With superb victories over Australia and Spain, Chile - along with Costa Rica - are one of the World Cup's surprise teams, and with the Reds' interest in Alexis Sanchez already well established, it seems that Brendan Rodgers is also interested in another of Chile's exciting stars.
According to reports today:
* Liverpool and Arsenal are preparing to bid for right-back Mauricio Isla.
* Brendan Rodgers sees the Juve star as a replacement for Glen Johnson.
Liverpool's interest in Isla is long-standing, and prior to his Juve move in 2012, his Agent - Leo Rodriguez - told BK Sport:
"He [Isla] is being tracked by Liverpool and other Italian clubs like Juventus and Roma. I'm not sure that these clubs have already initiated contact"
£15m-rated Isla can play left/right back, central midfield, or on the wing, and that versatility is hugely attractive to Rodgers, who clearly values multi-positional players over specialists.
When asked this week about his future, Isla made it clear that he's happy in Italy. He told reporters:
""Will I stay at Juventus? I know that all the fans support me. Everything will depend on the coach. I have learned from many players at Juventus and will continue to work."
Isla may be versatile, but his injury history is (arguably) a concern:
* In 2012, the Chilean suffered a cruciate ligament injury, which kept him out of action for 208 days.
* Since returning to full fitness, he's suffered a further four injuries, which probably explains why he's only made 41 appearances for Juve in the last two seasons.
* According to reports in Chile today, Isla suffered yet another injury during the Spain game, and is not expected to be fit for Monday's match with the Netherlands.
If it was down to me, I'd make it club policy to avoid signing any player with a cruciate ligament injury in their past. It's one of the worst injuries a footballer can suffer, and players never seem to recapture their best form after recovery. Just ask Lucas Leiva.
If Isla is genuine option, then the club might as well just sign Micah Richards, who also suffered a cruciate ligament earlier in his career. What difference does it make? Either player is a risk, but Richards is 50% cheaper.
Of course, there's always the possibility that Isla may buck the trend, and go on to remain injury free for the rest of his career, in which case, this could be a good deal for Liverpool.
Perhaps Rodgers is planning a double swoop on Chile. After all, Liverpool reportedly put in a £26m bid for Alexis Sanchez this week...

Yip, we need a CB who can command and conquer. Skrtel does not fall under this category.
ReplyDeleteAgree on the ACL/PCL recommendation. It's a career killer unless it happened in your teens and you were allowed a full recovery.
ReplyDeleteAgree on Sakho. He has been a stone wall for France. I have also decided Shaqiri has had his 15 minutes. No way I want that little dude at LFC. He tries hard but he's just too small.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it is as bad as it used to be and there are a number of examples of players who recover nowadays. Ronaldo won the Golden Boot and moved to Real after cruciate ligament damage. Not a good injury for a player to have had, but I wouldn't rule someone out purely on that basis.
ReplyDeleteOne exception does not nullify a general rule of thumb.
ReplyDeleteShearer and Ruud Van Nistelrooy.
ReplyDelete"3 exceptions nullify the rule of thumb"
Jesus Christ
He's half an inch shorter than Sterling.
ReplyDeleteNo they don't.
ReplyDeleteMe.
Maybe but his legs appear about 6 inches shorter. He outruns nobody. He can't protect the ball from anybody because a taller player will simply get his longer leg out and toe poke the ball away as was seen time and time again vs Matuidi.
ReplyDeleteA bit controversial but still you've won me over with your persuasive argument.
ReplyDeleteThe transfer window has not even officially opened yet yet we have signed two players already. Foot in mouth.
ReplyDeleteI'd rather Flanagan replace Johnson.
ReplyDeleteCheaper option and would show some of the academy players that if they work hard enough and perform well enough consistently, they may get their chance.
Offers us the option of spending the money on other positions.
I agree... and amazingly enough, we paid more than that for Sakho last year when he was riding the bench.
ReplyDeleteJesus > You
ReplyDeleteMaths and religion unite at last!
Yep, we seemed to have haggled over every deal under Rodgers until the point of no return but with that one it's like we just kept throwing money at them until they said "Oui Monsieur Ayre".
ReplyDeleteReal will not sell a young player of such quality. Not unless he starts under performing or we want to accept Varane and cash for you know who.
ReplyDeleteFine, we'll kidnap him and reprogram his brain.
ReplyDeleteTime to dust off my balaclava.
Ayre flashed the motorcycle... that's what did. I'm sure of it!
ReplyDeleteYou lose points from crafty editing after the fact.
ReplyDeleteSkulduggery!
If we sell suarez we will go backwards no matter who we sign
ReplyDeleteGiovinco, pastore, lucas moura, there's plenty of quality out there, no excuses this time.
ReplyDeleteB Rodgers should spend 5-10M on signing S Aurier(21) Of Toulouse, younger, quicker and better defender than M Isla(26). And would adapt and suit the premiership and our club better.
ReplyDeleteI've just heard on tv that a negotiations are underway for Suarez to move to barcalona, 56mil plus Sanchez.few news paper articles hinting at it too.lot of the English press slating Luis again too, Yes he had a part to play in knocking us out but lets face it, as a unit the English players are not as good as the nation seems to always think. Anyhow, hope these are just rumours, another season of Luis and Danny boy would be fantastic
ReplyDeleteSakho for France and Sakho for Liverpool seem like two different players at the moment. No doubt, the pace of the PL has an effect. Sakho isn't a waste, he just hasn't lived up to what most expected for the reputation, perceived ability, and the transfer fee.
