After Liverpool's 1-0 defeat to Southampton on Saturday, Daniel Agger admitted that he 'shouldn't have played' in the game, and conceded he'd 'made a mistake' in allowing himself to be selected. Predictably, Agger's rib injury flared up again during the game, and Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has today provided an update on the Dane's current fitness levels.
In his pre-Manchester United press conference today, Rodgers explained:
"We’ll see how he [Agger] is for the [Man United] game.
"He could be a doubt. He’s not quite recovered. He wanted to go give it a go at the weekend.
He was struggling with his breathing because of his ribs, but he’s a player that makes a good recovery, though, and we’ll see".
I can't believe that Rodgers is even contemplating starting Agger against Man United? Surely, it's a no-brainer to rest him? Liverpool have enough central defenders to cover him, and there's no pressing need to rush him back into action again.
It was a massive - avoidable - mistake to start Agger against Southampton. I called it negligence on Saturday, and I stand by that today, and if Rodgers plays him on Wednesday it will be a case of continued negligence from the manager.
Agger's inability to stay with his man cost Liverpool yet another goal on Saturday, and a stray pass almost led to Southampton grabbing a second. For those reasons alone he should be 'rested', but the injury situation should make it automatic.
I have to admit, I find it a little disconcerting that Rodgers is willing to risk injured players simply because they want to 'give it a go'. He has to exercise better judgment than that, surely?

Do you ever have anything positive to say about Rodgers? Thought he proved he's a quick learner but all you do is moan moan moan. I understand why ppl get fed up with you.
ReplyDeleteNo, JK does appreciate where its due. The site's aim is Critical Realism about LFC, so either you read it or you don't come here.
ReplyDeleteI agree with u here Jamie we have enough cover to rest agger I just wish the same was for our midfield..would like to see us change that around abit for this game
ReplyDeleteI agree with you mate. I feel its not the right time for D-Agger to come just yet. He should be rested till next week and shouldn't be played even for Sunderland match. We need to rest him because we already have enough cover for him and Skrtel & Toure are doing great IMO. The match with Saints was a day off along with wrong team setup and tactics which shouldn't be repeated by BR or the club is going to pay the price with its position which it has already done and should be refrained again from.
ReplyDeleteI'd drop him anyway, regardless of injury. He's been iffy from the start and I reckon it might be good to see Kolo and Sakho play beside each other, against a good side in testing circumstances. The main problem at the weekend was the lack of any attacking outlet from the fullbacks, and a lack of a connection between midfield and the attack. Suarez coming back might help the latter part of that, and I'd put Enrique and, due to a lack of options, Wisdom back in. Besides, United's wingers have been awful for the past year.
ReplyDeleteIf Suarez turns out to be a direct swap for Sturridge, then I'd kick Gerrard up the arse and tell him to play in behind Suarez in a more advanced role. Henderson and Lucas have the legs and drive to cover the defensive midfield role, and Steven is arguably our best number 10 in the absence of Coutinho.
Our main worry from a United point of view would be that Rooney looks hungry and focused. And I imagine Moyes will surely find a space for Kagawa in the Capital One Cup squad, so we might not be prepared for what he can offer.
Overall, if we start on the front foot, and if our 2 defensive midfielder are focused for 90 minutes, then we can probably play a slightly higher line, and our attackers won't be as isolated as they have been for the past couple of games. Big game for Moses this too.
Agree 100% (which is a first, the 100% that is ;-)) crazy risking him irrespective of the opposition, 4th place is THE ONLY target this year and after Saturday I fear that's going to be beyond us :-(
ReplyDeleteReally don't understand why people on here never seem to grasp Jaimie's style.
ReplyDeleteHe wanted to play? That's not what he said....We don't care about the league cup - it would be nice if the suits at Anfield would get that into their thick skulls
ReplyDeleteSakho seems better than agger..
ReplyDeleteatm id have skrtel and toure..going by form
ReplyDeleteSpot on!!!
