHO the only two guys presently available are Remy and Bony...and Remy is out unless the deadline draws near and terms can be modified. I think Joel Campbell would be excellent...but he's not proven (WC performances notwithstanding). If only Jay Rodriguez hadn't injured his knee, I'd say he would also be excellent.

    ReplyDelete
  139. BR is not a joke...the scouting team have done pretty well this season...leaving you with....

    ReplyDelete
  140. I'm not willing to gamble top four this season on the hopes that an unproven 19 year-old is coming to save us next year. Way too risky. It makes economic sense to get Bony now and wait and see...but we need another class striker who can play with the speed of the rest of our attacking force. Bony can...Eto'o can't...simple as that.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  144. there is no point signing lambert then if this is true

    ReplyDelete
  145. Anybody with an ounce of commonsense can see the medical thing is a smokescreen! Just look at Remy's performances the past few seasons then tell me whether we could do without his services. Truth is Remy is the perfect fit for us: no adjustment time needed, works harder off the ball than Sturridge, has the pace & strength to play lone striker role, clever enough to play in a partnership, will guarantee goals, costs under 10 mill, international pedigree & the list goes on! All this talk of Falcao, Cavani is fantasy football, pure craziness. We are only just moving in the right direction after years of mediocracy. We got very lucky to get Saurez who in truth consider us a stepping stone to bigger things & he was right! Remy could have pushed us on & now with a week to go everyone can sense the desperation. A great recipe for being ripped off as per usual!

    ReplyDelete
  146. Lambert cost 4 mil, a very cheap buy for someone who will be a squad player, yet will still contribute with goals from the bench. Unlike any of last years options on the bench.
Don't agree about Sahko, we spent a lot of money for a player who is far from the finished article. Nearly o every game I have seen him in he has been either way too rash, or way too hesitant. He looks nervous on the ball and unsure of when to commit to a challenge. He just looks to me like he is always wary of making a mistake. Maybe that is something that will be trained out of him, but for 18mil I wouldn't expect that.

    ReplyDelete

To say Drs no better suggests that there is no critical appraisal on your part!

    ReplyDelete
  161. Im with you. Love love Bony and was calling for us to sign him before he moved to the Swans and was gutted when he did. But I just don't see him gelling into our style of play. He's more of an opportunist when I think we need someone who is better at making the right runs and can interplay with our AMs...step up Martinez. He has an absurd scoring record, is a very clever forward, and checks all my boxes. Problem is, like Bony, BR probably won't listen to me the first time and then we'll be linked in a years time trying to buy him for double

  163. Luis Muriel, Paco Alcacer, Solomon Rondon, Jese Rodriguez, Jackson Martinez, Lacazette, Bony, Abel Hernandez, Icardi, Mitchy Bistshayi, Mateo Daestro, Hulk, Guiseppe Rossi, Giovinco, Alessio Cerci, Kokorin just to name a few

  164. I can see the point of a 1 year deal for a striker in that it then allows Origi to have this year out on loan and then come back and get game time at LFC.

I know he is injured but i would put a £20 bid in for Benteke, Villa look doomed to be relegated and randy learner has no interest so will take the money.

    ReplyDelete
  165. I assume we will also be in for Joe Cole as a bookend signing for Sam Etoo. This CANT be the big naw signings Rodgers was promising"....can't be, can't be can't be...........

    ReplyDelete
  166. Lambert has a pedigree...we already signed him...and he's plugging a gap. Drogba...old guy signed to plug a gap...out for the next 4 months...Pass on this old guy.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Jesus.

What BR achieved last season was amazing considering where the clubs has been over the past 5 years.

To break back into the top 4 is a major achievement, especially after being out of it for the past 5 years.

As for the players we have signed, a lot of fans seem to think that we have some god given right to sign the best players in the world just because we finished 2nd last season.

As great as it was it was still only second. If we qualify for the CL again at the end of this season and have a good run in the CL then maybe the top players will be more interested, even then do not expect us to sign players for 40mil+ and pay them 200k per week.

  168. Wow that was bleak! Way too much negativity surrounding this transfer . Lets assess our strikeforce compared to our rivals. Bar City we are at least on par with the rest

I would take Dani over Rooney , Costa , Giroud, Lukaku, Adebayor . Bar Aguero I think we have the best ST in the league. Great pace and skill gives him an advantage over the rest.

RVP leads the second bunch of clinical veterans but not by much , Drogba, Saldado, Eto would offer decant back up with his expierance and wee bit of pace still left in him. We would not have to alter our style of runners breaking the lines.

Lambert offers us something different, Strong, with decant Technique and is a better option then Sanago , Torres , Kone , chico

So cheer up Lambert, Eto as backups for Dani is not as bad as it appears . 1 year deal, Origi comes back Phase lambert out and bring in a "mature, hungry?" Super Mario. Dani , Mario, Origi, pace power and a lot of goals.

