Transfer Catastrophe? - LFC legend worried that BR 'might panic' and waste £80m on the wrong players. Carroll MK 2?

Speculation about Luis Suarez's future is set to reach boiling point over the next few days, and with Ian Ayre reportedly meeting with Barcelona today, the Uruguayan's time at Anfield may soon be up. The proposed transfer fee being bandied about is £80m, but if that comes to pass, Anfield legend Jan Molby is not convinced that Brendan Rodgers will spend the money wisely.

In his column for Eurosport this week, Molby revealed concerns about Liverpool's ability to replace Suarez effectively. He noted:

"He [Suarez] is too much trouble but...at the moment, you feel that even if Liverpool took £80 million, they might panic and do what they did with the Fernando Torres money.

"They need a bit more time to prepare themselves for the day Suarez is no longer there".

To be fair, Liverpool didn't completely waste the £50m Torres money. Part of the fee went towards signing Suarez, and if Rodgers signs a player on a similar level (in terms of ability) then that will be amazing.

However, given Rodgers suspect performance in the transfer market, and his pitiful 20% success rate (only two outright successes), there's a high probability that some of the fee from Suarez's transfer will be wasted.

Carroll is the possibility the worst panic buy in the history of the game (!), but despite Rodgers' errors of judgement in the transfer market, I can't see him ever making a catastrophic mistake on that kind of level.

Rodgers will hopefully learn from his past mistakes, and judging by the three signings so far this summer, he seems to be targeting the right kind of players.

Can the manager be trusted with £80m, though?

  1. There are two main differences here which are too easily ignored. First of all we sold Torres on or near deadline day and needed to conclude deals fast so there was no time for extensive negotiations. Secondly, FSG are no longer ignorant to the world of football and they money will not be spent by Kenny and Commoli. If we get 80 million for him I'd offer Monaco 40 million for Rodriguez, So'ton 20 for Lovren, Galatasaray 10 million for Muslera and keep 10 million aside in case it would take 50 million to sign Rodriguez :-)

  2. You know why i am concerned?
Allen, Alberto, Moses, Sakho, Cissokko, Borini, Kolo.
If given 80m he would buy: Balotelli for Striker, Bertrand for LB , etc
    thats y i am worried

  3. Its ok saying would he spend it wisely. BR has his hands tied as the top players in the world seem reluctant to come to Anfield

  4. My ideal buys would be:
    Sanchez 30m
    Markovic 25m
    Lovren 15m
    Aurier 8m

  5. Would love Sanchez and falcao not asking for much ;) hahaa would also love a top quality centre back .. But there isn't too many of them for sale

  6. Please, that panic Carroll signing only came about because Torres decided to be a t*** and wait until the last day of the transfer window to hand in that transfer request, so naturally, Liverpool had to absolutely scramble to find a replacement. Entirely different circumstances. We've got a whole transfer window on our side this time.

  7. Rodriguez won't come, he hates English football. His heart is set on RM.

  8. Here's what you need to remember. Without UCL, we were quite limited by who we were able to compete for. The Mkhirtyan and Willian misses reflect that. No UCL= B market. UCL= A market. You really think that Rodgers would go after cheap Kolo like signings and loans like Moses with our new advantageous position?

  9. Anfield Faithful9:26 am, July 02, 2014

Moses was on loan; cissokko on loan; Kolo was free; boring was cheap; sakho was one of the best defenders with good stats during world cup; Alberto is still young and one for the future. And Allen. .. well good point. So if you think about it br hasn't done too bad considering we had no champions league football and finishing 8th n 7th in Pl.

  10. With respect, this is such a false argument. Liverpool signed Suarez without CL football, plus Sturridge and Coutinho. Not being in the CL is no excuse for buying a series of dud players. Everton are not in the CL and look at their loan signings compared to LFC's.

as good as suarez is he needs to remember what happened torres ..lfc made him in to a priceless assest then he could not hack the guilt of leaving lfc..We are in a different buying shop window now as we can offer c.l ......take at look at squad when hodgson was here to now THANK YOU BRENDAN ....lallana sterling sturridge suarez coutinho lambert maybe shaqiri and sanchez to come all playing under one of the most tactically gifted managers the premiership has ever seen ......102 goals 1 home defeat just imagine where this squad will be in 2 or 3 transfer windows POETRY IN MOTION tra la la la

  12. With respect, I'm talking about established, proven talent, not players like Sturridge and Coutinho *once were* before Liverpool. Suarez was just one of those 1 in 10 signings you can make from our position that we were in. We were lucky that we didn't have strong competition from other clubs.

