Transfer Boost: €20m attacking 'phenomenon' wants to 'play more'. Chance for LFC...?

Earlier this month, Italian newspaper Tutto Mercato claimed that Liverpool are planning a €20m offer for Udinese striker Luis Muriel, who is reportedly Brendan Rodgers' top summer transfer target. The Reds have scouted Muriel regularly this year, and his Agent has hinted that the Colombian striker is frustrated in Italy, which may be good news for LFC.

When asked last night about interest from Liverpool and Juventus, Muriel's Agent, Helmuth Wennin, told TMW:

"The future? At the moment we are not thinking about it. He [Muriel] loves football and he wants to play more, but he respects the coach's decisions"

With the World Cup looming, Muriel's frustration is understandable, and if his lack of regular game time leads to him missing out on Colombia's final squad, then it will almost certainly lead to the striker leaving Udinese this summer. After all, why would he stay with a club that destroyed his World Cup dream?

Liverpool monitored Muriel last summer, with multiple reports claiming that Reds planned to bring him in to replace Luis Suarez. When specifically asked in September about Liverpool's interest, Muriel's Agent, Helmut Wennin, told calcionews24:

“Muriel is a player of talent and potential, so I think it is normal that big clubs want him."

When quizzed about LFC's interest after Colombia's 1-0 victory against Serbia in January, Muriel appeared open to a move away at some point. He told Eldeportivo:

"The Pozzo family supported me and wants me to have another year in Udine. This is what they told me. The idea is to grow, and in the future to go to a bigger club".

Antonio Di Natale - who describes Muriel as a 'phenomenon' - is retiring at the end of this season, so Udinese will probably want to keep hold of Muriel, who may also see the Italian's departure as an opportunity to stake his claim for a regular first team place.

Having said that, Victor Moses and Iago Aspas are likely to leave Anfield this summer, which opens up a vacancy for an attacking player, though after his struggles this season, I doubt Muriel will fancy being a bench-warmer at Anfield.

The Colombian has 4 goals/1 assist in 19 serie appearances this season, which isn't that great. Better option than Moses/Aspas...?

  1. I would honestly prefer benteke. He might be more expensive but he is epl tested and would be a great piece of business In my opinion.

  2. Muriel would be an excellent addition to the side he adds attacking versatility and has plenty of skill seems a great investment at 15 million will only go up.
A player like this is a must if the team is to compete on all fronts with C.L looking more likely by the week.

  3. I know it's wrong but I just cannot see me buying a shirt with "Muriel" on the back.

  5. Udinese is way down the Serie A standings with a -9 GD. If this kid isn't even geting a chance to help this team, why does anybody think he's going to be any good as even a third striker in the PL? Why don't we look closer to home and at least find a goal scorer that has shown he knows a thing or two about English football? If we're looking for somebody who can score goals in League Cup and early FA Cup action or to give SAS a rest against lesser PL teams, then why not look at somebody like Jordan Rhodes?

  6. He is only coming to Liverpool just to sit on the bench. I don't see how he will start in a striking position ahead of Suarez and Sturridge. Liverpool's priorities should be a winger, a left back (because Flannagan is sometimes over run in that position) a defensive Midfielder, and a decent center back.

  7. Muriel is a talented investment, but he'll have to deal with the fact that he'll have to fight for a spot. He's likely to be a sub for when injury, fitness, etc. issues come towards LFC with their star forwards.

  9. We need backup for Sturridge. He's injury prone and next season we really need someone who can step in if required especially with the amount of games we will be playing. Whether this guy is the answer who knows but a top striker needs to be bought this summer.
