'It makes no sense': Redknapp blasts massive £27m transfer rip-off and makes controversial claim re Van Gaal

Is Luke Shaw worth £27m? LFC legend Dietmar Hamann recently ridiculed the exorbitant fee paid by Manchester United, and it seems that Jamie Redknapp also believes that Shaw is massively overpriced.

Transfer Rip-Off: Redknapp blasts £27m deal

Reacting to the Shaw signing in July, Hamann scathed:

"You wonder why young English players don't get a chance in PL? United paying £27m for Shaw is all you need to know. Ridiculous.

"If Shaw wasn't English he would cost £10m the most. That's why PL managers buy abroad because they get more for their money"

In his weekend column for the Daily Mail, Redknapp echoed Hamann's comments, and made the controversial claim that Shaw was signed without Van Gaal's consent. He noted:

"How can a left back be worth [£27m]. It makes no sense to me whatsoever. Are you telling me Louis van Gaal was tracking Luke Shaw? ‘Course he wasn’t. He was trying to get a World Cup squad together. He probably never saw him last year".

Whilst Redknapp may be right about Van Gaal not tracking Shaw, I sincerely doubt that Man United are stupid enough to sign a player over the Dutch boss's head. Given Van Gaal's strong personality, massive experienced, and readily apparent control freakery, that would clearly be a huge mistake.

Jamie Carragher disagrees with both Hamann and Redknapp, though, and insists that Shaw is actually worth the cash. In a recent column for the the Daily Mail Carra noted:

"Scouts have been flocking to see Shaw in action and it is no wonder the top clubs want to prise the left back away. Shaw will command a huge fee but it will be warranted as he has consistently impressed".

With respect to Carra, I have to strongly disagree. I just don't see how Shaw is worth £30m. What has he done to command a 'massive fee'? As usual, Shaw's grossly inflated valuation seems to be based on three things:

* He's English.
* He has pace.
* He's English.

If you listen to the press, Shaw - described by Liverpool new boy Adam Lallana as 'outstanding' - is allegedly an amazing attacking left-back, but for all his much-vaunted attacking qualities, he rarely scores or creates goals. In 67 games for Southampton, he has one goal, and one solitary assist. And this is worth £27m?

Plus, Van Gaal has already had to censure Shaw for being unfit, and the Dutch boss's ire seems justified as the 19-year old ended up getting injured very quickly. It wouldn't surprise me to see Shaw ultimately go the same way as Nani, Anderson, and Zaha, all of whom are now banished from the first team, which basically means their Man Utd careers are over.

Liverpool were heavily linked with Shaw, but it's a relief that the club stopped short of splashing out such an obscene amount of money. Admittedly, Rodgers sanctioned a similarly overpriced £25m for Adam Lallana, but at least he's a fully-developed player, and is heading into the best years of his career.

Lallana is clearly less of a risk than Shaw, but both will be burdened with the weight of their transfer fees, and it will be interesting to see who deals best with the pressure.

Additionally, comparatively speaking, £12m Liverpool new-boy Alberto Moreno is an amazing bargain, and it's doubtful that Shaw is better than the Spaniard to the tune of an extra £15m.

One thing's for sure: Southampton are laughing all the way to the bank this summer, and they're benefiting big-time from the football version of daylight robbery.

  1. But Southampton bought Shane Long for £12m, twice as much what Hull paid 6 months ago

  2. It is ridiculous. We can get 100M pounds for Sterling right now. Pound Sterling am talking about. Maybe 50M for Ibe, after he scores a couple league cup goals. Its ironic these English players cost so much but the national team is poop. No other clubs other than english clubs come in for these players....says it all. You have to have real talent like Bale, Owen even Mcmanaman.....add Sterling to that now.

  5. Why do you constantly bother yourself with utd issues, every week there is a utd related article on this website.
Get over it!!!! Shaw is overpriced, big deal, so is Llallana. The guy is 26 and has only played in the top division for two years, and he goes for 26 mill! At least Utd will get at least 10 years out for Shaw.

