Molby: If BR signs £40m star who's 'like Xavi' it will 'upset' LFC players. Avoid...?

Earlier this year, Liverpool were linked with a summer move for Bayern Munich star Toni Kroos, who is also wanted by Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea, and Reds legend Jan Molby believes the German midfielder is a great potential signing for LFC.

In February, the Daily Express claimed that Liverpool were monitoring the £40m-rated midfielder's situation.

Discussing potential transfer targets this week, Molby suggested Kroos as a good addition to the Liverpool squad, but warned that signing the midfielder could cause problems. He explained:

"Toni Kroos wants to be valued at the same level as the other superstars, so to get him, you'd have to pay big money, and what would that do to the LFC squad? It might upset people"

24-year old Kroos is currently locked in a transfer battle with Bayern, who recently refused to match the player's £150k a week wage demands.

This is just another example of the shameless greed that pervades modern football. Irrespective of what other players earn, Kroos is living the dream and getting paid a sickening amount of money, yet it's apparently not good enough.

Grossly over-pampered and overpraised footballers are so hopelessly out of touch with reality that they genuinely believe that they are worth £150k a week, and fans - as ever, the great enablers - help to perpetuate this lunacy with endless fawning hero worship.

Former Germany midfielder Gunter Netzer believes that Kroos has 'overplayed his hand', and he's advised the midfielder to lower his demands:

"There are a few players who cannot be replaced, but he [Kroos] is not one of them. He might be overrating himself with his wage demands, in that they might not reflect his worth to the team. He would be wise to rethink his situation"

When asked recently about his future, Kroos told German football magazine Kicker:

"I won't rule anything out. There are no further talks [regarding a new contract] scheduled. Sometime in the future a decision will be made".

Bayern boss Pepe Guardiola has also hinted that Kroos could leave. He told reporters:

"He [Kroos] is an important player but things can move fast in football. Here today, gone tomorrow."

Bayern certainly seem to value Kroos, though, and in a recent interview with Sueddeutsche Zeitung, sporting director Matthias Sammer claimed that the club will not sell Kroos 'prematurely', and suggested he is comparable to Barca star Xavi:

"Kroos is like Xavi. Sometimes Toni focuses too much on his own performance, but he has the capability to eventually take responsibility for the way the entire team plays."

Manchester United are reportedly offering Kroos £260k a week, and there's no way (IMO) LFC will offer that much. As such, Kroos is better off going to Old Trafford, where he can join fellow overpaid greed-monger Wayne Rooney.

260k a week? Not a chance in hell.
It's a sickening amount of money yes, but there are a few players who warrant that kind of lay out. They need to justify it from a both a footballing and commercial viewpoint.
If you sign Ronaldo you not only get arguably the worlds best footballer but the worlds most marketable footballing brand. The enormous wages are not just payed on the back of his talent but also the potential revenue generated by him playing for your club.
Is Toni Kroos a name that offers that? Not a hope.
He is a quality player but not worth putting that finacial noose around the neck for. Let United have him, then lets see how they cope shelling out nearly 600k a week on just two players without CL football for a few years.

  2. We're talking the best central midfielder in the world once his head is sorted out again. An upgrade even on Steven Gerrard in his best of times. Whoever signs him will have a player which is far superior to the one currently at Bayern.

Once you manage to put confidence back in this player, he is a world beater.

  3. Liverpool are joint top with BR's net spend of £60m...................why would he blast money now??

  4. Would be a waste of time pursuing this player. He'll stay at Bayern.

  5. Liverpool won't buy big stars at all, It's not BR's way, he likes to buy good players that can improve with age. He likes to buy potential which is a lot cheaper than established stars..............I'm very comfortable with this model.

  6. honestly, we can't sign this guy. We can't afford his wages. He'll go to a PSG, Man City, clubs who UEFA are afraid to impose strict sanctions upon.

Better than Gerard in his prime? You're having a laugh!

Let's see if he's nominated for the Ballon d'or like Gerrard has been. Or man of the match in a CL final...

Excellent player' but sounds like a touch of the Anelkas...

  8. They can have him but doubt Kroos will join them if he is not going to play in the CL...

  9. Honestly...we don't don't need this gold-plated Cadillac. With 40 million we could get Rakitic and Kono. We get Borini back. We get Ibe back and put him on the wing to spell Raheem. We get Wisdom back for defense. We Ilori back. We sell Aspas, Coates, Kelly and Alberto and use the money for a couple of quality full backs and maybe another quality striker who plays LC, FA Cup matches (Jordan Rhodes would be my vote)...and we're good.

  10. Somehow I can't bring myself to put 'once his head is sorted' and 'best central mid-fielder in the world' in the same sentence and take myself seriously.