ReplyDeleteTime for Toure and Sakho imo
ReplyDeleteAgger might have played it down though, and that could be why Rodgers selected him.
ReplyDeleteI think we have enough cover to not play him on Wednesday though, no point in risking him.
Got a feeling we might lose it though, Utd lost heavily on the weekend, and we beat them the other week.
I said by form sakho is strong but sometimes looks lost and that's understandable a few games in...I just don't see any reason to drop skrtl hes played well
ReplyDeleteAgger needs to fully recover. BR is starting to get on my nerves with this. Agger is injury prone and playing him on Sat was rediculous.
ReplyDeleteGerrard needs to be dropped for this game as well.
Not impressed at all with Saturday, from formation, performance to finding out Agger was already injure and still played.
Toure and Sakho all the way if Agger is not fit.
ReplyDeleteToure is a leader, we cannot afford to have passengers in our back four!
I agree with gerrards performance on the weekend however he wont be dropped especially for a man utd game..id take this opportunity to push him up higher behind sturridge and drop hendo back to help lucas
ReplyDeleteThis is getting boring now.
ReplyDeleteRodgers asked Agger if he was able to play and Agger said yes.
ReplyDeleteCan't put all the blame on Rodgers. Agger did play in 35 EPL matches last season, more than he ever has!
1 -The player deserve to be drop is either gerrard or lucas.
ReplyDelete2- Against Man U, we cannot put a slow player on RB/LB position. We will be bullied.
3- I suggest we put Sahko or Agger on DM role and let Gerrard fill in Coutinho role.
4- Normally Man U wont serious on Carling but Moyes want to redeem himself from humiliation, i do believe he will put a strong squad.
5- Formation 4-3-3 really not suit us atm. Especially the team added lot new faces it may take time to gel...
brace for another disappointment???
ReplyDeleteThe manager's responsibility is to the team, not the player. He should look at the objective facts about a player's injury, not just take his word for it. Rodgers admitted over the weekend that Agger was feeling pain *before* the game, so he knew the injury wasn't healed. At that point, he should've made the decision to rest him. He didn't, and LFC suffered for it.
ReplyDeleteIf Sturridge isn't healthy, he should be either on the bench or not in the team altogether.
ReplyDeleteSuarez will undoubtedly start.
I'd like to see us throw some new guys in too... Aspas getting yet another run can't hurt. Luis Alberto. Joe Allen (if healthy). Henderson. Gerrard/Lucas.
But we have seen the same thing with Gerrard. He has been played while having injuries under every manager.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing wrong with putting trust in your best players. I am pretty sure just about every manager asks their best player whether they are able to play when carrying injuries.
Not confident at all for the Man U game.
ReplyDeleteSuarez should play behind Sturridge
What IF BR put same team against Soton and we win?
ReplyDeleteAllen?
ReplyDeleteYes but surely BR is aware how injury prone Agger is? Playing him was a risk.
ReplyDeleteGerrard was injury prone as well and many times he played while injured and then that prolonged his injury.
Then I will wonder again why we played so poorly against Soton.
ReplyDeleteSimple : Bcoz is bookie match fixing and there we earn to build/extend Anfield ! hehee (joking)
ReplyDeleteWow PL have its first manager sacking in the name of Di Canio, hopefully it'll be easier for LFC to win over a manager-less Sunderland. :D
ReplyDeletewe had spy over there ! hehehee agent borini will tell us in and out...mortgage everything and bet on
ReplyDeleteLMFAO :D
ReplyDeleteThey're planning to get Di Matteo, now that's something to worry though.
Toure has to start as CB on Wednesday. Agger needs to fully recover. And Enrique if fit (don't know what BR was on about) needs to play as he is the only dedicated experienced left back we have.
ReplyDeleteI would play Sturridge if he is fit with Suarez on the right on just behind him. I would also play Ibe.
Drop Gerrard and start with Lucas and Hendo in mid.
