In the summer of 2012, Tottenham Hotspur infamously beat Liverpool to the signing of Gylfi Sigurdsson, a player who - at the time - seemed destined to follow Brendan Rodgers to Anfield. It wasn't to be, and the Icelandic International later explained that he chose Spurs because he was 'impressed with club's plans for the coming years'. Well, after a disappointing couple of years in London, does Sigurdsson regret snubbing LFC?
When asked today whether he made a mistake choosing Spurs over Liverpool, Sigurdsson told the Evening Standard:
"People have asked me that, but at the time I was really happy to come to Tottenham, and I still am. I'm really enjoying it [and] Hopefully in the next couple of years it will be really good".
Realistically, what else is Sigurdsson going to say? He may have been 'impressed' with Spurs' 'plans for the coming years', but those plans are now floating in the toilet, and if things go well on Sunday, LFC could conceivably pull the chain on Spurs' season.
Things look pretty bleak for Spurs at the moment. LFC and Everton on the rise; Chelsea, Arsenal, and Man City will surely strengthen this summer, and Man United will probably get their act together next season, too. As such, it seems likely that Spurs will be struggling to maintain a top six position for the foreseeable future.
Additionally, I wouldn't be surprised if Sigurdsson - who cost Spurs €10m - finds himself on the transfer list this summer. A new manager is inevitable, and whoever it is will almost certainly want to clear the decks, and the midfielder is hardly integral to Spurs' future.
Could Rodgers go in for Sigurdsson again? Earlier this season, the Liverpool Echo claimed that LFC's boss still retained a desire to bring the Icelander to Anfield:
"Brendan Rodgers is keen to be reunited with Gylfi Sigurdsson. Liverpool are ready to make formal approach in January for the player".
If Rodgers considered Sigurdsson in January, it's not beyond the realms of possibility he'll take another look in the summer. As I argued back in 2012, Sigurdsson is not (IMO) the type of player who is going to move Liverpool forward. He is yet another (comparatively) cheap 'nearly-man', who hasn't really done anything in the game, and the Reds need to sign attackers with a significantly better creative ratio. Will Spurs let Sigurdsson leave? A 'Spurs source' told the Liverpool Echo:
"It remains unclear whether Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will want to sell but business is business. Whatever he sells Gylfi for, there will be a decent mark-up."
I doubt that many LFC fans will be impressed if Rodgers pursues Sigurdsson this summer. The plain fact is he REJECTED Liverpool. He had the chance to come to Anfield, but stuck two-fingers up at the prospect. There are probably hundreds of players out there who would kill to play for the Reds, so why go after a player who isn't interested?
I have no doubt that, privately, Sigurdsson is casting a covetous eye at Liverpool right now, and he'll probably be sick to the stomach if the Reds go on and win the title.
Now I've said all that, he'll probably score the winner against LFC on Sunday...

May it be an own goal by him :)
ReplyDeleteThe ship has sailed for Sigurdsson. He chose money instead of having the chance to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world. No need to worry about Rodgers going back for him.
ReplyDeleteHe shows us no loyalty - tell him to get lost
ReplyDeleteTottenham are 100 per cent going to sack present manager at end of season
ReplyDeleteI still do not think mega money is going to be spent on our attack. There is no need for it. Maybe another versatile forward.
ReplyDeleteMoney should be splashed on 2 quality fullbacks.
Another flop who Spurs kindly took from us there is no way anyone wants him at Anfield sometimes u can be lucky missing out.,
ReplyDeleteI don't rate Sigurdsson at all. I think he is mediocre at best and the fact that he thought Spurs were a better prospect, is comical. Let him rot away with Spurs and their "future plans"... May The Reds march on and win the ultimate prize!
ReplyDeleteLet's turn some attention to some of the players who might be leaving.
ReplyDeleteOne of
Agger - Injury prone and Sakho surely will be our regular LCB next season
or
Skrtel - Depends if we sign another RCB or whether Ilori will be part of the setup next season
Enrique - looks like his career could be over
Johnson - Unless he gets offered or accepts new contract
Aspas - Not sure what to make of his situation
Borini - adds depth to our squad so reckon he will stay
Reina - As good as gone
Suso - Is he willing to sit on the bench now that he is getting regular football in Spain?
Lucas - What will happen to him if we sign another deep lying central midfielder? Also with Stevie occupying the deeper role will now see Lucas on the bench unless there are injuries or suspensions.
Alberto - Has loads of potential, could go out on loan
Moses - Will not be made a permanent signing
Cissokho - Will not be made a permanent signing
Cannot see any other players leaving. Wisdom and Coady's futures are also uncertain so they can be added to the list.
Sigurdsson's response is a fairly generic and predictable one, but understandable - he hasn't really got much choice but to say that he's happy with his decision, regardless of whether he believes it or not. He's little more than a bit-part player for Spurs, and would certainly provide nothing more than that for Liverpool. There are so many better alternatives. Spurs have made a real hash of their 'project' over the last couple of years with instability in management, totally indiscriminate transfer market activity and a glaring lack of a footballing ethos, not to mention the sale of their one standout player. Without wishing to crow too loudly, what player wouldn't want to play for Liverpool at the moment with such a bright looking future?
