Liverpool defender Daniel Agger is once again being linked with a move to Barcelona, and Reds legend Mark Lawrenson believes that the Dane's time at Anfield is finally up.
Multiple reports over the last few days claim that Barca are preparing a summer offer for £15m-rated Agger, and according to Lawro, the Dane 'will be allowed to go' if the 'money is right'. He added:
"Agger has not been an automatic first choice this season.
"Rodgers watches him in training on a regular basis and has clearly seen something he doesn’t like. If a manager doesn’t fancy a player, usually that’s that".
Jamie Carragher also believes that Rodgers doesn't rate Agger. Speaking to Sky Sports earlier this month, he noted:
"I've mentioned before I don't think he [Rodgers] is the biggest fan of Daniel Agger and that's why he always seems to leave him out".
Agger made only 23 appearances last season, and whilst the number is lower due to the reduced number of games available, it's still 16 fewer games than Martin Skrtel.
Given the fact Rodgers made Agger vice-captain of the club, the contention that he 'doesn't like' the Dane seems strange. Additionally, Rodgers always seems to praise Agger in the highest terms (most recently labelling him 'outstanding'), but he overpraises most players, so maybe we shouldn't read too much into that.
In my view, Liverpool should definitely sell this season. The Reds rejected a £15m bod from Barcelona during the last summer transfer window, and Agger won't attract that kind of transfer fee for much longer.
Agger, Lucas, and Johnson are relics of the Benitez era; the squad has moved on, and it's arguably time for a change.

Why would he make someone a vice captain if he didnt like them??
ReplyDeleteI think he expected more from him leadership wise and by making him vice captain he thought this would bring out the best in him. It clearly has not worked. I love DA but he doesn't fit into a system that requires pace in all areas. If 15m came in I would sell and leave emotions aside. You will not get this sort of money a year or two down the line
ReplyDeletesell Sakho no Agger.
ReplyDeleteI really like Agger, but his much- touted ability on the ball has not been much in evidence recently and his defensive tracking and marking are somewhat suspect.
ReplyDelete£15m would be good business and allow us to target a top DEFENSIVE CB with good organisation skills and calmness on the ball
Time for agger to go I was a big fan but now gets beaten to the ball both on the ground and in the air to often. Also his attitude is not good. Time to cash in.
ReplyDeleteI see no problems with his attitude or love of LFC.
ReplyDeleteTo what do you refer?
if we had Agger & Skrtel as the CB pairing for the season we would have won the league. BR bottled it by signing Sakho.
ReplyDeleteI think you're forgetting how many times that pairing conceded to simple set pieces and Agger losing his man whilst Skrtyl tried to take the shirt off his..
ReplyDeleteSakho had better end of season stats than Agger. BR just should have brought him in towards the end when Sakho could have done with being rested and Agger was chomping at the bit
Saying he bottled it is nonsense
I have always been a big fan of DA, however he does have a bad habit of losing his man in set pieces.
ReplyDeleteAlways his Injury record has always been a concern. With age no longer on his side and his injury record, now would be a good time to cash in.
Bit of a no-brainer. For whatever reason, he's not the player he once was. It's bit like Reina, we all like him, but he's not performing. I don't know if we'll get £15M for him, but we should get over £10M. Let's cash in, and get someone else in.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be upset if we sold Skrtel and Sakho too. None of the centre backs have performed well this season.
I say that we should sign Vincent Kompany :-o
ReplyDeleteIf only...
He would have made the difference for sure.
ReplyDeleteQuite like that other Toure too . If only...
He's got another LFC tattoo recently. Very difficult to put the emotions aside..
ReplyDeleteNo tattoo is bigger than the club.
ReplyDeleteI'd prefer Johnson to be offloaded though.
Yes Agger's injuries obviously mean Rodgers bottled it. Where do some people get these ideas.
