Liverpool striker Luis Suarez got his customary goal against Norwich City today, but as is increasingly evident over the last few games, the gamesmanship that blighted Uruguayan's first couple of seasons at Anfield seems to be slowly creeping back into his game.
For the most part, Suarez's on-field behaviour this season is exemplary. He has clearly made a great effort to cut out the diving/play-acting, and deserves great credit for that, but today, he regressed once again.
Below is an example of possible play-acting during the vital 3-2 victory over Norwich:
Before anyone gets in a tizz, I haven't posted this to criticise Suarez - I just think it's hilariously funny :-D
Suarez goes down like he's been hit by a truck, but as soon as LFC have the slightest hint of an advantage, he's back on his feet instantly, and rushing towards goal.
It's pure comedy, and all this clip needs is a gaudy, vaudeville 1920s silent-era soundtrack, and it'll be worthy of Buster Keaton at his best.
I'll choose to be charitable here, though: Perhaps Suarez was genuinely taken out, but given his unparalleled toughness on the pitch, he shrugged off the obvious pain and went after the ball. Typical killer instinct.
It is quite incredible how Suarez never gets injured, though. He's clattered and hacked in every single game and never seems to succumb. Daniel Sturridge, on the other hand, is a glass figurine next to Suarez.
When all is said and done though, to reach 30 Premier League goals is a fantastic achievement. Suarez is a joy to watch, and hopefully he'll put Chelsea to the sword next week.

He was caught high on the shin, and it was a minimum yellow card.
ReplyDeleteDived in the commercial.....very tongue in cheek. Doesn't take himself too seriously (did you see his interview of Paul McCartney?) except on the football pitch, where his will to win is unequalled by any sportsman that I can ever think of.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that'll lead to some debate! ;-)
You're an idiot - you run this site to make money off the back of Liverpool FC, nothing else.
ReplyDeleteBefore anyone goes on a rage, it's clearly stated that this wasn't "posted to criticize Suarez". On a funny note, he miraculously healed. It was a definite foul as the challenge was bad.
ReplyDeleteBut fortunately not as bad as the acting
ReplyDeleteAbsolute rubbish. The tackle by which Suarez was caught was late, high, dangerous, and arguably deserving of a red card. Suarez was definitely hurt by the challenge and was clearly inhibited for the rest of the match. I'm beginning to wonder whether Luis Suarez once ran over your pet rabbit or ran off with your wife. This is not even the first attack you've made on the player this weekend. Give it a rest, because you really are making a fool of yourself.
ReplyDeleteyeah we can highlight suarez going down all we want. but there was couple of very questionable challenges, the on on allen with yellow, and not sure who against who, but there was a two footed lunge from norwich player, i remember that cause i was screaming at the telly very loudly.
ReplyDeleteim sure someone who wasnt as emotional as i can highlight the incident
i think it was a rough challenge, no matter the play acting. Luis definetly felt that. and i think its just as in the post -sarcastically?- presented, he got up and played trough the attack as the ref forgot to whistle.
ReplyDeleteWow, player gets kicked and rolls around. Shocking!
ReplyDeleteIn the words of Fergie, "He coulda killed the boy"
ReplyDeleteSoooo...on to next week. The team with the most goals plays the team that has conceded the least. Classic match-up. In these matches it is usually the team with the best defense that wins. We need to break that general rule of thumb.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that you can capture it all in a single vine video says it all. 6 second mirical
ReplyDeleteI See your easter miracle, and raise with this:

Think he got clipped, but his super human, wolverine-like regeneration powers went into overdrive and allowed him to get up. Perfectly logical conclusion.
In LaLiga, resurrections happen every day.
ReplyDeleteHe was wacked hard. Decided to forget about the pain for an advantage you dope!! Thank your lucky stars he's on our team.
ReplyDeletethank christ, i thought you were trying to bag him, which would actually be unfair in this instance. He copped really painful hit to his leg/foot, but when a big gaping oppurtunity for goal presents itself like that, other instincts take over and you just go all out. No gamesmanship!
ReplyDeleteAlso, he starts to recover before the ball is actually played to him. He sits up to see what's happening on the pitch, and once the ball is played to him, he has already stopped rolling around on the ground.
ReplyDeleteAfter the ball went out you could see he was still in pain. He was hobbling and grimising
ReplyDeleteHe does this regularly, I'm surprised this is the first time you noticed. It's "gamesmanship" indeed and he often seems to do this to both ensure he gets the foul and also try to fool defenders into thinking he's not a threat. The guy is truly made of steel, probably due to all those years of playing rough games on rubbish pitches in Uruguay. I'll let him have this, if it's the worst that he does.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Eto'o starts will there be a bit of retribution for last match hack he took on Suarez? Or at least the ref will be watching him a bit closer.
ReplyDeleteReally?
ReplyDeleteYes I cannot ever recall him doing that before when feigning injury!. The best I can say is it was a foul but what followed was pure comedy. Sorry
ReplyDeleteI do every day, but that was pure comedy.
ReplyDeleteThere is no reason for him to feign injury a minute after the play is over and no foul has been called. Sorry!
ReplyDeleteThe advert he did when he works in the office still makes me laugh lol
ReplyDeleteYes he was caught however he did go down in a theatrical manner and the way he jumped back up was a Easter miracle.
Saying all of this, considering how often he is fouled and the number of games he plays I am amazed how he keeps going without getting injured.
Well yes really. You could see he was still limping with pain after the goal opportunity passed, but no doubt a killer instinct took hold of him when he realised he had to get up and help score a goal.
ReplyDeleteWe've only ever feign an injury immediately after he gets off the ground. He was limping around for at least a minute after even that goal scoring chance passed.
ReplyDeleteMr. Marriner could have given at least three yellow cards in the first half to Norwich for some very rash challenges,i'm just glad our players did not get too seriously hurt or it would have definitely dampened the mood.
ReplyDeleteMy point exactly. We all know he is one of the biggest play actors around, but in this instance, i think he felt that tackle.
