Late Deal? LFC eye unhappy €7m star who wanted Reds move last year. Replace Johnson...?

Last summer, Liverpool were constantly linked with a move for Ajax star Toby Aldeweireld, who ultimately ended up at Atletico Madrid, but prior to the move, the Dutch defender confirmed his interest in a move to Anfield. Things haven't gone so well for him in La Liga, and with the move turning into a bit of nightmare, Alderweireld is (seemingly) for sale once again, and reports suggest that the Reds are watching the situation.

According to The Daily Express:

* Atletico have offered Alderweireld to Napoli.

* Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs are monitoring the situation.

In an interview on Wednesday, the 24-year - who cost €7m last summer - revealed the depth of his unhappiness in Spain:

“I miss Ajax, their style of play, my ex-teammates...At Atleti, I'm unhappy if I’m not playing. The team is doing well and I continue to fight for my place, but I don’t think it’s my fault.”

In April 2013, Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported that Liverpool were monitoring Alderweireld, and claimed that the highly-rated central defender would 'prefer' a move to Anfield. Ajax director of football Marc Overmars also confirmed that Liverpool scouts are 'often present' at the Amsterdam Arena, scouting various players, Alderweireld among them.

Soon after, the Dutch defender told reporters:

"Usually I do not want to play for an English club that’s in mid-table, but, unlike Newcastle, Liverpool meet my criteria"

Then, in May, he told Nusport:

"I'm very selective in choosing my next club. I do not want to go to Manchester City because Kompany will play forever. Liverpool, however, has the potential to return to the top"

With the club's current defensive woes, it's clear that more solidity is needed at the back, but with Agger, Sakho, Toure and Agger in the squad, would Alderweireld get regular playing time?

One of the plus-points about a potential transfer is that the he can play as a right-back, and with Glen Johnson out now for an 'indefinite' - possibly till the end of the season - it's a position that needs to be filled.

I'm sure Alderweireld would be amenable to playing at right-back for the rest of the season, and then moving into the centre this summer when one of LFC's current centre-halves inevitably moves on.

Worth a bid...?

  1. This club is a joke, painful saying it but cant hide it anymore, just look at the transfer window, pure disgrace, fsg ayre and rodgers just foo ked up millions of fans day, just why we are being runned by heartless and clueless people, top teams just getting better and we cant get anyone when we need most, for how much longer will this go on, how much longer they will play with our feelings, isnt this enough already? Been a fan for 13 years now, tried to stay loyal and patient, but its the same sht every single season, nothing good happens, just more humiliation. I think soon I will stop watching lfc and stop watching football. Hurts but its enough, cant stand these faceless men anymore who think only for their pocket, soon as gerrard retires and suarez leaves im gonna leave too, dont care if you call me plastic or fake, go ahead love fsg and ayre, they will bring you trophies for sure!

  2. Why not?

With regards to forgoing Salah, according to the Independent (which I consider a reliable source) "Liverpool are understood to have offered a total of £15m for the player – when add-ons are included". If that's true, then I think that's more than reasonable for a player that's only had one stand out season in the Swiss league.

  5. Calm down mate we were only top of the league at xmas and we going to be in the mix for a top 4 place for the first time in 5 years. We got two of the best strikers in the world with a decent set of player behind them. Ok we seem to be missing out on top transfer targets at the moment but I'd rather get the right player than paying someone who is not worth it. Ha you think this is bad try supporting Liverpool during the Souness years or even worse just think where we were under Hodgson.

  6. 13 whole years eh? impressive.

  7. Hey mate you got anger problems!! Take a chill pill!

  8. for gods sake he want to come to liverpool so let him come he is a great player and 7 mill is a bargin ian ayre is overprotective with money. all the class players we could of got over the past few seasons its getting a joke now that we dont get them if you see players with a good future get them we missed out on salah so we should have back up players and not wait till the last day to try and get players. FACT it took us over 2 weeks to try and tempt salah it took chelsea 24 hours. come on liverpool we need players so get them in.

  9. Johnson may have been injured, but he has been looking disinterested ever since the contract negotiations didn't go his way. We needed competition for him and we should have gone for Alderweireld in the summer.
£7m is a bargain, he can cover RB and CB too when Coates goes and Toure runs out of legs. If we can't get Montoya, which is likely, then this is a good choice.

