'He's out for a few weeks': BR injury update on Allen, Sakho, Gerrard, & Hendo....

With Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge and Jose Enrique already out, things seem to be going from bad to worse for Liverpool on the injury front.

In his pre-Hull press conference this afternoon, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers confirmed that Glen Johnson's substitution against Chelsea was 'tactical', not injury-related, and he provided the following injury update:

"Joe [Allen] will be out for a few weeks with an adductor strain.

"Sakho, we're just waiting to find out more.

"We'll see how Steven is for Hull. By the Stoke game, the others will not be too far away.

"Jordan Henderson is fine. He's a real soldier, and should be fit for Hull"

Rodgers has repeatedly moaned about the size of his squad over the last week, but I have no sympathy for the manager. Squad strength is poor because he utterly failed to effectively strengthen the squad over the the summer.

Rodgers chose to sign Aspas, Alberto, Moses and Cissokho, and none of them have improved the squad. In Alberto's case, he never gets the chance to show what he can do, so why spend €7m on him in the summer? Why not just keep Suso, who is basically the same player?

I've repeatedly argued this point since the summer, and many refused to accept it, but again: Just like the summer of 2012, Rodgers wasted tens of millions on the wrong players and/or players LFC just didn't need, and once again, the club is paying the price.

Just imagine if Rodgers had brought in four players capable of making an impact; things would look a hell of a lot better right now, and the ongoing injury crisis wouldn't have such a major effect on the team.

Coutinho, Sturridge, Toure, and Mignolet aside, Rodgers' performance in the transfer market since arriving at Anfield is pretty atrocious. He needs to get it right next month, or all the hard work over the first half of the season will mean absolutely nothing.

  1. I disagree Sakho was not a waste of money considering that Agger had been courted by Barcelona. Moses is a loan player as is Cissokho.
I'll give you Aspas who THUS FAR looks a bad signing.
That having been said the Money has has had has been much better spent that Dalglish, Houllier ,Hodgson and arguably Benetiz.
We've not seen enough of ILORI or Alberto to make a valid assessment and anyone offering such a definitive opinion without really looking closely is wrong .

Jaimie, you're wrong simple, you've confused the loan market with the purchases and players who are young and in there first season.
I'd rather we loaned Moses,Cissokho et al than fork out wasted money on them.

If any of our recent Managers wasted money, it was Dalglish but some seem to shy away from the inconvenient truth.

i think we have to call reina back from loan because mignolet is not up to scratch
two howler 2 points and potentially more dropped
we should try to bring cassilas on loan

  3. I think Sakho has been decent but I definitely don't have sympathy for BR.

    Borini, Sahin, Aspas, Alberto, Ilori...Sigh...

  4. Good call if we can get him back though , wouldn't dropping Mingolet destroy his confidence?
Also how well as Pepe been playing since his loan move?

allen is a big miss he was playing well i wont balme him for an average performance againts oscar and lampard

i hope gerrrad does not go straight back he odes not deserve it we look so much more mobile without him maybe rossiter should start
or alberto come in and hendo move back with lucas
or smith moving to left midfield with coutinho coming inside
    the third sounds best
but no way should static gerrard start

  7. Borini yes Sahin (loan) Apspas yes Alberto (how long has he been here 6 months and how many games?).

skrtel and toure will be pensioners soon

jamie what do you think about mignolet , he is not getting the basics right ?

and what about playing smith with allen injured and coutinho moving central?

and do you think gerrard should still be playing for lfc even though he cant run?

  14. Liverpool needs to start recruiting players that are ready to contribute right away, preferably in the 25-26 years old range (e.g. Rakitic.) Truth is, Coutinho and Sterling are not ready yet to be stars in a top 4 premier league squad. Most of our starters would not be regulars for Chelsea or City. If we want to make the champions league and keep Suarez we need to stop focusing on the future (Alberto, Flanno, etc) and more on the now.

finally , i think suarez body language is really poor
every time sterling ,coutinho and hendeerson make a mistake its like he
    wants them off the pitch
he needs to learn to control his emotion and support the players around him
    #my final post

  16. The chemistry of Allen, Hendo and Raheem along with the brilliance of Suarez were key in lifting LFC up, but the pace of Eden, Oscar and Willian really creamed LFC.Plus right @the start Eto took Hendo out of the equation last night and he never looked the same after the hit. And now hope to see Alberto start the game next match and does any have any news about Kelly? Aspas is going to need some play time, but I guess Brendan would make him start for the FA cup. It's been sad to see LFC get a long injury list. . I think I would rather see Borini back and even Assaidi if we don't get any new worthwhile signings in Jan. I really have high hopes for Luis Alberto, he seems to be strong, mentally tough and has pace. Hope to see him start. And almost forgot about Llori... wow! Nice to see you Jamie back with your articles...:)

to be fair we are not at that level and never will be because we don't have a billion pounds

the only way we can go anywere near them is the asernal ,dourtmount and barca way
buy young players and develop them
and give your academy a chance
plus we did not lose because of sterling and coutinho they have been doing well
we lost because of the belgian waffle (simon mignolet)
who is not making playground saves and only knows how to jump up like super man

we could have signed kevin mirrales
    instead of borini
we could have signed barry instead of cissoko
we could have signed lukaku instead of moses
we could have signed james mccarthy instead of allen but allens been alright
we should have got martinez instead of rodgers
he has got them top 4 with o net spend
and has actually won a proper trophy in his life not the championship play off one

    ReplyDelete
  20. I understand the economic problem of it, but I am certain you can get players that are more ready to contribute right away than Alberto, who might become a very good player, but wasn't even a regular in his squad. Spanish and Italian football is going through an economic crisis. Cazorla went to Arsenal for what? 15 million euros I think? I know they are playing champions league but still..

  25. Mourinho would not have allowed Lukaku tpo join us so scratch him off your list.

Everton would not have sold Mirallas as he is one of their better players.

Barry is 32 and on loan from City. We would be utterly mad to sign him on his wages so he can go retire somewhere else..