ReplyDeleteI mentioned yesterday of the mess Spurs have made in the 2013 transfer window. At them moment there is no direction at Spurs. Mid table mediocrity is on the way for them.
ReplyDeleteAgger will leave and if we can get Roma's Romagnoli as a back up then it would be great. We are also linked with Mateo Kovacic of Inter who is extremely talented(better than Coutinho some say) and can play in any of the 3 positions in MF. Skrtel and Ilori can do the job, I am not too sure about Skrtel but buying a whole new defence doesn't look like a idea. So Skrtel should stay on merit. Give Glen a new deal for a couple of years until Mclaughlin can take over but a new LB is a must, preferably Luke Shaw or Marcelo if Real go for Moreno,Flanno can be backup for both the positions. One of the Bender brothers for the defensive MF option and a versatile attacker like Firmino rather than Konoplyanka. I think Kelly,Coady, Reina , Aspas will be sold. Borini back, Suso on another loan and we will be set for the next season IMO.
ReplyDelete....so why did you say it!!!????
ReplyDeleteOnly 100% . The starting point when talking aout anything footall related is110%...... but I agree ......:-)
ReplyDeleteBullShit he's happy at Spurs. He is gutted no doubt that he didn't choose Liverpool. I don't want to see him at the club, didn't want him then, definitely don't want him now.
ReplyDeleteAnd if Levy is expecting a mark-up on €10m, I think he will be disappointed.
He's not exactly set the world alight this season, and will be considered another on the long list of Spurs flops over the last couple of seasons.
Average player for an average team.
We have Joe Allen. We don't need Joe Allensson too. I think a second year at the helm of LFC has given BR some perspective on talent level.
ReplyDeleteI see Frirmino has signed a new contract. That is him off the list then.
ReplyDeleteSo it's actually true! hahahahah!
ReplyDeleteGoing to be the funniest thing to have ever flown over old toilet :-)
ReplyDeleteI agree with the people saying spurs have made an arse up in the market lately. Is a bit worrying that we nearly bought some of them though. Brendan's doing a lot right at the moment, I hope he can carry that onto transfers too.
ReplyDeleteA high Street Bookies (Powers I think) has hired a plane to follow it, but are not saying what the message is, that could be hilarious.
ReplyDeleteGo Aston Villa. Make my day!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's downright embarrassing and reflects really poorly on United fans. Sure, you're allowed to voice your opinion about the manager, but resorting to absolutely disrespectful acts like this is just unfairly humiliating for Moyes. I really feel sorry for him. He doesn't deserve this, because he's trying the best he can.
ReplyDeleteFeel a little sorry for Moyes, but have no sympathy for United as a club, their supporters or the players. Deserve everything they get.
ReplyDeleteThis makes the treatment of Roy Hodgson look like childs play but Moyes is clearly out of his depth.
ReplyDeleteThe fans who have arranged for this banner to make a mockery of Moyes even took a stab at Ferguson when they lost to City. Their time has come. Utd will never be the same again.
Good article in the Independent today by Ian Herbert on BR. Going back to that ridiculous Being:Liverpool documentary. Some of the sound bites don't sound so farcical now.
ReplyDeleteHe's bringing a lot of it on himself. Sure he inherited a poor Utd squad. But how could any United manager go into a game against at Old Trafford saying we were favourites? Suicide. Or the "well I knew it was going to be hard, but not this hard" line was ill advised.
ReplyDeleteWhen he talks, you can't even be sure he believes what he's saying, let alone the players and fans.
Yep, just saw the plane. You can even hear it on the tv as they play. Hilarious, but disgraceful.
ReplyDeleteI don't doubt that he's done a poor job, but no one deserves to be humiliated like that. He didn't jump and down yelling 'pick me pick me'. He was chosen,he couldn't refuse and he's done his best.
ReplyDeleteThere's quite a few empty seats in the OT...
ReplyDeleteI wonder if that plastic plane banner is made out of recycled plastic mancs?
ReplyDeleteNo you are right, common decency dictates that. Yet i find it hard to feel sorry for him. Guess the hatred has been bred in over the last 20 years of slagging and humiliation by Utd fans and that red nosed belligerant d*ck.
ReplyDeleteLets hope not!
ReplyDeleteI think at the time we went for him we were a much different team. Is he really the kind of player who we need today? Since then we've gone for some serious class like Mhkitaryan and Costa. Those are the players we're looking for again this summer, not some guy who can't even necessarily hold down a regular spot for Spurs. We're about to reaffirm a place in the European elite and he's just not good enough.
ReplyDeleteThe insanity started with the sacking of Rednapp. If it aint broke don't fix it. Levy has always been a nasty type of owner.
ReplyDeleteWe don't want him