  10. I thought the same thing when I watched the interview.. Don't think I've ever heard a manager describing the length of time a player is set to be out as 'indefinite' ... Seems abit fishy to me.i think they have fallen out I don't think he's injured at all

  11. lol this made me chuckle. been a fan for 13 years and your getting upset now when we are actually having a semi-decent season?

how bad were u the last few seasons then? and i mean that in a jokey way ;)

  13. Not bothered by the salah deal and as for this article how could a player that never played at full back has limited skill on the ball and very little pace be a better option than Flanagan or Kelly

    ReplyDelete
  14. tend to agree with antifsg I have been a supporter for 62 yrs and it takes them 5 monthe to sus out players to come in January and 3 weeks to stuff so we don't get anyone.

  15. lfc got lucky over salah deal, turns out he could cause a lot of problems for chelsea.islam has no place in football, espeacailly those with radical veiws, dont judge my comment till you have done your home work.football is about the passion and fans.lfc see dont need these kind of so called human beings, does yossi still play fo chelsea, hope not.good ridance, salah. caeful what you wish for, B.R. 16. That's what I have been saying since he came back from his long term injury and the contract did materialized. Most of the goals scored on us have come through his side. I mean Suarez and Sterling have been coming to help his side and yet the LB is the bad side.

    ReplyDelete
  17. He has played fullback countless times for club and country.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Exactly. Alderweireld has played at fullback just as much as he at centre-back.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'd go as far as to say I'd prefer him at right back anyway. At Ajax he had a tendency to bomb forward quite a bit. He's quite attack minded to be a centre back..had scored a few worldies at Ajax as well if I remember rightly. Would be a decent signing.

    ReplyDelete
  20. If he can play the role ... however I'd be more inclined to buy a proper full back for the role if we're going to spend the money. Rodgers asks a lot of his wingers, they really need to be top quality.

    ReplyDelete
  21. interesting... there were reports of Glen wanting to leave and Arsenal were snooping around back in Dec.... interesting that Glen was also ill right before Arsenal game.... hmmmmm

  22. 'Ladies' in Malta had a statement for British sailors coming ashore when bargaining for their favours; "You English are all the same, all c**k and no money". Sadly, I have come to the conclusion that the LFC Board are similar in as much as they are "all talk and no money"! Shanks and Paisley would have had the deals sown up in the close season and the new birds would have flown in to roost in their new loft as soon as the window opened. Brendan Rodgers is still dithering with his 'L Plates' up and the Reds need better. When Rafa Benitez was sacked the Board should have installed a Manager of substance to lead our great club. Rodgers is simply not not up to the task. I would love to see Mr Henry endeavour to attract Marcello Lippi back from his sojourn in China to drive his (and our) club forward.

  23. You can't fall in love with a player before he even puts the red kit on. It is annoying to see teams hijack potential transfers, but the high profile misses like Dempsey, Sigurdsson, Soldado, Willian and others haven't particularly lit the world on fire. Even Alderweireld is saying he made a mistake. At some point a player is going to realize that LFC gives them a chance to play on a big stage.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Fully agreed, don't expect too much. Support MU is even better, they will be top 4 again at the final day..

    ReplyDelete
  25. Chopping and changing managers only works when you have an endless pit of money to reshape squads in the new managers image. Rodgers is doing a good job. Changing managers would set us back another few years. We need stability

    ReplyDelete
  26. Sorry we just don't see things the same way. If we are stable now we we must have sunk because we were holed below the waterline on at least two occasions in January The window provided the opportunity to add a defensive midfielder and a left back (now we need a right back too) so that the team could push on and challenge at the top again. But our manager broke the window and was dragged out through it by his mentor - a certain weedy little Portugeezer. Rodgers should have had the balls to pay over the odds for Salah and say to Chelsea - take that! Imagine letting them steal a player who seems unwilling to shake hands with their Owner, Chairman and ANOther. It should have been a 'gimme'. Rodgers is still in awe of the Geezer!
PS Please substitute "sewn" for "sown" in my earlier post.

