Kicked Out? 'Excellent' €15m LFC star leaves US tour after training alone. Anfield exit?

Is Daniel Agger on his way out of Liverpool? The signing of Dejan Lovren has slammed another nail into the Dane's coffin, and events today suggest that Agger could be the next player to leave Anfield

According to Sky Sports:

* 'Excellent' Agger has left Liverpool's tour of the USA and 'returned to the UK'.

* The official reason appears to be a 'slight injury' picked up on the tour.

So - Agger picks up an injury and leaves the tour just as Lovren signs for the club?

That seems a little too convenient to me, and reading between the lines, it's possible that Agger has returned to the UK to look for another club/enter talks with interested clubs.

Indeed, reports today are once again linking the defender with a move to Barcelona, with Spanish newspaper Sport claiming the Catalan club is considering a new €15m bid.

Rodgers restricted Agger to just 23 appearances last season, and on Monday, he made it clear that being a bit-part player this season is not an option:

"It is no secret that I had problems last season and I am considering things. How things turned out last season is not acceptable for me"

With Lovren in the squad, the writing is on the wall for Agger, and he must surely see that. The Croatian is the most expensive defender in LFC's history, and he isn't going to be sitting on the bench.

Lovren will be first-choice centre-back, with Martin Skrtel his most probable defensive partner. There's also a chance for Mamadou Sakho to stake a claim, but after his heroics last season, Skrtel deserves to keep his place.

On a related note: Agger was forced to train alone last Monday (22nd July), again, as a result of an alleged 'slight injury'. That doesn't really make sense, though, as he featured in Liverpool's defeat to Roma a couple of days later.

The training incident came just a day after Agger made his latest public threat about 'considering' his future, so it's conceivable that Rodgers punished the defender for speaking out of turn.

Whatever the reason, I'd be very surprised to see Agger in Liverpool's squad at the end of August.

  1. I think we'd all be surprised to see Agger with Liverpool at the start of the season. For his sake, I hope he gets his move to Barcelona because he has been a loyal servant to Liverpool during his time with us. If it hadn't been for injuries he could have had a magnificent Liverpool career but we were limited to short spells of good play from him followed by the inevitable injury. I wish him luck.

  2. End of an era for our dagger.
Will be fondly remembered but Lovren is a better defender as as if not more adept at carrying the ball out

  3. i think agger will be sold any team would be lucky to get him a great player in my opinion its sahko i think should be sold pure useless

  4. I'll be very surprised if he gets a move to Barcelona. He is too injury prone, and Liverpool FC has been very good to him during his long term injuries and it is very hard to understand why he is not ready to knuckle down and fight for his place.

  5. I agree. Rodgers will not sell Sahko because he brought him into the club. I just hope Agger doesn't leave.

  6. i think when aggers not been injured he has given his all 100% committed but when he is not wanted after all he has given to liverpool then why even try when your best doesnt seem good enough

  7. whoa jamie u didn't take long with that at all good article btw

  8. It'll be a bit sad to see Agger go, he's the kind of guy you just can't help liking and he seems to really love being a part of LFC, but he's clearly the most likely player to leave. Skrtel, Sakho and Lovren will fill the two main CB positions and Agger would be, as he said recently, the club's "third choice". He's too good for that and we should be able to find a club willing to snap him up. It is indeed the end of an era. Good luck to him.

  9. Likely a goner. As I have said before, he looks skinny, gets bullied a bit on set pieces BUT he still flattened Torres on his first game at Anfield so he will always be in my heart for that very moment....good lucky Danno.."

  10. BR will have to reset all of our England player after Hodgesons work over the summer (passing isn't as crisp). Think Skrtel was the only one that looked like the player from last season (MOM in my eyes). Manquillo or anyone for that matter can't come quick enough.

Really tepid performance, hope next game we look sharper and inventive in passing. Bit worried with the start we got in the new season, maybe a marquee signing will get the team buzzing....Reus maybe?

  11. Does four own goals and some rather shaky defensive displays (including to two defensive errors that led directly to two goals) really surmount to heroics last season? That said, I anticipate Liverpool's defensive solidity will improve this year due to a slightly less aggressive attacking approach and greater overall unity and Maetin and Seba have both looked rather impressive in the last two games (all be it in pre-season).

