Game Over? LFC in talks to sell 'quality' €8m star who wants to quit Anfield

Last week, The Guardian claimed that €8m LFC misfit Luis Alberto is one of 11 players Brendan Rodgers wants to scrap this summer. Whilst it's unlikely that the Reds will dump that many players, Alberto is clearly on the outs at Anfield, and reports today suggest that Malaga could be the Spaniard's next move.

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo today:

* Malaga are currently in talks with LFC over signing Alberto.

* Alberto wants the move, and hopes to resurrect his career in Spain.

To be fair to Alberto, it's not entirely his fault. Rodgers - who recently described the attacker as 'quality' - clearly hasn't given the Spaniard a fair chance in the team, and although he let himself down with the drink-driving issues, that came *after* he'd already been dumped from the match-day squad for 8 games in a row.

And let's no forget the public humiliation Alberto endured in January, when Rodgers yanked him off at half-time against lower-league Oldham Athletic. Managerial misuse notwithstanding, the oft-advanced idea that Alberto is 'one for the future' is just blinkered, head-in-sand hogwash; Rodgers made a mistake, it's as simple as that.

Plus, it still gets my goat that he spent €8m on Alberto, and sent Suso on loan. LFC should've just kept Suso, and put that money towards a different player. One of the most pointless transfers in recent years (IMO).

As usual, Pro-Rodgers zealots continue to spin all kinds of unsubstantiated myths about why Alberto failed to get into the team, the most prevalent of which is that he's 'not a good trainer'. There's absolutely zero evidence to back this up, however, and Rodgers own comments about Alberto's 'working hard' in training categorically refute that lie.

To me, it seemed obvious very early on that Alberto wasn't going to cut it at Anfield, and I made that argument many times during the season. The best thing he can do for his career is move to another club where he'll hopefully play under a manager has confidence in his ability.

  1. Strange. It can be a loan deal?

  2. isn't it a loan deal

  3. I never understood Alberto's signing either, nor signing Aspas and loaning out Borini (although I don't think Borini is good enough either), or loaning out Assaidi and bringing in a right footed Stewart Downing in Victor Moses.

Hopefully we can recoup most of the money wasted on these players and just treat it as a learning experience

  4. Rodgers/the transfer committee do seem to be on target with their first choice signings on the evidence of the last few windows.

If they miss out on their first choice targets though, the club would be best served by forcing Rodgers to just use the reserves and save the money up for another day, instead of buying any more players that won't play...

  5. I think you should be more respectful of a manager who has turned our club around after the mess your King Kenny left it in

  6. Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot that Rodgers is a canonised Saint, and any criticism of him was outlawed by an Act of Parliament after LFC finished 2nd in the league. My bad.

  7. Might be a good idea to wait until BR actually wins something before you start comparing him to Dalglish. Kenny has won rather a lot for Liverpool, you know.

  8. Jamie for once I'm totally not against ur opinion. Although I think a loan would be more fitting. I personally don't think it's fair to say he can't cut it, when u came on he always wanted the ball, and did something with it. However I do agree that u can criticise any person no matter how good they have been for our club (comment earlier). I think BR is quality, but is still learning. I think loan him to a PL side and c what he's got to offer. An actually ok article, well done 👍

  9. Your King Kenny? I'll admit his second stint as manager didn't go the way we'd hoped although he did win a trophy, he is still a Liverpool legend. He gave his all to Liverpool from the good times to the bad and I think he deserves a bit of respect from someone who calls himself a Liverpool fan.

  10. I guess I can understand the frustrations and grievances of Daniel Agger. He is not playing as regularly as he wished and seemingly losing his place to Sakho, who is a big-named/priced but incompetent defender. Seems like FSG/BR/transfer committee screwed up big time, again, in the transfer market. Sakho, a defender that is clumsy, fallible and perturbable plus questionable decision making coupled with some mindless tackles. Stats-wise Sakho highlighted his incompetency with number of goals the team conceded and number of clean sheets the team had in the limited number of games he played in. Yes, Agger is getting easily outpaced by opposing attacking players but he makes it up with experience. I'll take the Agger/Skrtel partnership over one with Sakho/someone any time any day if you ask me.

If LFC is to mount a serious assault in both Europe and domestic title next season, they certainly have to patch up that leaky defense, 50 goals conceded in the league will not win us the title, simple as that. If any CB is to leave, it should be Sakho and not Agger. I'm holding my breath and see what BR and that transfer committee is capable of doing in the summer. I hope they find competent replacements for Sakho and Glen Johnson. Of course it will be ok to sell if good offers come in for Agger, Skrtel and Flanagan but again all of us should know the price to pay for integration after making wholesale changes to the team.

Very excited to see how far we can go in the Champions League after a long absence. Simply can't stop drooling with thoughts of LFC kicking the asses of Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, PSG and Real Madrid etc.

  11. What an amazing surprise. Barcelona reserve who can't make the first team, not even a substitution to his name, by the age of 21 does not magically become a Premier League superstar over one summer...Who could have seen that one coming? Well, who other than the thousands upon thousands of people who questioned the transfer the second it was mentioned.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Who said anything about Alberto becoming a 'superstar'. I don't think anyone expected that. The point I'm making is that it was clear from very early on he wouldn't have any *long-term* future at LFC.

  13. You forgot Johnson.

  14. Well we certainly wont miss him. Never heard of him until he came to us, then did'nt see much of him, pointless.

  15. Nobody can really understand why was LA and Aspas constantly being ignored by BR. If they were deemed not good enough, then why buy them in the first place? Were the purchases being made after some hear-say or did anyone in the club scouted them? Was it because of some kind of a power struggle between BR and that whatsoever transfer committee? Man, we desperately need some insider information to tell us what the hell actually happened.

