Liverpool striker Luis Suarez delighted Reds last month by signing a new long-term contract, and LFC legend John Aldridge is convinced that the Uruguayan signed the deal after being promised that the club would spend big during the January transfer window.
In his column for Sunday World this week, Aldo urged Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers to 'use the next two transfer windows to add quality to the ranks', and suggested that there could be some big signings over the next month. He explained:
"Suarez’s decision to sign a new contract suggests the club have something special planned in the transfer window.
"He would not have committed his future to the club unless he was getting promises of ambition"
Hopefully, Aldo is right with his contention here, though I'm not sure there's much merit to this argument. In my view, it's far more likely that unambiguous clarification of his contract - and a massive payrise - is the main reason Suarez signed the new deal.
Clauses in Suarez's old contract made it difficult for him to leave the club, but the new deal reportedly has clear and defined get-out clauses, which allow him to speak with Real Madrid or Barcelona if they show concrete interest.
Reds fans can wallow in a false sense of security if they wish, but when the summer transfer window opens, speculation over Suarez's future will once again dominate the headlines, but this time, it will be much easier for him to leave.
Whatever the reason for signing the new deal, now is definitely time for FSG to back Rodgers with significant transfer funds, and LFC hero Dietmar Hamann agrees with Aldo that new recruits are an absolute necessity. He tweeted this week:
"They [LFC] need to bring players in, because if they don't, Liverpool could be out of the top four race by the end of January, which would be a travesty considering how well the team has done up to now".
Over the last few weeks, Liverpool's lack of squad strength has been brutally exposed, but it didn't have to be that way. As I've repeatedly argued, Brendan Rodgers' ineffective performance in the transfer market is the reason the squad is not up to scratch right now.
The manager does, however, have a 100% record in the January transfer window, so there's reason room for optimism there ;-)
Aldo is not the only ex-Red who believes that 'something special' could happen during the January transfer window. In a radio interview in October, Reds hero Bruce Grobbelaar - who won 14 major trophies during his illustrious LFC career - told Metro FM:
"In the January window, you will see another great name come to Liverpool. I’m not going to give any clues about who it’s going to be, but there’s a big name coming to Liverpool".
Given Grobbelaar's connections at and with LFC, it's possible that he has some inside info about the club's January transfer plans, and his language is emphatic: you WILL see another 'great name' come to Liverpool. On the other hand, he could just be speculating, hoping to be proved right by the end of the window (!)

We need a winger, L.B & C.D.M.
ReplyDeleteIdle speculation. As for FSG backing Rodgers, they have done so ever since he came to the club. It's not time for them to back him, it's time for him to stop peshing the cash he's given away.
ReplyDeleteHello, good evening, and welcome to another episode of "Blind Optimism Mathematics" with your host, John Aldridge. Tonight, we'll be exploring the principles of '2+2=5'...
ReplyDeleteI'll believe it when I see it!
ReplyDeleteThe only way there will be big buys is if theres fairly big sales i cant see it myself.
ReplyDeleteExpecting a marquee signing or 2 in the summer window there will be a few sales to add to the kitty then too.
Ex Liverpool keeper Bruce Grobbalaar also come out only two months ago and said there is a real special signing coming January .
ReplyDeleteBut wouldn't say who.
One signing has to be good that is Gerrards long term replacement .
we also need wingers or wing backs both sides.
And Striker we need proven players right now not long term test projects.
Well the sale of Aspas and recouped wages of Moses is a decent start...
ReplyDeleteWould love to get excited about this but I am holding back until proven.
ReplyDeleteWe should go for De Bruyne, although the quoted £25M is ridiculous.
Looks like Mata is going to Bayern damnnnn. But who can blame him.
ReplyDeleteHuh...where'd my comment go? Anyways, like I said, FSG have always backed Rodgers financially. It is time for him to stop wasting the money he's given.