ReplyDeleteSo, I think you need to get off your high horse with your 'wait and see' attitude. You said the same for Allen and we are all still waiting. Sakho may well overtake Agger but he's hardly the savior cometh. Skrtel has been your scapegoat for at least 18 months, but he was clearly our best defender last season.
Gawwwdd......
ReplyDeleteGet off my high horse?
ReplyDeleteJust because you feel Sakho hasn't lived up to what most expected for the reputation, perceived ability, and the transfer fee is your opinion.
Nice one :-)
ReplyDeleteWhatever happens next season I'd like to see Johnson moved on. He was the same for England as he is for Liverpool. Good in spurts but then nowhere near in the right position at corners and the way Cavani breezed past him for the first goal, Johnson then made very little effort to close down the cross. Hendo actually got to cavani first despite being significantly further away. We've seen too much of that from Johnson over the years and I for one would far rather give flanno a crack with wisdom and Kelly as backup. I've had enough of Johnson's indifference
ReplyDeleteYes.
ReplyDeleteSo do other people who also believe Sakho has been a scapegoat also have to get off their high horse?
ReplyDeleteHe is THE best player in the world right now.
ReplyDeleteIf we want a right back, Debuchy is the best option imo. Proven in the league and he is used to playing in a four man back line. A lof of the Chile players are in the spotlights right now and rightfully so because they're playing brilliant football. But if I were to buy someone from there I'd be looking at their midfield and attack. The style they play as a national team is exactly how we play at Liverpool.
ReplyDeleteWell in fairness PSG are a bit hard up for cash so it was partially to help them survive...
ReplyDeleteI thought the response was given during the game against Australia?
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, he was actually one of the least poor England players at this world cup..
ReplyDeleteMaybe their minds are on other things....there must be something...I just can't put my finger on it...
ReplyDeleteReally? He's the worst player on the pitch for them. Their one weak link...
ReplyDeletedont waste money BR just develop Andre Wisdom to right back...
ReplyDeleteHe's taller than Mertens and Ribery. Would they be too small for your liking?
ReplyDeleteIt's most people's opinion. Because it's the truth.
ReplyDeleteYes. Both of them.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe people are so small as to be angry at Suarez. The man is there to do a job for his country. What should he do? Not score or celebrate because he works in England? Does that go for the Uruguayans who live and work in England too? Not allowed to celebrate? If the Ingurland supporters want to be angry at someone, they may want to have a look at the CB pairing or that tool Wellbeck. Or even Hodgson who keeps playing him. Sad, small minded and ignorant.
ReplyDeleteRight back signing should be Rakitic (26) or Capel (26). Wait a minute, I thought you wanted Clyne (23) as right back, in fact, you were obsessed with signing him, guess you've jumped on Aurier's bandwagon. And by the way, after the world cup, Aurier's price will be going up, to around 15m, it happens all the time after a World Cup, when a player performs, their stock rises.
ReplyDeleteI think we should concentrate on defence as last season proved time and time again, conceding goals is the problem- 3-3 palace 2-3 Fulham 3-6 Cardiff etc etc . Mignolet has saved us some points but I'm not entirely convinced by him. The Swiss left back Rodriguez looks good. Mangala (Porto) Martinez (real Sociedad) CB. Right back Coleman (Everton ), Montoya (Barcelona) . Ross Barkeley to re energise our midfield with a no fear type of box to box player. Shame he supports Everton but that didn't stop Carragher, Owen and the like playing for us! And Sanchez and Griezmann to supplement our attack. These are the types of players we should now be going for in my opinion. Not Bertrand, caulker etc just average . We've got average. We need the next level of player. We waste too much on average over the years- Alberto aspas borini etc
ReplyDeleteGaz, look at whats happening with the lallana(26) deal due to the fact he is worth 15-20M, we are being told to pay 30m. S Aurier(21) is an attacking mobile solid pacey quick tough tackling right back. In this world cup, he has handled most of the wingers who have come against him 1 vs 1 he is very hard to beat. Something G Johnson(29), M Kelly(23) and J Flannagan(21) are not that great against pacey, quick and skillful wingers they get exposed.
ReplyDeleteS Aurier(21) has come against some very quick skillful wingers and come out on top so far. N Clyne(23) is wanted by Tottenham also and i think D Lovren(24) will be our main defensive signing we make from Southampton.
We did not go for I Rakitic(26) which was comical, but i hope the link we have with S Kheidra(25) is not valid. I hope B Rodgers brings in these three centre midfielders this summer for 46M to upgrade on the class, quality in centre midfield:
1: DM: Y M'Vila(23) Of Rubin Kazan for 8-11M
2: CM: M Sissoko(22) Of Newcastle for 5-8M
3: CM: A Herrera(24) Of A Bilbao for 20-27M
Whilst shipping out these three midfielders for 26M
1: DM: L Leiva(27) should be sold for 8-10M
2: CM: J Allen(24) should be sold for 8-10M
3: AM: L Alberto(21) should be sold for 4-6M
I don't even understand why people consider buying players from Everton. They will not be selling us their best players, even if we offered Man City money.
ReplyDeleteSo he can name three players who have come back strongly from ACL reconstructions and you have a "rule of thumb"? How about naming how many careers have been ended. Repeating yourself doesn't make the argument more convincing.
ReplyDeleteNo.
ReplyDeleteI clearly stated with your 'wait and see' attitude.
