Liverpool are reportedly back on the trail of Dutch striker Klass Jan Huntelaar, a player heavily linked with the Reds during the summer 2012 transfer window.
The Reds were strongly linked with a loan move for Huntelaar during the short-lived reign of Roy Hodgson, but a deal could not be agreed at the time.
Speculation arose again during the summer of 2012, but on transfer deadline day, Brendan Rodgers specifically ruled out the possibility of signing the Dutch International.
This week, Dutch magazine Voetball international claims that:
* Liverpool have 'renewed interest' Huntelaar.
* The Reds see him as a possible replacement for Luis Suarez.
* The club is considering making an official offer.
Last year, Schalke General Manager Horst Heldt revealed that Huntelaar - nicknamed 'The Hunter' by his teammates - has a €20m buyout clause in his contract, and when asked this week about a potential transfer to Liverpool, Heldt noted:
"I've read that Liverpool are interested in Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, but LFC, Klaas-Jan and also his adviser have not contacted us. Plus, we have no interest in selling him"
Huntelaar is also aware of the Liverpool rumours, and speaking to reporters this week, he said:
"Regarding the rumours about Liverpool it would only be fair to speak to Schalke first. After the World Cup I am having a holiday. Then I will speak to them again"
In 2011/12, Huntelaar smashed in an incredible 58 goals/assists 48 games for Schalke, but since then, his goal rate has declined somewhat. Over the last two years, he's grabbed 30 goals in 56 appearances, which is still creditable, but at the age of 30, in no way is Huntelaar prolific enough to replace Suarez.
The very idea of that is idiotic in the extreme (!)
To be honest, I'd rather see LFC sign Huntelaar - who is proven quality - than Divock Origi, who is an untested gamble. That said, with Rickie Lambert already at Anfield, surely the veteran striker vacancy is already filled?
I don't see how there's room for both strikers in the squad, but with 91 goals in 139 games for Schalke (and 172 in 245 for Ajax), Huntelaar's knack for scoring goals cannot be denied.

sorry too old luis muriel for me
ReplyDeleteCan't see this one happening, rather have Jackson Martinez.
ReplyDeleteIt's easy to say you'd rather have this player, or that.. I'd rather have Zlatan, obviously! But that ain't gonna happen. As Jaimie said, there is no denying Huntelaars great goal scoring record. But personally I would not want him to be the man to replace Suarez.
ReplyDeleteI agree, the veteran striker role has already been filed. Personally I would like to see Mandzukic at LFC if we don't get Sanchez. I know BR rates him and has spoken highly of him in the past but it seems no one else does. Why would I go for him? Simple, he has all the attributes that you want from a number 9, power, pace, two good feet, great header of the ball, stamina, good finisher and surprisingly has a great work ethic. I think he was a bit unfortunate last season with injury and the fact that he didn't fit into Pep's passing style. He however still managed 23 goals in 31 (11 sub appearances) matches in all competitions. Add his two goals in the World Cup albeit against a poor Cameroon team and you have a goal scoring record better than Sanchez in fewer games. With Lewandowski's arrival at Bayern and his lack of game time under Pep, surely there wouldn't be a problem going in for him, especially if Lovren gets his move to LFC. That would surely help having a fellow countryman at the club. For me it's a no brainer. Arsenal were linked but it seems they are trying to pull a Tottenham on us with Sanchez. The other names that have been mentioned IMO really are't good enough.
ReplyDeleteHaha. That's pretty funny, I have to admit.

I don't know...maybe we have a patchwork of strikers until we can replace Suarez's quality and maybe Huntelaar is that guy for one year....maybe two. He has CL experience which Lambert does not. I think we get him if we don't get Sanchez in the Barca deal.
ReplyDeleteReally upset to see the club splashing £25M on Lazar Markovic. i keep watching videos to see what BR really sees him and he doesnt look any more than a £5M player. he does look OK but £25M your having a laugh. if he is worth £25M, Lallana is definately worth it, especially with some of the world-class goals i have seen Lallana score. i hope BR has spotted something we aint because this guy looks to be a major flop to a Kop who demand so much. if he is going to be a creative outlet and provide lots of assists then we might have a good player but £25M? surely Rodgers could have tryed for Roberto Firmino or Xherdan Shaqiri an or Andriy Yarmolenko for that price or possibly less. Instead of Markovic i would have liked Rodgers to buy Ross Barkley for £35M and sign from Newcastle Moussa Sissokho for £15M. Losing Suarez were going to need alot of players who have individual brilliance to replicate similar performances at Anfield. as part of the £75M Suarez deal i would take Pedro Rodriguez and Gerard Deleofeou for 25 and 10M. so £40M + Suarez for Pedro and Deleofeou. and then send Borini back to Sunderland in a straight swap for Adam Johnson. get Lovren for £20M as a transfer request should swing a deal into LFC's hands. buy Bertrand for £7M as back-up to Enrique.
