Late Deal? Barca desperate to sell 'powerful' £20m star to LFC before the transfer deadline

Liverpool are reportedly considering a move for Barcelona midfielder Alex Song, a deal which could finally bring to an end Lucas Leiva's Anfield career.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca:

* Liverpool, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Everton are all interested in signing 26-year old Song, and Barcelona want to sell the player to one of those four clubs.

* Barcelona are desperate to sell the midfielder before the transfer deadline.

* Song prefers a move back to the Premier League.

* Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo recently claimed that Barca want £20m for the player.

When asked about Song's future in a recent press conference, Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta confirmed that the club will consider offers for Song. He told reporters:

"He [Song] has got a contract, but if any offer comes, then we will certainly evaluate it"

Song-to-Barcelona always seemed like a strange move to me; the Cameroon international is clearly more suited to the Premier League style of play, and with Barca's huge array of top quality players, Song's prospect's of attaining a regular, long-term starting role at the club seemed slim.

With Rafa Benitez aggressively pursuing Lucas Leiva, there could soon be an opening in Liverpool's squad for a defensive midfielder, and Song is clearly a good option to consider.

Anfield legend Jamie Carragher certainly seems to think so, and in a column last season for the Daily Mail, he enthused:

"Big, powerful and versatile, Song has only made seven appearances this season and would definitely give an edge to a midfield in this country. He was suited to the physical side of the game when he was here with Arsenal".

Worth a bid?

  1. Yeah I would def have him in the team, he was prone to the odd gaff but would be an upgrade on Lucas. If we get a few mil off Napoli aswell it would take the sting out of the 20 mil price tag. Not sure he would start for us though with Gerrard occupying his role, would need to rely on injuries or fatigue to get a game so that will probably count against us if he has to choose a club.

  2. B Rodgers should spend £6-£9M on bringing in E Capoue(24) Of Tottenham to club instead of spending £20M on A Song(25).

E Capoue(24) fully fit and injury free is a beast and an awesome DM, he is in the same mould as Fernando(28),Fernandinho(29), B Matuidi(27), Mascherano(30),Momo Sissoko(29),J Martinez(27) and Y M'Vila(24).

All those DM above are better than A Song(25), All of those DM sole role is to protect the back four , read and nulify danger , get ball and get things ticking over. We need a player like that, someone who will just do the dirty work in the centre of the park.

B Rodgers needs to bid for E Capoue(24) Of Tottenham and bring him to the club this summer as OUR DM shield to protect back four as L Leiva(27) and S Gerrard(34) do not have the legs or mobility to protect back four

  3. He was impressive when he was with Arsenal, good going forward as well. Although he is considered to be defensive midfileder, I don't rate him highly when it comes to his defensive ability. Good option but we already have enough players of similar qualities.
    .
And for 20mn? haha, no way!!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yes, I'd definitely take him.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I think Emre Can was bought for that sole purpose.

    ReplyDelete
  6. How the hell do you remember all their ages?

    ReplyDelete
  7. I remember him linking up very effectively with fabregas before he left for barca. He can spot a pass from deep and is a strong dm. Id love if we signed him, would be great competition for stevie. Hes fresh and probably very hungry;.sign him up brendan.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Because every great side in world needs a DM in the Makelele Mould. Unless you play in Spain and are Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Since we lost Mascherano in 2008, we have not replaced his class or quality at the club. He was our Insurance/Protective screen in front of back four.Someone who sacrifices themselves for the team and just does the dirty work in the centre of park and protects back 4 and stops the oppositions best attacking players dicating the game.

And we need a player of that class, calibre and mould at club desperately as Gerrard and Lucas do not have the legs, mobility or pace for that playing the DM role.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Its called Football Manager Mania, I have been through that phase. Btw, twistadee11 was keeping low profile until I dared to ask him why. He is quite impressive, isn't he?

    ReplyDelete
  10. And people, relax. We will sign a striker. But if you're offered Alex Song (hopefully at a good price) while you're at it, you may as well take him. Saying, 'we have Emre Can, don't need him' is just silly. Emre Can relatively speaking is a rookie with raw talent that yet needs polishing.

    ReplyDelete
  11. That wasn't his question exactly. But yes I agree with you. I think Gerrard has done ok and Lucas as a backup is fine for this season. We will need world class DM in near future though, to replace ageing Stevie G.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Besides, wasn't a DM a player we were all crying out for in the January window anyway? We still haven't found that proven DM/box-to-box, yet now all of a sudden, we don't need him? I know Gerrard stepped into the role very well, but he's getting old guys...