Borini and Allen was signed in Rodgers first season.

Moses and Ally are both loan signing. Doubt we wanted them permanently and took them on as backup.

Who would you have signed in the last transfer window taking what I have said above into account.

    ReplyDelete
  26. RodgersStubbyFingers3:43 pm, December 30, 2013

BR has had 3 windows and had 1 great one and 2 poor ones, IMHO. Then there is the loan policy which inbound has been rubbish (Sahin, Cissokho, Moses) and outbound insane (Borini and Suso were not surplus they were needed! United have 4 strikers and 8 wide midfielders FFS!)

  30. Yes. In fact he was doing worse than Mignolet that's why he is not at the club. Two games doesn't show the whole picture, how many points has Mignolet gained us this season. Pepe at his best > Mignolet but when was the last time we saw that best? A few seasons ago.

    thats midfield sorted
sign jay rodriqueze to play up front
    and montoya

    ReplyDelete
  35. its very true Jaimie. Rodgers spent £7M on Alberto, £9M on Aspas, together Cissokho and Moses loan fees come up to £6M. that's £22M altogether on completely ineffective players(bar alberto although we could have passed on him) with that £22M in the summer we could have bought a world class player like Julian Draxler and Sidney Sam. Julian Draxler would only have costed in the summer about 18M and Sidney sam has mere release clause of £2M. these players are getting into the Germany squad so they are definitely top class because that German team is out of this world, and they will show it at the World Cup. back to the point though, Rodgers needs to have a Good January and we really need some quality midfielders.

Its now evident that BR's style of football is perfect for Liverpool and the team is playing well and creating chances. but when in comes to quality, our ratio of scoring is decreased because when chances fall to players such as Allen, Coutinho, Lucas we will miss. as they don't know how to shoot and bottle all the chances. even if there was a MAGNIFICENT build-up to the goal. which is how weve been playing ltely. Were buying Salah in January which looks like to be £10M which IMO looks quite like a bargain with the performances hes had. unlike Hughes who is quoted £15M despite never even playing a CL or PL game in his life.

We should try to buy Momo Diame as well. IMO hes cheap and is an upgrade to allen and lucas. Allen to be fair has been better than lucas but there both not up to the standards of a top team. and if they were we wouldn't be losing against the top teams. Ive seen us enough from diame to know if he was playing in our fluid football he will bury chances that come his way and also create much more than Allen and Lucas. 100% guaranteed. £3.5M is also a bargain. so that's £13.5M for two bargains in Diame and Salah. after this we must try to sign a truly world class player to make a statement out to the other teams that LFC is truly back in business. Marcos Reus would be a big dream but LFC should bid £35M like we did for Carrol but this time for what we know if a truly world class player. Dortmund payed £15M for Reus and would be making a profit of £20M. they've shown in the past they would sell there best players should they make a big profit and I believe if we stumped up the cash they would. the big question is would Reus leave Dortmund to join Liverpool? Playing in the Premier League is massive to all top players and that could work in our favour. Also the attraction of a guaranteed starring role in the team with a potential front three of Him, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge would also be something extremely exciting. he's yearly contract is €4M a year. Liverpool can double that to €8M a year. All this could convince Reus into signing. after this we would be guaranteed title challengers and potential winners.

  36. FSG needs to decide what will be Liverpool philosophy, are we waiting for our young players to develop. Say in four years when Sakho, Coutinho, Stirling and Sturidge are in their prime? Or are we going to become a top 4 squad in the best league in the world and keep Suarez? Mind you, I am not saying that Rodgers lacked funds (he spent money when you consider recruits like Aspas) but I don't get our transfer policy either. At some they have to decide. We don't need that many players in my opinion but we do need a couple that can have instant impact.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm so glad you're not the manager ... Smith the next bale? Gerrard shouldnt be in the team with so many players out? Recalling reina? How can you be so deluded ans blame mignolet now, after he was so brilliant except these last two games? You're talking BS sorry mate

  40. First of all those fsg are liars, they promised us a squad that will compete with europes best, wheres that squad? When we gonna have a squad like city chelsea bayern barca real etc? You could say never, then we'll never win anything. Just what the hell is this strategy of buying young, unproven, overpriced and loaning the rejected players at their own clubs? Then we want to win the league? Cmon, thats not enough even for a europa league like we failed last year to even qualify there. Rodgers not better at all, with sturridge gerrard enrique moses all out and still there was no place for texeira ibe ilori even on bench? But there was a place for smith and rossiter (barely known) what can you call this other than a disgrace? Until when we will cry out for squad depth that missing in this team for 23years now, until when these owners will play with the feelings of the fans of this football club? You see we losing almost every game with top teams why? Because of this squad depth and theres where you win a CL place, never mind the title. I think this club needs to be taken over by an arab or whoever just a person who spends until we win things, theres no other alternative, we will go 50 years like this of no epl title plus suarez might get fed up and go and thats it, we need to take this chance as long as suarezs is still here to win something, because if we goes its all over for us, so if we dont spend big and right in jan. No CL again for me.

    ReplyDelete
  41. No, I am not wrong. Loan or purchase, it makes no difference. And it's not just this summer, it's last summer too:

    Assaidi
    Sahin
    Allen (though he is improving)
    Alberto
    Aspas
    Iliori
    Moses
    Cissokho
    Borini
    Yesil

it doesn't matter if we've not seen enough of Ilori/Alberto etc. Those two players cost £15m combined, and if you spend that money, then you should expect to see those players *used* in some way, especially if the manager complains about squad strength.

The point is Rodgers has spent money on players who don't play, and/or rarely get on the pitch. He should've spent the cash on players who could immediately improve the team. Worry about potential later; his first priority should be to improve the team NOW.

making distinctions between loans and purchases is just an excuse. If you get the loan deals right, they can make a huge difference. Look at Lukaku at Everton, for example.

Rodgers has failed with his loan signings, and consequently, the squad is nowhere near the quality that it should be.

    ReplyDelete
  42. You say could have signed such and such as if that is all it takes, put in a bid and they come. It's just not that simple. It's not even that easy in Football manager so I can't see why you would think so.