ReplyDeleteAdam Lallana
Pedro Rodriguez
Gerard Delefeou
Ross Barkley
Moussa Sissokho
Daniel Sturridge
Raheem Sterling
Adam Johnson
these are all players with individual brilliance which they display for their clubs and with the right interchanging, Liverpool can lift the Champions League, PL, FA Cup and Carling Cup
Full Squad:
Goalkeepers: Pepe Reina, Simon Mingolet, Brad Jones
Full-backs: John Flanagan, Glen Johnson, Jose Enrique, Ryan Bertrand
Centre Backs: Dejan Lovren, Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger, Tiago Ilori, Kolo Toure, Andre Wisdom
Defensive Mid: Steven Gerrard, Moussa Sissokho
Centre Mid: Jordan Henderson, Emre Can, Ross Barkley
Attacking Midfielders: Adam Lallana, Phillipe Coutinho, Suso
Wingers:Adam Johnson, Raheem Sterling, Gerard Delefeou
Strikers: Daniel Sturridge, Pedro Rodriguez, Rickie Lambert
-------------------------------Mingolet
Flanagan----------Skrtel-----------Lovren--------Enrique
------------------Sissokho--------Henderson
-----------------------------Lallana
------------Sterling-----------------------Pedro
----------------------------Sturridge
subs on: Ross Barkley, Delefeou or Gerrard and Lambert or Johnson
Harsh, ouch! It's not his fault, BR surely understands that we want to see a world class replacement for Saurez not potential!
ReplyDeleteAdam Johnson ?, we just sold an Adam Johnson to West Ham, please not another.
ReplyDeleteMaybe at a reduced fee because there are few obvious Suarez replacements. If Huntelaar is in good physical condition and can give 2 solid years of service then he's a good option. 20 million euros seems a bit over the top, it might be Liverpool think they can get him for a knock-down price if the player is particularly keen on the move. He'll score goals but he's not the creator that Suarez is. We will also need some kind of player in an advanced role and to be honest I think we could get someone of a similar capability to Sanchez and not bother with Huntelaar at all. We need a player who can give at least 15 + 10 goals + assists.
ReplyDeleteNot really a credible link, markovic seems the next signing
ReplyDeleteNot really a credible link, markovic seems the next signing.
ReplyDeleteiI liked Origi in the world cup but we have good potential kids already who can be brought up. The squad is thin and need quality up and down the ranks. I hope BR gets it tight. I hope we get Arturo Vidal, He was a stud in the world cup.........does anyone REALLY know why Sanchez doesn't want to come to Anfield? Is it as simple as London vs Liverpool for him?
ReplyDelete100% correct on Vidal. An energizer bunny and a bit cranky as well Good for us if we can beat out Arsenal.
ReplyDeleteSad but accurate so far............Still have hope but us reds fans perhaps are naïve in thinking "why wouldn't the best want to come to Anfield?' We haven't convinced enough of the world yet and won't until we sign a Sanchez kind of player!
ReplyDeletereally good player bot NFW we get Barkley. Waste of ink and space .....
ReplyDeleteGod, as if a 30 year old is our Suarez replacement...
ReplyDeleteRemy better than Hunteler
ReplyDeleteI haven't see much of Markovic either but if Chelsea have first option to buy him back then maybe there is something our scouts know which we do not.
ReplyDeleteOrigi will apparently stay at Lille for a season long loan.
Is the Alexis deal as good as dead
ReplyDeleteI'm just pissed off that Utd are able to chase Rodriguez and Vidal, while we target Hunterlaar...
ReplyDeleteRodriguez has stated he does not want to play in the EPL and Vidal is going to cost £60m. Barcelona wanted Vidal and they failed to get him.
ReplyDeletePandle, I know my team. And its not rocket science, to see our teams strengths and weaknesses. We are weak defensively, DM. We are weak in centre mid, we were strong in attack. El Shaarwaay is a class quality player, who is 21 and will only get better, he had bad injury last year and that is why he was out for so long. But he is a player who would suit and do well for B Rodgers.