  7. You couldn't get 35M for Sterling...Please stop with the BS, you people kill me with your outrageous comments ...Sterling is a very good ENGLISH player..NOT Great!!!

Great is Messi..Ronaldo, Neymar, Suarez, VanPersie, Iniesta, Kroos, Reus, Robben, Imbrahimovic(sp)....Bale will be great--he's close....

  10. i concur. it seems that the one quality we look for above all is pace in english players. Guile seems irrelevant. no way is he worth 27 million even in the current inflated market.

Southampton are laughing at peoples stupidity. there will be hundreds of luke shaws in the dutch league which they can snap for £5 million! UTD are guilty of panic buys and a desire to show City and Chelsea that they still have financial power. But they are buying players that neither chelsea or city wanted in the first place.

Utd forget that fergie through sheer force of personality made the likes of young and carrick look like world beaters - they are infact very average. and once he went people began to realise the emperor has no clothes.

I would agree also that lallana was similarly over priced - and infact i dont see where he fits in. What we needed was a central midfielder able to tough it out with the likes of wanyama - though emre can may do it he is one for the future. We should have put the money to better use.

Lovren may turn out to be our best bit of business but shows that our scouting must have been a bit tipsy to advocate spending 18 million on sakho whilst lovren was nabbed for less than 10 million by southampton.

  11. It was no where near air tight- we lost 9 games that year
Steve Clarke is great for organising a team to be solid defensively, get men organised and behind the ball, to know their jobs. If you're a West Brom, that's fine.
But our defence has to operate as part of a very attacking unit, and that's not his strength. We scored a total of 47 goals all season with that 'air tight' defence

  12. With twistadee11 here!! Would rather see us buy Reus!! Cavani is not worth £50 mil + not based on the last 12 months and he slated LFC the other year in a Suarez quarrel!! And Falcao on loan is false economy! Can is the answer to the weak defensive mid cover!! Coutinho over the next 12 months will take Gerrards place!

  13. We wont get Cavani but your comment capable of challenging Sturridge for number 1 at 63 million he would want to make Sturridge number 2 without a doubt.

Some things don't change, always has to get his tuppence worth in. Even if he was from the Russian step he'd still cost more than ten million 'Arry he's a pretty good fb. Tell me one thing.. if he becomes a United player for the ten ten twelve years is he a waste of money. Fillipe Luis cost £24m and he's 29 why is Shaw singled out?? Would you buy a 19 year old Rooney for 28m?? No?? how about a 19 year old Ronaldo for 28m. Unless he's clairvoyant I don't see what the big deal is?? He's only 5m less than lallana and he's five years older?

  15. If Shaw who only scored one goal and got no assists and is meant to be an attacking fullback is worth £27m, you'd have to say Sterling is worth much more.

  16. I'm surprised in your great list, you haven't mentioned Gerrard, who is arguably better than Scholes, Hagi, Seedorf.

  18. After the weekends game i would be more inclined to chase Song first a striker second and a back up keeper 3rd.
Song is relatively cheap apparently and will start dont think the club need to waste that amount on Cavani; Bony would be fine.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I definitely believe they could get 35M for Sterling (not that I'm suggesting LFC should sell him). Great pace, and instincts in the attacking area. And lets not forget he's only 19. You would be hardpressed to find a more talented/accomplished 19 year old in the world

  20. "Gerrard better than Scholes".. Typical deluded bullshitting scouser.

  21. I think, Southampton 'll be a much better team this year. Their only real loss was Lovren. & the master stroke was to appoint a reputed European Manager. Koemann has off-loaded 4 Englishmen for 70mn+ (& has saved significant amount of wage), for me, over a 5 years period, that's a net gain of 100mn+, considering the sort of wage that would have cost to keep these players. Dusan Tagic already has shown what he can do in EPL & I am sure, he is charging much lower wage than Lallana. 3-4 young Dutch players for around 29mn combined (Lukk Shaw's price); Southampton are better than last year.

