'I just want to play' - LFC star reveals 'frustration' over January transfer collapse.

A couple of weeks ago, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers revealed that he planned to send young defender Andre Wisdom out on loan, arguing that he lacked the experience required to be a regular in the first team. That move didn't materialise, and Wisdom admits that he's anxious over his prospect of first team football over the next few months.

Wigan were reportedly close to agreeing a loan move for Wisdom on transfer deadline day, but for whatever reason, the deal didn't happen.

When asked this week about the failure of the loan move, and his chances of regular football this season, Wisdom - currently the England U21 captain - told reporters:

"It is always frustrating [when a loan deal breaks down] because any player, at any age just wants to play.

"Maybe you might not get as much opportunities as you like, but when you get them you have to try and take them as best as possible, try to impress the manager and everybody else."

"I am at a great club and I love my job. You just play when you get the opportunity. You are always aware of it [the possibility of a loan deal] and are always thinking: "Am I going somewhere? Am I not?".

For me, Rodgers' handling of Wisdom last season seemed a little strange.

* Liverpool lost only 3 of the 19 games Wisdom started last season.
* He played consistently well at right back.
* Then, halfway through the year, Rodgers sent Wisdom back to the youth set-up.

The turning point appears to have been the ill-fated home defeat to Oldham Athletic, a game that also spelled doom for several other players, including Sebastian Coates, Jonjo Shelvey, and Martin Skrtel. After that game at the end of January, Wisdom made only two more appearances for the rest of the season, which (to me) seemed harsh after performing so well in the majority of games.

Things may be looking up, though. When one door closes, another opens, and Glen Johnson's recent injury means that Wisdom has a great chance of a run in the team at right back. He is the obvious option, unless, of course, Rodgers decides to play Sakho, Ilori, or even Skrtel out of position on the right (!)

  1. He was not sent out on loan coz GJ got injured. He was due to join Wigan or Fulham the following day.

  2. i'm glad he didn't go. he has great potential and with a bit more discipline, he could be a great asset this season.

  4. Wisdom isn't a good right back at all as he doesn't offer anything in attack.

He should play in his natural position only, which is centre back, nothing else.

By the way, isn't the loan market active until october ?? Or is it, loaning players to lower divisions ??

  5. The loan would benefit him, Like it has suso(who doing great in Spain) he didn't go out on loan because of Johnstone Injury, but when the loan window opens he will go out. (And when glen is fully fit)

  11. How was is it strange when he played when Enrique was injured and also when Enrique was not playing well. That game you talking about was an away game. BR has handled him very well. Wisdom wants to play CB that's why he was going to go on loan to get the experience required. Pre season games he made costly mistakes playing CB. Personally, I think he is going to be taking over GJ spot.

  14. This article's a bit rubbish... you say the move failed for "whatever" reason but then go on to explain how Glen Johnson is now injured... that's why the move didn't surface... Wisdom is a good player and England u21 captain, but with Kelly just back and Johnson out, Rodgers was right to keep him at the club for cover.

  15. Not wanting to be awkward or anything but what were these costly mistakes he made pre season. I was under the impression we conceded 2 goals in 7 games. Having not seen any of them, was he at fault?

  16. Goal against Celtics. Capital one cup second goal. Ma mistake.

  17. He was also at fault for Notts County's first goal as well. Wasn't watching is man.

  18. need to loan him 4 the next couple of years coz not good enough yet,

  19. And that is exactly why he didn't get loaned out. Johnson's injury and the fact that BR said only two weeks ago that Kelly was far from ready to return. It would have left us with no RB cover. Good decision, makes perfect sense.

  20. Isn't the championship a lower division? And aren't Wigan in that?

    ReplyDelete
  21. You are completely correct. Just a habit to think of Wigan being an EPL team.

  22. Ah ok, I thought for a second there was an exception for championship clubs. With some of the rules in football today, it wouldn't surprise me one bit :-)