    ReplyDelete
  13. and he will not get that polishing if we try adding midfielders and push him further down the pecking order

    ReplyDelete
  14. E Can is better offensively than defensively. He is like Moussa Sissoko, M Dembele, Y Toure and M Diame, All Athletic Mobile powerful strong tall central midfielders with speed who are better offensively than Defensively.

E Can will be more similar to the players above than J Martinez, B Matuidi, Fernando, Fernandinho, Momo Sissoko, J Mascherano, Y M'Vila, E Capoue and Sandro.

Real tough tackling mobile enforcers who are better defensively than Offensively.

I think we could accommodate him but for a little less money maybe £15m but not a penny more, Let Allen and Lucas go and get it done already Brendan, what you waiting for send bombardier Ayre, tell him to get his backside on that momo bike and go straight to that Airport now, with them there biggles goggles and hat on we need a bloody Striker too while your at it man, don`t you dare come back without one.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Emra Can largely played in defensive position at Leverkusen and we already have Gerrard and Lucas, even Allen plays there. Yes we needed DM but Emre Can is good enough for now.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ha, but I was asking how you remember their ages...

    ReplyDelete
  18. Apparently Lucas is the one making way for Song.

lets get a cf first thats wa we realy need

    ReplyDelete
  20. Better teams will just get or let
one of their mobile quick strikers drop deep and man mark L Leiva or S Gerrrard to stop them man starting attacks as better teams will know Gerrard and Lucas do not have the legs or mobility to get away from their markers.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Lucas is good defensively and I feel really bad for him. He has been out of form ever since Stevie G played in that deeper DM role and Lucas was asked to push forward. I think Lucas played out of position most of the times and he is still pretty good as DM, IMO.

rather tkr the 20 am buy boney

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh dear, what's the matter...

    ReplyDelete
  24. we already have emre can.. and the price? after the world cup performance, i dont think liverpool should buy him..

    ReplyDelete
  25. That will be a bad news. Lucas is much better defensively, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  26. After WC performance we shouldn't have Gerrard...Utd shouldn't have Rooney....Real Madrid maybe should or shouldn't have Ronaldo...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Honestly, Lucas is getting stale with me...

    ReplyDelete
  28. L Leiva has improved over the years but he never had the energy, mobility or pace that Mascherano and Momo Sissoko had when they were at club.

And he never ever has been to the class or quality of Hamman, Sissoko or Mascherano.

L Leiva and S Gerrard both do not have the legs or mobility to protect a back four in a side full of youth, pace and speed.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 'Good-natured banter is fine'. No, not the most exhilarating showcases of banter but nevertheless...

    ReplyDelete
  30. For me the question would be "Is Song better then what we currently have"

If the answer is Yes then of course he would be a good signing,

    ReplyDelete
  31. Sell Lucas and Allen to get Song.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I would take him but Barca are having a laugh if they think teams will bid 20 mil for him when he has not even played. 10 million and I would take him because he is a great player and MO, his departure hurt Arsenal more than RVP's.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't play football manager thank you, most of the players i have talked about over the years as i used to eat sleep football i followed and watched pure players and have always known most players ages thank you.

5-6 years ago i was always going on about J Navas, D Capel, Coutinho, G Rossi, D Silva, Pato, J Biabiany.

Players who could and would suit our club

Whenever i mention G Rossi who is 27, people go on about his injuries. But he is an out and out finisher and today i find out we are now linked with him, he would be a great signing.

G Rossi is mobile quick and a deadly finisher ( Upgrade on F Borini)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I only mention it because quite a few people seem to get on Twistadee's case for the style of his posts. In most cases, it is unnecessary and irrelevant, and I don't want him - or anyone else - to feel pressured.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Rossi is a great player no doubt and I would love to see him at our club but the man has had too many injuries. What is the guarantee he will not get injured again. It will be another Agger case. There is no point in being a great player when you are not even on the pitch.

    ReplyDelete
  36. IN MY OPINION LUC ASS ALLEN SHOULD PAVE THE WAY FOR A SONG, GET ME??????.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Lucas is better defensively, so B Rodgers should not even think about song. But Lucas and Gerrard do not have the legs or mobility to protect a back four good enough in side full of youth, mobility, pace and speed.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Emre may see more time as a central mid more so than a defensive midfielder anyway lets get Song he would be just what they need.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I would love Rossi to join LFC.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Couldn't quite hear that, mate. Speak louder next time.

