Exciting News? BR expects to sign 'explosive' €25m Barca star for bargain €10m

During the January transfer window, Liverpool were strongly linked with a loan move for Barcelona attacker Cristian Tello, a long-time Brendan Rodgers transfer target. With Barca's transfer ban now suspended, Tello is free to leave this summer, and the Reds are reportedly close to sealing a deal.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport this week:

* Tello has fallen out with Barca boss Gerardo Martino, and wants to leave.

* Barca have told Tello he can leave, and are willing to sell for €10m.

* Liverpool are currently in talks with Barca over a possible summer deal.

* Rodgers is 'confident' a deal can be agreed.

Tello has a €25m buyout clause in his contract, so if Liverpool snapped him up for €10m, it would mean a massive discount of €15m.

Liverpool's interest in Tello is beyond dispute, and the player himself confirmed this in September 2013, when he told Marca:

"I knew that Liverpool were interested in me, but I never planned to leave. I always wanted to stay at Barca. The coach has confidence in me, I am content there and ready to play a lot of minutes".

In December, the Reds were heavily linked with a January move for Tello, and at the time, a report in Spanish newspaper Marca claimed:

"Cristian Tello is very close to leaving the club in the January transfer window. According to Radio Barca, Tello is close to joining Liverpool on loan".

Soon after, CNN journalist Tancredi Palmeri - who also writes for Italian newspaper Gazetta Dello Sport - claimed that a 'source' at Barcelona has confirmed to him that Tello is definitely joining Liverpool:

Prior to signing his new contract in September 2013, Tello - recently described by Martino as 'very explosive' - hinted that he could be forced to leave if things don't change. He told Spanish newspaper Sport:

"Next year we'll see what suits me best. [I want to be] playing as much as possible but I know who I have in front of me. I know that I can perform at the top, but that's the coach's decision"

Tello may have talent, but With Messi and Neymar ahead of him, he's once again stuck in the role of perennial substitute, and unless something drastic changes, this is likely to be the pattern for the foreseeable future.

€10m for Tello is, admittedly, great value, but do Liverpool really need him? If Rodgers signs the Spaniard, where does that leave the likes of Suso and Teixeira? Is Tello a game-changer? Will he come in and make an immediate impact, or will he be Alberto MK2?

  1. I feel like this guy has been "on the radar" for us and close to signing for us for the past two years.

I hope it happens as I think he'd be a nice pickup. But it's reached the stage of I'll believe it when I see it at this point.

  2. Wait and see about this one, to be honest it'll prob be the case of waiting for a lot of transfers this year given its a world cup one. Nice if we can get a couple deals done before the inevitable inflated prices for the top players come July. On a side note I reckon Borini might be getting another chance, if not his transfer value will not of gone down from what we paid given his form.

  3. I've seen him a few times live in Barcelona, stockpile your blood pressure tablets folks as he's talented but extremely frustrating.Wasn't it Wilde who said 'stupidity is doing the same thing repeatedly but expecting different results'.The season isn't over and we're linked to attackers not defenders.

  4. What's so special about this guy!!? Does anyone know because I don't..???
I'd take Iturbe or Griezmann ahead of him anyday!! Am I wrong?

  5. Agree with the guys below has talent but can frustrate.... a loan to purchase might be best...but am sure other names will be flooding in come end of season...and there is always a few players who make a name at world cup. One thing we can offer over city/chelsea is that whoever we sign will have a better chance of making our starting XI, reckon we'll be fighting a few transfer battles with utd/arsenal...forget about the dutch players given who's coming to utd!

  6. wilde also said, 'it's bad to be talked about, but worse not to be talked about'. Liverpool are back :)

  7. Agreed 100% but we need to steady the ship starting from the (hate saying it)bridge and the back, unless Luis jumps but I don't want to tempt fate there.

  8. Good point about the Dutch,OT will have stolen a lead there.

  9. Answer to the first question,not a lot.IMO.

  10. You're right also about Griezmann and Iturbe.

  11. Still don't think van gaal the answer for them....they have a hell of a lot to rebuild there...can throw money at it but they might not have much time to gel...hopefully!! Really hope they miss champs league next season when the real big money kicks in...then they'll know about it! Important we stay in the top four mix for seasons to come.

  12. Yep,this season is huge.Efficient squad rotation from Opening Day will be vital, meaning NOT having the likes of Alberto,Moses,Cissokho,Aspas or Moses as back-up,plus properly resting SG and Sturridge.