ReplyDeleteSkrtel had a great season
ReplyDeletesakho is the problem. If we got a GOOD cb for 18m last summer we wouldn't have this problem. Agger is Liverpool and a better cb than Sakho - should leave LFC only if he wishes.
ReplyDeleteYou have to admit that Skrtel outperformed all our defenders this season (apart from the record own goals lol)
ReplyDeleteHe scored 7 goals, but also scored 4 OG's, gave away penalties, and made many other defensive mistakes. At every corner we defend he makes me nervous. Only generous refereeing prevented more pens being conceded. His biggest problem at corners is that he wrestles the man he's marking rather than looking at the ball and trying to head it.
ReplyDeleteWe need a leader in central defence, and he's not that man. At his age and with his experience he should be, but he's not.
True it is..The team can certainly improve with a better player, young and fit, hungry on the pitch. But it's the emotional side I'm talking about. No player is bigger than the club, but the child inside all of us wants him to stay..isn't it??
ReplyDeleteWe're not interested. Keep him.!
ReplyDeleteWe all like Agger, he's been a stalwart for us for years and his loyalty has been commendable. If he goes we will miss commentators saying 'and we know Agger can hit them' every time he gets within 40 yards of the goal, before he proceeds to smash it into row z.
ReplyDeleteWhen all is said and done though, we are trying to improve the team. Is Agger suddenly going to become one of the leading centre halves in the league? I doubt it, and that's what we need to win the title. Time for him to move on, with our appreciation...
I think it's time to go, taking out all sentiment aside, he is easily replaceable. He has stalled for the last couple of years and injuries have not improved...
ReplyDeleteFor £15M I would accept a bid, he is 30 now and I doubt we will get anything near that for him.
Good player and loyal to the club but time to go IMO.
And I agree with JK, same applies to Lucas and Johnson and Pepe.
If a good bid comes in then sell him. But I don't think we should just sell him, just because. Upwards of £10 million would probably be acceptable and realistic.
ReplyDeletesakho kept hardly no clean sheets. theres something about him which made the back four unsettled, not marking properly, clumsyness, shakyness and if you failed to see that as a fan last season then your clearly blind. he was robust in the tackle, but the fact is whenever Sakho played we definately concede goals, whereas at the start of the season we went on a 3 match unbeaten streak and with 3 clean sheets and then Sakho comes in and Shelvey is all over him like a rash. Sakho was shaky when we lost to Arsenal. but other than BR not starting sturridge against Chelsea, the gerrard slip and BR taking off sterling against Palace, i think the thing that really killed our season was that Joe Allen miss against Everton. to be fair to him he improved later on in the season but if he just scored that easy chance or squared it to Suarez, we would have gone 3-1 up and got the three points. those 3 points was crucial for the run we was about to go on, and maybe if we had gone 3-1 up we wouldnt have risked Sturridge who got injured for crucial games against top teams like Spurs, City and Chelsea.
ReplyDeleteKompany does pick up his fair share of injuries too.
ReplyDeleteTerry next to Skrtel would have probably won us the league.
What is Carra talking about? I love the guy but he seems to be making stuff up. Agger was first choice to partner Carra last season, it was a very solid season for him. If Rodgers didn't fancy Agger then what was going on then? Agger played more games in Rodger's first season than he did in any other season in his LFC career. If Carra knows something or has some inside knowledge then he should come out and say it. I suspect he's just trying to be interesting for the job.
ReplyDeleteI'm struggling to see what Agger has done wrong. He's no worse a defender than he ever has been in the past and in my view he's clearly above average in the Premier League. We struggle as a team with defensive responsibility, I would ask those who think we don't need him to explain precisely what his shortcomings are.
There is one aspect that nobody seems to have picked up on.
ReplyDelete1. LFC conceded 50 goals this past season.
2. With Sakho in the team we have conceded 25 goals in his 18 appearances.
3. How many goals did we concede without Sakho in the team *drumroll* 25 goals in 18 matches!
4. Sakho is nothing but a scapegoat...
Terry next to Toure too or Agger or Sakho as a matter of fact. We needed a leader which was clearly the problem this season.