The point you make about Allen, Coutinho and Lucas is one that I agree with but at least Allen and especially Coutinho have age on their side and can better parts of their game like Ramsey has done for Arsenal. It deosn't help for now but It can improve.

Diame does not have a good goal or assist record so I am not sure that will do us any good getting more goals from midfield.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Why does it matter how many games Alberto has played? It's not about him, it's about Rodgers buying players who don't player, or don't fit in.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Are you joking or really that silly?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Same shit every year - if we win 2 in a row were title challenging and superior to Barcelona, but if we loose Brendan deserves the sack, everything we did in the last few months we did it wrong, FSG are idiots/liars/cowards/cowboys/onlybusinessman or whatever and everything is the worst... Brainless?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Smith is a left back.

Why play Smith when we have Ibe?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Every goalkeeper makes mistakes. Mignolet was always going to make errors this season, but he's also saved LFC lots of points as well. A couple of dodgy games doesn't make a bad keeper.

I'll be posting an article about Smith later, or tomorrow.

Gerrard still has a role to play for LFC, but he should have to fight for - and justify - his place like everyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Because making judgements on young players who have not played much is ignorant and or arrogant.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hodgson? Do me a favour. His transfer business is the least of LFC's problems. Rodgers' performance in the transfer market is far, far worse.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You were not saying that when LFC were winning all their games. YOu talk like Rodgers suppose to have a magic ball and know who is going to be a super buy and who is not. The man has limited funds due to all the money previous managers waisted and also not been in the CL. As matter of fact all the professional pundits and including ex players agree with Rodgers. You were suppose to talk about injury updates not your 2 cents on Transfer window activities.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Ibe is injured somebody said yesterday ...nevermind a teenager who is LB shpuldnt be even considered as our main winger imho

    ReplyDelete
  52. I agree that it's not that simple, but with the thousands of players available every summer, Rodgers had the chance to make more effective signings, and he failed to do so. That's on him. No one twisted his arm to sign Cissokho, Moses, Alberto, Aspas, Assaidi, Sahin, Borini etc.

    ReplyDelete
  53. far worse? in what way?

    ReplyDelete
  54. I would want to but i think it's more beneficial for him to stay there and play every week.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Ok let have that debate ...I'd wager that the people in here would say that Hodgsons transfers were worse than Rogers put it up as poll if you want to test if your opinion is supported by the rest of the fans...it doesn't add up Jaimie

    ReplyDelete
  56. I mean in terms of their short contribution. Why buy them if they wont play?

    ReplyDelete
  57. I really want to see where Jaimie is going with this cus in my view Hodgson was way worse and i suspect many other Liverpool fans

    ReplyDelete
  58. No, what is ignorant and arrogant is the inability to see the obvious, simple argument being made. Once again:

    * The issue is not whether Alberto is good enough, He may very well be, but Rodgers is not playing him, which means the £7m spent over the summer is, thus far, a total waste.

*It is not about Alberto's talent. It's about the manager's failure to sign players who can improve the team NOW.

    * Given LFC's position (trying to get back into the CL), it makes absolutely no sense to spend millions on players who are not going to feature. Get back into the CL, and THEN start buying players 'for the future'.

So please, stop misinterpreting my point. I don't make any judgement on Alberto; I'm judging Rodgers strategy in the transfer market.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter how good a player is if he's never played.

And please don't give me the 'but Alberto is for the future' nonsense. Players like Sterling, Wisdom are younger than him, and played regularly. Coutinho is the same age, and plays regularly.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I *was* saying the same things when LFC were winning games. I've been making these points all season (and last season), so please get your facts straight, and don't just say things for the hell of it.

Also, don't tell me what to write. If you don't like it, leave. If you post any further comments like that, they will be deleted.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Ibe is injured mate.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Rodgers needs to go? No chance. Transfer business aside, he's doing superbly for LFC, and he's definitely the right man for the foreseeable future.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Why send him away in the first place? It makes absolutely no sense: Send Suso on loan and spend 7m on a carbon copy? (Alberto) - Where is the financial or strategic sense in that?

    ReplyDelete
  63. So who has been Rodger's Xabi Alonso or Mascherano signing then? The fact that we have not seen enough of Alberto and Ilori is exactly the point. Why buy players that you will not play when you still need some that will? The fact that other managers have wasted money takes nothing away from the fact that Rodgers has done so too. They lost their jobs as a result of it (except for Hodgson) so are you saying that Rodgers needs to lose his too? And how would that make things better for us? We don't have a bad team and I firmly believe we can finish inside the top four. Sure we lost two in a row against direct rivals but had those matches come ten matches apart people wouldn't make such a big deal about it. They will drop points too and we have to face all of them one more time this season so there is plenty of opportunity to set things right. That starts with some proper signings early in January though. Ones that go straight into the first team.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Whether my opinion is supported by others is not the point. It doesn't need to be, that's why it's an opinion.

It's a fact that Rodgers' transfers are worse than RH's:

    * BR spent significantly more money than RH.
    * BR bought more players than RH.

    * BR bought far more duds that RH.

    * RH never had a chance to bed his players in.

    * RH bought players at a time when the club was experiencing its greatest ever turmoil. Who'd want to join in those circumstances.

    * You go on about Poulsen and Konchesky, but why exactly were they such bad signings? It's fashionable to slam those two, but the stats actually show that LFC performed BETTER with Poulsen in the team:

    http://www.liverpool-kop.com/2011/09/christian-poulsen-failure-no-he-did.html

    * If we accept that Konchesky was a transfer failure, who else failed? Joe Cole, I'll give you that, but Gerrard wanted him at the club (and even admitted as much). Meirelles, Aurelio and Brad Jones were not flop signings.

Compared to Rodgers - in terms of money spent, and sheer number of failures - RH did well.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Quantify your view than RH's transfers were worse; don't just say it. If you can't, you're just following the crowd and jumping on the Hodgson bandwagon.