GK- Mignolet
LB- Enrique
CB- Kolo
CB- Skrtel/Sakho
RB- Wisdom/ Kelly (if he was on the bench then he is fit enough to play)
CM- Hendo
CM- Lucas
LW-Moses
RW- Ibe/Sterling
AM-Suarez
ST- Sturridge
I don't think dropping Gerrard would do good to the morale of the players, you need players like Gerrard to start the match so we've that mental toughness needed at the start of the match. I doubt Ibe/Sterling will play because that position is being covered by Hendo. IF(which is a very big one) Gerrard gets dropped which is unlikely in this world that we live then we can hope Ibe/Sterling playing on RW.
ReplyDeleteAllen? Alberto? they should give a go in this occasion
ReplyDeleteHmmm good point actually, it's time for them.
ReplyDeleteThat's true. We just need to start trying a different approach without him to be honest. Maybe giving Allen or Alberto a chance.
ReplyDeleteMy main point is Gerrard, I don't think the team is strong enough mentally ATM to cope with a high intensity match as that of ManUre, it won't do any good if we have Agger and Gerrard out of a match against ManUre because the young guns will be shut even before they lock and load.
ReplyDeleteThat is correct, Agger is injury prone and has been his ENTIRE CAREER so what difference does it make if he gets played with an injury when he can pick up an injury at any time when he is not fully fit?
ReplyDeleteIs it only me or that Kolo Toure speaks a lot with the press? He's been talking about everything at LFC lol, literally everything. Must be feeling light after coming to us rofl :D
ReplyDeleteWhats up with Sakho? This guy not even played for a season and already has plans to return to PSG, now we're polishing players so that they can go back to where they came from.
ReplyDeleteI think LFC allows him to speak to the press as much as he wants because of being a very respectful person.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen Suarez speaking to the press lately?
Nay, he'll start in the Jan window. :P
ReplyDeleteI think Skrtyl was poor on Sat. He panicked when in possession and whenever he was pressed. Utd like to press their opposing players, and they will be more clinical in punishing mistakes than Southampton were.
ReplyDeleteUtd don't have a big CF to worry about, more clever, technical players, so that's why I don't think MS is the best choice. Plus the cup is the ideal time to get Sakho up to speed
While the choice of 4 CB was slightly odd – it wasn’t as whacky as it appeared on the Surface. Kolo IMO did a better job at RB than Wisdom Would. Sakho wasn’t terrible at LB either – however, he should have played in the center, Enrique should have been LB, and Aggar off. The defense wasn’t really the problem, everyone except for Aggar played well. The midfield while not really terribe, wasn’t effective, and the forward line weren’t gelling – Aspas was terrible. It’s an odd thing, individually most of the team were fairly good, with the exception of Aggar and Aspas. The problem lies in the midfield and forward lines – the players are ok, but there is the “glue” missing, to stick them together, with Coutinho gone, Suarez should be able to improve this somewhat, both in getting the ball from the midfield forward, and also by making key passes closer to goal (Sturridge and Moses aren’t the greatest here – Aspas was good in game 1, then has gone missing).
ReplyDeleteOn the bright side, most of the team played hard, and fairly well – some work on the individual level is needed (i.e Gerrard could try harder to get some balls – Sterling could work on his 1st touch, Sturridge knowing when to pass instead of shoot), other than that some minor tweaking in link up play, and things will improve.
It was a winnable game, but not the easiest team, and not a bad time to get a wake up call. This team is far better than last year’s, Reina would have conceded 3 yesterday, Kolo is playing hard, Moses is looking good, Sturridge is good – with Suarez back, the next month’s league games should be easy. The United game, we’ll see, but the league games are all winnable and momentum will grow from there.
Give over. All he said was his story is not over with PSG, it's his childhood club, like SG. At no time did he say he would be back. He's 23, not 33...
ReplyDeletecome off it M8...the saints played us off the park at home.......
ReplyDeleteyou have more chance of finding rocking horse shit than rogers dropping Gerrard.....it wouldn't surprise me if still played the same defence
ReplyDeleteat least it shows how good jose and johnson are....these two players come in for stick but they are head and shoulders above anything else in our squad and most of the prem..