  169. For all the respect like I said this morning, we have a young team we don't need a lot veterans in the squad please, Samuel is a great player and he as done everything for football, let the hungry young talent to enjoyed this is this very good year, please as a
    Liverpool fan

  170. Liverpool is not AC MILAN please BR. We bagging you we need Marco Reus

  171. Muriel- four league goals last season,
    Alcacer six,
    Rondon very recently joined Zenit,
Jackson Martinez star striker of a team that just sold France's fourth choice CB for £32m,
Lacazette woudn't mind if available, said he wants to stay at Lyon I believe?
Bony subject to availability- Expensive, alleged high wage demands
    Abel Hernandez could be viable
Icardi has a HUGE buyout clause, scored nine goals, very young (sounding potentially Borini-esque...)
Destro would be next to impossible to get,
Hulk crazy expensive with huge wages and off the back of an abysmal World Cup, wouldn't imagine he's that interested in a move to Liverpool either,
Rossi one of the most injury prone strikers on the planet,
    Giovinco two goals last season,
    Cerci viable,
Kokorin good stats, again subject to availability/desire to come

Naming players is a wholly different kettle of fish to actually being able to get them to the club, there are so many barriers to overcome to actually signing them, i.e. availability, cost, desire to join the club, opponent's willingness to sell... I would say four of them (bony, Hernandez, Kokorin, Cerci), based on recent statistics, potential value and their potential desire to join the club are potentially viable signings, but there's still an incredible amount of work to signing a player even after you've identified the targets themselves (reference, Loic Remy transfer saga).

  172. You have to accept that Suarez was a monumental contributor. Sturridge is VERY FRAGILE, he is going to pick up injuries on a regular basis. So, if we don't get a quality striker in, we will struggle badly to be in the top 4.

    It's all about goals ..

    ReplyDelete
  173. Eto'o and ebony how they called they not good enough, now for Liverpool, we need a very good striker with great profile

    ReplyDelete
  174. Why did it not go thru? I hate thinking about it. It's garbage. I do think it's the getting rid of Borini to buy Remy with that money n not spend further. Harry Rednapp was certainly shocked n who wouldn't . He will bring us the goals we need just the way he did with weaker teams n just imagine with the services he is going to get from our current players. He will be scoring more . Whatever is thought of the owner, I say they are true n obvious. FSG, what a pity. Don't blame Rodgers for that , he is doing a great job. Imagine he gets the support like Mourinho or LVG or other managers from the top clubs... We will have our hands on the trophies n I'm so sure of that.

  175. If we sign Eto he better score crap ton of goals against Cheslski!!

  176. You've missed the opportunity to change your avatar to a photo of that Nazi bloke with the round glasses having his face melted by the Ark.

    This mistake will haunt you.

    ReplyDelete
  177. WE pay a committee to find targets and they had 2 months. Muriel can blossom under tutelage of Rodgers. Four goals only because not used. Giovinco same situ.People are paid huge amounts to find targets and all they can give is a sorry Eto. I can give you MORE. Huntelaar,,Son, Pato, Volland, alfred finnbogason, Lasogga, andthere are hundreds of strikers still out there.

We must remain vigilant. Judgement Day is coming.

  183. Yesil. Looks good. Give him a go if fit.

    ReplyDelete
  184. Benteke is a true target man IMO. Bony moves well in a crowd and knows where to find space.

    ReplyDelete
  185. We become a joke. We will never sign a world class player and we will never win the EPL. Brendar Roger will spoil the money on a dozen of player's who will not replace one player Luis Swarby.

    ReplyDelete
  186. Good point, but it's fair to note that Mangala was their star centre-back, too.

After a few seconds' reflection, I don't know what I'm trying to say. Martinez will be expensive, as you say.

    Sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  187. I hope you're right. But it's a dangerous game in terms of looking desperate on the outside and maybe even affecting morale. Shouldn't be a need for it.

    ReplyDelete
  188. That was 9 and only 18 starts I believe and as per my previous comment Chelsea were incredibly defensive and created far less opportunities than us.

    ReplyDelete
  189. chelsea to sign remy will top it off, because he will go there and do a good job.

    ReplyDelete
  190. ...except that was the official LFC statement so cool your jets funk...and I think I have plenty of common sense thank you very little. Did Remy ever come out and publicly reject the failed physical statement? No. I don't share your desperation. I believe we'll get somebody. Even more sure now that Moreno is almost locked in and the 'signing committee' or whatever they're called can focus their attention on a striker.

    ReplyDelete
  191. I don't see how 'he doesn't fit our style' and 'is apparently BR's top target' can exist in the same article and comment section. I'm pretty sure BR knows the style of ball he wants played and if Bony is his top target, then I'm only pretty sure BR thinks he will fit 'our style' just fine.

    ReplyDelete
  192. You totally got the wrong end of the stick. The commonsense bit was a generalised statement not direct to you. Besides Remy not making a public statement doesn't prove or disprove anything. More than likely he was advised to keep quiet so as not to jeopardise any future dealings, which really is a sign of class! But guess what Harry Redknapp who is known for being outspoken, who has nothing to lose, who has a far better idea than you & I about how Remy trains/fitness levels came right out & questioned the medical. Didn't you stop to think that LFC would have been the ones to make that public statement?
You say you don't share my desperation, that's fine, I man enough to stand by what I say. As you mentioned Lawro mentioned re- examining the deal most likely because we were missing out on a fantastic deal & a fantastic player. Carra also said the same thing!

At the end of the day we still need a striker, who could share the burden with Sturridge because we once had a player called Saurez. Time is fast running out & I'd hate to have a repeat of the Andy Carrol scenario, that's where my despair comes from!

    ReplyDelete
  193. As I said I'd be on board for bony if it wasnt for the fact we have lambert. As for who BR wants, there is only one man who really knows that. We need a logical back up to sturridge, one who is able to stretch defenses by playing on the shoulder of the last defender-does bony do that??