  27. I get the impression Liverpool are trying to gun the home stretch with a car which has 3 wheels left, a tilt to one side, an engine that goes BANG BANG, driven by a superb driver.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Do you really think Rodgers gets involved in finances? He just identifies players (along with the transfer committee) it's Ayres job to negotiate with the selling club. I understand your sentiments though. As a club it's embarrassing how long they take to complete deals. Rodgers isn't to blame though I don't think

    ReplyDelete
  29. I am aware there is a Transfer Committee but Rodgers must be the cornerstone of that or he has no right to be called the 'Manager'?- Coach would be his job title. I'm sure you read where they had to await Mr Henry's visit to approve transfer funds. Had I been in Mr Henry's shoes I would have told him to recall some of the players he loaned out who are better than those he retained at Anfield. Now there is talk of loaning out Sterling - has LFC become a charitable institution. I'm sure you'll agree that Rodgers has wasted so much money buying players who were unfit for the first team that the Owner has sewn (got it right that time) up his pockets. Must turn in now - I've enjoyed the chat.

  30. Im concerned that you may be right.
The later part of last year all BR would say was we need to strengthen in jan, Strengthen in jan, More depth in jan.
Then Jan comes and he says there are no deals in progress and JH doesnt fly over until mid month to discuss finances.
I hope to we arent going to try and tough it out the rest of the season with our current squad.

  33. Worst day of 2014, Mata goes to Manure, our top transfer target to rich boys.

    ReplyDelete
  34. looks like Romulo could be the target. Not too bothered about Salah we really need to strengthen mid-field. Romulo would be a good buy he has played for Brazil before he went from Vasco da Gama to the Russian league and got lost. The Johnson saga is alarming I wish we had of sold him to Arsenal when they inquired he's useless to LFC and on very high wages.

    ReplyDelete
  35. why not leave now LFC doesn't need fickle fans.

    ReplyDelete
  36. What about his injury, been out for 18 months. that seems to me as a risk.

  41. this guy looks like a sturridge or coutinhio to me and always taut 12mill was a fair price considering what we wasted on illori and luis alberto (13mil)...and whom i objected to their buys cos i saw nothing that luis was bringing that suso didnt have and why we wasted money on soo many defenders in frustration of losing mkhtyryn ....but am pretty sure RODGERS IS NEVER going to complain about having a THING SQUAD EVER AGAIN! its really embarrasing as a top four contender when we have to make a substituon...our bench looks funny..lets hope we make top 4 and surez doesnt leave .what a week . just put up 12 mill on 1 jan. and get ur player!! do u have to wait till this happens ..always.

    ReplyDelete
  42. if u don't have the cash den do all your purchases early so u don't get into a transfer battle. that's alllllllll they asked for 12mill last year and seriously for a 20 year old with that blistering speed and pace ...come ooon.being up for 2weeks for this deal oh gosh.

    ReplyDelete
  43. It's not his fault but they lose games with him on the pitch and they top the table without him. It may not be his fault but clearly they have better players available. And THOSE are the ones we should be looking at. Not their stand ins.

    ReplyDelete
  44. i fear that days are coming where nobody will take a liverpool bid serious!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think best chance for Alder'd in Belgian national team is RB, because of the presence of Kompany, Verma'ln, Vetr'jen, Lombaerts & veteran Van Buyten. At 6'2", I am not sure how good a FB he can be, particularly as an attacker, but he 'll definitely be a better defender than GJ. I fully support FSG's stand on the GJ's contract situation - no club 'll give a 29 years old, injury prone, at best above average player another 100K+/week contract (unless the club is a bastard child of a Shiekh or Russian Mafia). Actually, I would be very happy if LFC sells GJ & use that money for Toby. Flanagan can be a solid backup & we have Mclaughlin developing.

Coming to Salah issue, I actually don't blame BR or FSG much. If a wicked & cunning but extremely capable person has abundance of money to spoil, he 'll do exactly what Mourinho did with Willian or as it looks Salah. But, that doesn't mean we 'll go crazy & pay over the board for a position not our priority. I am not sure if we are that desperate for Salah (neither I am sure that he 'll be that good in EPL). However, I 'll be extremely upset if FSG uses all these as a smoke screen not to spend in Jan.

If Mata goes to MU & Everton, Spurs keep their squad unscratched, almost certainly, we 'll not finish among top 4. Despite such a good start, if we don't finish among top 4 this time, I don't see us getting there in next 5 years either, because - 1. Suarez 'll not be with us, 2. in 20+ years we got MU at most vulnerable position, unless we stop them this year, we 'll not be able in near future, 3. Spurs & Everton can only get better, 4. We are not even close to MC, Chelsea & even Arsenal with Suarez. It's a decision time for FSG - do they want to spend 25m-35mn in this winter & buy 3/4 players to force a top 4, or risk mid table mediocrity for next decade. In that case, they should better look for a buyer.