ReplyDeleteDon't agree Eric, scouring the bargain bin of Europe for 5- 10 million quid players, is not financial backing in the modern game, if you have ambitions of over throwing man city, arsenal, Chelsea on the domestic front nevermind the European stage. Every player we approached last summer we lost because of paltry bids. We would never have spent 40 million on Ozil or 30 on Willian. I find it hilarious that you think Rodgers is 'Peshing' money away when he picked up Coutinho for 8 mil and Sturridge likewise. FSG had their fingers burnt by the dire sheer incompetence of Dalglish, 50 million on Carroll, the signings of Adam, Downing etc etc,. And since then have kept a tight reign on spending. Rodgers has taken a few on loan who in my opinion havnt worked, Cissokho and Moses, but get real, their are not 7 million quid stars in World football. Pellegrini came into city and immediately spent 100 mill, on Negredo and co, for a squad that already has a second 11 worthy of gracing any international team. When FSG give Rodgers that kind of money on a regular basis then we can see if he is peshing it away.
ReplyDeleteHe won't go for that either. News in Belgium is Wolfsburg are interested and he would move there. So I think 10 million would be the maximum.
ReplyDeleteI actually look forward to January transfer window more than the Summer window!
ReplyDeleteopen your eyes its up top It not a topic where just your View is heard.
ReplyDeleteLEWADOWSKI!!! Imagine. Suarez Lewandowski and Sturridge as our front three.
ReplyDeleteThe game against city and chelski showed what will happen if liverpool get into big clubs in champions league. There will be lot of heart in performance. But ultimately individual ability and squad strength of big clubs will decide the matter. If we are planning to spend big in summer ,it would not be appropriate as the team would need sufficient time to gel up. We have very good chance this time for top4 spot. But to last the distance in it we should have atleat 4-5 top class players. So atleast 2 signings is a must this window. so some one like salah and one DM like Reges would do it fine.
ReplyDeleteWe don't need to be worrying about winning the champions league at the moment.
ReplyDeleteIm sure we will sign someone as ever, but will it be a top class or just another flop? I think the second will be the case again, as we hardly ever sign top class, that hasnt happend since we bought suarez, dont expect things to change now, unfortunately. If you think salah rakitic bertrand hughes badu are top class, you a fool!
ReplyDeleteYeah possibly Cissokho Coates Borini Agger and Reina to add to that.
ReplyDeleteIt's not Rodgers' fault the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Willian and Diego Costa chose not to join LFC. It's clear that top players are being targeted and FSG are willing to back him with the necessary funds.
ReplyDeletePlus, loaning out Sterling at the moment would make as much sense as a blind person saying 'I'll believe it when I see it'. In saying that however, they'd be principally right about Sterling.
ReplyDeleteLiverpool will have a massive summer window. The success of which will be largely dependant on CL football and Suarez staying or going.
ReplyDeleteBut potentially there could be around 8-10 departures (transfers and loans). All the usual suspects as well as Johnson and Kelly. I really hope there is a clear out.
Not sure we will see any big signings this month. Signings like Salah could be made to improve our strength in depth. Come the end of the season and we have qualified for the top 4 then will be the right time to sign the cream of the crop! Champions League football will allow us to compete for the best players...
ReplyDeleteHa Ha, No I am not going to that length.Just saw JW henry's twitterfeed in which he is putting out LFC's odds of making it to top4.Good to see owners taking stock of the position and financial implications.Just hoping
ReplyDeleteto see two goog signings in this window.
Just found out "Liverpool have confirmed that Adam Morgan has joined Yeovil Town on a permanent deal"
ReplyDeleteAnother youngster gone....:( Best wishes to him
You have some valid points with which I agree, but your £50mill for Carroll is gross exaggeration.