Now, Sturridge is a great player *now*, but dude, the jury was definitely out on him (including from people like you)! He was desperate to find a club to establish himself at, and he wasn't proven. Coutinho? He was very much the same. Now compare these guys to players like Sanchez and Mkhirtiyan. They were be no means marquee signings.

    ReplyDelete
  13. with respect (lol) , by UCL quality do you mean Lallana? Wouldnt u spend extra 10m and get a signing like Isco or Fabregas or Roderiguez

    ReplyDelete
  14. Buying sanchez for anything more than 22m will be waist of money
Exchanging LS for for Sanchez an taking anything less than 58m will be a big mess
Cause we are giving them the best goal machine in the world and cutting off their dead wood in the same time

    ReplyDelete
  15. The difference with the Torres deal was that it was right at the end of the transfer window, which always causes a bit of panic buying. If Suarez left soon, it would give us almost 2 months to find a replacement.
    I don't want to

  22. Love the way you say 'pitiful 20% success rate' with transfers as if that is completely definitive. That 20% is just your opinion on his transfers, and no offence intended, just stating a fact, but you just like the rest of us on here are no expert, if you were you'd be working in football not running a website (albeit for the most part a very well written & managed one). You're opinion is no more definitive than anyone else's commenting so don't try and pass it off as such.

  23. United have just signed Herrera and Shaw and they're in nothing at all

    ReplyDelete
  24. Because money talks my friend! I don't recall Liverpool offering massively inflated wages and transfer fees while they were in in the mid-table doldrums.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Selling Suarez, even for 80 million, is still not worth considering for LFC. You don't sell the most in form player in the world for a cut price 80 million. Break the record transfer fee and then let's talk. I seriously doubt that a 4 month ban from all football will stand after an appeals process. FIFA may think they are almighty and can impose whatever ban they like however Suarez is still technically a worker for the European Union and has some inalienable rights just like everyone else. I see the ban being reduced to two months just restricting him from games none of this "banned from all football activity" crap.

Let's be honest once Suarez comes back and starts banging in the goals, be that for Barcelona or Liverpool, people will eventually ignore the biting and go back to cheering his name. Whether that is right or wrong you can leave to the moralists to decide.

    ReplyDelete
  26. His heart can be set on whatever but it's the money that decides. Players talk all the time and then when they move it always happens to be to the club they wanted most of all.

    ReplyDelete
  27. And THAT is one advantage that we need to exploit.

    ReplyDelete
  28. In Rodgers I believe we are lucky to have a coach who, A) is aware of his own youth and inexperience (something we shouldn't forget), B) takes responsibility for his mistakes and those of the team and C) is prepared to adapt and learn from those mistakes. Evidence for that can be seen in the evolution of Liverpool's playing style since he became boss. Nobody would deny that errors have been made in the transfer market and that success in that area has been erratic. There's one hell of a deviation between say, Sturridge and Aspas. Generally Rodgers has had a pretty rigid 'blueprint' for transfers; young, versatile, players with a willingness to improve and a hunger for success. While I believe this is the right idea, the signing of Lambert is further evidence that Rodger's is learning fast. I don't expect every single transfer to be an outright, instant success, but with the extra financial backing this summer the players we seem to be after are an extra step up in reputation (and price) and I believe they are the right kind of players to take the club forward. Getting business done early is absolutely key to ensuring that Carroll-esque catastrophes are not repeated.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I mean, sure, we overpaid for Carroll, Henderson and Downing, but the latter two are nothing compared to 30 million for an 18 year old left back.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Haha, it's ironic you said that considering I just offered the same kind of argument to one of your comments above.

What you say is true, but in saying that, RM pay all of their players very handsomely. If he had to choose between Real Madrid, and an English club paying slightly higher wages, he'd still choose RM without a doubt.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yep, it's no holds barred on transfer spending for Barca now their ban is suspended pending appeal. What a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree. I think that ultimately the biggest example of Rodgers' great adaptability and willingness to learn is without a doubt the change of our playing style, and I'm actually glad it's changed. The football they play now is just so much more fun to watch than tiki-taka. I think it has it's foundations in tiki taka, but it's been evolutionised based on the individual strengths of our own players.