    ReplyDelete
  66. exactly my point jaimie. when the opportunity has been there to sign the world class players others have signed he has not taken them. how can we buy Aspas but yet let Remy go to QPR? exact same price, infact Remy £1m cheaper. astonishing. we never bought players such as Torres and Suarez from nowhere. when the talent was there we had to stump up the cash breaking our club-fee records at the times and they've both paid off massively. we must buy someone of Marcos Reus stature in January.
and as for you Jay Jay its not football manager its Football mate. no1 thought RM would sell Ozil to arsenal but they did as it represented a profit they made of the player. we can definitely buy Reus if we cough up £35-40M. im almost 100% Dortmund will sell but its if he will join.
and Coutinho is a good player but he needs to stop thinking hes the man as hes got a lot of training to do. if your not even looking up when your shooting at this level his goal rate explains. his 1v1 vs hart was as poor as allens miss vs everton. these are simple goals the team should be scoring. im sure coutinho can improve his scoring, but allen I doubt. the only thing he can improve is his assist rate as he is not the type of player that scores.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Are you sure Rodgers actually wanted those players? If you notice he has been saying for ages he Wants Players Who Can Come Into The Team And Make Immediate Improvements! I'm sure you'd agree, even when those players were signed, they didn't fit that category!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Name me one player that Hodgson signings that have been a success at LFC. Then compare that to Rogers. May I also remind I posted on here when Hodgson was manager and if you look at what I said I stated THEN was it was a bad move. I'm no bandwagon jumper and note I have not accused you of anything other than being wrong on the subject you raised

    ReplyDelete
  69. Cissokho, Moses and Sahin were all loan signings. Doubt we will see Cissokho and Moses stay on.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Agreed! I'm not even sure Brendan is getting the players he wants!

  72. Meirelles was a success. Brad Jones is a success (as a back-up goalkeeper); Aurelio was a steady player. Rodgers list of failures so far: Borini, Sahin, Assaidi, Aspas, Alberto, Moses, Cissokho etc. Much more money spent, and far more players bought who either:

    a) Are not good enough
    b) Never play.

From a purely numerical/financial point of view, it's clear that Rodgers has performed worse than Hodgson in the transfer market.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Now your using economics to justify your opinion as opposed to what players WILL and CAN contribute on the PITCH ...Poulsen, Konchesky and Cole offered little when compared Sturridge Coutinho et al it's about the football on the pitch not the economics off it

    ReplyDelete
  74. Sakho, Allen, Mignolet, Sturridge, Toure and Coutinho have all been very good signings.

I struggle to see how you can suggest that Rodgers has wasted money when fact of the matter is that not all signings will be succesful plus Ilori and Alberto are signings for the future...

    ReplyDelete
  75. Why the distinction? Loan signing or purchase, they are in the squad, and should be able to improve the team. Loan signings can be gold, and we've seen that countless times with various teams. If you make the right loan signing, it can make a huge difference. Rodgers has, without exception, made the wrong loan signings, and none of them have made any impact on the team.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Why are you so certain Brendan actually wanted them and not the 'committee'?
He himself keeps saying he wants Players who will come straight in and improve the team! Can you not read between the lines of what he's saying!!??

    ReplyDelete
  77. There exist objective and subjective criteria when assessing the effectiveness of a transfer policy. You still don't seem to grasp the concept of 'loss of utility', i.e. the benefit the team *would've* gained if transfer funds were spend more wisely.

Take Alberto and Aspas, for example: combined cost = £15m (approx). Impact = NIL.

LFC has lost the benefit of that money. It's a total waste. If , however, Rodgers had spent that on the right player, the team would not be benefiting from that player. That is why the financial side of it matters.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Does that apply to when we're hammering Spurs or Norwich too?

    ReplyDelete
  79. You can struggle all you like - it's an irrefutable fact that Rodgers has wasted money on transfers.

Borini, Aspas, Alberto, Assaidi and Ilori = £37m.

What benefit has LFC gained from these signings? Whether these players are for the future or not is irrelevant. You can't spend £37m in one year and have NOTHING to show for it!

    ReplyDelete
  80. It's not a fact Jaimie. Truth is Rodgers has made the team better than it was.

i think if hodgson stayed on
we would have got a better replacemnt for torres

we would have signed young instead of downing
    mvilla would have joined
i think fsg in hindsight got it wrong
maybe brendan would have inherited a stronger lfc

But remember, we wa better position to sign to sign Guilherme Siqueira who is a left back but the deal never happened so maybe we could not get any of our real targets due to CL and our League form etc so decided to loan Cissokho untill we are in a better position to sign real qualitity players?

  91. How can you say that Ilori and Alberto are a waste of money when they still need to prove themselves, atre still very young and signings for the future?

    ReplyDelete
  92. True no one twisted his am but when assessing his signings it's clear that players like Sissokho and Moses are players that we have signed short term as we have missed primary targets. Alberto is still very young in a new country and league and deciding he is a dud so soon may be folly. I think lumping all these players together in one argument just does not make sense and is far too simplistic as it doesn't link in the individual reasons for signing such players. Also cost is a significant factor. I remember Benitez talking about players in the range 5 to ten million being gambles that don't always work out. Far be it for us to assume we know more than him.

    ReplyDelete
  93. You cannot predict that Ilori and Alberto are going to fail or be succesful so they are not a waste of money as yet.

    ReplyDelete
  94. What you are not doing is thinking about the whole cost. Wage demands mean that Remy would almost certainly be a much more expensive player.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Exact;y my point Logan the distinction is very necessary.

    ReplyDelete
  96. 'loss of utility' OK so the assumption based on nothing but your opinion ...not based on any facts other than a economic value ...does not transfer to the right player as you assert. It a moot point your trying make in suggesting that 15 million pounds spent on the 'right player' is not provable as you don't know who that right player is or was. Added to the FACT that benefit to the team is again not provable as you can't prove who is the right player is. Impact is NIL ..thus far needless to say the jury has not risen ...the court is still in session and you've jumped the shark

    ReplyDelete
  97. Sorry about the grammar. My keabourd has a mind of it's own.