  12. Makes sense to move him on. To be honest all the Benitez era players have gone as far as the can with us I think. Skrtel maybe done enough to keep but agger, Johnson, Lucas and reina are no longer value for money for the club. Massive wages minimum impact.

  13. Yes, but SAS now apparently means Sturridge and Sterling.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'll be glad to see the back of Reina.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Why does he have a nice ar5e?

    ReplyDelete
  16. No sentiments to players. Stay and fight for your place or move on..
15mil is a decent sum for a player who spends a lot of time on the doctors bed.

  17. Love skrtel but he clearly peaked last season. Most own goals in a season ever?!?! Everyone, including himself, needs to reevaluate how good he can be for us this season. Lovren and Sakho are our starting pairing (unless BR decide des to play three at the back). Feels free to disagree but I can guarantee they we be stalwarts for us for years to come. Prepare to be surprised Sakho doubters

  18. Daniel Agger has been a loyal servant to the club but if he wants to leave to play more regularly then I am fine with that. He will always hold a special place in the hearts of LFC fans but there is no room for sympathy when you are challenging for titles.

Lovren will be massive for Liverpool however! I thought individually he was the best CB in the EPL last year but didn't get the recognition he deserved because he played for Southampton. If we can get LB sorted out and then bring in one more striker then we will be looking great for next season.

  19. When he had been fit, DAgger have 110% for the club, but he hardly had been full fit for 5 matches at stress; which is not acceptable to most Managers because they like a settled pair of CB & maneuver around the attacking half. May be at 30, it's better for both LFC en-cashing still a brilliant CB when fit; at the same time, Agger might just find the La Liga "soft" enough to remain healthy for longer period. At full fitness, he 'll be the stand out defender in Barca, who recently has a desperate acquisition of France outcast Jeremi Metheu for 16mn.

So, what next for us? Remy saved us around 10mn, Borini might still leave albeit in loan, Pepe, Agger, Lucas, Aassaidi & Toure should bring 35mn+ - go for one of Rues, Vidal or both? I don't know BR's pocket depth, only realize that unless we keep MU out of CL this year as well (Other 3 are certain, I guess), we might not return there in foreseeable future & worst 'll be one by one departure of Sturridge, Sterling, Markovic, Sakho, Lovren & so on.

  20. he has YNWA tattooed on his knuckles. he definitely loves the club.

I think it will be a massive shame to see him leave, injuries taken into account I think I'd still rather see agger/lovren or skrtel/lovren than sakho and either.

I still think sakho has his uses, but he just seems so clumsy on the ball half the time. but I shall wait and see how he is this season as he's had a season to settle. hopefully we'll see a good improvement.

  21. LFC Fan,

Ricardo Rodriguez. =. Left back solution
Arturo Vidal =. Midfield ball winning animal will also help offensive pressure and give our D some cover as a result
Marco Reus. = Missing offensive piece for a long time to come

Agree with selling all the stiffs you mentioned and add Coates and Johnson. Should generate plenty of cash to offset against even the most expensive one of the above.

  22. Something for you to chew on?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Don't count on it with Sakho. It's obvious that he just doesn't have the nerves or the intelligence to defend at the highest level. There is only so much you can do with strength and looking mean. What kills me is that Agger, as JK points out, only played a limited amount of games last season so he can hardly be to blame for our poor defensive record. The season before that, he was almost an ever present and we did a lot better. Of course then we also head Carragher and Reina and not pretenders like Sakho and Mignolet.

    ReplyDelete
  24. So me space has to be made in central defence now, and Agger seems like the most likely one to leave. Lets hope we can get a decent fee for him, and no loan deals.
    Thanks for the memories Agger!

    ReplyDelete
  25. i dont know when it happened but agger has lost the ability to keep goal side of his marker on highballs into the box,It never happened early in his career but for some reason now he is always out of position body wise on set pieces.

    ReplyDelete
  26. if we get 35m for that shower of crap ill be amazed

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ah yes, all hail king Sakho!...

    ...