  13. I'm not oppossed to the signing because he's a very talented young player but once again, he's not what we need & we've only got so much money. As long as this doesn't detract from those vital acquisitions (GK, LB, D/CM, LW) then i'd say in many ways he's a very good & shrewd purchase. His age means he will be happy to bide his time for his chance but he's quality enough to come on & affect any game from any of the forward positions. He's at a good level already but is still growing & very hungry, just needs game time. I see Iturbe got a mention & he's on my list at LW (or Konoplyanka)... either would be class. For me our most important signing will be the one that sorts the midfield & that can ONLY be Rakitic imo. Rojo or Moreno at LB & you can pick the goalie JK, knowone really stands out to me! I'd take Firmino or Cuadrado over Lallana all day if we're buying that type of player but again... not what we relly need!

  14. Lets at least try and end the season scoring more goals than city....you never know the big geordie might have a magic game ;)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Rakitic/Rojo would be great but will cost a chunk, we also know we won't be alone looking at those two...reckon bayern/barca may be sniffing just to name two

    ReplyDelete
  16. Rakitic is my number one target,he just screams Liverpool,Well,I hope.

  17. Surely 8M would be a steal for the talent Tello has and he'd make a great impact player plus would help give strong competition to sterling and coutinho

  18. Very good player. The only question is about his phychical presence. I don't know if he can handle the prem power. But for only 10.000.000 euros, I think that we should take our chances.

  20. Borini scores today to help Sunderland stay up. So...we either bring him back or sell him to Sunderland. I'm for bringing him back...but he may be growing attached to Sunderland now that he has the key to the city.

  21. I'm afraid the statistics (lies, damn lies) belie the facts. His pass to Steven Gerrard was a very, very BIG problem and effectively ended our terrific series of wins by losing to Chelsea. You will of course say he cannot be blamed because Gerrard allowed it to squeeze underneath his foot and slip when trying to recover. - To a large degree that is true. But, IMO he always seems uncomfortable on the ball, gets it stuck between his big long legs then shovels it on like a hot potato to his nearest team mate. - For those reasons his passing is unpredictable and seldom more than 15 yards - usually square or backwards. His team-mates always seem on edge when he is in possession, never knowing what to expect - hence Gerrard's mis-control. Take particular note of the range and lack of penetration of his passes on Sunday against Newcastle. I would always choose Daniel Agger in preference to him if he is fit.
However, it has been a great season which exceeded all our expectations but still a chance missed to light-up Anfield again. Doesn't seem like it's going to happen now. Sad!

  22. Tello is good but he is over-hyped. Sign a player like Rakitic instead

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hey Jamie! You asked a few questions at the end but didn't answer them. Do you think Tello will fit into the squad? What's your take?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Not if it means we won't sign anyone else in that position. I believe he's mentally weak.

    ReplyDelete
  25. same history over and over...how many players have you seen LFC been linked to and how many of them has indeed been shipped to LFC? too lenient on transfer market

    ReplyDelete
  26. Tello appears to be good value and surely cant be as bad as Moses cant really see him coming making any difference to Suso or Texeira as he will be bought to mainly occupy the left side.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It seems like another average gamble in the lower ends of the transfer market. Maybe we really do rate Tello, maybe Rodgers believes he just needs a few tweaks to his game and the right opportunity and he'll explode onto the Premier League. But we were looking to loan him ... that doesn't inspire me with confidence. He sounds like a gamble, a player we can't be sure will have a consistent first team impact. We have enough players like that, we don't need more. The time is over for padding the squad, this upcoming season we need clear and obvious quality. I'd take Lallana over Tello any day of the week and even still I think we can aim higher.

  31. How many players did B Rodgers bring to club last summer? I am saying he needs to bring in 9 class quality players and ship out all the average, injury prone or players he doesn't trust or want at club who offer the club very little.

Last summer we brought in 8 players, 6 on books and 2 loan players?

We need to forget the loan signings as we have not had one good loan signing we have kept so far and bring in 9 class quality players.

While shipping out the players who offer the club very little in class, depth and quality but are on descent salaries:

The players i mentioned we need to ship out offer the club, squad very little and have not been a huge part of clubs success this year:

    Why keep any of these?

GK: P Reina(31) World class, but became too complacent during last three years at club and manager no longer trusts or wants him, so he will be sold this summer.

GK: B Jones(32) is he is not good enough to deputise or put Mignolet(25) on bench when he makes stupid mistakes. Mignolet(25) is best shot stopper in league apart from that he is comical, corners, his distribution and his kicking are poor.

    CB: K Toure(33) CB: S Coates(23)
Both these centre backs are not good enough, Toure is 6 years past his best and was at his best at Arsenal he makes too many mistakes for experienced defender, S Coates is injury prone and not good enough at all.

RB: M Kelly(23) is injury prone, in 3 years how many games has he played? Yet he is getting paid 35,000-45,000 every week without fail, without having to play for side.