  13. Mourinho just got a taste of his own medicine. How could such a "brilliant" manager not figure out how to break down the bus?

They pressed like us for 90 mins but showed more intelligence than our display last week

    ReplyDelete
  15. I disagree. They didn't show more intelligence. The disparity between the two teams (Che Nor) today was much larger than the two teams (Liv Che) last week.

in the second half of the season we have played a diamond in midfield both away from home AND against the big sides and it has worked pretty much everytime. We switched to 4-3-3 against chelsea which i find makes us extremely vulnerable against the top sides. In my opinion BR got his system wrong, his tactics wrong and the team showed poor match intelligence as a result.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm of the opinion that there was nothing wrong with the system last week.

Chelsea was fortunate to score. There was nothing tactical about Chelsea scoring last week. They kept Demba Ba high and even then he wasn't really pressing. He was just standing there and hoping for a fortuitous bounce, which he got.

We needed some good fortune ourselves, and we didn't get it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. OK, but answer this. Apart from the corner before the Gerrard mistake, can you honestly say we were under any kind of real pressure? We only needed to draw, and we were on course to do that until that mistake. It is just one of those things as far as I'm concerned - not some tactical aberration. Intensely disappointing that things panned out that way but there is a large element of luck in football and our's ran out at that time.
Let's see if it doesn't come back to bite City.

ay thats cool, I can see where you're coming from but I still think we played right into their hands. They allowed us to cross because they knew we had no physical presence in the box......... and we kept crossing and turning over possession. we reminded me of Barcelona when they played Chelsea in the CL semi final. After a certain point Chelsea were never going to concede a third that day and Barca continued to bang their head of a wall. Coutinho out wide offers us nothing. He lacks pace and doesnt work the line efficiently (defensively). We should have played Sterling up top with Coutinho either in the hole or in the place of Lucas of the sides. I just think we didn't have to change a winning formula and start with Coutinho out wide for the first time in ages simply because he scored coming of the bench in the game previous.

just after Christmas when we played Chelsea and Man city we scored first in both games and then crumbled playing a 4-3-3. I just feel teams get at our back four far to easily which creates anxiety. Chelsea weren't great, they havent been all season, but we treated them like they were Norwich or Cardiff and completely forgot the Mourinho factor. Mourinho went to Anfield with no shame and defended for his life.

We should have countered them instead of getting 'rope a doped'

  28. I agree with you in the sense of "if it's not broken, why fix it". I think what you're 'highlighting is just how important Henderson has become this year for us.

yeah exactly! We missed Henderson big time.

  31. Well Moyes has won more trophies than Mourinho this season :) and his system is not that different than mourinho (kick the ball to te striker and hope for a miracle)

  32. Fair enough.
I suppose I think you can over analyse things in terms of formations. There are a lot of swings in momentum in matches not necessarily always related to formation. I think what I am saying is: yes I wouldhave like us to find a breakthrough and maybe a different formation may have helped; but I am getting confused when you say we might have been more secure and wouldn't have conceced. To me, hindsight is a wonderful thing and personally I felt we were comfortable at the time. I was on edge becauseof what was at stake. Given Brendan a break mate!!

I am honestly just happy that we play the type of football and have the type of players I want to watch. I was open and early in saying Kenny should go despite the protests and said at the time that off BR's appointment that 'i'm right behind BR till the wheels fall off.' Nothing has changed :) . I'll take BR over Houllier, Rafa, Kenny or anyone else for that matter. He rarely makes the same mistake twice.

  34. With how much world football brings in I'm happy the players are at least demanding to be more compensated, getting their share as it were.

  35. He is not a fit for LFC. Man Shitty Manure or Chelsea pander to players like that Liverpool doesn't.

  36. Yes I agree. Although I think he'll improve next season.

  41. Why would B Rodgers waste £35-£40M on T Kroos(24) on salary of £150,000 a week plus: who would both share that weekly salary and offer more to club and squad:

When he could bring in these two centre midfielders for price of Kroos:

    A Lallana(25) Of Southampton for £14-£18M AM

    I Rakitic(25) Of Seville for £12-£18M CM

These two centre midfielders should be brought to club along with Y M'Vila(23) Of Rubin Kazan for £8-£11M

Then next season our centre midfield would be able to cope in europe and league comfortably if there were any injuries as there will be class, quality, quality competition for places in key areas:

DM: Gerrard(33), Lucas(27) and M'Vila(23) competing with one another

CM: Allen(24), Henderson(23) and Rakitic(25) competing one another

AM: Coutinho(21) Lallana(25) and Suso(20) competing with one another
