Injury Shock: LFC defender who 'loves' Man Utd out for 8 months. Career-killer...?

Liverpool youth defender Kristóf Polgár - who signed for the club in March 2013 - has suffered a serious injury will miss the rest of the season, and possibly the start of next season.

The 17-year old Hungarian central defender seriously damaged his knee ligaments in a recent U18 game with Southampton, and the club's medical staff fear that he could be out for up to EIGHT months.

Polgar impressed Liverpool's coaches in two successful loan spells in January and early February before being offered a long-term contract with the club.

In a recent interview, Polgar - formerly part of MTK Budapest FC's youth academy - gushed about his love of the Premier League, but also revealed a disturbing allegiance to one of Liverpool's biggest rivals:

"It was fantastic to spend two weeks at the Liverpool academy. I love English football, so it [the transfer] will definitely be the fulfillment of a dream. As I supported Liverpool FC and Manchester United, and to this day I love them both, but Man United is my favorite".

This is going to be a huge test for Polgar. Eight months is a hell of a long time to miss out on football, and his development will inevitably suffer as a result. New players will come in; existing players will come to the fore, and he'll inevitably fall down the pecking order.

If he's not mentally strong enough to get through the injury, it could ultimately lead to a premature end to his fledgling LFC career. Let's hope that doesn't happen, though. Having watched him for LFC's U18s several times, he has great promise for the future.

I know how Polgar feels. I recently broke my leg in a league game (horror tackle; a real Roy Keane job!), and I'm now out for 4-5 months. I'll be back, though, and hopefully so will he.

Good luck with the recovery, Kristof!

  1. I get the impression Del Bosque was just being nice with his answer...

After all, your point is valid... if he's so "unique" why wouldn't he be picked for Spain.

  2. I think Del Bosque recently mentioned Aspas too saying how he has so many strikers to choose from, but ultimately has to narrow down his selections.

  3. 12 assists in 183 games? And he calls himself a winger? Good lord ... stay away.

  5. And we already have one of those.

  6. Not really in the same sphere as Costa, Mkhitaryan or Willian, is he? I doubt this is the kind of player Liverpool will be after, he doesn't really offer much more than anyone we've already got.

  7. I personally think that these comments are a bit unfair since, just as is the case with national squads like Brazil and perhaps even Germany, the talent pool is so large that depth is never going to be a problem in Spain (at least for a generation). Having said that... Capel would be an ok squad rotation player, not a game-changing player.

  9. Does somebody know on line bookmaker I can offer a bet?
My money would be on us being above manu at the end of the season, and them out of top 4.

  10. We will finish above manu this year, by the way...

  15. Downing has better stats than Capel and has PL experience and look how rubbish he was for us, DON'T buy Capel

  17. Dont dont think he is going to kick us on in january. Need someone with something a bit special.nHe seems like your avg dime a dozen winger. And there's definately others like him del bosque :)

  18. Just feel as if BR is getting a bit carried away with the success of Coutinho signing..I understand he is looking to find hidden gems,Aspas is a smilar signing, but it just has not worked out,Capel's case will be the same, they will sign him up in Jan to allow Sterling to go out on loan.

  19. Yup!!! ...that's all we need ....yet another player that runs around the field like a mad man but achieves very little. I am dreading the Jan transfer window, our obsession with "B" team players who are not considered good enough to get into their own first team has to end, Rodgers did a great job of getting rid of the dead wood but signing a lot of driftwood is not the answer either....please sign some real players (Look what the Ozil signing has done for "Arse'nall")

  20. Plenty of better players around. We're in a good place in the league and can attract better and should be aiming higher.

  21. I think you're right. Capel will probably be yet another cut-price squad player who won't push the team forward, and probably won't feature that much anyway.

  22. With Gerrard playing deeper we now miss his goals from midfield. We need a threat from midfield jasus we've needed this for the last couple of seasons! It was evident against Arsenal no threat = no hesitation in opponents bombing forward.

  23. Its been for ages. Whole my career of being Liverpool fan and manu are cheating they way to get above us and this year we will finally prevail and get back where we should be. And it feels so good that I have to share it and remind everyone that this will happen. And what better place than Liverpool fan site.. Is it anoying?

  24. This guy has ball control technique up there with the very best, and can carry the ball at high speed making him very good on the counter attack. He has never been prolific but maybe he has never been used effectively. Maybe he has only played for teams with shit strikers / low output teams. The fact is there is not in depth statistical data publically available on the guy as the Portuguese league is not covered well. Given his skill set he could make as big an impact as corzola did at arsenal or end up like quaresma at chelsea. It all depends on how he used and how well he adapts. If barry hunter thinks he has it in him I would trust his view and roll the dice.

  25. I am a big Brendan Rodgers fan, but If our gaffer is gonna sign this guy, he should immediately be sacked!! And, I am brutally honest with this!!

  26. Haha it's not annoying but I always wonder why I see you post it on a lot of articles...Now I know, and let's hope you are right :)

  27. You should know I am right... Every year I hoped we will- especially that one with KD (that would have been romantic), but this one I see signs of real changes that WILL get us where we are not for years, and we should be.. kept the faith, now bring me the reward!