ReplyDeletewould have won the title if Carragher had of played 1 more season
ReplyDeleteI am a huge fan of Agger, but if we receive an offer of €15 million, we should sell, then immediately re-invest in Lovren, or someone else who can be a leader at the back.
ReplyDeleteLovren stated that he wanted to achieve top four with Southampton when he signed, a little ambitious but that's what we want.
Agger starting against Newcastle felt like a goodbye......
Apparently we're all blind according to one poster.
ReplyDeletePeople seem to make things up from their own opinion and present it as if it's obvious to everybody, completely forgetting to check if the reality fits their opinion....
I'm not voting on this one.
ReplyDeleteLast summer it was sell Agger or Skrtel? I voted Skrtel with Agger and Toure as CBs. Then Skrtel had a storming couple of months, so it was Skrtel and Toure, sell Agger. Then Toure started having walking nightmares on the pitch, so it was get Sakho and Skrtel together, forget the rest. Then Sahko, Skrtel, Agger and Toure all decided to go off their meds and i was left wondering where the hell Sami Hypia had gone...
I'm leaving this one to the manager, he just better sort something out this window....
I need to sit down.
Spot on.
ReplyDeleteThey were all as bad as each other at some stage of the season.
ReplyDeleteBut Skrtel did nod in a few goals... at either end.
glen johnson was the bad apple check almost 80% of liverpool deflected own goals where from johnson .. the guy has a knack of being in the wrong place at the wrong time
ReplyDeleteI think its quite clear that we need to sell Agger and Skrtyl...just get rid of Toure for free if we have to. None of those are good enough. Sakho to be judged so harshly is surprising...its his first season and physically he is a beast. He will be better next year imo...and hopefully when we play a settled back four.
ReplyDeleteIdeally id love to see Lovren and Caulker come in...a defensive back four of Flanno, Lovren, Sakho or caulker and Can (if the rumours are true) is significantly better than this years
I think we need better than Flanno, maybe he will improve, but him facing Ronaldo in the CL. gimme a break.
ReplyDeletesell toure and keep agger....
ReplyDeleteSo Agger as said that he thinks Rodgers doesn't think he is good enough. Perhaps that is why Cara said what he said as he may still have contact with Agger.
ReplyDeleteIt may not be specifically true though as he did make him vice captain so would surely have expected him to play more than he has. Perhaps this is a way of testing Agger to get the best out of him. Skrtel ended up having an odd season but at times looked very good, this was after being frozen out. These very experienced international captains need to be consistently good to have a secure place in the team and that is fine by me.
There's been nothing to suggest that Rodgers doesn't like Agger from what I've seen. Skrtel just happens to have been the only centre-back to remain available at all times, so the others have had to rotate around him for continuity purposes more-so than for anything else.
ReplyDeleteSkrtel should definitely be the first one out of the door for me still
Surely you're referring to Skrtel there???
ReplyDeleteJohnson let's crosses go in to the box unchecked. Skrtel is the one that continually sends crosses speeding towards our own net.
Hopefully Flannagan has garnered enough of a reputation to command a decent transfer fee and continue a successful career elsewhere. There is nothing about him that strikes me as a CL calibre player though from watching all of last season (and I know that we qualified for the CL with him playing extensive minutes, thank you very much)
ReplyDeleteThe rejuvenation of our attack was carried out pretty harshly with the likes of Kuyt, Maxi et al being ditched to good effect. The same needs to be done with the defence, with Skrtel, Johnson and Agger all joining Reina on the way out
ReplyDelete"Is Agger suddenly going to become one of the leading centre halves in the league?" - Actually of ALL centre halves currently in the EPL, Daniel Agger holds the record of most clean sheets in matches played.
ReplyDeleteSo no Agger is not 'suddenly going to be one of the leading centre halves in the league' - He already is topping that list.