    ReplyDelete
  28. i hope your right i really want sako to prove me wrong but i cant help thinking bambi on ice when i see him

    ReplyDelete
  29. and cant defend set pieces

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yeah. The number of times he gets beaten in the air is astounding. I will always remember him for his long range goals and his love for the club but the time has come. Agger is a relic of the Benitez era and now he should leave.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Rodgers can say that he doesn't need to replace Suarez all he wants but it's rubbish. Sure, others can score goals too and reducing the amount of goals conceded will help too but Suarez brought more to the team than goals and assists. He is the type of player who can turn a game around. Who can make something out of nothing with a simple act of brilliance. Without him, we have no more brilliant players in our team. The players we've bought are talented and solid professionals but none of them strikes me as the type of player who can do brilliant things

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think time is up for Agger, his performance levels in recent years have left alot to be desired. He could have become one of the best in the world but he has stalled like Lucas.

It does help that he is very injury prone but I think it's best if he goes for a different challenge.

    ReplyDelete
  33. dream on this is liverpool we will probably loan him out and pay half his wages

    ReplyDelete
  34. What is with that? Why do they always just loan them out...

    ReplyDelete
  35. Please dont tell me B R wants a seriosly injured for months J Rodrigues from Southampton - = THIS IS LAUGHABLE

    ReplyDelete
  36. We need 2 new strikers to replace REMY AND BORINI AND DESPITE WHAT B R SAYS WE NEED THEM DOUBLE QUICK or Season over by October

    ReplyDelete
  37. THIS IS LIVERPOOL ..remember common sense goes out the window when we deal with transfers

    ReplyDelete
  38. because no one at the club has any business acumen when it comes to transfer negotiating thats why we cant shift 45 grand a week assadi to stoke who is handing out these type wages to these type of players should be sacked.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Puzzling to me overall how fans, generally speaking, seem to be ok if he leaves.

The team seems to feel ok if he leaves.

And the one team he's been linked with (yet again) is arguably one of the top 5 most talented teams in the world.

What are we missing that Barca is seeing?

    ReplyDelete
  40. i dont know what we are missing but i know agger is missing his man and ball on set pieces

    ReplyDelete
  41. As much as we all like him, we mustn't forget his injury record and his positional errors. Hope he does well wherever he ends up.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Barcelona can't buy defenders...... They only know how to buy forwards. Hope all the best to Dagger in Barcelona!

    ReplyDelete
  43. The surprise might just be him leaving

    ReplyDelete
  44. Seeing people call for Reus, Vidal etc is so annoying... They are not coming!!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. if sahko starts we dont win anything this season, i've watched him play and nothin convinces me about him as gilstrap said bambi on ice ha good one..

    ReplyDelete
  46. true. how bout pjanic for a central midfield role? he is unlikely to cost twice the earth...

    ReplyDelete
  47. i dont think we're that stupid. he wont be able to play till october.

    ReplyDelete
  48. off topic:
Ferdinand: what an absolute tw*t. Acting like a spoiled princess already at QPR.

    ReplyDelete
  49. they both look thrilled...

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yes we need to replace somebody who wasn't even here

    ReplyDelete
  51. Couldn't agree more. It's almost as annoying as the people who say we could've got rakitic for 16 mil or kroos for 22mil... No we couldn't!!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. He's looked good every time I've seen him play

    ReplyDelete
  53. Shame on you Rodgers for stripping Southampton off their top players. If Southampton sell Rodriguez to Liverpool, every Saints season ticket holder should demand their money back or at the very least become automatic Liverpool season ticket holders.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think he should be sold, I think he needs a new challenge and a new start. He has been brilliant for us since Rafa bought him. I wish him luck wherever he ends up.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Pepe 10m, Agger 12, Lukas 8, Assaidi 2, Toure 2. That-s 34, and without any wishful thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Mate, Barca don't care whether a player is good at defending, they just want him to be good on the ball which Agger is. That's why they have pique and wanted David Luiz,m

    ReplyDelete
  57. What I find ironic is that the happy news, as in we've signed a top top defender, only features as a footnote in a negative story. Why not write a happy story about the Lovren signing and conclude with the news of Agger and if the two may be related?

    ReplyDelete
  58. He'll most probably buy a million of his own shirts with his astronomic wages.