  33. Molby reveals his general ignorance of what goes on at Liverpool when he says Liverpool might need time to prepare for Suarez leaving. On what planet have the club not been preparing for this for at least the last 2 years? There is no the slightest doubt in my mind that Rodgers knows precisely who he would replace Suarez with and what he wants to do with the money. The only problem is confirming that those players want to come here and can be bought from their respective clubs.

Of course there is a risk that any players bought with the money could be duds. I've been arguing this precise problem every time we discuss the Suarez issue. Suarez is a known entity, a guaranteed goal scorer who doesn't get inured, gives 100% and is already confirmed as a success for Liverpool in the premier league. Every other player out there we might replace him with is not, it doesn't matter who they are. Even the most promising player that everyone at first agrees would be a perfect fit might not work out. If we sell Suarez we know what we're losing, but we absolutely don't know what we're getting in return. The buying club in this instance are most certainly getting the better deal, no matter how much money is involved. Maybe at 100 million pounds that would be less likely, but in truth it doesn't matter how much money we get, it's still a tough job to spend that money well and get players in who will lift us to the next level.

I still think selling Suarez is a 50/50 call right now. It all comes down to who Rodgers has in mind to replace him. If we can get that player, if he wants to come here, if he is keen to adapt to our way of playing and the team philosophy then maybe, only maybe, will selling Suarez work out as a good deal for us. Any talk of selling Suarez without at least suggesting who we could get to replace him is a very incomplete discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Will Barcelona be paying the whole transfer fee upfront though? If it is £80 million then I highly doubt that would be the case.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I don't think Carroll was a panic buy. I think Comolli and Dalglish was under the impression that they knew exactly what they were doing and that Carroll would be a success. They would have had their eye on him for a while and Torres had made it clear to the club that he wanted to leave before that transfer window. There are no excuses for what happened, it was a thought-out and considered transfer, it's just that it was a mistake. They believed he was a better player than he turned out to be.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Put it this way. Rodgers paid 25 million because he personally finds a lot of qualities in him which he finds would be very beneficial to the club. I trust Rdogers' judgement ahead of ours in that regard. Lallana is a lot more proven than Sturridge and Coutinho were. Both were struggling to find a starting spot in their team. Yes, okay, Lallana was at Southampton, but a lot of people have already recognised his ability.

Now, Let's get real. We're not going to go after every bloody continental league superstar. We couldn't manage that . But our pursuit of Sanchez does prove however that we are willing to snare at least a couple.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Also, I think Rodgers knows that we were never really going to get Fabregas, and we're NEVER going to get Rodriguez. Isco...is he even on the market? Fabregas is just money hungry, he's already achieved everything in the game. The fact he went to a club he hates proves that.

    ReplyDelete
  38. What do you think Fabregas is earning a week at Chelsea?

    ReplyDelete
  39. I suspect the first thing out of Ayre's mouth is that Barca be willing to spend the full amount specified in the contract or the talks simply stop right now and they forget about it. This is a no-brainer, we're not selling for one penny less than what we have to, and the reality is that we can even ask for more. Although they are in a position of power in knowing they can always trigger a contractual clause it's Liverpool who can say either pay up or get out. If Sanchez becomes part of the deal then we are in an even better position because we can simply choose to disagree with their valuation of him. There is no way I can see Liverpool accepting anything less than the full amount, all upfront, all in cold hard cash, OR with a cut-price Sanchez deal included. If Barca can't do either of those options then they can get bent, we'll wear the suspension and just keep going. Suarez will explode when he finally gets back on the pitch and will probably score another 30 goals.

    ReplyDelete
  40. It was a panic transfer fee though. You think they planned on spending 37 million? You reckon that, hypothetically, they would have forked up that kind of money for Carroll at the start of the window? They probably would have viewed it as a sign of '**** off' from Newcastle, and moved on. Newcastle took very good advantage of our desperate situation.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Exactly. Fabregas put his hand up for the highest bidder. He said a couple of years ago, 'If I ever play for Chelsea, you have permission to kill me'. Not only that, he's publicly attacked Mourinho a number of times. Yet, as soon as the $$ signs appeared in front of him, he was over there in a heartbeat.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Probably half of what he will be paid

    ReplyDelete
  43. Sorry, I should have said that I meant more the fee. I agree Carroll had been targeted for a little while. Had West Ham not known we had just got £50 mil, and were seriously in need of a striker, we could/would have got him cheaper.

    ReplyDelete
  44. If he does stay, I'm just worried about what's going to happen to us in those first 10 games...