ReplyDeleteAll the centre midfielders i mentioned were class are much better than what we have, there is no way in hell we will get Ross Barkley or Pogba. Lovren(24) is not worth 20M but he is young, awesome defender and Southampton want as much as they can get for him. A Lallana(26) is a 15-18M player not 25m player. But we brought him to club for 25M
ReplyDeleteB Rodgers ship out the 11 players i said , who will bring in 40-45M to club and then B Rodgers needs to spend 60M on these 6 defensive players:
1: GK: K Navas(27) Of Levante for 5-8M or G Ochoa(28) On Free Transfer
2: CB: D Lovren(24) Of Southampton for 15-21M
3: CB: T Alderwield(24) Of A Madrid Or B Indi(22) Of Feyenoord(22) for 5-9M
4: RB: S Aurier(21) Of Toulouse for 6-8M
5: LB: B Davies(20) Of Swansea for 7-9M
6: DM: Y M'Vila(23) Of Rubin Kazan for 8-11M
B Rodgers needs to start bringing in class quality players better than what we have, not potential players. We need a world class midifielder in who can relieve S Gerrard(34) of his duties as S Gerrard is way past his best and should be used off the bench.
ReplyDeleteAll the top teams in the league are now trying to ease out the golden oldies out of their sides as class, quality young players is the way forward.
Origi(19) is good, but why not spend an extra 5-6M and bring in L Muriel(23) Of Udinese , we need players to be able to come straight in first team not to be brought and loaned out, thats waste of money.
If B Rodgers does not bring in a world class midfielder: T Alacantra(23) Of B Munich for 25-35M
B Rodgers should ship out L Leiva(27) to Napoli for 10-12M and Ship out J Allen(24) to Swansea or Everton for 8-10M
And he should bring in these three class Centre midfielders for 30M
1: M Sissoko(24) Of Newcastle for 8-14M
2: E Banega(26) Of Valencia for 5-8M
3: J De Guzman(26) Of Villareal for 6-8M
Those three centre midfielders would bring more class creativity goals mobility pace and quality than L Leiva and J Allen , while also being able to get stuck in and tackle in the centre of park.
Muriel is suspect and too much of a risk. Not called up to the Columbia WC squad for a reason. Origi seems sound investment, but I think we will not be playing in upfront too often, as he will cover the wide areas. Would Benzema and 1 upcoming younger striker. Personally I like the look of Aleksander Mitrovic.
ReplyDeleteSanchez? Plus we will not know each and every player LFC have on their shortlist and it is not like the club will make that shortlist available to the public eye.
ReplyDeleteWe have been linked hundreds of players.
The hundreds of players we've been linked with don't really compare with the hundreds of players Utd have been linked with. Sanchez has been the only big name we're linked with, and at the moment, there doesn't seem to be any big name alternative. There better bloody be, because we're better than this.
ReplyDeleteSadly no 1 player can replace Suarez for us. Not even Sanchez. We haven't made any top signings really and to be honest I'm not sure there's any out there to be made. I was very optimistic for the upcoming season suddenly ive dropped all my expectations because its setting out to be a disappointing one.
ReplyDeleteSanchez the only big name we have been linked with? over the last couple of days LFC have been linked with
ReplyDeleteGuillermo Ochoa, Serge Aurier, Dejan Lovren
Mauricio Isla, Xherdan Shaqiri, Mathieu Valbuena
Sami Khedira, Alexis Sanchez, Mario Balotelli
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar
and I am sure if you search the net you will find many others including James Rodriguez.
With imminent departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona, we'll be getting roughly around 65-80m (euro or pounds). With the transfer activity so far, I'm okay withe several signings as potential first team starters (Lallana) and some squad players or rotation like Lambert/Can. But with the rumours we are hearing that Liverpool are after Markovic, Origi etc, it has not impressed me at all.
ReplyDeleteBased on my opinion, I have some pointers as below:
No 1) Liverpool are now in the champions league group stage, why are we not after established players? Players like Di Maria, Lavezzi, Bony etc are better targets than Markovic. 20-25m for the Benfica wide man? Liverpool seem not to have learned their lessons especially on transfer activity. Just flash back 2002 and 2009.
No 2) What happen to the news on Shaqiri? He seems a better prospect than Markovic all day long. at 15-18m, that's a bargain. Deal collapsed?
No 3) I am very afraid that we are following in the footsteps of Tottenham like how they spend their Bale money last season.
No 4) Rodgers said he's looking for "quality" players who can add to the team and also who are hungry to play for the club. To me, the term "quality" to be used in football especially in signing a Attacking midfielder/winger or striker should be "proven, good scoring/assists records, has some experience playing for national team (no of caps), champions league experience and some trophies he has achieved". So, when will the "marquee" signing arrive? What do those players we are linked (etc Markovic, Origi) adds to the team? Well, it is purely for developing them and use them in squad competition for the new campaign.
