'He's wonderful': Angry BR admits LFC have 'looked at' €14m star; blasts 'offer' claim

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has reacted with irritation to speculation linking the Reds with Derby County youngster Will Hughes.

When asked today during his pre-Everton press conference about whether there's any truth to the stories linking Liverpool with a move for Hughes, Rodgers barked:

"I do really feel for him [Hughes]. He’s a talented guy, and some people are not doing him any good by constantly linking him to Liverpool.

"I read that we’d put in an offer, but there’s nothing further from the truth.

"He’s a wonderful talent, but he’s at the best place he could be. We’re always looking for talent, and he along with many others is one that we’ve looked at".

Rodgers never usually comments on transfer rumours, but in this instance, he stated that he has Hughes' 'best interests' at heart, which compelled him to make his statement.

So - Liverpool have not put in a bid for Hughes, but Rodgers admits that the club has 'looked' at him, so recent stories claiming that the Reds have scouted the €14m-rated youngster are, in fact, true.

Despite Rodgers' protestations, I still think Hughes will end up at Anfield sooner rather than later.

  1. I told my brother a couple of weeks ago that I thought Rodgers would get rid of Frank Mcparland and he has why ? in house politics the disgraceful thing is that Rodgers took it out on Mcparland's favorite young player which he brought the club by rubbishing him in public - this boy I te best we have got and Rodgers has held him back for spite - a horrible man but I wish Liverpool the best in spite of him.

    NO I MEAN TEXIERA.

  5. Very weird that he came out to refute the rumor.

Sounds to me like their may be some negotiations and Derby is playing hard ball trying to drive the price up.

Can't understand why else a manager would react to a rumor since that's all it is... a rumor.

  6. I'm with billy, do you fancy giving more detail? What did Rodgers say about Texiera that was so bad and why were you so sure that Rodgers would get rid of Mcparland? Do we know it was Rodgers?

  7. HIs value will plummet if we shop him publicly especially on the heels of this injury. It would be perceived as broken goods and too risky an investment for the purchasing club. Speculating 3-5 mil tops. And depending on the nature of the injury he could return ok. Perhaps he would compensate his loss of ability with tactical play. This happens to the experienced players. They need to adjust their game as they age. I say keep him and work thru the injury get him back to the best he can be.

  8. Looks like more 3-5-2 ahead.

  9. Sounds about right. Very crucial point which reflects simply why we should just get a better manager instead of dragging a not good enough on.

  10. Rodgers has the interest of the player at heart. Aww bless you Brendan(!)

I agree with Islesfan, reckon this is more than just a rumor, the Hughes-Liverpool link.

  11. I think Cissokho will do a solid job for us at left back. Needs maybe half-a-dozen more games or so to get settled. I get the impression he really wants to make this work; is very low on confidence; but has real fighting spirit. He's an underdog, isn't he? Let's back the big lump.

  12. Rodgers said " on being asked why Texiera returned from Brentford " if these boys are not good enough they wont play, These teams have players on £4000 a week and they are not going to give there place to a young player who thinks he is better than them" Well he is better than them and he is good enough for our first team now. why sat young players when it was Texiera he was talking about - Rodgers will one day claim the credit for this lad - undeserved.

  13. If Kelly is fit, I've think we've got to revert to the Kelly at RB and Glen at LB system.
Based on what I've seen so far, Cissokho either isn't fit or he isn't good enough. The derby isn't the time to see if he can get up to speed.

  14. You're still banging this drum? You are WRONG. 100%. I explained this to you before buy you still persist in spreading this lie. Rodgers did NOT say the above in response to that question. Here is the actual exchange from the press conference in question:

JOURNO: "Michael Ngoo and Joao Teixeira came back early from their loan spells. What was the reason behind that?"

RODGERS: "There’s different types of loans. There are loans where players go out to play, and there are loans where they go to offer support to a squad. If it helps a club with their finances to bring them back, or they’re not getting enough game time, then that’s what we’ll do. Some clubs, their budgets are such that – I’ve worked at the lower level, and if they’re not playing, and they’re not going to play, they might as well come back here and get prepared for another loan deal. That allows the club to then go and get a reinforcement in a different area. I have to protect the young players here. They will have learned from the experience, good or bad, and they can either progress here, or get another loan spell".

JOURNO"There’s a lot of debate about the experience young players need, but it’s not as simple as throwing them into loan spells as it doesn’t always work out.

RODGERS: "No, absolutely. With all due respect, some of the young players aren’t good enough. Everyone thinks that because you’re at a top club, and you’ve got some good young players that they can just walk into a Ligue One team, but they can’t. I supervised a group at Chelsea where we had some wonderful young players, but the harsh reality is it’s not all bright lights and the Premier League. It’s a tough world".

As you can see, Rodgers did not say, hint, suggest, or imply that Teixeira is 'not good enough'. As I posted in an article at the time, he made a general comment about young players, saying that sometimes, they're not good enough.

Now, please stop spreading this falsehood about Rodgers.

  15. As I've proven below, the notion that Rodgers rubbished Teixeira in public is total BS.

  16. I think Enrique was marked out to go some time back and i suspect he is too expensive

    ReplyDelete
  17. agree. feel BR evaluated the squad last yr as it relates to relative cost to performance which is something the staff evaluates im sure. which was the reasoning to kick him up the back side last year.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think an obituary for Enrique is premature. He is still dependable and when healthy we should have him back. In the interim, I am ok with Sakho or Kelly who is a beast in search of an opportunity. Along the way, I would use Agger at DM when we play Toure, and CB when Toure is rested. Defensive log jam solved!

  19. And it's a shame that Wisdom is out on loan too

  20. I read it on twitter from various reliable sources.
Borrell is definitely city bound and why would anyone not got to city?
Unlimited budget, greater responsibility for him then he would.
I also read that Kenny could be his replacement....

  21. Toure an Agger played against villa pal Sahko hadn't joined the club yet I think I'd go GJ MS DA MSahko as my back 4 on Saturday

    ReplyDelete
  22. Until jan sahko needs to play LB until Kelly is fully fit and ready to play full game then slide Johnson into LB Cissokho not good enough Johnson LB and Kelly RB until new LB comes in