ReplyDeletemost footballers care about them selves....its time for a change
ReplyDeleteI don't deny it. But I'm pretty sure it will get better, Suarez is back, and that will make all the difference in the coming games, and Coutinho and Johnson will be back in no time.
ReplyDeleteAs everyone else has been saying - it is time for Gerrard to sit on the bench - at least part of the time.
I don't think the game was as horrific as it could be. 1-0 loss isn't the end of the world. I think it was more of an off game, with some key elements missing - the key element being creativity will be back - hopefully form and flow return along with it - it's no big deal. At this point Allen deserves some game time (is he recovered?) Gerrard needs some rest. The new guys will settle, the injured guys will get better.
What would be nice is to see a goal from someone other than Sturridge, Moses, or Suarez.
I agree, as much as it pains me to say, Johnson is missed.
ReplyDeleteI don't think SG does though.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't hurt to have someone of his ilk and stature to be back at LFC. The guy breathes LFC and we should make him a priority as he can easily make us push for the top 4 realistically.
ReplyDeleteit seldom works out second time round....for me we need creatvity but we also need pace and goals....xabi lucas and gerrad im sorry to say does nothing for me.......
ReplyDeleteAlonso should have never been sold in the first place!
ReplyDeleteafter the shambles in defense on Saturday no wonder he wants out....ive stated numerous times all this fannying about in defense is a disaster waiting to happen...teams are wise to it
ReplyDeletejaimie your spot on about gerrard i was only saying to the lads iwork with he should drop gerrard hes just not performing the only thing is either is lucas so were caught seriously short of quality i dont know why he had to spend the money on aspas ilori alberto when we needed a quality midfieder dare i say eriksen for 11 mil
ReplyDeleteagger was dire on saturady
ReplyDeleteJust looking at the U21s on TV now, That new CB Paez from RM looks a proper prospect. BTW we are beating Man C away 2-0.
ReplyDeletewhere can i tune in mate
ReplyDeleteits LFC TV, but if u go to viponlinesports.eu you will get it there also, click football t\hen choose the game, better if you are using google chrome with adblock added.
ReplyDeleteerikson ,watama are just a few who where available who we should have gone for......the problem we have is we have no one and i mean no one as back up in midfield....we couldd play Allen and hendo with someone but who we just dont have anyone....alberto is no midfielder ...he cant tackle....aspas is just a poor mans danny murphy ...so thats it....in a nutshell rogers has to go with gerrard and co because there isnt a plan b...and as the old saying goes...IF YOU DONT HAVE A BACK UP YOU DONT HAVE A PLAN
ReplyDeleteviponlinesport
ReplyDeleteBenayoun
ReplyDeleteiknow mate if you and i can see it what the fxxk are they doing for their wages total shambles
ReplyDeletethanks
ReplyDeleteThats an awful thing to say about Danny Murphy, .:)
ReplyDeleteAnother good win for Liverpool U21's, Man City 0 - 2 Liverpool........Adam Morgan 45 yard screamer!!!
ReplyDeleteCan't see why we would play him injured. It just doesn't make sense. I have a concern about the full back problem though. I think Enrique has been in woeful form baring the United game. I think his defending has been OK o the whole but his passing has been terrible and I am not sure I can watch him do another circle so he can use his left foot again without screaming.
ReplyDeleteI would have him back definitely. He may not have pace but he has two very good feet and a range of passing that only Gerard in the team has. If we play the same way we have been and have Gerard and Alonso in the deep positions we will have less of a problem as putting pressure on them would reap less rewards than on Gerard and Lucas. Having said this I don't think this is the end of our troubles. But I do think it will help.
ReplyDeleteId take him, we need winners in our squad plus look at how the return of flamini has given arsenal a boost we his prior experience being at the club, sometimes it can work out 2nd time around.