    ReplyDelete
  45. Or bite someone - the oposing manager, the ref or a passing ball girl perhaps

    ReplyDelete
  46. Suarez had just bitten someone and we were not that long out of CL. He was looking for a step up and there were not that many teams willing to touch him. Suarez is the exception that proves the rule. One reason he wanted to leave was lack of CL.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Not only are Suarez's sponsors pulling out, some of LFC's sponsor have also jumped on the bandwagon. Keeping Suarez after the latest biting incident could be financially damaging to the LFC. I do not see Suarez playing another game for LFC.

  54. Same thing that happened last season?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Well that was 6 games. Just because we went well it doesn't mean it will happen again. We've become one of the hunted.

    ReplyDelete
  56. One of the things that I love about BR is his ability to adapt. He has adapted his tactics, the team and formations. This is important.

I guarantee you that BR has learned a lot from the Chelsea defeat at Anfield. I don’t think next season he will be making the same mistake.

Also, let’s not forget that it was not BR who signed Carroll. BR would never waste so much money on a player like that who does not fit our style.

I think that it’s time for Suarez to go. If we do not get Sanchez as part of the deal then we certainly need to use that money and spend big on a striker. Funny thing is that there is not many World Class strikers around, and most top ones are unavailable.

If we get £80M for Suarez who could we replace him with?

    - Jackson Martinez?

    - Luis Muriel?

    - Falcao?

    - Ballotelli?

    - Volland?

My fear is that BR will use that money and spend on inside forwards/wingers like Shaqiri and Firmino, although they are excellent
additions we cannot trust Sturridge to stay fit for the whole season and Borini is not IMO an adequate replacement.

We need a dedicated striker to high quality.

Hopefully BR will sign a top class striker.

Talking about inside forwards and wingers, that James Rodriguez is a beast of a player.

Maybe a cheeky bid for him?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Again with this 20% success rate statement. That is nothing but your own personal opinion and shouldn't be reported as fact. Torres was also sold in January when the window is shorter and the club was in complete disarray. We're far better equipped now to bring in top players due to the fact our club is stable from boardroom to boot-room and we're back in the champions league

    ReplyDelete
  58. I also forgot to add: thousands of players, yes, but out of those thousands, how many are actually top tier and proven? Seriously, the rest of the bunch amongst those thousands just represent a massive gamble, and how many players in those thousands are actually worthy candidates?, This is exactly the situation which Rodgers was caught in to: taking a gamble on 'the rest'. It paid off for Everton, and didn't pay off for Liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  59. The only player Everton got that we may have needed was Delfuanso or however you spell it. That would have been much better than Moses. Other than that the two things are not comparable because our needs were different.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I think JK's argument about Rodgers' transfer success is massively flawed, and here's why.

Imagine you're a show dog owner, and you compete in show dog tournaments. You've also got limited funds. You can therefore only really afford dogs which which are less properly bred, and therefore more prone to being antisocial and etc, meaning you've got to do your best to pick a diamond from the rough (i.e. the litter). This is obviously more of a gamble right? Now sometimes, you might have some spare funds that can afford you a very well bred dog, however, it's hard to compete with more successful owners, because they also have entry to an exclusive competition which pays royalties to the breeder of the winning dog, giving more incentive to sell to successful owners.

Based on this, it'd be easy to see why calling the poorer owner a bad talent finder would be unfair, wouldn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  61. I think he more so means that Everton were a lot more successful at finding the right players for their own team, from the same market that we were tapping into to satisfy our own specific needs. But I disagree with his whole argument.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'm pretty sure most fans would agree that a loan signing for Lukaku would've been infinitely preferable to the disaster that is Iago Aspas. Plus, it would've saved LFC a shedload of money.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I reckon that after the success of our strike partnership last year, and the limitations chelsea suffered without any standout striker, it will surely make Rodgers know how important it is.

    ReplyDelete
  64. It's *obviously* my own personal opinion, and I'm not 'reporting' it as fact. That is something you are projecting. This is basically an opinion site - why should I have to put 'IMO' every third word? Why don't you - and others - stop focusing on totally irrelevant things and just stick to the football issues? If you can't tell that stuff written on an opinion site is opinion, then that's your issue, not mine.