ReplyDeleteIf it means he is going to get football and try and do something with his career then this is the best move for him.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is there that only very few people on the planet have the type of cash to simply spend 100 plus million on a football team every summer and our owners are not among them. Neither are the owners of Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Juventus or Manchester United and those are the reigning champions in Europe's biggest leagues. Where Rodgers has peshed away money is by the simple fact that of the 95 million he's spent, only 30 million has shown any return on investment. That means 65 million wasted. 50 if you insist on calling Sakho a good buy....
ReplyDeleteYeah, FSG got a 2 in 2 out policy, our squad will always be thin compared to the rivals we are trying to compete with.
ReplyDeleteSalah would be a first team player, picked ahead of Sterling, and I'd expect him to positively influence our results. He's the kind of all-action player who will love the premier league. I expect Ryan Bertrand will come this month from Chelsea too, and someone's coming in from Barcelona, by all appearances. If the gossip is true and Mata is going to Bayern instead of Liverpool, I now wouldn't be surprised to see Shaqiri head our way in addition. We're not in the CL, so they wouldn't be sending him to a direct competitor, but we are in a position to enhance his transfer value, should he come on loan, or to pay bucks ourselves if Anfield turns out to be a good venue for his skills. They wouldn't be hiring Mata if they intended to give Shaqiri games, so I've got some hope there now.
ReplyDeleteI think this might be a busy window for us, just because it's tempting to believe, for the investors as for the fans, that some extra quality throughout the squad could see us cement our position or, even now, give us a shot at the title. I say temptation because, well, it rarely works out that way, and new signings can disturb the team's rhythm in the short term, with all the problems that can bring going forward. Also the actual problems we have, which have cost us between none and nine points in the last month or so, depending how generous you want to be, are not going to be solved by the signings we're most likely to make. Mignolet's mistakes, Coutinho's and Johnson's form; the injuries to Gerrard and Sturridge: we're not going to be signing players to replace these guys, for whom we don't have adequate cover (Gerrard possibly excepted), and their issues will take time to resolve. So it's going to be tough to maintain our challenge whatever happens from here on in, I suspect.
Tough, but not impossible, and it's going to be a tense and enjoyable ride!
Eric, have you looked at the LFC bench all season, it's very very lightweight. The squad is paper thin after the first 11. Rodgers has weeded out much of the dross in his first 18 months, Carroll, Cole, Downing, Shelvey, Spearing, Wisdom, I will exclude Reina and to a lesser extent Enrique. But he needs a squad, he is not in the luxurious position of spending his budget on 1 talent. Hence Aspas, Alberto, and loanees. Sakho has just single handedly grabbed the French buy the proverbials and brought them to the World Cup, he seriously struggled first few games but has looked much better and comfortable on the ball in recent games. I hope he will get better, as our defence is pretty dire all round. Rodgers has persisted with Sterling personally I don't think he is good enough. Allen I'm not sure about and as stated I don't think Cissoko, Assiaidi or Moses have worked out. But unless you are king Kenny's publicity agent, to talk about Rodgers wasting money is ridiculous. And unless you are missing the bigger picture, the team is playing football with a certain flair and standard we have not seen
ReplyDeleteI'll bet there will be a lot of eyes on the a particular mid-fielder in the Chelsea-Derby County FA Cup match this weekend.
ReplyDelete...and they will see that certain midfielder being kicked into the air and stamped into the turf with impunity by Chelsea's midfielders, or, to give them their technical name, bastards.
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, looking forward to that!
I'm not saying we're not playing good football. If you had read more comments I've made on this site I've actually said the opposite. I'm not even saying BR is doing anything less than a stellar job. His transfers have been shocking though and the fact that more than 50% of his total outlay has paid no dividend what so ever underlines that.
ReplyDeleteIt's not? But I'm so fantastic...?
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more. Aspas and Luis Alberto weren't '1st team' signings. They were squad fillers bought to replace Adam, Carroll, Downer, etc. Now is the time to buy quality £20m plus players whilst we're looking good for champs league and our best player has signed a long term contract which means he can't leave for less than £100m. It's a good time to join us. I still think Suarez will leave but whilst BR is in charge, I believe we are in good hands.
