Secret Transfer Trip 3: BR flies out to watch €10m star Beckenbauer called 'superb'

In recent weeks, Brendan Rodgers has reportedly undertaken personal scouting trips to watch Benfica attacker Rodrigo, and Bayer Leverkusen starlet Julian Brandt. Well, it seems that the Reds boss enjoys this side of the job, and he's now made a 'personal check' on South Korean star Son Heung-Min.

According to The Mirror over the weekend:

"Brendan Rodgers is keen on South Korean star Son Heung-min and has just made a personal check on the Bayer Leverkusen forward"

Rodgers was attended Leverkusen's game with Hamburg on Friday 4th April, so it's conceivable he was there to watch Son.

Liverpool have relentlessly pursued Son over the last two years, and in November 2012, former Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Rafael Van Der Vaart claimed that the Reds put in a put in a huge offer for the attacker. He told German newspaper BILD:

"It is tempting when Liverpool informs you of a twenty million offer, but he [Son] must stay here!"

VDV played alongside Son at Hamburg, so he would've been in a great position to know of Liverpool's bid, and there's no reason to think he'd lie publicly about something like that.

Son's Agent, Thies Bleimeister, also confirmed Liverpool's 'concrete' interest. After the 21-year old signed for Leverkusen in a €10m deal, he told Bild:

"Liverpool and Tottenham were interested in concrete terms. I think, at clubs like Liverpool and Tottenham, he would also be able to play, [but] Leverkusen is the right step to develop. The Premier League could someday be the goal"

Son arguably made the right decision here. He probably would've earned more at Spurs or Liverpool - two clubs that are more prestigious than Leverkusen - but it seems he put his personal development ahead of greed, which is rather refreshing.

Despite Sami Hyypia's merciless sacking, Leverkusen are still 4th in the Bundesliga table, and Son is playing well in his maiden season at the club, and so far, he's contributed 11 goals/6 assists in 39 apps.

Son also fits the Rodgers template for attacking players. He is versatile, and can play on the left; right; behind the striker, or even as a main striker. When asked to describe his best position, Son explained:

"I don't care where I play. The main thing is I'm in the game. I can play as a second striker or behind. What the coach says, I'll do. I don't have a favorite position. I'll be anywhere and always on the throttle."

German legend Franz Beckenbauer is a fan of the exciting attacker, and in an interview Hamburger Morgenpost last year, he raved:

"He is superb player. I really like the way he plays: Fast and dynamic. He not only scores goals, but also makes beautiful goals"

Hyypia signed Son for Leverkusen, and now that he's no longer in charge, perhaps Son might consider leaving? When push comes to shove, I doubt he'll be able to turn down the champions of England ;-)

On a related note: I can't wait to see Son play at the World Cup. South Korea are always entertaining to watch at major tournaments, and I'm sure this year will be no exception.

  1. He would be a great addition for two reasons, the first and most important being that he's an excellent player and ticks all the boxes for what FSG looks for in a transfer target. Second though, he would do for us what Park did for Man U all those years...increased exposure in Asia, which is great for the business.

  2. Yes a long term interest in him, and Sammy was at the game Sunday, would have filled us in on who to go for.

  7. has anybody seen this 38mil bid for Barkley supposedly being prepared.

i know it is crazy. but surely Everton couldn't pass that up. if they do make champions league, that money combined could give them enough to put together a team that could sustain cl football. i would want him. would anybody else?

  8. This kid is a superb talent...would love to see him in a Liverpool Jersey...Even it's gud for the Asian Fan Base Our Club has got...

  9. This boy is good on both feet. He can dribble and score left or right. Defenders get beat because he switches left to right with ease. Get this Sonofa.....

  10. Wellcome home pepe

  11. Reina a back up to Mignolet?
You're on drugs. He's twice the keeper Mignolet will ever be. Reina is LESS error prone than Mig plus he can cope with a backpass and can kick a ball accurately.
We need ALL the keepers replacing, as well as most of the defenders. We should make Spurs an offer on Lloris... I'd even take Carson back over Mignolet.

  12. I agree the possible move to Barca is what appears to have brought matters to a head but none of us know the details to be sure why they ended up as they are now It is far from an ideal situation and some of the responsiility for that must rest with BR. You may recall some odd statements about competition etc from BR and then Pepe's letter suggesting he'sd been let down
    .
I agree though with the the long held view that no one person is bigger than the club. This also means if there is a falling out with the manager it is only right that the player either needs to back down or go, So no complaints there either. I just find it sad that it has turned out the way it has.

As for your last point we may not have a choice but to pay him to sit on the bench if no one is willing to pay his wages and he decides to see his contract out.

  14. I think Reina is a top top keeper. In his prime he had everything! But he's definately dipped for us since Benitez left.. So I think we should, and have moved on. Miggs has been awesome this season (IMO) epic saves against stoke (penalty) and Benteke (2nd game of season - last 10 mins) ye he's made mistakes, but so has everyone this season.

But I think Reina is worth twice as much as what's been thrown around.. He's a modern day footballer, good with feet, commanding... not an easy find these days!