    ReplyDelete
  41. They think he is past his injuries, the funny thing is we are now after G Rossi who has injury problems in past. Yet we didn't sign L Remy due to medical but in the two years in premiership he has been he has been injured and out once.

I would like L Remy to be brought to club still but B Rodger and I Ayre are not willing to eat humble pie and say they made a mistake.

B Rodgers could bring a 20 goal a season striker to club for £12M

If B Rodgers could bring in M Reus and either L Remy or G Rossi or both with Reus, I think our attack will be set for the next couple of years , let alone just this season.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I too think that Emre Can will provide cover for Henderson due to their similarity. But he is versatile enough to be a cover for DM as well, him and Lucas/Allen will be enough for this season.

    ReplyDelete
  43. More to the point - WHY? :-)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thought of a career in scouting?

    ReplyDelete
  45. No both Lucas and Allen can go neither offer a lot ATM but at least Lucas was good once.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I mean song is an upgrade on lucas but if we were to sell lucas prob in the range of 10-12 is it really worth it to shell out another 8-10 mil for a back up player? Hendo and can are both capable of filling that role our mid has plenty of depth with coutinho adapting to play a cm role if needed and lallana as well i say still sell lucas save the money and use that cash to buy a striker as cover for sturridge

    ReplyDelete
  47. Come on man we have Allen the welsh Xavi, or Coolhand Lucas the Brazilian ikickamanalot, So what you think? maybe a Song dear oh dearry me.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Before he played as DM and later was asked to play further up because of Gerrard's new role. He is still a good DM, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Fair enough. I can assure you I wasn't trying to bully him.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Allen offers nothing not sure if Lucas will ever recapture his old work rate but Song adds work rate physicality and is a fair passer of the ball.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yes he was i seen him tut tut.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Some suggestions are to sell Lucas AND Allen to get Song..? This makes no sense. Allen had a strong end to the season last season and has looked alright in preseason. He's also been a good option when either Coutinho or Sterling are having a bad game. As a swap for JUST Lucas is fine... mindless dislike of a player is ridiculous, note: Henderson.

    ReplyDelete
  56. The voice of reason.1:31 pm, August 14, 2014

Lets bring a striker in first then if we get that out of the way "Yawn" we can think about other options like Song.

    ReplyDelete
  57. The voice of reason.1:32 pm, August 14, 2014

But i agree we could sell Allen and Lucas for A Song.

    ReplyDelete
  58. gerrard, rooney and ronaldo didnt elbow an other player because they were losing.

    ReplyDelete
  59. If we can get Song for less than we sell Lucas for, then fine. Otherwise I'm not convinced of the necessity. What we really need to do at the moment is focus our efforts and our finances on signing that striker which is the missing piece of the jigsaw.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Yes i agree Henderson`s a very accomplished player now, but Allen`s still woefull sorry harsh maybe but true.

    ReplyDelete
  61. They also didn't bite a player but we were all willing to keep the biter weren't we...

    ReplyDelete
  62. Good post I've said this for years & watched in horror as we ignored a lot of African/Euro African talent after Houlliere's era as the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea bought into this! I specifically mention this ethnicity as there have been a conveyor belt of players who fit this mould-Viera, Momo & Moussa Cissoko/Sissoko, Matuidi , Makalele, M'Villa, Diame so on & so forth!
Perhaps we were scarred by Salif Diao who by no means was a world beater but was he that bad?
I believe Man City are buying into this with Fernandinho & Fernando these players will continue to give them the edge !
Overall I agree that whilst Leiva has been a good servant he needs to be moved on. Song would be nice but I'd prioritise a striker!

    ReplyDelete
  63. What's that got to do with individual performance anyway?

    ReplyDelete
  64. No he blotted his copy book with me after he chose Italian over English how very dare him.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Pitty they never we might have gotten through the group stages if they had of, haha.

    ReplyDelete
  66. A Song is better offensively and would not just sacrifice himself for the team playing the DM Role. He is like E Can, Y Toure, M Dembele, Moussa Sissoko and M Diame.

In his last season at Arsenal , he applied so many assists to Van Persie and was always found further up the pitch.

