Transfer Update: LFC to bid for 'excellent' £6m star Redknapp hailed as a 'warrior'.

After two clean sheets in a row, poor defending against Cardiff City (principally from from Daniel Agger and Jon Flanagan) sabotaged Liverpool's brief run of defensive solidity, and with the summer transfer window looming, it seems likely that Reds boss Brendan Rodgers will look to sign yet another central defender to solve this ongoing problem. The likes of Steven Caulker and Thomas Hinteregger are currently linked with summer moves to Anfield, the latest name to enter the fray is West Ham star Winston Reid.

According to multiple sources today, including the Daily Mail, and The Mirror:

"West Ham centre back Winston Reid is...a summer transfer target [for Liverpool].

"Arsenal are monitoring the 25-year-old's situation, but Liverpool are set to be the first to firm up their interest with a bid'"

£6m-rated Reid is reportedly upset at becoming a bit-part player for the Hammers after his recent return from injury, and consequently wants out of Upton Park. Some info about Reid:

* Current contract expires in 2015
* Captain of the New Zealand national team.
* Won West Ham's 'Player of the Year' award in 2013.
* 84 appearances for West Ham since 2010.
* Averages 28 appearances per season.
* 6 goals 3 assists.

When asked about Reid's first-team future in February, hammers boss Sam Allardyce made it clear that the defender faced an uphill struggle to re-establish himself in the team. He told reporters:

"Winston Reid is chomping at the bit on the bench but there's nothing you can do when the team is winning. It's disappointing [for him] but my two centre-halves are playing ever so well."

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp rates Reid, and at the end of last season, he named the defender as one of his players of the season. He told the Daily Mail:

"Winston Reid...has been excellent alongside James Collins. Reid is a warrior defender who can look ungainly but rarely makes mistakes"

Possible replacement for Daniel Agger, or Kolo Toure...?

  1. Don't know about Reid but I do have a feeling Agger won't be in the starting 11 next season.

  2. You'll need to bid hugely more than 6m

    At leAst double, probably more

  3. Well this one's outta left field. Winston Reid, Liverpool player... nope, can't quite see it!

  4. No player who can't get in to the WH side will get even near our side. Skrtel is having a good season and Sakho is there whenever the chance arrives. We have Wisdom an Ilori on loan too. Not even sure why I felt this needed saying.

  5. Point is he should be in the West Ham side. Thomkins has been gash and should be on the bench.

  6. Dnt think Reid is the answer although I do agree Agger will be gone. IMO Ilori has already been bought and should be ready for 1st team next year. Sakho is already at the club also.

  7. in all honesty I think the main problem with the leaky defence is there is no consistency. at the start of the season it was messing with formations, then injuries. it seems like between agger and sakho when one gets injured and finally heals the other falls. I think it made a dent in Agger's form too. we also open ourselves up on the attack and we get caught deep sometimes which doesn't allow us to collaspe the space in time if the opposition is pressing and working together.

with that said Chelsea will be interesting. Mourinho, even though i hate him, is a mastermind of setting up against teams like us. it is the game I look forward to most every year, now it actually has meaning.

  9. Agreed, I think Agger does need a run to get his form back, but every season he seems to struggle with injuries, so I think Sakho need to be brought back in to the starting 11 to establish him again as our 1st choice centre back. On paper I'd have Agger next to him, but Skrtal keeps scoring! Also massive respect to Stevie G for adapting quickly to become a great (attacking) holding midfielder, but I wonder if we'd be leaking as many goals if Lucas was back in the side?

  10. When you have sakho, toure, ilori - would it make sense to purchase another cd? Why not strengthen left back or cm.