    ReplyDelete
  98. 100m means nothing, how many players have left? To build a squad slowly and relatively cheaply. How are Everton and Newcastle better you belter?

    ReplyDelete
  99. You keep ignoring the very fair statement that Ilori and Alberto where not signed for the now as Rodgers himself has pretty much said. It is simply an erroneous statement to say they are a waste of money.

    ReplyDelete
  100. So you are ignoring all the games we won without Suarez then? This and last season? Considering your name I would have thought you were aware of these things.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Brad Jones is not a good keeper and Auralio barely ever played, which is why he was released in the first place. Your idea of success seems to be very different to mine and your own it seems. If Brad Jones backup is a success then all the players you mention subs are successes.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Brilliantly put !

    ReplyDelete
  103. No he wasn't he was watched by scouts and discussed by LFC but he was not signed until Kenny. This like Cole was done without the manger being that necessary but fortunately was a much better signing.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Gosh, you and others persist in deliberately ignoring the point. When a manager spends 37m on 5 players, there has to be some return on that. You can't just write it off by saying 'they're for the future'. If LFC miss out on the CL this season with players like alberto et al spending their time on the bench, FSG will be asking questions, and so they should.
Whether alberto and ilori are sucessful in tje futurw is irrelevant. BR spent close to 15m on the two of them, and the club is getting zero return for that NOW. That cash should've been spent on a player/s who could improve the team now.

  105. I agree Rodgers has not spent wisely at times but most of the players he signed had shown a lot of promise at previous clubs and the gamble as it stands hasn't paid off on a fair few players with the exception of Coutinho and Sturridge, Sakho and Mignolet (Bar the mistakes) he needs to sign proven quality players but they come at a price

    ReplyDelete
  106. Two things I don't understand is why Kolo Toure is out of favor and why Luis Alberto doesn't get more playing time. Toure was a beast until he got hurt and Alberto looked good for the 20 minutes he played and got an assist for Suarez. Any insights out there?

    ReplyDelete
  107. Agree totally m8! Mignolet saved us points more this season that cost us points it's just that the errors have been magnified as they have been against Man City and Chelski

    ReplyDelete
  108. Perhaps because they will be better players in time and more expensive then. The issue should not be that we bought those players that may well do well for us but rather we did not buy others also that would have contributed now. There shouldn't be any problem buying young talented players and not playing them straight away. Truth is if we got a primary target instead of having to settle for the likes of Moses this would not even be a talking point.

    ReplyDelete
  109. If that's your point then Everybody has been saying that. We all want the best players but 1)we can afford them but no CL 2) We can't afford them due to higher fees. So your point is just a general sense.
If you don't like people telling you what to write then you should respect what others opinions are. A lot of times you have deleted or treating to delete people opinions because the strongly disagree with you. Now I agree no one should throw INSULTS in here and those people should be deleted!!

    ReplyDelete
  110. Thus far being more important than you make out. We shouldn't be bemoaning players we may have bought for the future and talking about the players we missed out on. Like you say it is about the no but that doesn't mean we should hold the young players to account for it. We signed Alberto quite early on so if reports are to believed we were still after primary targets that we didn't get due to other issues that were largely not money based, so it's not like the Alberto signing caused us not to sign those players. So it's not Rodgers strategy but factors such as no CL and other more prestigious or much more wealthy teams who do play in the CL getting the players we wanted. The two things are unrelated and should remain so but you are intent on raising the figure of "money wasted" as it makes your argument. Lumping all the signings together is far too simplistic and far too easy.

Is it all that surprising that our short term and not even second choice players signed on loan are not doing all that well? Is it that surprising that players bought in the words of the manger "for the future" don't play that often? The

    ReplyDelete
  111. Absolutely agree, no idea why smith is prefered to alberto ...

    ReplyDelete
  112. How much is Suso worth now compare to before??? Alberto is going on loan next year and if he does as Suso did then it makes financial sense. You are the gentleman who keeps writing about players that we should have signed but passed on but yet you can see beyond the NOW!!

    ReplyDelete
  113. Why is Jones 'not a good keeper'? What is your justification for that? Please describe how Jones has let LFC down whenever he's been played?

The difference with Jones and the rest is that he was bought specifically to sit on the bench and be a back-up goalkeeper.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I have wanted Toure ahead of Skrtel for a while now and would like see Alberto get more playing time.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Do you really want Liverpool to park the bus for 80 minutes? I dont.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I haven't ignored that statement. It doesn't matter. The point is that those two players cost £15m, and a club in LFC's position (i.e. 4 years out of the CL) cannot afford to spend £15m on players who may come good in 3-4 years. That money needed to be spent on a player/s who could come in and immediately help LFC consistently challenge for the CL.

    ReplyDelete
  117. If I have to explain it to you Jaimie perhaps you should knock this game in the head.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Whatever. I can't be bothered to engage in this pointless debate any further. You clearly don't get it, and that's fine. Let's agree to disagree.

    ReplyDelete
  119. But to sign better player for the first team we need CL football so spending on youngsters to come good in two or so years from now is not the worst idea and 15 million is a drop in the ocean nowadays. The cost involved for CL type players is more than just 15 million pounds.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Like I have said if reports are to be believed we were ttying to sign better players regardless of the money spent on the younger players. Why we didn't get them has nothing to do with signing the younger players.

    ReplyDelete
  121. 15 million pounds combined on two youngsters is not a gamble, especially if they are intended for the future.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Like I have said if reports are to be believed we were trying to sign
better players regardless of the money spent on the younger players. Why
we didn't get them has nothing to do with signing the younger players so that's why it is erroneous.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I get it I just don't agree with you as I stated earlier.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Typical copout. You made a statement saying Jones ls 'not a good keeper'. I've asked you to justify that statement. So do it. If you can. If you can't, then why say it? Where is the proof that Jones is 'not a good keeper'? The truth is what you're saying is, with respect, nonsense. Jones is a perfectly adequate back-up goalkeeper:

    * In 8 Prem games. LFC have lost only ONCE with Jones in goal. (4 wins/4 draws/1 defeat)

    * Unbeaten in 15 out of 19 games overall.