We need one of these players:

    B Matuidi OF PSG
Y M'Vila Of R Kazan ( On Loan at Inter)
    J Martinez Of B Munich
    E Capoue Of Tottenham

Those DM, their sole aim is to protect back four, read danger, stop oppositions best players from dictating play. Winning ball and moving ball on quickly

B Rodgers should bid £6-£8M for E Capoue fo Tottenham, Bring him to club then get him fully fit and injury free and in Europe when we go far in the competition and get to play the likes Of B Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid,A Madrid, B Dortmund, Juventus and AC Milan away from Home this is where Capoue or any of the DM's above will earn their money and their status at club.

    ReplyDelete
  67. In other Barca related news, the Suarez ban has been upheld, although he is allowed to train.
Back on topic, I don't think Song is needed. He may be a bit better, but not really much.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Considering how much freedom Henderson had after Lucas came on against Dortmund, he wouldn't be a bad shout to start the season, though Can is probably the way forward in a 3 man midfield and Lallana will return and play most games because of his price. I still think Lucas deserves a role within the squad.

The way I see it, if a midfielder isn't definitively better than Henderson it's not worth signing them. Lucas and Allen can be great squad players and it would be difficult to have anything better than that.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I can't disagree with that! I was especially impressed with Matuidi in the WC!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Good point regarding Henderson.. It seems that Can wont be just somebody who was around for a season, so dont think we need more midfielders..

    ReplyDelete
  71. Now...if this would have said the 'striker' Alex Song, I might be interested, but the 'midfielder' Alex Song doesn't interest me.

    ReplyDelete
  72. 20 million...?????
The pause was while i picked myself up from rolling around the floor laughing. It's up for debate whether we need him at all, certainly not at that price.
Regardless I'm pretty positive that there is no truth to this whatsoever. It's debatable whether we need a player like Song in our team at all but certainly not for that price

    ReplyDelete
  73. Drivel as always

    ReplyDelete
  74. /////////////Mignolet
    Moreno, Lovren, Skrtel, Manquillo//
    /////////////////////////Gerrard
    /////////Can////////////Henderson
    ////////////////////Coutinho
    Sterling
    ////////////////Best striker in the Epl
And that is not near the best team we have, plus only Migs and DS, do not have good long term substitutes, but we can manage for 5 or 6 matches. Really confidant about this season...

    ReplyDelete
  75. I badly wanted B Rodgers to go for B Matuidi but he would be hard to get due to the fact some fans pointed out to me that he had recently signed new deal. But E Capoue Of Tottenham fully fit and injury free is better defensively than Offensively and is athletic mobile powerful strong tall with speed and he would be a class signing for us.

B Rodgers should offer Tottenham £6-£8M to take him off their hands to come and protect our back 4

    ReplyDelete
  76. In other news we are now being linked with Giuseppe Rossi (with his injury record please god no)

Is there striker we haven't been linked with yet? It is getting ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Surprised we haven't been linked with a return move for Andy Carroll.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Whatever you say if only you knew anything about football i would take you serious , but you don't so i never do?

Why have some of the best teams in europe brought in a world class centre midfielder?

    Barcelona: Rakitic
    Chelsea: Fabregas
    Man City : Fernando
    Man United: Herrera
    Real Madrid: Kroos and Rodriguez

Because most games are won in the centre of the park.

Why have most teams in world strengthened at back this season:

As no matter how good your attack is , if you can keep clean sheets you will win games.

Barcelona: Marc-Andre ter stegen, C Bravo 2 GKS, J Mathieu and T Vermalen Two Left footed CB

Chelsea: Luiz LB and brought back Courtois from Loan GK

Arsenal: D Ospina GK Chambers RB Debuchy RB

Man City: Mangala CB Fernando DM Sagna RB
    Man United: Shaw LB
Our team: Lovren CB Manquillo RB Moreno LB
    Real Madrid: K Navas GK

We still need good class quality GK to compete with S Mignolet? Drivel?

A Mobile quick tough tackling DM to offer the legs, mobility, pace and protection of back four L Leiva and S Gerrard can't offer? Drivel?

    ReplyDelete
  79. I wouldn't be surprised if we were

  82. That means bye bye to Leiva and Allen!! Which won't be a disaster IMO despite Allen's improvement.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Just read that Lavezzi turned down a new contract with PSG and has been told to hit the road. Also read that Atletico are asking Chelski about Schurrle. Both Lavezzi and Schurrle are wingers. Of the two I would much prefer Schurrle: younger, faster, quicker, smarter to be up front with Sturridge. Why not?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Schrurle simply beecause he isnt creative but a goal scoring winger. BTW Willian would be the perfect signing at present ....