Koemann isn't a British manger, barring Sir Alex, most of whom are nobody outside British Isles - if he is allowed to spend the entire money in Europe, he 'll make a much better team, with talented but "value for money" players from Europe/LAmerica. I say value for money, because they are not cheap, rather English players are over priced & paid. Only transfer that 'll seriously hurt them is Lovren & that's why it took so long. Generally, you sell your quick money stocks ASAP, when the market is hot & in EPL, there is no better blue chip stock than a young & "Talented" footballer. LFC didn't learn their lesson after Camel trading, MU, I think already have understood - you don't behave crazy for a Left back, after spending 29mn to plug that hole.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Your talking of LFCs midfiled and you don't mention Coutinho....boy think again...PC is the personal computer that controls that midfiled in the attacking sense...I'll give to other two spots to Hendo...he's a total hard worker..amazing tracking and pressing, and doesn't fail to go forward when needed, he can also pick out passes like countinho...and the last spot goes to Stevie G based on merit...he hasn't got the legs to run that midfiled and track back at the same time so getting Song won't be a bad idea at all...to sure up the midfield and protect our shaky defence..

    ReplyDelete
  27. At 18, he is already earning 200k a week, much more than Stevie G. Ridiculous. And united are spending more on Rojo as well, 50-55mn on left back is too damn stupid.

  28. It is applicable for Brazilians as well of course. Recent example being Fernando failed transfer from Porto to Everton.

  30. Try this: A fair transfer fee is 2 million pounds per year of first team service you could expect from a player. Luke Shaw could be first choice left back for another 15 years. That's 30 million pounds right there. Apply the same formula to a few different players ... it seems about right.

He's not worth that much because he's a particularly brilliant player but simply because he's a quality player who is already good enough to play first team football for Manchester United. Your paying for both the longevity and also the lack of risk. The big problem for any club these days is knowing if an inbound will be any good. Doing well in Spain or Italy or anywhere else is no guarantee. Having a good international tournament is no guarantee. The only guarantee comes in having already played in the Premier League and already being at the level required. In order for Shaw to flop at United he would have to regress as a player and that's not very likely to happen. A good manager will see him improve, probably quite significantly. So the risk is virtually zero.

We may have gotten a good deal on Moreno but he could turn out to be an average player in England. No one knows that. If you had to simply pick a team and you lined up Moreno next to Shaw and asked every PL manager who they would prefer, ignoring the fee, I think they would almost all choose Shaw. He's not some uber-gifted genius but he IS a quality football player and to be that good at his age is truly rare.

  31. Lovern was good, once he settles the Center Back position wont face trouble

    ReplyDelete
  32. Capoue(26) is a class quality DM, Fully fit and injury free he would be awesome for any club playing the DM Mould and because Tottenham are having clear out. E Capoue(26) B Rodgers could bring to club for £6-£9M.

And when B Rodgers gets him fully fit and injury free, you would see a serious beast of a DM in the centre of the park.

    He is in the same mould as B Matuidi(27), Y M'Vila(24), J Martinez(26), Fernando(28) and J Mascherano(30).

He would offer better protection to back four than S Gerrard(34) and L Leiva(27) together.

As for Luke Shaw, well this has been the case for English players for many years and it will only get worse as less top quality English players come through.

FFP has only made this much worse now as clubs are buying up younger talent at an increased rate in order to get round it. This just means that young players instead of playing competitive football learning their trade are playing in meaningless reserve matches.

  45. I agree with most of your points. Unless an extremely unlucky circumstance plays out for both club and player, Shaw will be a first teamer for over a decade plus he is first team ready right now. Of course, it's still an insane amount of money, but it's not David Luiz crazy. There's every chance it could go wrong, but there are deals to suggest it's a fair move like Rooney, Buffon et al. The big mistake United made was letting Evra go a season early, but who cares...

Let's see who turns out better; Shaw or Moreno. I'll judge their overall play and not convenient stats to skew the argument.