    * 5 clean sheets

    Etc

    Clearly, a decent back-up keeper.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I fully understand what your argument is. It is just far too simplistic and doesn't take in the fact that we were still after the likes of Willian after signing Ilori and Alberto. The two are not really connected.

    ReplyDelete
  126. That's like the "we are better without Suarez" argument. It doesn't take in context such as teams played, when etc. Truth is he always looks like an accident waiting to happen, doesn't do anything particularly well. He is not even Australias second choice keeper.

If we are going to use stats alone how many games have we lost when Alberto has played? So that must mean he is not a waste then?

    ReplyDelete
  127. how many players come to the prem in season 1 and kick on? few is the answer. there is a bedding in process. borini, showed good flashes at the end of last season, striking the ball v well and he scored plenty at swansea the season before. don't know why aspas is so poor as he was highly rated last year, wanted by many if reports were right n did alright in pre season. i'm thinking its mental with this guy as he was top dog in small club, now in bigger club with bigger expectations, better players may be intimidated? surprised ilori hasn't been used but again looking good in portugal and being good in prem are two different things entirely. i think suso was trouble in the dressing room, talking a lot to the press about moving away if he didn't get games, now he's had a good run of games, maybe his transfer value has increased? alberto in my opinion needs to bulk up a little but has shown glimpses. i think allen is a player we could've done without but the situation with henderson at the time could've gone either way. eriksen and dempsey at spurs have hardly set the world on fire and i remember people saying we should've signed them. just proves transfers are difficult.

    ReplyDelete
  128. You're so wrong about this it blows my mind. We spent 15m on two talented young players. 15m will not get you an established, immediate impact, consistent player. It just wont. That costs you 25 or 30. And then if they get injured, that's the whole of your transfer budget spent on one player who can't contribute, and your squad is just as thin as it was before.

Additionally you can't just throw young players into a team. You simply can't. It doesn't work that way. They need time to develop and adapt. Look at Sterling, his big dips in form and confidence. That's typical of young players. As are long-term injuries in their first few seasons as their bodies adapt. You can't build a competitive side out of youngsters and a couple of star players. You need solid seasoned professionals with a few seasons behind them as the backbone of the squad and they cost money. Mismanagement for 4 years had left us in a terrible position and Rodgers is building effectively from scratch.

He's done a good job. Not every signing will come off, that's just a fact of life. But in one year, as i said last time this came up here, we have signed and established as first team players: a striker, a playmaker, a midfielder, a central defender, and a goalkeeper. That's more players brought into the first team than any other top 5 club, as far as I know. I'm sure a couple of strong players will be attracted in the coming window by the team's good form, our competitive position, and the manager's growing reputation in the game. I can be sure of this because of that manager's excellent record not only in signing players, but in successfully integrating new signings into the first team more smoothly and effectively and more intelligently than any other manager in the league.

    ReplyDelete
  129. ok i was worried when we went down to 3 mids after the capis injury. but now i am seeing that maybe selling off shelvey, who is an actual cm and then we loaned out conor coady which would of also received a call up before rossiter this weekend. I feel that in defence we do have more than enough cover to make it work. Send back Moses and Cissoko and bring in one left back like Ryan Bertrand or even Rose from spurs. Bring in Hughes from derby, Jorghino from italy if price is right and why not take a chance on Diame from West Ham and for reals I would swoop up on the other Cissoko at Newcastle and Ben Arfa. I dont know why we spend on spanish players that usually take some time to adjust.

    ReplyDelete
  130. The idea that £15m 'won't get you an established' impact player is just utter cobblers. There are countless examples of players in that price bracket over the years who've done the business. Some recent examples include Remy, Giroud, Podolski, Michu, Benteke, Azpilicueta, Pienaar, Berbatov, Lovren, Vertonghen, Diame, McCarthy, Lukaku, Huddlestone, Wanyama, Bony, Capoue etc, and this is just in the Premier League. Worldwide, there are hundreds more.

You're just making excuses. If you buy better players, you get more consistent performances. Fill the squad out with youngsters from the academy. There are enough of them. Also, don't sel/loan players who'd make good squad players (i.e. Shelvey and Suso)

    ReplyDelete
  131. You still haven't answered the question. I've provided persuasive objective evidence to support the contention that Brad Jones is a decent back-up goalkeeper. You've provided nothing to back up your view that he's 'not a good goalkeeper'. You just keep changing the goalposts. Why is Jones not a good goalkeeper? Please justify that statement. If you cant, don't make it in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  132. How long is he summer transfer window? If LFC can't sign players in the 2-3 month period they have in which to deal, then serious questions needs to be asked.

    ReplyDelete
  133. More excuses. LFC has a whole team of scouts recruitment people working year-round to identify/scout targets. If the club can't sign players, or doesn't have a plan B, C or D to the extent that it has to resort to dross, then there's a serious problem somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  134. rogers has a tendency to sign players regardless if they are needed or not...to bring smith on is an insult to fsg id be asking why are you spending money on players that you cannot or will not use

    ReplyDelete
  135. It is a gamble, especially given the club's historical transfer business re young players. LFC don't have the luxury of buying for the future right now. The club needs player who can contribute to the cause *now*. If Rodgers had spent that 15m on one or two established players, he might not be bitching about squad strength right now.

    ReplyDelete
  136. if you pay millions on players that dont play its a waste of money irrespective of age

    ReplyDelete
  137. That is just not true, and it's disingenuous for you to peddle this myth. Did LFC have CL football when Suarez signed? No. What about Sturridge? Coutinho? NO. CL football is not necessary to sign quality players who can come in and make a consistent impact. It's just another in a long line of excuses, and it suits your argument.