  50. Patrick, I agree with most of what you have said and right now I am really livid with yet another transfer fiasco, we are starting to look like the team from the poor side of Town who are trying to play with the rich kids, I also think FSG, Ayre, Transfer Committee and Rodgers all believe that they can crack top four with a couple of good players and a host of "B" grade players who all think that because they play for Liverpool they are at Saurez's level.
I don't know that I agree that Rodgers will never again complain of a thin squad, I think thats exactly what he will do, and unless there's miracle signing this transfer window and if we fail with top four thats when the thin squad and injuries excuse will rear its ugly head.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Off topic (apologies Jaimie) ....on the issue of Salah signing for Chelsea, I was more than just a bit pissed off when I heard the news but then when I heard he had twice refused to shake hands with two Israeli players I though "thank heavens" all we need now is more negative publicity directed at Liverpool because he refuses to shake hands with someone.....on the lighter side I could see him lining up for Liverpool at the start of the game when everyone shakes hands and he stands in front of a player but withholds his handshake and then turns to Saurez (next to him) and says "Saurez its ok ...go ahead and bite him".
I am not sorry we didn't get him I am more concerned about our whole transfer philosophy, whilst I can understand the need to not get financially reckless, it does not make sense to me when you buy/loan rubbish players who can't get a game in there own Team and then go on to think you can crack top four

    ReplyDelete
  52. We have enough CB's. The only way we are going to sign more is if Skrtel or Agger leave.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yh he certainly would have a big say in player recommendation but the way I understand it is he would give a list of players and the financial guys will tell him which ones fit in with the budget and then it would be Ayre and whoever else deals with that side of things who go and negotiate deals. If they don't meet valuations or wages I don't think is Rodgers fault. Rodgers is judged on performances on the pitch not balance sheets. Since we don't have a DOF ayre is responsible for how much gets spent and negotiations. If he wasn't that role would be redundant! Look at the Dempsey debacle Rodgers was visibly annoyed. It's not his fault that ayre can't negotiate quickly and get these players over the line

    ReplyDelete
  54. Thought the Dempsey debacle was fixed but clearly it's not. Rodgers should have been upset with himself for moving Andy Carroll on before he bought a replacement. Rodgers has infested the club with second rate players who he signed and returned to Spain and elsewhere to gain experience? Let's get serious!
Am waiting for the day he advertises them on EBay!

Agree LFC have not the finances to chop and change managers.- that's was why it was so important to install one of the world's established manager's like Lippi give him the money and tell him to get on with it - NOT a tenderfoot feeling his way.

The Geezer did not stay at home and allow his executives to persuade Salah to sign for Chelsea! - I thought Rodgers had learnt at his knee?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Lots of rumours doing the rounds regarding this Romulo. Can't say I'm familiar with him myself, and he's recently had a long layoff through injury but he has been capped for Brazil 8 or 9 times. Looks tall and powerful. Maybe just what we need and he's available for 10mil supposedly.

    ReplyDelete
  56. That's cos he's crap and he aint gettin any younger. His response to looseing his england place and not being offered a big contract has been shameful. Got injured against the scum and decided it wasn't worth it. At least with kelly or flanno we get 100% effort.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I don't understand how this comment got 25 likes. It's terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I doubt we will sign any players this window now, salah was our best hope apart from reaching personal terms with Chelsea the deal is done. Chelsea can outbid us any time they want not much you can do about that! It strikes me we are not in a position to outbid anyone. We need to support our team whilst its rebuilt using the only means available to us, yes its gutting reading these reports but i will always be a red no matter what!!!!! The Liverpool way BUILD FROM WITHIN that means home grown talent which is what Brendan is all about lets get behind the team we have done brilliant so far lets keep it going, top four here we come. food for thought though Jose has been banging about liverpool he knows the writing is on the wall, got rattled i'd say .YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  59. I thought he was BELGIAN?? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  60. Shame to miss out on salah... Our price range and looked a decent player. However, there is a whole world of players out there, so on to the next one. Hopefully we can wrap a signing of two up soon! It is annoying. Could've been eriksen and salah for £19M- or £1M less than a Downing lol