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

  90. Pablo Von Mooneyo3:49 pm, August 14, 2014

Lucas has become an absolute liability, constant giving away of cheap free kicks and two speeds, slow and stop! This move IMO makes alot of sense. Can isn't a defensive minded midfielder neither is Gerard or any of the others in the squad and we need at least one! I feel in away games against the other top 5 teams we need to be more solid and take advantage of the incredible pace we have up top & play on the break, home games and against lower level teams a DMF isnt a necessity but certainty in games against our champs league rivals the team needs more bite in midfield.

The squad is so much stronger looking than last year with pretty much two quality options for each position, but there is still 3 big holes to plug,

    (A) another 20 goal a season striker no.1
    (B) a quality DMF who can pass the ball, Song certainly fits the bill here IMO
    (C) a proper GK to rival Mignolet for when he eventually fucks up again.

If it costs 20M to get him from Barca then so be it, its better of to have him in the squad for the season than regret it come next May.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Yes we need to address GK and midfield issues but the most important issue of all is a striker. We need to get a striker now and sort other problems in the next window

    ReplyDelete
  92. I'm just looking for someone who can play striker because when Sturridge goes down...which he will...we won't have a finisher. I am not interested in anymore midfielders this season.

  97. I always liked Fabian Delph. Thought he would be great. Covers a lot a ground.

    ReplyDelete
  98. As a Barça fan, I can say he will definitely not cost as much as £20M. In Spain the figure being discussed is €20M (£16M) or slightly less. So €20M with performance add-ons sounds about right.

He's got a lot more legs and is strong defensively as well as excellent on the ball, which gives him a big natural advantage over old Gerrard immediately.

    ReplyDelete

  100. Cannot see us signing another CM so cross Song off the list.

Apparently we are after Konoplyanka again.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Where'd you see that?

    ReplyDelete
  102. Well okay then.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Saying we should sign Capoue for 8m is irrelevant. Firstly his market value is double that and secondly Spurs have no intention of selling a player who is likely to be a mainstay in this years team. M'Vila was the most realistic. But Can is used to playing a defensive role as it simply continues what he did at Leverkeusen. It'll be interesting to see how Can, Henderson and Gerrard play together. Henderson will have the freedom but he needs to improve his finishing not to waste it.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Ha ha. I wish I was ITK mate.

    yes lallana is training again

    ReplyDelete
  106. Agree, a good teams needs a dedicated defensive midfielder. Some have 2 ..

    ReplyDelete
  107. B Rodgers should bring in E Capoue(24) Of Tottenham for £6-£8M , get him fully fit and injury free and we would have beast of a DM protecting the back four.

Last season he was not given the chance to play in his favourite and best position week in week out, B Rodgers should bring E Capoue to club to compete with S Gerrard for the DM Position.

As Capoue is better defensively than he is offensively and that is what we need, a defensive enforcer who will sacrifice himself , doing all the dirty work for the team and protect the back four very well.

A Song(25) is better offensively than he is defensively, he is like Y Toure, Moussa Sissoko, M Dembele and M Diame who are all better on ball than without it. Capoue is better without the ball

    ReplyDelete
  108. Not to mention him dragging his elbow down that players back at the World Cup over something innocuous and getting sent off. Had enough of mental characters after suarez

    ReplyDelete
  109. TBH defensive midfield can wait I'm only acknowledging the fact that it's still a weakness as for Can he looks like he enjoys bombing forward. We do need some one to sit & protect the back 4 & that player has to be quick & strong with discipline. Capoue is one of many who can play that role. You need to direct your post to Twistadee11 as he specified the fee, but in principle I agree with him!

    ReplyDelete
  110. Sell them Agger, and get Song on loan as part of the deal ..

    ReplyDelete
  111. Does it say anything about a striker...anything at all?

    ReplyDelete
  112. It is random. Those Ed guys are good and seem to be correct. But, most of the time, the posters are wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  113. no brainer if lucas goes

    ReplyDelete
  114. Why do you think Rodgers and Ayre have made a mistake that they are unwilling to admit to?

    ReplyDelete
  115. I wouldn't have him. He is a player with a lot of talent but a poor mentality. Often switches off.

Brendan could develop him as he has done well with other players, but Wenger is arguably the best in the league at doing that and he couldn't really crack Song.

Even in his final season when he played a big part in RVP having a brilliant season, he didn't attain the consistency of a real quality player.

  116. After his actions in the World Cup I say no thanks. Waiting for the next Suarez episode was stressful enough we don't need that string to continue.
