'The Butterfly' to LFC? - BR sends Chief Scout to watch 'unstoppable' £12m attacker.

Liverpool's scouts seem to be all over the place at the moment, and the latest player watched by the Reds' scouting team is Benfica attacking midfielder Lazar Markovic.

According to the Daily Mail today:

"Liverpool have joined clubs watching Benfica's Lazar Markovic.

Chief scout Barry Hunter [watched] the 20-year-old play 75 minutes for Serbia in their recent 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland".

Liverpool considered signing Markovic - nicknamed 'the Butterfly' - in 2012, but were reportedly 'scared off' by the excessive price tag.

Soon after, the The Daily Mail claimed that LFC were one of a number of club's negotiating a deal for the Serbian playmaker:

"Liverpool, Arsenal and Inter Milan have all been negotiating with Partizan, who want a deal which eventually rises to around £14m based on appearances"

Unfortunately for the Reds, £12m-rated Markovic is a massive Chelsea fan, and has his heart set on a move to Stamford Bridge, as he revealed recently:

"Chelsea [is] my dream. I had all the pictures on my wall at home back to when they had Gianfranco Zola. And any time they are on TV I try to watch them. Chelsea are the best".

Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic is a big fan of his fellow countryman, and in February, he told O Jogo:

“He [Markovic] will mature and then he'll be unstoppable. It was great to have played with this fantastic kid for six months.”

Chelsea are overloaded with attacking midfielders, and with Oscar, Willian, Salah, Hazard, Schurrle etc in the squad, the chances of Markovic making a dent are practically nil. If he wants to go and sit on the bench for three years - or join the legions of other youngsters out on loan - then he should definitely choose Stamford Bridge.

The situation is slightly better at Liverpool. On the attacking midfielder front, Liverpool only really have Henderson, Sterling, and Coutinho as viable first-team options, and with Champions League football beckoning next season, there's plenty of scope for increased competition.

Stats for this season:

* 7 goals/0 assists in 30 apps.

No assists for an attacking midfielder? Not great.

  3. For £12m it would appear that Firmino and a couple of others we've been linked with might be better options. Especially given his stats and Mourinho's fondness for acquiring our targets.
