In July, the Agent of Swiss winger Xherdan Shaqiri hinted at Liverpool's interest in signing the Bayern Munich star, and with the January transfer window just around the corner, it appears that the Reds are set reignite their interest in the 21-year old.
Over the summer, multiple sources in Germany and the UK (including the Liverpool Echo) reported that Brendan Rodgers planned a €24m move for Shaqiri, and according to ITV Sport last week:
"The Reds are confident about securing a deal for Bayern Munich's Swiss international Xherdan Shaqiri, who has struggled to secure a starting role in Germany ahead of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery"
When quizzed in July about Liverpool's interest in Shaqiri, Franco Moretti - the Swiss star's Agent - told TMW:
"Liverpool? The boy is not moving to Monaco, that's for sure."
This could be read in several ways, but in my view, it is implicit confirmation of LFC's interest in Shaqiri. After all, Moretti specifically and emphatically wrote off Monaco's chances, but failed to deny the Reds' interest and/or chances of signing the attacker.
Shaqiri - recently hailed as 'world class' by Munich's Sporting Director Mattias Sammer - made only 17 starts for Bayern last season, and the signings of Mario Gotze and Thiago Alcantara have made it even tougher for the Swiss star to establish himself in the first team.
Things are even worse for Shaqiri this year, and after nearly four months of the season, he's managed to make only six start. Despite his lack of game time, the young attacker seems content at Bayern. In November, he raved:
"Pep Guardiola is is an amazing trainer. He won every title in Spain, he won the Champions League and he's won a lot of titles. We have a lot of fun in training, which is very important, we have a lot of fun in games, so I think he is the perfect trainer"
Liverpool are also tracking Shaqiri's €24m-rated team-mate (for the Swiss national team) Granit Xhaka, so perhaps there's chance of a double January deal?
A loan deal for Shaqiri is allegedly on the cards, but an outright purchase could also be a possibility. It seems unlikely, but if the Reds signed both players in January, it would be a major statement of intent.

The Echo have never said we planned a bid for Shaqiri.
ReplyDeleteWho says we're interested in Xhaka? Caught Offside? Yeah great sources.
ReplyDeleteActually, the Liverpool Echo DID report that. Read it and weep:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-fc-transfer-rumour-mill-5101300
"Liverpool FC are to make a £20m bid for Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri. Reds manager Brendan Rodgers has turned his attention to 21-year-old Shaqiri, after losing out on Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Borussia Dortmund".
PS. I just deleted your other snide post. One more, and you're banned.
ReplyDeleteto be fair (tho not wanting to come across all pedantic)
ReplyDeletethe echo link takes you to the transfer news page which contains headlines of the storys on the storify news feed, which are from external news sources, not the echo, as in an echo reporter was not the source behind the story.
not saying that didn't happen, just commenting on the source you provided.
ahahaha read it and weep good one
ReplyDeleteThat was a rundown of the rumours which were all sourced from elsewhere. Non of that is from the Echo itself, they are just reproducing it.
ReplyDeleteSorry, in this case that's not true. Go to the page again and you will not find a single link from that story some other site. It's irrelevant anyway - it's on the Echo's site, ergo the Echo is reporting it.
ReplyDeletei made the same point before but somehow my comment never made it past moderation...
ReplyDeletethe reason you cannot find the original story and source on the page is because the storify news feed only goes back a month previous, and the page and article were published on 15 Jul 2013.
i still stand by the original point of that page being from external sources.
With respect, this is just rampant pedantry! This particular storify feed is operated by the Echo! In any event, it is the Echo site; someone from the Echo made the editorial decision to post that, ergo it is published by the Echo.
ReplyDeleteThe LFC site does a similar thing but there is a disclaimer saying it is not necessarily their point of view. The Echo doesn't do this so I suppose once collate the stories and put them on the site they are suggesting they too are reporting them. You are dead right there. I was just making the point that sometimes when we are close to signing someone the Echo proper will get a whiff and report it in print. This is not that and so I personally don't rate it nearly as credible. Thus the pedantry.
ReplyDeleteI would love the Shaqiri signing though. Don't think it will happen.
I can't see us signing Shaqiri permanently.. but even a loan deal for the rest of the season would be beautiful. Every time I've seen him he play he looks a real threat. If he wants more games he should come to LFC. But unlike most other players who aren't getting game time at the moment..it's probably not as important to him with the World Cup coming up, because i think he will make the Swiss team even if he isn't getting much game time. So i don't think he will feel he has to leave Bayern, to get more games to make the Swiss team. Hope it happens though :D
ReplyDeleteLook how well Everton are doing - we must learn from them - SERIOUSLY MARTINEZ HAS BEEN AWESOME
ReplyDeleteWe must learn from Everton when we are ahead of them in the table? SHOCK HORROR!
ReplyDeleteWhy need to shoping struggle player? Why not try using Tiago Illori? Before join Sporting Lisbon he playing as striker posistion.Used wise which player that already in house.Let them all show and prove to us what they can do for clubs.
ReplyDeleteLFC must practice start using Luis Alberto and Joe Allen with oftenly. Please do not using Victor Moses and Ally Cissoko again because we all never trust them to playing again.....No,no get rid from both this player.
Why not LFC start using 3 centreback again? Skrtel,Sakho and Agger will be fit to protect the fortress again.Joe Allen asa CDM and Luis Alberto become new attacker midfielder for replacement for Steven Gerrard.Iago Aspas right winger and Rahem Sterling as left winger.PC 10 can back up striker and LS7 as usual position striker.
Cant use 3 centerbacks unless your wingbacks are top quality. GJ and JE were good enough to do it but Flanagan doesnt have the pace and positional sense to pull it off.
ReplyDeleteThe kid knows time is on his side. Robben is getting older and his injuries from the past will catch up with him fast enough. Ribery is also not getting any younger whilst Shaquiri still has to reach his prime.
ReplyDeleteThat's my point. The problem is not that Downing had to be sold so BR shouldn't pretend it was. The guy hardly played, his behaviour towards supporters was appalling and he was just not delivering. 10k a week would still have been too much money for him. As for buying young players that might come good - that helps us in no way what so ever right now. Right now we're stuck with two central midfielders and one fit striker because we spent 15 million on young players that might come good two years from now. We need players now. Not two years from now.
ReplyDeleteDownings poor. We had a chance to go for Mata and I can't believe we went and got him. He's so predictable and rarely can beat a player. He has no end product and not LFC standard. He's doing just as poor for Westham. Moses is technically better than him and will prove to produce more thn Downing did.
ReplyDeleteSo true 10ml is pushing it Downings of the same calibre as Adam for me
ReplyDeletedowning is a poor mans Francis Jeffers
ReplyDeleteThis I agree with. Hendos work rate is great but we need more creativity than that. I personally think 10m would be pushing it. In saying that, I would not of gone for him at all especially when Mata was available at the time.
ReplyDeleteClearly an Evertoniun....sigh