ReplyDeletewould be the best 6 million you could spend, sheer class and younger players would learn invaluable lessons from the maestro, pace isn't essential for a defensive midfielder who can lay balls all day on a sixpence.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure he'd be good for our kind of football. He was often guilty of getting caught with the ball and although he was part of that one extremely good league season under Rafa he also had a poor year before that. He's a classy footballer but perhaps at his age he's not what we need. A few too many years in Spain would mean he's just not going to be able to work at the pace we need. It's another good example of wanting to have good players at the club but needing to be selective because just signing a "name" player doesn't guarantee success.
ReplyDeleteWith Xabi in midfield who needs Lucas? Xabi, Gerrard, Henderson would work. Xabi means more ball retention which in effect means you don't need a ball winner. But he can not be our only solution. He would need to be an additional bonus to have in our squad based on his experience and what he can offer short term.
ReplyDeleteI once saw an ad sign, I think it was Harley Davidson's, that said "It's hard to be humble when you're the best" :-) In fairness, Mourinho has won the league with every club he's managed since Porto, has won to Champions League titles and a couple of other cups. He is a very very good manager and I can understand Chelski supporters wanting him back because they have never been the same since he left. The only one who came close was Ancelloti but for some reason he wasn't given much credit by Abramovic. Other than that I wish them no luck what so ever for the despicable way they treated Benitez.
ReplyDeleteI'm over my initial disappointment and anger too and, pointwise, we're still in a decent position of course. We also have Sunderland coming up which is a good chance to redeem ourselves and get back to winning ways. But all that does not mean that I don't believe there is something structurally wrong at Anfield and that we're repeating the same mistakes we made in the past. I fully expect another up and down, inconsistent, season which hopefully ends in a Lucky fourth place finish but somehow I'm a lot less confident since the final week of August than I was before.
ReplyDeleteAnd my nan seems better than both of them
ReplyDeletefor the league cup? yeah let's risk our best performing players getting suspended or injured for the most meaningless of trophies ever invented.
ReplyDeleteSturridge should be given a rest and if we get kicked out of the milk cup as a result then so be it
ReplyDeleteI wish but there's no way Rodgers won't play Gerrard in this one unfortunately. Maybe at best he will make the switch at the 60th minute when we are 2-0 down. And maybe we will squeeze a goal then.
ReplyDeleteBest chances for us is if Suarez bites a hell of a game. Unfortunately.
All been said cause i don't trust in BR anymore. He will make mistakes once again no question.
If we will make it to play well and lose i will be satisfied, but who am i kidding.
I feel bad for Suarez. When the kind of Swansea and Southampton preformaces are guaranteed every couple of weeks and it doesn't stop ever. And another so so window.
ReplyDeleteNotice how Sturridge begins to show similar signs of disappointment.
Alberto must start against mancs. I believe he and Suarez will be force together. Gerrard should start and if awful then send
ReplyDeleteHenderson in for second half. This been said on terms that Sturridge play at all.
I totally disagree. Alonso's ability to read the game has not been lost. He is still in very good shape too. Rodgers and Coutinho would love to have a player with his vision in our midfield.
ReplyDeleteI am worried about Moses's passing abilities for that matter.
ReplyDeleteThere should be a great playmaker behind these 3. We have either Gerrard or Alberto.
What worries me here is the nativity over the subject. It's Xabi Alonso for almost no money at all! We should be like lions to sign him. But of course what can you accept from this board. Joventus are probably all over it hard and are doing real Football Club work to sign him for they can spot this bargain.
ReplyDeleteLFC SHOULD DO ALL THEY CAN AND MORE FOR THIS ONE.
Lucas and Gerrard do not seem to gel all that well and our midfield is suffering as a result of that.
ReplyDeleteA midfield trio consisting of the following...
--Gerrard---Alonso--
-------Coutinho-----
...will win us the league.
we should come up with a 10m offer for start just the ensure it.
ReplyDeleteyou mean: "Gerrard, i can't see it anymore...". Alonso is top class.
