Since signing for Manchester United during the January 2013 transfer window, £15m attacker Wilfried Zaha has played just 107 minutes of football for his new club, and doesn't look like becoming a regular any time soon. Despite United's stuttering form this season, Zaha continues to be ignored by David Moyes, and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged the 21-year old to cut his losses and move push for a move during the January transfer window.
In his column for the Daily Mail this week, Carra noted:
"Zaha made his first appearance in the Premier League last week but that is not enough for a 21-year-old with his reputation.
"There's no question he would benefit from a move in January"
It's not as if Moyes is reluctant to give youngsters a chance; Adnan Januzaj - who is three years younger than Zaha - has made fifteen appearances for Man United, and it must be galling for Zaha to see a younger player than him regularly getting first-team action.
Prior to the Man United transfer, Liverpool were linked with a move for Zaha. At the time, the Daily Mail reported:
"Kenny Dalglish has contacted Dougie Freedman [former Crystal Palace manager] with regards to the Anfield club’s interest in Zaha. During the phone call, Dalglish asked the Eagles manager more about the 19-year-old’s character than his footballing ability. Dalglish’s contact is a precursor to Liverpool’s attempts to lure Zaha to Merseyside this month".
Clearly, Zaha - recently hailed by Rio Ferdinand as a 'fantastic' talent' - made the wrong decision joining Man Utd. Given Brendan Rodgers' confidence in Liverpool's young players, he undoubtedly would've played more football if he'd chosen Anfield instead of Old Trafford.
Liverpool legend Dietmar Hamann is not entirely convinced about Zaha's talent, and earlier this year, the German suggested that Zaha is a little overrated. He explained:
"I don't like all the hype that's already circling round the kid Zaha. Yes he is exceptionally talented but that's all it is so far. Lessons seem not to have been learnt from Walcott a few years ago. The kid need protecting not hyping up.
Hamann is clearly right. Zaha is totally untested at the highest level, yet people continue to hype him up as if he's achieved something majorly significant in the game. Zaha himself seems to believe his own hype too. In a recent interview with The Guardian this week, he explained:
"I want to come up against defenders who will properly test me. I'd never look at someone and think he's better than me, unless it's Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. When I get on the pitch it's my time".
Given the rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United, I doubt there's any possibility of a loan deal between the two clubs (!), but Zaha will undoubtedly have one eye on the World Cup, and if he's to have any chance of making a late play for the squad, he'll need to be playing regular football.

we could test manu and bid for him ;) hes a good player who i´d love to see at LFC!
ReplyDeleteMeh. Not worth it. There's better talent out there.
ReplyDeletesign salah ,montaya and will hughes
ReplyDeleteIMO ibe and sterling are way better
ReplyDeleteTrue,I've been raving about this guy for ages, seen him live and on TV often, comfortable on and running with the ball, sees and gives the pass, strong and good in the tackle.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. I CAN see FSG trusting Rodgers more now and sanctioning this deal. Boy o boy, I sure hope so! ;-)
ReplyDeleteVery true Agree when them 2 mature with guidance with our to players there gonna be fantastic
ReplyDeleteI'm not saying we shoud change the tactics, but I rather have different attacking options when you can't break trough the middle. Many of Gerrards assists came from free kicks or crosses and it's better to be able to take those oppostunities than to waste them. Best teams can score from anywhere on the field.
ReplyDeleteDon't need him, man u can keep him.
ReplyDeleteIf he's not good enough for man ure he's not good enough for us we don't take cast offs
ReplyDeleteNah.. Sterling will be going to the world cup if he keep playing like what he did recently.
ReplyDeleteHe's a major player for Sevilla, and his contract runs out in 2015, so there really is no reason for the club to want to sell, unless if they could get 40 million for him, which I doubt FSG will be willing to pay. If he does come at all, it'd likely be as a summer signing, and even then would depend upon factors both administrative and personal. Rodgers achievement of taking the club to the summit, albeit for the moment ought to convince the owners that he knows that he's doing, and hopefully that confidence will manifest into funds. We had the money for Willian and Costa, so perhaps if Rodgers makes a good enough case, the money could be there, but it would depend on whether or not that means that other areas such as left back can be strengthened, or will a defensive/attacking midfielder be two purchases for the price of one?
ReplyDeleteMaybe protecting, like Hamann said, is exactly what Moyes is doing. You can't compare Januzaj because breaking into the first team is also about opportunity and not just raw skill. Moyes needed someone because Fellaini was not performing and with Scholes now finally retired, Januzaj was his best option available to him. Had Fellaini had a stormer of a season so far, we wouldn't even know Januzaj exists.