    ReplyDelete
  61. Remember we were losing 3-0 at half time v Chesterfield in the Souness era.... Kozma came on as sub and orchestrated a legendary comeback for us to achieve a 4-4 draw.... every performance wasnt bad...just most of them!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I wish we could just quit talking about transfers. All the talk just ratchets up emotions and we don't really know anything factual except for the Salah bid. I wonder what kind of a response Salah will get at Anfield when and if he enters the pitch.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Overprotective with money?!?!...wouldnt you be if the manager had spent £50m on players who werent worthy of a place in the first 11:
£11m on Borini, £7m on Aspas, £7m on Llori, £15m on Allen, £6m on Alberto £3m on Assaidi, and to top that paid big loan fees for Sahin, Moses and Sakho

    ReplyDelete
  64. So salah would rather the money than a chance off a good career if Chelsea didn't play mata what makes salah think he'll get more game times atleast at liverpool he would be playing football not warming the bench ! As for Antifsg I think everyone is annoyed about not getting any signings yet but we've got to wait until the end of the season and see if fsg did mess up

    ReplyDelete
  65. Why are you getting wound up by the January transfer window? For me its a pointless window that creates unnecessary dramas and fans to over react because we havent signed anyone.
Okay, last January, we got two deals right and both players have been a success. But at the end of the day, if we want someone, we are going to pay a certain amount of money and it's upto the selling club and player to accept those terms. If they dont, then they move on.
People make it sound like the players are bigger than Liverpool FC. No player is bigger than Liverpool FC.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Do you never know when to stop talking Mr Rodgers? If you believe in Salah as much as you say you do put 20 big ones on FC Basel's table and hijack the hijackers BUT say no more in the meantime or you risk becoming a figure of fun with our supporters. Personally, I think you're pursuing the wrong team remedies.
Liverpool need a Mascherano type ballwinner/destroyer that can stay on the green stuff without being dismissed and a commanding centre back like Sammi Hyppia - everything else can be adjusted by stock players..
Come to think of it I would like the latter to take charge of the team if Lippi is unobtainable.

  69. It's always a risk buying players. Some work out, some don't. Borini and Assaidi are doing well at Sunderland and Stoke. Llori is still young. Allen is a decent player although £15m was probably too much to pay. The jury is still out on Aspas who was well liked at Celta Vigo but granted he hasn't contributed much yet. A lot of continentals seem to take about a year to settle IMO. And you are mixing up Sakho, who we bought, with Sissoko who we got on loan.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Yeah I am mate! Sorry about typo!
I think the thing I am concerned about is we repeatedly buy young players in the £7m - £12m bracket, and none of them with the exception of Sturridge and Coutinho have fitted in the first 11.
The rest are all for the future.
Future planning is great; but the balance needs to be there...we need to strengthen the first 11 now, and when we have been burnt repeatedly with youngsters new to the league not fitting into the team, I can understand Ayre/FSG being a little bit protective!

    ReplyDelete
  71. So when exactly did Toby become Dutch? Maybe that's why he's unhappy!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Willian was one of their best players against us and has impressed recently too. May have taken time to settle but does look like a player.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I am inclined to agree. Mourinho (the d!ck) said we went straight to Basel and offered and they agreed. I don't think we did enough, like the summer.

"I know the club has been working very hard to get players in. I'll leave that to them and see how they get on."

    ReplyDelete
  80. The Guardian are saying it is 11 raising to 16. So initial fee is 11.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I think he's still out for 6 to 8 weeks. This is a lot for the team but he must have had the 9 months he missed in 2011 from his ACL injury on his mind. Its small compared to that.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Why we never signed him and Eriksen i'll never know.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Yeah, i agree. Get Sammi in as manager. Rodgers is annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Eriksen has been average bordering on poor for Spurs. As at Ajax he has one good game and then he does nothing for three matches.

Toby is relatively a better player in my opinion. He's only a little small for a central defender. I'd see him as a right-back and maybe as a holding midfielder. He's a tenacious and fairly skilful player who loves to get involved in everything. I'd welcome him to Anfield.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Absolutely ridiculous, the pair of you.

  89. SUDEEP,
You post reflects what 95% of us feel. I am a financial officer for a US company so I understand being smart about how you spend money. Nevertheless, it has to be balanced by opportunistic decisiveness and the will to take action. From the fans vantage point, it feels as we are all talk, lots of indecision and while we dither away others pounce. Can you say, Negredo, Mihkitarian etc.....? I admit to being a bit disgusted and frustrated......
