It's January, and the transfer rumours just keep on coming, and today, Liverpool are reportedly lining up a bid for Roma striker Mattia Destro.
According to The Mirror today:
"[Liverpool] are...readying a bid for Roma forward Mattia Destro.
"The 22-year-old is attracting interest from Arsenal and Spurs, and the Reds are preparing to enter the race"
After the failure of Fabio Borini to make an impact at Anfield, you'd think that Brendan Rodgers would be wary of signing another striker with experience of Serie A.
Having said that, though, Liverpool's luck with Italian-based players has to change at some point, right? :-)
Roma legend Francesco Totti certainly seems to think that Destro is the real deal, and last season, he told reporters:
"We're talking about a very promising young man here. The atmosphere at Siena is very different to that of Roma, but I think that within a couple of years, he [Destro] could become a top player."
Responding to Totti's comments, Destro returned the compliment. He told La Gazzetta dello Sport:
"I enjoyed his [Totti's] comments and I felt honoured. Totti is one of the best players I have ever played with. I believe that he can still play at the highest level for two to three more years.”
Some info about Destro, who cost Roma €16m in 2012:
* 6'1
* Roma used the cash from the Borini sale to sign him.
* 4 apps for the Italy national team.
* 32 goals for various Italy youth sides.
* 2013: Top scorer in the Coppa Italia with 5 goals
* 2006: top-scorer for Inter's Giovanissimi Nazionali team.
* 2007: second top-scorer for Inter's Allievi Nazionali team (behind Balotelli)
* 2010: 18 goals in the Campionato Nazionale Primavera Group Stage
* 2012: Siena's top scorer with 12 goals.
* Roma: 14 goals in 32 games so far.
Destro has missed most of this season with injury, but he made a goalscoring return against Fiorentina in December, banging in the winner to give his team a 2-1 victory. After the game, he enthused:
"Being out for so long was frustrating but finally I'm back. To play again was wonderful and to score was the icing on the cake"
Worth a bid?

No not for me and definately not for 16m. Totti said the similar things about Aquilani
ReplyDeleteuse him for my manager mode on fifa 14 he's a beast sooooo wouldn mind him in a liverpool jersey although that said just going according to what my fifa says lol
ReplyDeleteIf we're looking for players, we should keep to England or Germany where the quality of football is that much higher, Unless they are a top top player.. Italian is too tactical and mostly slow,, the difference to the EPL is like chalk and cheese so it isn't really suprising that a player with quality their struggles with a very different brand of football.. Aquilani was a good player, just couldn't handle the physicality of our game and was injured alot as a result.. and then we have the same issue with Borini... We need to start thinking properly about the players we target, and not just go for the next big name abroad.
ReplyDeleteTotti said, we are talking about a very promising young man here,
ReplyDeletewe have already a lot of promising young men at LFC. If we wont meet the £15M for Salah, why would we invest in a no name like this.
would prefer loic remy in the summer
ReplyDeleteIf we were going to buy an Italian, I'd for Cerci.
ReplyDeleteHow many players LFC has put offers to???
ReplyDeleteKeep well away at that price u would want to be mental .Liverpool's history with Italian players is terrible
ReplyDeletelol this is about the 10th player Liverpool are lining up a bid for this window!
ReplyDeleteno . even i am better than him ..kidding... i think that borini is better and lets not waste money on guys like destro . wish borini gets a real chance cause he has so much skills and is really quick on his feet .. for all the one who's watching football, is gareth bale the same player like he used to be for spurs ?., i guess not !! but one thing is for sure no matter how good a player is the final result comes from how he is being used on the pitch..
ReplyDeleteOur first and only signing this January, Dunkin' D is a strong defensive midfielder who has relieved Jordan Henderson of his squad number. Ian Ayre says he has high hopes after proclaiming the club has got its marquee signing after facing intense competition for his signature. This concludes the current window's player signings.
ReplyDelete14 goals in 32 games sounds impressive...until you read that Borini had 9 goals in 24 appearances for Roma in 2011-12. Still he's 6'1" and 160 pounds so on the surface he seems a bit more rugged than some of our attackers. The question is...do we need another striker or are Assaidi/Borini progressing well enough now that they are accustomed to the speed and physicality of the PL? Would this money be better spent on MF's who can feed SAS consistently...or on another right back to cover GJ's fading abilities...or save the money for replacing Suarez if we fail to make top four...which we will, but....
ReplyDeleteESPN says we are interested in Jay Rodriguez...first I have heard of it.
ReplyDeleteyou missed a zero there.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand, striker is not a priority. We need a winger, AM and DM. Jesus.
ReplyDeleteinteresting comment
ReplyDeleteIsraeli international, all-round midfielder, nailed-on passing ability with both feet, natural leader, never gets injured, always prepared to put his body on the line, and of course most noted for his excellent cross.
ReplyDeleteTendency to drift out of games in order to heal the sick and feed the poor but other than that solid value for 30 pieces of silver.
Rafa and Arsene could take Babbel to the next level, but Babbel's brain couldn't...