ReplyDeleteNot a bad player but not a fantastically good one either. I'd prefer we stick with Henderson and focus on a player behind him and one in front of him.
ReplyDeleteI had my currencies mixed up there, he is listed at £7m, which would be a steal for a player of such quality.
ReplyDeleteYou mean like Sturridge?
ReplyDeleteThe man cannot even communicate.Let alone advise a footballer.
ReplyDeletethe 1 should quit is chicarito....JH deserve play
ReplyDeleteOr Coutinho, Sakho, Johnson....
ReplyDeleteI don't know who Jaimie is talkin about as no one has hyped him up as a wonder kid??? U need to stop reading the gossip columns....
ReplyDeleteWith what money??? FFP
ReplyDeleteManu can keep their rubbish there is obviously better out there and its time to go get them the club really needs to get players who hit the ground running in January.
ReplyDeleteLiverpool FC does not need him. As Hamann said, he is slightly overrated; that's what Manure United have now found out.
ReplyDeletea merry Christmas to all my fellow table toppers!!!
ReplyDeleteZaha was hyper as wonderkid in England. I'm guessing you're not from England because any player who shows signs of any bit of talent is deemed as a futute world beater
ReplyDeleteJohnson was a starter for Portsmouth who were playing in the UEFA Cup at the time when we bought him wasn't he?
ReplyDeleteSounds like they wont sell in Jan.
ReplyDelete“My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: Loving others. Come to think of it why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?” -- Bob Hope
ReplyDeleteNot sure this kid is the answer at this moment. I would rather us get Chicharito if he is pissed off........
ReplyDeleteYeah I don't really fancy this player for us, don't think he would significantly improve our first team, though he'd add to our options.
ReplyDeleteBe interested to know how others feel about this, but I'm a bit wary of players coming from Spain at the moment on the whole. Outside the top couple of teams the quality has dived again in the last few seasons, partly because of English clubs raiding the good experienced players from the mid-table Spanish sides, but also because of the departures of a few good managers, the deteriorating financial situation for many clubs, and so on.
So I'd be hesitant about paying top dollar for a player from there at present; quality is not guaranteed; the level isn't much above Ligue 1. Bundesliga is the place to go for midfielders right now, surely.
Maybe you should have joined United instead of Liverpool Carra then you would have been guaranteed at least one Premiership medal.Loser.
ReplyDeleteWhy would Chicharito want to leave United's bench to sit on ours? Right now...with RVP hurt, he stands the best chance of making a name for himself.
ReplyDeleteAnother over hyped English talent? English media seem like buffoons. It's just like how they grossly over hype their cricket team and then eat humble pie. 0-5 to England? hhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahah
ReplyDeleteIt beats me why people only try to focus on that for one day of the year. Is it too much effort?
ReplyDeleteAshes, eh? I wouldn't comment much on that yet...our team(India) got thrashed in England 4-0...then again vs Aussie..flat track bullies I guess! But doing ok vs SAF currently.
ReplyDeleteWe've won the Ashes, so us Aussies can comment as much as we want! It's been great because England were firm favourites, and no one gave us much of a chance. 3 tests later and the whole English cricket team is shattered. One player has already quit (I won't count Trott), while some of the rest could lose their careers.
ReplyDeleteThank Christ Carra isn't the manager....
ReplyDeleteone word.... MATA
ReplyDeleteYes, it makes me wonder! Its pretty much the same team for Aussie and England when you guys lost last time in England. I guess its the matter of confidence, you guys needed it badly.
ReplyDeleteYou're "not bothered about the title"???? Mate, are you just in this for the view and the singing?
ReplyDeleteThat's a statement that I have never heard from a Liverpool FC supporter.
Sorry, mate, but I started following this team in the late 70's (born in 72) and I have been in pain watching other teams lift the crown in May.
I vocalised that poorly, what I meant by that I'm very much taking a realistic approach to the position that we're currently in.
ReplyDeleteWe have the two toughest away games coming up within a week and could quite comfortably fall from top at Christmas to fifth at New Years, behind Everton and level on points with Spurs who have have had a really poor season. I'll be withdrawing my opinion on where we are as a club until after these two matches.
Being realistic, we've finished 7th, 8th, 6th and 7th the last four years and failed to win the league with a better team the preceding season. On the record of the past few years, and the stiff competition for places, I believe that Top 4 alone would be a huge achievement. Maybe if we can get that we should be looking and thinking that's something we can build on to challenge for the title..