  46. If Bale ISN’T great why does he hold the world record transfer fee then ?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Good piece, Jaimie. One thing for me, though. After reading the article completely and then going through it once again to gather the main points, I felt that your words lost credibility when you mention that Shaw is English, twice. Even mentioning pace, it seems like a shot to the traditional English footballing culture, which you often like to take. It reminded me of your Suarez article when 4 out of something like 9 reasons not to sign him where 'he's a cheat'. It's not reinforcing anything. I agree with you re the fee itself, but think of the fee what you will, there is more to Luke Shaw's game.

If continental club rules were strictly enforced and not bypassed with loopholes such as B squads, young English talent would be worth every penny to the top clubs.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Song would be most peoples choice over Capoue me thinks, he may cost a bit more but has the experience of playing with and against some of the worlds best.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The fee paid for Shaw makes him the most expensive teenager in footballing history. I take your point that if Shaw becomes United's first choice left back for the next decade or more then that fee may represent good value; can't argue with that. He's a fairly accomplished player right now, but he's still a long way from becoming a great one - his meagre creative output is proof of that, and he only has 60 games at a senior level. The problem with paying big money for a teenage, relatively inexperienced player is that there can be no guarantees that he will develop, physically or mentally, to a degree that justifies such a fee. Shaw has the ability, but his body is likely still growing, his muscles still changing. This is why buying a player who is at or near his peak will always represent a better (safer) investment; by then you can be more certain of the qualities a player has; his mentality, strength, susceptibility to different types of injuries and his ability to perform at a consistent level. Van Gaal clearly already has concerns over Shaw's fitness, which isn't a great start. I'm not saying Shaw can't or won't become a great left-back in time, but the uncertainty doesn't justify the fee.

The point he is making is Shaw has already shown what he can do in the EPL and is still very young. Moreno is therefore more of a risk though for less money. Seems like fair points to me,

Moreno could turn out to be excellent and his fee will be a bargain but if he turns out not to be tht good it will still be wasted money. Shaw might seem overpriced now but as pointed out he has many years ahead of him and is already a very good player likely to only get better.

Hardly surprising really. Transfer fees mean nothing these days, it's just how much do the clubs want the players.

we need another target man like a hole in the head. he lacks the necessary pace and creativity. He'd fare no better than Carroll, Heskey, Riedle, Dundee, Morientes or Kuyt (up front). We don't do very well with strikers who cannot make chances for themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  75. All the other 3 are pretty replaceable. Shaw is massively overrated (atm) as explained by most comments here, Lambert was getting pretty old too. Lallana has skills, but Tadic and co are pretty impressive in their own right. A good CB is hard to come by for a team the size of Southampton, but the other 3 are fairly simple buys.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Thanks. It's always boring to explain something twice, that too in written.

    ReplyDelete
  77. You are confusing (market) price, value and true worth. Clubs are setting prices to protect their assets. Buy-out clauses are interpreted as a players true worth. Younger talents are valued and priced differently from older players. British players from right or wrong are imagined to be more capable in the EPL and won't have to bed in to get use to the physicality and pace. A player like Lallana was priced 25m as he was highly valued at Southampton. Is he worth that on open market? Probably not. Same with Shaw. Hamann and Rednapp are judging price/value, Jamie is looking at worth and potential and prepared to ignore price.

    ReplyDelete
  78. That's one thing more than Lucas ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  79. Sell on clause is major a factor. Buy low sell high. Makes sense not buying Cavani. Borini, Assaidi and a few others on payroll could see to not landing another striker. Two weeks of transfer window, no targets other than Lavezzi and Eto. One prefers Juve, the other won't take a pay cut and why should he?
Means City game sees this set up manning up. Plenty spent already. Performances needed.