DM: L Leiva(27) is not mobile, does not have pace or speed and always looks like he is running in quick sand all the time. He has not got back to the form he had before serious injury. Whenever him and Gerrard(33) play in the middle, our defence are easily exposed as their is no energy, legs, mobility, pace, pressing or speed in the centre of park.

AM: L Alberto(21) should never have been brought to club, we had Suso(20) and Shelvey(21) at club, the 6.7M spent on him, should have been spent on class pacey quality quick left footed left back. Suso is better player than Alberto and should be given chance next season.

RW: O Assaidi(25) is a class quality player, but he is a top 11-18 premiership player, he is not a top 1- 5 team player.

FD: I Aspas(26) was a class quality player in spain but every time he has played for us this season, he has looked pathetic and way out of his depth. And he simply is not a top 1- 5 club player

FD: F Borini(22) is a class good young striker, but he is not a top 1- 5 club striker, we need better quality competition at club for Sturridge(24) and Suarez(27)

The players mentioned above should all be shipped out and cleared off the books, so that 9 players of higher class and quality can be brought to club.

Spurs strengthened wrong areas with wrong players, Bale was game changer and match winner. How players out of the 8 they brought to their club was match winner? The players i have said we should bring in are better than what we have above.

  33. Are you comical? Its not just a name that makes player? Two years ago, did anyone know about Alaba? Now he is one of the most feared full backs in world? N Clyne(23) in next year or two will be Englands first choice right back defensively is better than Johnson, Jones, Smalling and Walker.

M Richards has been injury prone and has never got back to the standard he set 6-7 years ago when he first made the grade at city.

Some of the best wingers in world football with have tougher task of beating clyne(23) than most RB's in the league. The best RB in league is Zabaleta of Man City. As he is as good defending as attacking. Clyne(23) needs to improve his attacking but as defender/ defensively he is sound.

Davies(20) is class quick young solid left footed left back, he would offer J Enrique(27) good competition for his place, then in next year or two he would take over.

  34. Alright player, what about Konoplyanka? SSeriously need to strengthen our defence.

  35. I don't think telling will be a Alberto mark 2 seeing as Alberto was loaned out to a second division side whereas Telli has stayed at barca and managed to come on as a sub . I think he would be a good buy for that price

  38. Ive been away for a hol and come back to this nonsense. His pass to Gerard was not a problem whatsoever. I didn't think he had the geatest game against Chelsea (not winning enough in the air for me) but his passing was not an issue at all. Gerard slipped after taking his eye of the ball. No ones fault really. Trying to throw blame his way is just trying to justify something that has been hard to do. Agger fan I bet?

Jury is out on Sakho I will admit. I like the lad but feel he does have to improve on recent games. This mythical thing Jaimie peddles about Sakho's mere presence in the team leading to others making mistakes is far from proven but the relationship between the two big Ss does seem to need some work.

    ReplyDelete
  39. He makes more one touch passes than any of our other defenders.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Skrtel has made lots of errors. Yes he has been our best defender but is that the tallest dwarf contest we are talking about? Skrte's propensity to drop deeper and deeper causes us problems it creates space between midfield and defence to opposition to exploit. I was saying that earlier in the season and recently it has been evident again. Pressure perhaps. He definitley had a really good purple patch for a long period but the worry is that it may have ended.

Sakho attacks on the front foot most of the time and that is one reason I like him. He clearly has his problems too. One I think is concentration.

I think Rodgers definitely has to take some blame. Look at the counter attack Palace made. We had no reason to have committed that many players. They all looked like they wanted to get the goal difference down! That is bananas and must be coming from Rodgers.

I disagree about DMs not one of Allen, Gerard and Lucas are a DM at all. All have played in front of the back four and done a job but none are of the Mascherano Makelele type and I don't mean in quality I mean in actual role. None are a destroyer at all. Lucas has done the closest job to this but was certainly not playing that role against Palace. That role doesn't even exist in a Rodgers team.

  41. No need to worry,we are an attractive proposition to young talented footballers. If players want to play in an exciting, free flowing attacking team, then Liverpool it is! Some players are driven by £s,if so then we wouldn't want them anyway. I've a list of players as long as my arm, that would improve the team, but I don't know what motivates them? Some of the players we've been linked with play for Bayern, but the sound bites coming from them are not good as they seem to be content in staying there and not getting any playing time?!

Sakho is never and will never be the quality we need. no wonder when he left PSG, Silva, PSG current captain said that he wont be missed in the PSG squad..Imagining the aged Alex who left chelsea for a playing time was able to comfortably put our 19 million euros defender on constant bench and someone will tell me that Sakho is not crap