ReplyDeleteJoker:):)
ReplyDeleteIt's a numbers game. Very few youngsters will actually make the grade but more are making it now from reaping the results of Rafa's youth policy.
ReplyDeleteDaglish also bought Suarez whom is worth 100m at least right now so he deserves a small bit of credit for that as he is 1 of the best players in the world right now and without him we would be struggling to stay in the top 10.
ReplyDeleteCorrect me if am wrong Bruce gobbler said this around September
ReplyDeletethat a world class midfielder is on his way to Liverpool, from the Italian league or maybe Italian international I hope. But what player he diden,t say.
Aldo thinks Suarez signing a new contract might have been clinched by promises of possible signings in January and Grobbo(?) says a great name will be visiting Liverpool in January. I don't think Mystic Meg has much to worry about - except perhaps that hairstyle.
ReplyDeleteGobbler said either he plays for an Italian club or an Italian international I think it from Juventus midfielder Andrea pirlo is on his way to Liverpool for sure.At he age did u see him controlling games from start to finish world class player.
ReplyDeleteThe player he is referring to is Andrea Pirlo. he wants to play liverpoolfc
ReplyDeletebecause Bruce Gobbler said its a world class international player, am sure he said Italian midfield player but not his name, The only one I can think off is Andrea Pirlo .
Looks like Barca are after RVP and Real Madrid are after Rooney (on the cheap). If so, Suarez may well be staying put in summer, whilst Man U slip into mid-table obscurity...
ReplyDeleteWell, we can but hope!.. YNWA
How can he be "peshing the cash he's given away" if transfers are chosen and bought by the committee of which he is only one member? Do you think he's given a pile of cash and allowed to pick who he wants?
ReplyDeleteI hope we sign this fella Salah "asap" before other clubs snatch him from our grasps, and buy a strong, quick and powerful CDM like Fernando from porto and also a decent striker as back up for Sturridge
ReplyDeleteyeah right and andrea pirlo has risked the wrath of the italian fans by telling grobs he is coming to LFC, you couldnt make it up if you had a brother with the surname grimm
ReplyDeleteDon't want a mega star. Just a gem like continuo will do
ReplyDeleteMr dean gems are rarely found nowadays we were lucky to get one in countinho, but i tell you this Salah fella from Basel is brilliant and mayb buy a CDM and a striker.
ReplyDeleteLol!! Have to agree with you again here about Suarez. Defo wanted clarification and a Payrise with new contract!
ReplyDeleteLiverpool fans can wallow in a false sense of security if they want!!! You not a reds fan? No! When you have the best striker in the world it's inevitable that we would have interest and have to fight tooth and nail to keep him,, that much is obvious.. Reds fans are in no way fools, so sod off with your sanctimonious I know better crap,, your a fool.
ReplyDeleteWhilst Suarez was bought in the same transfer window in which Dalglish arrived, he was not a Dalglish/Comoli signing in the truest sense that they had scouted him and decided he was a player worth bidding on. Suarez was first on the radar under Rafa and was purchased by Ayres. It is therefore disingenuous to credit Dalglish/Comoli with his success. Also let us also not forget that under Dalglish, Suarez was utter pants!
ReplyDeleteLargely, yes. And this committee only came to life after his first summer window. Another indicator people at the club were not impressed with the transfers of Allen, Borini et al.
ReplyDeletegroboalaar is full of shit he says it every window
ReplyDeleteSo way did he send a transfer request in December to his manager wanting to leave and he agree to it, check ii out and you will see its true pope john Paul......
ReplyDeleteUnless Luis comes out and states that he wants to stay here because of the intent of the club to keep building for the CL and more....I guess this will continue to be the speculation of many that he is ready to leave as soon as he is able to.
ReplyDelete