ReplyDeleteI don't know. I'd have agreed with you in the past but I've seen him play a few times this season and think he looks good. I don't think he is a must buy by any means, but as Italians we've been recently linked with go, I think he isn't a bad shout.
ReplyDeleteMakes good economic sense to buy a man that can turn water in to wine and multiply bread and fish exponentially.
ReplyDeleteMost underrated player of his generation.
ReplyDeleteWord is that he has a good chance of making Italy's WC roster and I'm not surprised by that at all.
ReplyDeleteI think is SAS we have our source of striker goals so we need to add the player that can come in when those two arent available if we are looking at forwards.
ReplyDeleteI say we try get some Southamptons boys, We have been linked to rodriguez and Lambert is a life long LFC fan. Either of these two would be nice signings i believe especially with Southampton apparent exodus.
Im not saying these guys would be world beaters but definitely strengthen the squad and can already play prem football.
Zero, these are all just rumors.
ReplyDeletewe don't need lambert, rodriguez would be nice though
ReplyDeletei just see Lambert as someone who would play as a squad player and not ruffle feather about it. but yes Rodriguez is the type of player i was hoping Aspas could be.
ReplyDeleteAll in all i dont think we need any strikers but if we had to buy one those would be were i would look.
Same type with Fabio Borini....Becarefull LFC,please do not repeat same mistake.......WASTE TIME AND MONEY TO CHASING THIS PLAYER.
ReplyDeleteLambert is a very well rounded player, quite underrated and head and shoulders above Aspas.
ReplyDeleteBut considering his age it wouldn't be worth signing him. Our best hope is that Borini comes back to challenge SAS, which I think he can do.
The problem Aspas has is clearly his size. The guy actually look .anorexic.
ReplyDeleteNothing would make me happier than to see Borini come back and turn it on :D
ReplyDeleteJulian Draxler he's the one, would be an impressive signing, won't happen though, £35 million buy out clause.
ReplyDeleteI always wanted to see Gerrard and Totti in the same team. Gerrard didn't get enough opportunities to play with real attacking schemers, players that could run the game for him up front, using him as their demolition expert. We've not had enough clever players since Roy Evans' team broke up: lots of good runners, a few good passers, but not enough really cunning bastards.
ReplyDeleteQuoting the mirror jk?!! It is a wonder anyone reads this muck anymore.. you have become a roumer mill site. If you have nothing worth writing then why bother just trying to fill a gap in a no news week....
ReplyDeleteDeleting messages from people that don't appreciate or agree with your quotes from "the mirror", nice site you have here, pure ROUMOR FACTORY..
ReplyDeleteToo much money but it would be awesome to have a player named Destro on the team. COBRA!
ReplyDeleteLiverpool need strength and depth, I look at the bench every weeK and struggle to find someone who can change a game. The loan for Moses hasn't worked out Joe Allen has made minor progession this season but nothing to challenge what we already have in midfield. Gerrard is not what he use to be either!. If Suarez or Sturridge gets injured then we will struggle for players upfront, we need a third striker at least a couple more decent players as back up for midfield. Defence is a place we struggle too much we have some good youngsters who can fill at right back like Kelly and robinson did well at left back as cover.
ReplyDeleteWe need to compete with Arsenal and the have very good back for most positions except up front but they are still winning more than us.
I know, so boring
ReplyDeleteYou could tell he loved playing with Aquilani, so imagine how much he'd have enjoyed Totti!
ReplyDeleteEven though I'm a Liverpool fan, Totti's was the first kit I ever purchased. I would have loved to see him in red.
ReplyDeleteJesus can't play football, he wears illegal headgear.
ReplyDeleteHaha! Maybe you're right.
ReplyDeleteSo My Dear friends should we continue with the Policy of Cheap Players. We as per the Table will not finish in the 4th Place. So it will be good if we finished in the 4th Spot and again we should give BR only and only one year support.FSG should back him with the 90Mk of Sponsorship and any deal involving players whether selling should be given to BR.So the first choice of arrival is GK to support is P.Cech(2) is Central defender with arrival of Illori and Papadoupoulos(3) Right Back arrival of M Montoya. Now with departing Gerard will need someone to supplement of the loss will be (4) Miralem Pjanic (5)As Lucal Leiva is getting badly with injury and Milan is willing to have him,so swap him with M.Kovacic (6) will be to have a player like yaya will be Radja Nainggolan (7) To have Sterling Swap with Players of Real Madrid (1) Isco (2) A Illarramendi.(9)A must Memphis Depay. Now Left with Strikers who are not good enough.Should keep Ballotelli as he can keep the ball but will be reverted to attacking midfield.(10) To have Benteke with Swapping R.Lambert (11) To Have Lacazette or Higuain (12) M.Icardi.Now Left for other departs will be johnson,Sakho,Enrique,L Alberto,Aspas,Borini,Brad Jones,Manquillo,Kolo Toure and S Coates. And fund left should bring Young Properties. Thanks Awaiting For Comments
