Watch out, Brendan! Is this 'great coach' a serious threat to BR's LFC future...?

As the Bundesliga table attests, Liverpool legend Sami Hyypia is doing a superb job at Bayer Leverkusen, but the allure of Anfield is too much to resist, the big Finn has admitted that his ultimate goal is manager Liverpool FC.

Speaking to German newspaper Bild this week, Hyypia - who spent ten fantastic years at Liverpool - insisted that he's having 'great fun' at Leverkusen, but added:

"I have two special places in my heart. Finland...and Liverpool.

"After the ten years that I played there, it would be a dream someday to be Liverpool manager.

This is not the first time Hyypia's name has popped up in relation to the Liverpool job. In April, Leverkusen's Sporting Director, Rudi Völler argued that a move to Anfield 'at some point' is inevitable. He told TMW:

"Sami has all the ingredients to become a great coach. The only problem is that at some point will go to Liverpool. This is his dream."

I say...bring it on! If/when Rodgers leaves, it would be amazing to have Sami back at Anfield - he embodies everything that is - or should be - great about LFC, and since he left, the gaping void at the heart of Liverpool's defence - and at the heart of LFC itself - has never been filled.

Sami would instantly command respect at Anfield, and he wouldn't have to compromise his position by constantly being on the defensive/defending the indefensible (Dalglish) and/or constantly trying to curry favour by endlessly showering players with servile, overwrought praise.

Admittedly, it would be awful to see Sami hung, drawn and quartered by the fans if things went pear-shaped (and that, sadly, *would* happen irrespective of his legend status), but if he really wants the job, I'm sure he'll be ready for the bubbling cauldron that awaits.

The list of ex-players who want to boss Liverpool is growing. Steven Gerrard recently revealed that he wants the job; Carra has expressed interest in the past, and last year, Markus Babbel also threw his hat into the ring. He told Bild

"It's been a dream of mine to someday become the manager of Liverpool FC. The city, the fans and of course the club are great. I'm 39 and hopefully have years of coaching ahead of me, but I need to be able to demonstrate management success. Of course, all of this is still quite far away, but I think about it daily".

Is Hyypia any threat to Rodgers at this stage? Probably not, but you never know in football. If Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League this season, a change could be in order, and if that happens, Sami's name should (IMO) be at the top of the list.

  5. well written piece and couldnt agree more..as for This season im just not impressed with our start as others are..we miss coutinho which is obvious but we need to hill teams off in the second half..even when we played sunderland i kept having that sense of "oh sh!t sunderland are going to score any minute"...we need three players in january..a defensive mid who is strong-a goalscoring winger and another forward..wish we signed diego costa that guy is on a tear

  6. Sami would be welcomed back anytime be it as a manager or a coach in the future but I would think its along way off. Slightly off topic what do people think about the return of the king. Personally I think it can only be good news but I also know others would beg to differ.

  7. Fantastic to see Kenny back as a director. Anyone else at any other club would have told them to shove it but it just shows his class and love for LFC

  8. Well pleased King Kenny is back & director is the right role at this stage of Kenny's career with the club. A legendary player winning us prizes, successful 1st period as manager & present through Hillsborough, suffering with fans & families & attending all those funerals. Even in his 2nd phase as manager, after all the change & turmoil as the club changed hands, he won us a cup. Is rite he's back.

  9. Sami looks like a potential great manager in waiting for LFC. He's doing a great job at Leverkusen & getting great experience. His management achievements are above Babbel, & Stevie has none yet so he's the best next man. When Brendan moves or is moved on, it'd be fantastic to see Sami back.

  11. It also shows that the bridges between FSG and Kenny weren't burnt when they sacked him.

  14. If he could please do it right now and bring some of his players with him that would be grand thanks. Oh and maybe before he moves he could buy some of our more classy summer signings too...

  15. Gerrard would be good of course but Hyypia has shown he has what it takes already. If Gerrard wants to manage us he either has to be groomed at Anfield and willing to coach lower teams first like they do at Ajax or prove himself somewhere else like Sammi has.