Even in one-sided home matches against WBA, Fulham and Everton with victory almost guaranteed after the 60th min mark, LA and Aspas hardly featured. At least LA was playing in all the 3 matches, though with a meaningless 89th min substitution again WBA. Aspas's fate was even worse. He was unused in the match against Everton, with LFC leading 4-0 after 50th min. The humiliating one was the match against Norwich City, with LFC leading 3-0 before half time. He was being sent on in the 92nd min. Doing this to a 17 year-old is okay but certainly not to someone 26 years old. Then all of a sudden, he was being sent on in the home match against Chelsea in the somewhat 'surprising' 81st min, with all attention on him to see if he's the saviour for the club's title challenge. His performance in that match was forgettable but the real losers were that/those whosoever that decided his purchase and that/those who decided the way he was being utilized/unutilized throughout the entire season.

Now, we shall see who is the next casualty comes next season.

  16. Johnson(29) is better than Flannagan(21( and injury prone sick note M Kelly(23) or A Wisdom(20). That is why B Rodgers does not ship him out, he has always been good going forward but he is always get exposed defensively. But because he is better than what we have in reserve x2, he will not be sold or shipped out. If Flannagan(21), Kelly(23) Or Wisdom(20) were of same class or quality then Johnson(29) would have been shipped out last summer, but they are all better defenders. But not good enough to displace him

  18. Yes I agree with you on this one the analysis is a bit off. Sakho has a good pass accuracy and a physical presence. I think that he needs to settle and improve but I'm not as disheartened as most in regards to his potential.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well Alberto may have been a mistake or Brendans use of him but no way do i see Susos loaning a mistake.
The kid needed game time at the top and got it albeit at Almeria but none the less his value has increased if he decides to leave and now he has valuable experience.

  20. Skrtel had a good season scored 7 but also scored 4 own goals. Cut Sakho some slack but you are entitled to your opinion of course.

I knew the likes Allerdyce,Pulis,Nigel Clough etc would do us a favour one day. What Alberto needs is one almighty kick up the behind and not be such a dope.

I'd only use him in League Cup games against much lower opposition. We are Liverpool and need to set our sights higher.

  24. BRs transfer record leaves a lot to be desired. Alberto's transfer made no sense as Suso is better and showed more potential than Alberto before he left. But hey ho if he leaves we can blame BR for a waste of 7 mill...

If I was Agger I'd be pissed off too looking at the bumbling Sakho get ahead of me AND having propagadanists here cheerleading him.People have short memories.Sakho isn't a leader.

  33. Your king Kenny? Kenny dalglish has done more for Liverpool than anyone else in history. Go read up on the aftermath of hillsborough and how Kenny led the people through one of the darkest times in the city of Liverpool's history. Went to funeral after funeral a figure of strength. Not to mention the number of trophies he's won for this club. Your king Kenny? To me as a Liverpool fan that remark was offensive

  36. Voted sell also even though I think Sakho is horrible and Agger is definitely a better player. However, compare Agger's response to that of Skrtel a year earlier. You didn't see Skrtel moaning and groaning in the press. He got his head down and made himself FIRST choice again. That's the attitude you'd want in players. It's so easy to complain about the manager not liking you. What you need to do is find out what it is he doesn't like and improve that. So as far as I'm concerned both Sakho and Agger can be sold. One for being rubbish and the other for lacking back bone.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The thing is M Skrtel(29) and D Agger(29) are the two best defenders at club by a country mile. B Rodgers problem was he spent the most money on a player since his reign 18M on Sakho(23) and tried to justify playing him more times than not.

M Skrtel(29) and M Sakho(23) are similar Defenders, no nonsense tough tackling mobile powerful strong athletic players. Both are class quality defenders but neither are leaders.

D Agger(29) is the best playing centre back in world football, but what he lacks mobility, pace, speed, strength as he has got older and the amount of injuries he has had over his time, playing in the fastest league in world.

D Agger(29) has been exposed at times, But in all honesty i am hoping B Rodgers sorts his differences with D Agger(29) and we keep him.

But B Rodgers should bring in S Caulker(22) Of Cardiff and D Lovren(24) Of Southampton for combined total of 22M. As in two to three years time, Skrtel(29) and D Agger(29) will be on their way out. And by that time, Caulker, Llori, Lovren and Sakho will be more experienced and would have learned from the best. And able to take over in all competitions.

And in Champions league games: B Rodgers should use the class, quality and experience of Agger(29) and Skrtel(29) together. And in the League: D Lovren(24) and Sakho(24) should be first choice and given chance to build strong solid partnership. With B Rodgers using Caulker(22) in Fa Cup and Carling cup games with whomever or as back up if anyone is injured.

  38. You don't 'prove' anything with statistics. At best you show trends, nothing more. Lies, damned lies and statistics is how Mark Twain put it and he was right!

  39. That was just drunk talk right??

    ReplyDelete
  40. B Rodgers should ship out players who are not good enough or offer their opposite numbers any real competition for their place.

B Rodgers should not sell Agger(29) unless he receives 15-20M for him.

B Rodgers should sort out his differences with D Agger(29) as M Skrtel(29) and D Agger(29) kept the most clean sheets together.

The average/dead wood or injury prone defensive players who should be shown the door are these players:

    GK : B Jones(32) CB: S Coates(23) CB: K Toure(33)

    RB: M Kelly(23) DM: L Leiva(27)

And then B Rodgers should bring in these 5 defensive players TO REPLACE THE 5/FIVE above:

    GK: M Vorm(30) Of Swansea for 3-6M

    CB: D Lovren(24) Of Southampton for 10-14M

    CB: S Caulker(22) Of Cardiff for 5-7M

    LB: J Obita(20) Of Reading for 3-5M

    DM: Y M'Vila(23) Of Rubin Kazan 8-11M