To suggest that LFC are forced to buy youngsters who'll come good in a few years because it's impossible to sign good players now (due to no CL football), is just ludicrous, and doesn't reflect reality.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Seriously though, I think our general lack of defensive solidity is the main problem. Like Carra said yesterday, we've conceded 2 against Arsenal, City and Chelsea. I expect Everton will fare better. They're very solid at the back. They could have lost both Swansea and Southampton games but had a strong enough foundation to win the game.
I'm not happy with any of our defensive players to be honest. I've never really been a big fan of Skrtel, and whilst I acknowledge he has been easily our best defender this season, I also think that we need someone who is going to organise the defence. Skrtel doesn't do that. Agger is too poor with set-pieces and I think the injuries have robbed him of his edge, Sakho looks very immature at times and I can't help but feel that is going to be his nature rather than something he will overcome (hope I'm wrong) and Toure is old but probably, Hull aside, one of our more solid defenders. I don't think Enrique is a top player, though he has the capacity. Johnson seems to have wild dips in form, which I'm convinced relate to his fitness. Finally, I think it is worrying that Mignolet's least sound moments came in our 2 biggest games so far this season. I think he'll be okay, but it has to be considered.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Coutinho,Sturridge.

    ReplyDelete
  140. All those players came with a question mark over them -- maybe Podolski aside, though as I remember he'd not been playing regularly in his favoured position for a while and had agitated for a move. He's hardly turned Arsenal into a title-winning side in his time there.

Here's a couple more who came in around that mark: Sturridge, Coutinho, Allen, even Sakho. These are players who haven't done it at one club or another, who are having to make a big step up to a major club, who are limited in their games in some way. Look at how Giroud struggled when he first arrived at Arsenal, at Vertonghen's struggles for form and fitness. Players like Pienaar who can only play one position. There are reasons these players cost 10-15m and not more.

Of course there are bargains out there: in your list Huddlestone and Michu stand out for me, players in their prime who are great buys for their respective clubs. But each one of these deals is a gamble on a player who is precisely not established, one who is either on the slide or on the up. Allen, Borini, Henderson are examples of this too, and reminders that it doesn't always work out as you might wish, at least not straight away.

I'd like to see a couple of important signings too, of course, but we're going to have to keep gambling for the time being, which means we've got to relax our expectations of each player that comes in to some extent.

I dunno. I'm not making excuses, I'm trying to explain why things aren't as disastrous as you declare them; why I think the transfer *policy* so far has been what's needed. The criticism I think that's sustainable is not about the policy but the performance, specifically in landing the kind of players -- *established*, low-risk, mature and experienced stars -- who could bring up our whole level: Mkhitarayan and Willian come to mind.

    ReplyDelete
  141. I don't think things are disastrous; things are going really well this season, and LFC are right where they need to be. The transfer policy is, however, disastrous (IMO)

    ReplyDelete
  142. Damn, I knew I'd forgotten something!

    ReplyDelete
  143. JK I think what you've said is a little unfair. Unless that is, you have a working knowledge of the goings on at Melwood. There is absolutely no way you can predict that decent players are going to be so ineffective sometimes. Before Cissokho came in I was pretty impressed that we had signed him. I remember we were in for him a while back and some people were creaming themselves at the prospect of bringing him in but he has been awful. Moses has been pretty average, which is disappointing as again, I thought he was a decent player before he went to Chelsea. Just to be clear, I'm no enabler for BR, but the team has largely done very well and I believe that is due to his ability to get the best out of the majority of his players. You mentioned 4 players that have been poor or not used and mentioned another 4 that have been a resounding success, that's just football my friend, not every signing is going to be a gem unfortunately. But to blame BR for our lack of depth is unfair. It takes established squads many seasons to get to the stage where they have a full bodied functioning squad. You can argue that the only squads that are well stocked at the moment are Chelsea and Man City and we all no why..

    ReplyDelete
  144. I'm in agreement with JK on this one. I am not a great fan of BR, but credit where credit is due, he has the team in contention for a top 4 place.

However, things could be so much better, had he invested in more players who were now in the 1st team. If, as many are alluding, some of the players are for the future - fine, but what about the others? Allen, Aspas et al simply have not made the grade and have either not dominated games or scored any goals.

I was a great fan of Rafa's. However, it's his failure in the transfer market (where once he excelled) that ultimately led to his demise (Alonso, Barry, Aquilani et al). I just hope the same fate does not befall BR.

    ReplyDelete
  145. If we would have won at City and Chelsea then hell ya. Rodgers is a poor tactician period. He didn't solve any of the defense problems ever. Chelsea was a repeat of the City match...

    ReplyDelete
  146. I hate when players say, i put it behind me and stay positive for the next game. Why leave it behind you? Solve it - BE EMOTIONAL ABOUT IT. Big problem with our players which obviously Suarez doesn't have.

You control the emotions only after you solve it. If you never let it be you just give up the magic.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Just play Alberto Coutinho Henderson Lucas on Wednesday Rodgers. Come on now.

    ReplyDelete
  148. I like Rodgers as a manager. This Liverpool team against weaker sides is magnificent to watch. But like BArca and Spain (munich and Brazil gave them the smack down) we get crushed when we're up against top players who posses power and pace. Brenden needs to check out whats happening with Bayern when making his next signings. They are the future. The Barca didi men signings is soooooo last year, especially in England.

    ReplyDelete
  149. on this topic I have no sympathy with Rodgers. Should never have loaned out Borini, ROBINSON!!! , Assaidi or Susso.

    ReplyDelete
  150. According to the player himself, Suso asked to go on loan to prove he can play for Liverpool. There's some courage for ya! ;) Good move for him, he's better than Alberto.

Alberto has been on the bench the whole time and it's concerning that he has never challenged for a league start. Enough of this future copout argument he is 21 years old. One poster has stopped replying to me, humble pie can justify anything.

Regardless of squad status (key player, back up, future player etc) players are only a waste of money if Rodgers fails to use them effectively and that is the case here. 15M wasted not just on players being ignored but in the wrong positions too when at the time we needed (and still need) a central midfielder.