No 5) Liverpool should play hard ball with Barcelona since Alexis Sanchez is not willing to join us. So in that case, 80m straight cash is the best deal for both clubs. Btw, whoever is not interested in joining us, go far away, who needs you? Liverpool is bigger than any individuals.
No 6) We are yet to sort out the full back situation. What on earth is the scouting department doing where we can get Serge Aurier as a right back for relatively less than 10m?! And for left back, we can go for Marcus Rojo, Daley Blind or even Ricardo Rodriguez. So much options out there but we seem to pay over the odds on some unproven players. Sad, but that's the truth.
No 7) Enough with English players, we have plenty. Just nice for the quota for squad registration for new season. We don't need to buy another English player again.
No 8) We finished 2nd last campaign, we should be looking to add more firepower than we have at the squad disposal currently. And what more, with Suarez leaving, we should use the money VERY WISELY and buy a "world class" player to replace him. Yes, it's a must.
No 9) Get Lovren deal done ASAP! But not for 25m. Southampton loves to hold us to ransom. 15-20m is a fair enough price to tempt him away from his current club. What more? He has handed in a "transfer request" and his "head is in Liverpool" already. A solid defender if we get him. A real leader and can sharpen up our weak link in defence.
No 10) We are Liverpool. We are in the Champions League, going for players like Hummels, Reus, Lucas Moura, Balotelli (why not?), Bony, Di Maria are exactly the signings we want to see. At least 1 of them (world class) in our team before the transfer deadline closes. This will make the fans happy and more importantly a force (team) to be reckoned with.
No 11) Last but not least, it's always exciting to hear some big names linked or even close to signing for Liverpool. We can't always believe the news until it's official (deal confirmed). But in one scenario. Ian Ayre really needs to get the job done by getting the player to sign for Liverpool. Else, here we go again. Miss out on important targets.
I hope we come back stronger and play better than last season. With or without Suarez, Liverpool will need to be challenging in all fronts next season. We go again.
Oh come on Logan. I'm talking about solid links, not random throw-arounds like Aurier and Valbuena and Khedira. Shaqiri may be good, but he's not a big name like Sanchez. Huntelaar is starting to enter the twilight of his career. Half the people on here don't even want Balotelli let alone rate him. A lot of people on this site I bet didn't even know Ochoa before the WC.
ReplyDeleteNow compare this to Rodriguez, Vidal and DiMaria to Man Utd. Chelsea have already signed effing Fabgreas and Costa.
The chances of UTD getting either Rodriguez or Vidal are next to nothing.
ReplyDeleteChelsea will always sign any player they want, this has been proven time and time again. Financially they will always have the upper hand whether we are linked with the same players as them or even make an offer to those players.
For God's sake Logan don't go off-topic again. I said the fact Utd won't get them is irrelevant. It's ambition.
ReplyDeleteWhere have I gone off topic. We are discussing the same thing.
ReplyDeleteYou are frustrating sometimes.
ReplyDelete"The chances of utd getting either Rod. or Vidal are next to nothing"- totally different story to what I'm talking about, as I specified earlier. We are not discussing the same thing. I'm talking about Utd's pure ambition, you're talking about if the 2 mentioned will be in utd shirts next season or not.
I am stating the obvious and how do you know LFC have or have not have not inquired for Vidal? We will not know.
ReplyDeleteTo suggest LFC do not have ambition without any concrete facts makes this whole argument pointless.
I certainly didn't see him against the yanks or Argentina! neither can i see him doing a great deal on a heavy pitch in Stoke in January. What on earth is BR thinking?
ReplyDeleteYou seem to be confusing Lucas with footballers. Huge mistake.
ReplyDeleteI live in Barcelona and know several Barcelona ticket holders. They all say the same thing - Alexis is just not interested in going to liverpool. When you look at the dreadful bunch of mediocrities BR is recruiting, I can't say I blame him. Simply awful and now this Portuguese joker too! He's not even Aspas standard.
ReplyDeletei think you are confusing him with Lukaku, who looked VERY good. Origi did precisely nothing against the USA and a little less than that against Argentina.
ReplyDeleteIn Brendan we trust mate. We made it as a team, well continue to improve as a team. Now it's not about replacing Suarez, it's about finding perfect partner for sturridge. You were probably one of the people thinking it's the end of the world when Torres left. No one is bigger than the club.
ReplyDelete