  80. Song(26) is better offensively than defensively. And we need a mobile tough tackling defensive midfielder who will solely protect back 4 and nulify attacks. A Song(26) is better offensively and we have a lot of centre midfielders who do not protect back 4 at all

  81. I have seen Ox playing well in EPL and Markovic is a bet. Miles ahead? How can you be so sure? Ozil is miles ahead of Coutinho and I think everyone will agree to that. Walcott IMO is as good as Studge when fit.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Reus for less than £30m will never happen - He lead the bundesliga in assists last year. Also, we need a fast 2nd striker that is versatile, not a winger. I don't know who (lavezzi ?) But Reus or Bony would not fit the bill. I think you're not far off about buying a cdm, though I think if we do splash out it should be on more of a cm, such as Vidal. A 2nd striker shouldnt be more than £20m.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Interesting that your argument doesn't counter mine with any intellegence but makes assumptions about things I never said in an attempt to sound hard. For you to think that any liverpool fan would suggest Bony will make up for Suarez's goals is as childish as your post. I thought most fans would have realized by now that the idea isn't to replace his goals but to reduce the number we let in while maining a high production level up front in order to win more games. Trying to make up for his goals alone only ensures more 3-3 scorelines.
Cavani is a good player but I am not going to support a 60mil bid for a guy who has not looked the same for a year now. If you want to do that on Fifa and ensure he get's 30goals next season by playing on "amature mode"...be my guest

    ReplyDelete
  84. What the hell are you talking about better offensively than defensively all his time at Arsenal he scored 6 goals.
At Barca he scored 1 he is a defending defensive mid who can go forward but was never really attacking until his final season at Arsenal.

  85. Reus(25) has release clause of £21.8M for next season, so if B Rodgers and I Ayre take their damn fingers out and offer £23-£29M I am sure we will get our man.
The most annoying thing is we offered Barcelona £34M for Sanchez(25), Reus(25) is of the same calibre, class and quality of Sanchez(25) and would be a great addition to squad
Why B Rodgers is wasting his time with Falcao(28) is madness, he has just come back from huge injury and is waiting for Real Madrid to sign him permanently? But if they do not he may join us.
Forget that, B Rodgers should spend £50M on M Reus(25) and L Adriano(27) Of Shakhtar Donesk.
Both Reus(25) and L Adriano(27) both would bring class, creativity, European experience, Goals, mobility, pace and speed to squad.
And B Rodgers should have brought Y M'Vila(24) to club this summer but wasted time, the three DM who would do well for club B Rodgers should go for are:
    E Capoue(26) Of Tottenham for £6-£9M
    C Tiote(27) Of Newcastle for £14-£16M
    B Matuidi(27) Of PSG for £17-£20M
We need a CDM who will solely defend and protect/screen back four and stop opposition's best players dictating tempo of play like Hamman, Mascherano and Sissoko used to for club 5-9 seasons ago.

  86. A Song(26) is better Offensively than he is Defensively, its just at Arsenal there are so many better mobile creative Offensive centre midfielders at their club and he had to play the DM role.
Same thing is now happening with M Arteta(30) , M Arteta(30) is much better offensively than he is defensively but does not have the legs, mobility or pace to hurt sides and there are too many better creative mobile pacey centre midfielders at Arsenal so he has been made to play the DM Role.
But M Arteta(30) like S Gerrard(34) is no DM. They are the two best passers in league, but both do not have the legs, mobility or pace to move around.
So the best teams will just let one of their strikers drop deep and mark stop them starting attacks from deep or let their AM do that job instead as Arteta(30) and S Gerrard(34) are too laboured and static compared to the young central midfielders they are coming against week in week out in the premiership.

  87. No credibility in that list at all I love Henderson but in no way is he a top 10 attacking player in the prem not a chance also how do you have sterling ahead of Hazard and Yaya Toure?? Toure scored 20 goals last season from a deep midfield role easily top 3. On a side note it's interesting that you have Henderson ahead of Couthino in an attacking players rank.

  90. I know that BR said that he sees PC as a midfield general in the future, but currently i think he will be given one of the 3 attacking slots in the team and not one of the three midfield slots... Else, it's a big risk and the midfield may get overrun...

  92. Greg, I don't smoke thank you i am asthmatic.

What midfielders in the league are better passers of the ball than M Arteta(30) and S Gerrard(34)?

But those two class quality players do not have the legs, mobility or pace and are poor tacklers.

    So how are they DM'S?
