Transfer Update: LFC still want €20m Barca midfielder Xavi hailed as a 'future star'.

Over the last year, Liverpool have been linked with lots of Barcelona players, including the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Cristian Tello, and Martin Montoya, and in October, Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo claimed that the Reds are now monitoring Sergei Roberto. Speculation in Spain has intensified this week, and new reports suggest that LFC are leading the chase to sign the 21-year old midfielder.

Last month, Mundo Deportivo claimed:

* Liverpool have 'made enquiries' with Roberto's agent over the possibility of a transfer.

* Roberto has a €20m buyout clause in his contract.

A report today in Spanish newspaper Sport further claims that:

* Liverpool remain interested in signing Roberto.
* The Reds are showing more interested than Spurs.
* Roberto is, however, reluctant to leave Barca.

Sergi who? Yes, that's exactly what I thought. Liverpool's midfield is (arguably) in need of an overhaul, but experienced, established players capable of making a quick impact are required, not more young, 'promising' players who may or may not come good in five years.

Plus, €20m for a player with only fifteen games of senior experience in La Liga? Get real. Players that come through Barcelona's famed 'La Masia' academy always seem to have a ridiculously inflated buy-out clause, but I'd be surprised if FSG sanctioned more than £8m for this kind of purchase.

Having said that, though - with Suso farmed out on loan, and the perennial bench-bound Luis Alberto brought in for £6.8m, I doubt FSG would give Rodgers that kind of money for another untested Spanish midfielder.

Former Barca boss Tito Villanova is a fan of Roberto, and prior to his departure from the Nou Camp, he told reporters:

"It's good to know that Barca have [Sergi Roberto] for the long term. He's in a position to play more games with Barca now. He could possibly play more for the first team, but there are very good players in his position."

Barcelona legend Xavi is also convinced of Roberto's talent. In an August press conference, he enthused:

"He [Thiago Alcantara] has extraordinary talent, but he has decided to leave, but there are others, like Sergi Roberto, who is one of our future stars"

With the likes of Messi, Neymar and Sanchez ahead of him (!) the chances of Roberto getting regular first team football at the Nou camp seem slim, but would it be any different at Liverpool?

  1. I find nothing in this kid's statistical record to justify any amount of money whatsoever. We need proven mid-field help now.

  3. ------------------Mignolet
    ---Johnson---Agger---Skrtel---Enrique
    ----------------Lucas/Hendo
    ---Suso--------Gerrard-------Coutinho
    -----------Suarez----Sturridge
if suso keeps playing the way he is, he should be licensed to slot into the right of our midfield. no problems. he will develop alongside Coutinho and the two can be world class. Making a marquee signing like Stefan El-Shaarawy will only boost our chances of lifting the PL. 1 result in the league can change the look of things completely. hope for a win against everton. they are home and have strong players like lukaku, deulofeu, baines, pienaar. but Coutinho will be so crucial in this game. it will be his passes to start our counter-attacks, coz lukaku and co will attack, and a lot due to being at home. but when coutinho picks a pass, sturridge's pace should latch onto it and Luis Suarez movement will probably get him a goal. similar to the game against sunderland 3-1 to LFC. but coutinho will need to pick passes like the 1 he did for Henderson against aston villa. that was a sweet counter attack.

  6. Suso has 1 spot behind the strikers and Coutinho is likely to play wide if they are both playing.