This makes me so sad. We have to bring in top world class players. Not 1 or 2 but many. When will we take the next step. We need to change gears and jump from the league of Dortmund and Athletico to Chelsea, ManC, ManU, Juve and Arsenl

In not just worried about the money being wasted I'm not convinced the men in suits are competent at doing a good deal in the first place. I won't be surprised if we sell cheap. Getting Sanchez would be important and lfc have a bargaining point with barca wanting Suarez. But I bet they f*** it up. So I won't be surprised if we don't get him but sell to barca anyway and it still transpires Suarez went cheap and mufc get Sanchez cheap.

People feel compelled to make note that it is just opinion as otherwise some (naive perhaps) people may take it as a standard or fact. It seems to annoy Jaimie but I for one feel that if repetition is used on one side it will doubtlessly be used on the other.

  78. True. But again would he have gotten games? Would he have been happy with that? Aspas was signed for his supposed versatility Lukaku is an out and out striker (Despite one game in which Martinez saw a weakness and exploited it). So would he have wanted to join to be 3rd choice? Would Chelsea have wanted to loan a player to a potential rival if they were not trying to get him off their books (like Moses). As for shed load, well only those that know the real cost of wages and such know that.

It's the position point that is the biggest though. Aspas was meant to be third choice striker first/second choice forward. Lukaku could not have filled that role. Oh and for evidence of this intention look at where he actually played for us. We agree he was a disaster.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Ah yes, and you are the arbiter of what constitutes 'flawed opinion'. If my opinions 'stick in the craw' then that's just tough luck, and not my problem.

See top to bottom.. We need to stay in cul again next year withut Suarez to get above Arsenal. At this moment, whole world thinks we are nothing without suarez

    ReplyDelete
  85. If BR still wants to buy Bertrand, then I dont think he is learning fast. People havent realized one of the reasons why Torres and Suarez decided to leave was because LFC didnt match their ambitions. We dont have enough good players in the team. Time and time again, from the 80s. Remember how emotional Suarez was at end of the Crystal Palace game? We cant match his ambition. Glen Johnson was responsible for the goals and it showed we need a top RB. Yet BR continues to overspend and go after average players. He still makes wrong decisions. Why spend 10M on Origi when we need every cent to get top players. Bertrand, Vorm, Caulker, Richards are some of the names we are linked with. See the players Martinez and Koeman will bring to their respective teams. Time will be the best judge of BR transfer performance.

  92. WHen I read ur argument I dont know whether to laugh or cry. This is the same thing we've been hearing and BR wants to sign Bertrand of all LBs. How long will you guys back BR's dismal transfer performance when we dont have buckets of cash. He wasted cash on Alberto and never used him. Wasted on Aspas, Borini etc. Time will tell. There are so many skillful and talented players out there for cheap. Southampton will get Duran Tadic for 9M to replace Lallana. Everton will do great with little money they have, even Swansea. Sometimes I really feel money in LFC hands is more of a curse than blessing. From the 80s we have never been good in transfer dealings. Thought BR would have been better, but I'm not impressed. If we had thrown 25M at Firmino, I wonder would have been the outcome BR is a young manager and still learning a lot. I'm very concerned if he is given a lot of money honestly He said he knew Moses well from his time at CFC and see what Moses offered us.

  93. Yep, likewise. My point is you can't judge his ability in the top shelf market when he's only had the bottom shelf to work with so far. It's not a good idea to use rumours as fact to back up your argument either...

  95. Well firstly a season or two in the CL would help to actually believe that it was bad judgement entirely and not circumstance. But considering players like Mhkitarian and Willain would have improved our overall team markedly not to mention Diago Costa would have definitely made us better it is hard to say it was all BR's fault. He wanted these players no? We may be linked with Bertran but i he was first choice why would he not be our player by now? Or at least a link? Is it not more likely that one or two of our preferred LB's is still playing in the WC? Perhaps why the lack of talk on the subject?

Yes Aspas was a waste and Alberto is looking more like that too but look at comments when such players were signed, they were always meant to be back ups. Players like Moses and Sissokho were third choice players signed on loan rather than getting a player we were not convinced of permanently.

Am I absolutely convinced that he will do better in better circumstances? No. But as these times have changed then we can see for sure.

  98. Can someone please explain to me how this transfer window business works? How was it possible to get Lambert to put pen to paper before the window had even opened?

  99. It has to be a chimp in a three piece suite or Mario doesn't want to have anything to do with it. His name will be Giacomo and all money matters will go through him.

  100. Lambert is like Chuck Norris: the rules do not apply...

  101. I believe you can "sign" players pretty much whenever you want, but it cannot be officially completed until the next transfer window opens. Hense "deal in principle" like what was reported by the Can transfer.