  154. You're right on the button Jaimie it's Rogers own fault he has a thin squad. His reluctance to play Alberto is mind boggling this guy is a decent player and putting on a 19yr old Aussie in the last game shows just where Alberto stands. I'm getting tired of hearing all the moaning about the Man C Chelsea results. I fully expected we wouldn't get a result in those away games. What is of concern is the results against Newcastle, Southampton, Everton, Swansea, Hull etc. Squad wasn't so thin then was it Brendan. If we had won those games against those lesser teams we would still be top even after losing the last 2.

  155. showed me that BR is a punter. He's been punting on signings and punting on Smith was farcical. Alberto should have been given a chance. IMO he's a damn fine player.

  156. 37m would have got us Mata.

  157. IMO if LFC don't make champions league BR will be gone. I have no doubt about that. I just hope we do better than sneak into 4th place on goal difference. What's needed is a statement by finishing in the top 2. If BR stops punting I think this will happen. He will be a good manager one day but really needs to get up to speed quickly and stop making naive mistakes such as gambling in the transfer market and with his substitutions and formations.

  158. Wouldn't be so bad if Alberto and Aspas played. I was surprised Aspas wasn't given a chance to be a direct replacement for Sturridge when needed. I thought that's what he was bought for. Should've at least been tried. IMO Suarez has more impact with a strike partner allowing him to drop deeper and spend more time involved in the game. JK's manlove theory shows up with BR's attitude to Allen. I'd have Alberto there any day. Then tese 2 wouldn't have been a waste of money. BR is making that money redundant by refusing to play them both. Aspas looked decent pre-season maybe if he was given the chances that Allen and Hendo were given he would have come right by now. Albert has already shown he's a good player and I'm dumbfounded at his treatment.

  159. This site is all about opinions that's why it was setup. The only opinion that matters is BR's. JK has the right to an opinion as we all have. Voice it but don't criticize others for having one different to yours.

  160. We should have kept Pepe and have real competition in the GK position. I don't understand why this is the only position in a club with no competition to start. Certainly woke up Hart being dropped for a few games and having real competition for his place

    ReplyDelete
  161. Pepe had become complacent and needed strong competition for his place.

  162. Aspas is rubbish? Give the guy a chance to play in position. Should have been given a try in Sturridge's role when injured. JK is right these players are probably good players it's BR's use of them need for them that is in question. BR will probably be a great manager in time but he aint there yet.

  163. Br's treatment of the Spanish players is puzzling. I can only assume they don't train well. There must be some underlying reason.

    ReplyDelete
  164. But yet it wasn't a dive. Also would like to bring up Ivanovic trying to get Suarez sent off again and Suarez did well to keep his cool.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Yet this ref didn't even give a yellow card, which proves the point of how bad it was.

  166. Better than the 6 Man City knocked past Arsenal.

  167. Alberto is young and was bought for the future, there is nothing up with that, he needs to strengthen up and will get the benefit of training with Stevie, Hendo, Coutinho, him, Suso, Coutinho and Hendo are our future midfield.

  168. Because Bobby seems to be a fairweather fan, the type of fan who says a player is terrible if he has an amazing season and then has a bad game.

  169. FFS, why don't you KK apologists (post 2010) get it? Getting into cup finals is great, but they don't sustain the club. Rodgers has LFC in a ladder position that Kenny was unable to get us to in the same time of the year. Newcastle are very unpredictable; I wouldn't exactly be putting them on a pedestal. Everton also seem to have a great manager, but he's walked into a team with solid foundations built by Moyes. What did Rodgers walk into? 100m pounds of ineffective players. He's had to galvanise Henderson, but didn't have much luck with the others. Yes, he's made transfer mistakes himself, but he's made up for them by getting us into a great position.

  170. Coutinho and Sturridge are proper players and beyond doubt BR's best transfers but not in this world do they have the impact Alonso and Mascherano had.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Exactly and for the most part Mignolet has been superb and made a fine save against Chelsea i wouldnt have seen Reina making.

  172. this is mourinhos death by football style, imagine paying to watch that every week

  173. what i cannot understand is why a greater deal has not been made of webb's association with a certain yorkshire police force around the time of hillsbourough and the subsequent cover up...i am not accusing webb of any illegal activity but surely his association alone should mean he does not get within a mile of refing a liverpool game? never mnd that since ruining the world cup final he has bottled every big decision since!!!!!!

  174. Well done Jaimie you have managed to make what is quite obvious to almost everyone hard to quantify. If not getting anywhere near the Australia's fist team or even squad is not evidence enough as well as his very apparent shakiness whenever he has played then I can't really show why. I certainly can't be bothered trying.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Once again: answer the question. You said Jones is 'not a good keeper'. Justify that statement. If you can't, perhaps you should refrain from making generalised, unbacked assertions.

    ReplyDelete
  176. I agree with that. But I don't agree that if you miss out of primary targets you should just sign anyone. I would rather a loan until we are more sure. I can't imagine we would have signed Mhkitarian,, Costa and Willian, so that means it was a no go on three of our preferred players. Personally I am not surprised we didn't do well in the window if we miss out on those players. Transfers are far more complex than the average fan knows. I mean most people know who a good player is but it takes a lot of connections and real inside info to know who is thinking of moving on, what kind of challenge they are looking for, is it money based or career based. Is it just a contract thing, is it a falling out at the club etc etc. Willain and Mhk both ended up moving clubs to the CL winners and runners of the previous two years. Costa got a better deal at Athetico there was a knowledge about these players and a changing of circumstance. I don't think we did enough but we were around and looked very interested. Like I have said numerous times the whole thing is not that simple.

  177. I thought I just did. Your dogging me on this but it's obvious. He may be our second choice keeper but 21 year olds who play in Belgium get ahead of him in Australia's team. But ok if you want I can't prove it. But a player who didn't even play that much for teams like Middlesbourough should not be our second choice.

But I think that you saying I shouldn't make generalised comments about players seems a touch rich considering it is against such things that I have been arguing.

  178. Twit, you are hear to mock, but your the type that would moan all season if these decisions went against your club and expect everyone to sympathise.

  179. Sturridge is the fastest player to reach 20 goals in LFC's history. Don't see what more he can do...