    ReplyDelete
  59. pepe won't get anywhere near 10 Assaidi already at 4.5-7m you forgot Coates

    ReplyDelete
  60. It is going to end in tears for some...

    ReplyDelete
  61. I am with you all the way mate!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I only wrote prices for those listed by lfcfan. Agger costs more, so does Assaidi as you say so Pepe might go for less to prove our shower of crap worth 35 mil.

    ReplyDelete
  63. That's the JK way happy subjects bore him!
We need Rojo/Rodriguez for LB and Reus/Vidal in MF
Falcao is reportedly onthe move for c40m that would be nice
    Enough Saints players already.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I don't think that mentioning good players like Vidal or Reus is allowed in this site...

    ReplyDelete
  65. The Agger story is not 'negative' - it's just another development at LFC, which interests me more (at this stage) than Liverpool signing Lovren.

Plus, I've posted several articles about Lovren recently (in which I outline my happiness with the proposed deal), and don't feel like repeating myself.

There are a million sites posting Lovren stories at the moment; there's no need for me to do the same.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Nobody will pay £10 million for Reina when he is one of the best paid GK's in the world.

He either needs to take a pay cut or LFC need to let him go for free and pay out the remainder of his contract. He will then have no option but to take a pay cut if another club offers him a contract. Swallow your pride Reina.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Well mentioning the title wasn't last season either...

    ReplyDelete
  68. No it's not negative, just a little sad to lose a decent guy

    ReplyDelete
  69. I just wish he leaves already, it's becoming frustrating. Joe Cole and Aquilani is enough for two decades...

    ReplyDelete
  70. Nor will it be mentioning it this season.. Guess who will be doing it every time he visits the site...

    ReplyDelete
  71. Agreed. LFC will never win the title with Sakho and Mignolet as first-choice players (IMHO).

    ReplyDelete
  72. When last did we win the title? What does it make all the other players that were here before Sakho and Mignolet?

    ReplyDelete
  73. Just read that he Assaidi wants 45 000 instead of 30 000 offered so we will have to accept price decrease to offload him.. Damn, what is it with this club and players we are selling- no matter how good or bad they are we sell for less or keep on paying them for nothing..

    ReplyDelete
  74. Yet another totally irrelevant tangent.

    ReplyDelete
  75. It would be very satisfying if we do win the league under Rodgers and with all the 'flops' he has signed.

    Fingers crossed.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Does H stand for humble or honest?

    ReplyDelete
  77. I think Brendan Rodgers might just take a chance with Peterson in the league cup games. We have acquired some offensive options for this season. Apart from Lambert and Sturridge we also have Marcovic, Sterling, Coutinho, Lalana and Ibe who can all play in attacking midfield positions, even fill in as the number 10. For defensive midfield we have Gerrard, Henderson, Allen, Lucas and Can so maybe we're not as strapped as we would like to think. No room for Borini in there, good lad but he should see that there really isn't a plan for him at Liverpool any more. We could do with the cash to add a couple of top players.

    ReplyDelete
  78. What about Borini and maybe Robinson and Kelly.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Just referring to what gilstrap called shower of crap.

    ReplyDelete
  80. We can kid ourselves all we like but the gap betwwen Suarez and Borini is unbelevable - we must sell Borini this week - he is never going to make it and you know it. P S Can anyone tell me why we have to find premier league strikers - when England failed to win a single game in the World Cup ??

    ReplyDelete
  81. ENGLAND'S WC HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH LIVERPOOL, AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH EPL PLAYERS. IT HAS TO DO WITH HODGSONS AND ERIKSENS OF THE WORLD.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Had to google it. Good one... Poll for the last season is not happening?

    ReplyDelete
  83. I keep meaning to get around to it. I'll try and post it soon.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Already forgot our best player..

    ReplyDelete
  85. He admitted that he didn't really want to leave utd. So honesty is a bad thing? The no. 5 thing is to do with his business interests such as his media company and clothing label. Since they feature the no 5 as a logo like the cap he's wearing it makes prudent business sense that he also wears that number whilst playing.
I'm sure the player who wore the number prior to him will of been suitably looked after. Don't let the utd bias colour your entire view!