Ok sometimes its good to have experience goalkeeper like pepe in our squad it really helps Simon to prove him wrong or to work harder or when he injured we need a stronger keeper.there is no need to buy another diva while we have Reina. let spend our money wisely, let us buy our strong anchorman who need to help Liverpool.let him stay l love him he help Me to remember those golden moment when beat Madrid, man U,arsenal,Chelsea and so on in uefa champions league

  16. He has saved us in games a lot more than he has made mistakes.

  17. he would be good signing but Roberto Firmino is clearly the better option. theres some articles saying LFC want to bid £38M for Ross Barkley. and despite the rivalry theyll make an offer Everton cant refuse. with the Anfield faithful Barkley will be some player. he will add the same counter attacking threat BR has used to perfection. i would swap Joe Allen and £25M for Ross Barkley. he has clear world class potential and has been magnificent this season. Sterling has been the standout young player of the season, but Barkley has played well from Day 1 of the season and is crucial to Evertons top 4 finish. Ross Barkley or Roberto Firmino or both. But Sterling has been a revelatrion in alot of the 3 positions behind the striker. RW, AM no 10, LW he has turnt up without fail. he is looking a very deadly number 10 at the minute as his quick pace can always start a counter.

  18. Mignolet's distribution isn't a patch on Reina. With the way we attack teams, Reina could orchestrate counter attacks with his pinpoint distribution whether kicking or throwing.

Even if Reina does not return I think there is room to upgrade or at the very least challenge Mignolet. He has been good but I think he has some glaring weak points.

  19. I just went on the Utd fb page to see their hillsborough tribute. Nearly every comment on that photo is f**king bitter, disgraceful rubbish from Utd fans saying things like 'JFT39', and pointing out how we don't deserve respect because a minority of Liverpool fans mock Munich. Jesus, if people are talking about a minority, that was pretty big minority on there...

  20. I like the idea of having a Korean player in our squad. Especially up front. They have a fantastic attitude and the commercial possibilities are not bad either.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Barkley has 6 goals and no assists, how can you say he has been good throughout? He had a 6 week period around February where Osman starteded ahead of him consistently.Plus we have the magician continuo, if continuo was English hed be with 50 million lol

    ReplyDelete
  22. I like his attitude. If we're looking for a third striker, why not Jordan Rhodes?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think today of all days was the worst possible time to publish a, probably rubbish, story like that. The city stands as one today and that should not be disturbed by rumour mongering journalists.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Personally I believe the internet is not the right place to get a good impression of what the majority of supporters of a club think.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Because he ain't that good

  26. sell pepe for about 5-6 mill and sign Ochoa on a free as back up,
very talented keeper that plays for mexico about 28 and is very ambitious although we would be signing him as back up Ochoa would look to over take mignolet.

  27. His goal production over the long haul says different. If this season were a one-off, I might agree...like Danny Ings...but he has been scoring by the bucketfull for 5 years now.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Would be a very good addition. He is bigger than some of our forwards, looks to have decent pace and can score goals. Him being Korean will give us that extra limelight in the east which being in the CL we will need to make the most of.

  29. I think him or shaqiri would be perfect the Work ethic of Asian players is always good also he's slot better option then that overrated £30million markovic

  30. Morata from real madrid mate this kid has everthing. Bid of 20'mil should be enough.

  31. I remember one of those earlier articles and at the time I argued that Reina should stay because his best qualities (in my opinion organisation, distribution and generally owning the box) are what Simon needs to improve on and having Pepe challenging him and pushing him everyday could only be a good thing for the club. I'm surprised only 51% of people want him back. My opinion hasn't changed, however I do recognise that there are other factors in play such as Reina's wages and that fact that Brendan will have to show him some serious love to get him to come back and put in 100% effort.

    ReplyDelete
  32. But this kid is playing for a top side in a top league and Rhodes has never played higher than the Championship. There has to be a reason why, at 24, he stil hasn't made the move to the PL. Even if big clubs would not take a risk, you'd expect the likes of Cardiff to have a punt.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Only 20 million? I bet you if you post that on John Henry's twitter account he'll transfer the money over rightaway. I mean, what's 20 million really.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Pepe won't want 2 come back playing no 2 to Mig, personally when i compare both keepers and look how were playing. Pepe would help us destroy teams on the counter attack with his distribution, which is as good as ive ever seen from a keeper. However his personallity when conceding a goal was dire,Even when he was at fault, he blamed anyone but himself, which in my opinion caused a few resentments from the rest of his team mates Id still love 2 see him back because his passion for Liverpool was there for all to see plus he is one of the best keepers in position in the world and he aint a bad shot stopper either.

  35. Son is a fantastic talent and would be an excellent player for us to sign if we could. Would love to have him at the club.

  36. the next goalkeeper for LFC is Asmir Begović from stoke city.

  37. In addition to the new centre back and defensive midfielder, and maybe even the new left back with Flanno moving to right back.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I didn't say it was a majority of Utd fans. I'm just talking about one instance where unfortunately the minority was a bit larger than anyone would have liked.

  39. Never gonna happen

  40. I know it is hard to believe. Rovers offered him 8M and don't know if he signed. We're talking a#3or 4 striker here...someone to get us victories in LC and FA Cup matches to rest SAD for bigger matches. He is the featured striker on an English team with a PL pedigree. He can beat Huddlesfield and Bournemouth because he already has. I think he would fit right in.

    ReplyDelete
  41. oh yeah you work on either transfer committee? how about for either club? are you the agent maybe.

anything is possible especially for a club that could use that money. get over yourself, nothing is written stone.