ReplyDeleteGet him and another top playmaker and were roughly set.
We can go back to playing 4 midfielders. Lucas Alonso - Playmaker - and Coutinho - Then Suarez Sturridge. Gerrard, Moses and more to earn a place. Now you have a bench, now you have a team.
Stop playing 2 def mid all the time...i thought the while idea of buying skillfull players is we can play any fofmation ..if henderson has all the energy then just play him like mascherano used to ..sakho could play ther illori can play ..alberto needs to play more higher up class act
ReplyDeleteLove the gerrard talk. But Eriksen had nothing to do with Alberto, Ilori, Aspas[natural striker. Did he play there? did he play calm yet?]. I believe btw the the only one from which who might come up as a bad buy is Aspas, but time might surprise on this one, though the odds are unlikely i agree. We had money for a another playmaker. We've bidden for Mata, Willian, Makitiriyan, and were stupid not to push for Eriksen. That's the all story of Eriksen: Weird Rodgers.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that seems stupid for me about getting Alberto is why Rodgers doesn't play him? He wanted him and got him - now play the men. Coutinho is injured, what do you have? I see no other legitimate option, accept maybe Gerrard on a very good day.
Alberto will come good and even great i guarantee you. Maybe not under Rodgers'es awkward management, Ilori two, while a top playmaker is something we should have got, as a top priority yes, and should get in the future. But you can't put it on this fellows, they would have wonder in anyway threw the year.
My starting eleven would look a little like this if we did have Alonso in our squad.
ReplyDelete--------------Mignolet--------------
Johnson-Toure-Sakho-Enrique
--------Gerrard---Alonso---------
-------------Coutinho--------------
--Suarez---Sturridge---Moses--
If Rodgers doesn't get it he should walk home right now. We got used to understanding way to many weird and stupid decision making.
ReplyDeleteI just hope drastic changes are going to happen in Jan. Midfield need a reform. I personally would go for Xabi, Jorginho and first team Playmaker.
ReplyDeleteHow concerning is it when Rodgers says he doesn't realized how important Johnson is until he got injured. No way he is that dumb so does he just like to lie?
ReplyDeleteYour comment is so pointless. How much time has Rodgers had to make the squad his?
ReplyDeleteWhy not go for Michael Bradley of AS Roma? He's expendable due to Strootman and he's a great box-to-box midfielder and defensive mid. He's also very versatile and big in the box. Also alonso would be better at gerrards current role, but we can't drop the captain from the starting squad.
ReplyDeleteDon't bet on it. It's not as if we tried and failed in the summer. We just didn't try. Leaving us with only four midfielders for three positions.
ReplyDeleteAlonso? Caught on the ball? Not for the last 3 or 4 seasons he hasn't. All of our problems with moving the ball through defence and off the keeper would disappear with him.
ReplyDeleteTrouble is , we would need a very dynamic ball winner/ screener to play with him and Lucas seems not to be mobile enough for that role. With Henderson to fetch and carry, it could work. Gerrard and Xabi rotating would prolong both careers
He was talking about the fans.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Southampton put us under pressure by leaving just Skrtyl un -pressed, then pushing up quickly on him to make him panic.
ReplyDeleteAlonso is the one player Skrtyl would have trusted to receive the ball under pressure and still retain possession
Mignolet
ReplyDeleteKelly ------- Toure ----- Skrtel ------ Enrique
Gerrard ----- Sakho
Henderson-------Suarez -------- Moses
Sturridge
Subs : Jones , Illori , Alberto, Aspas, Sterling,Agger
And even Allen. The only problem is that Xabi can last at the most for another 3 years.
ReplyDeleteWILL HUGHES
ReplyDeleteGerrard and Alonso almost won the league in 2009 with Liverpool . it gets harder every year so surely it wont happen now and as a defensive mid is also needed where would the energy come from ? Having said this Lucas and Alonso could play in the middle with Gerrard,Coutinho,Suarez, behind Sturridge . Maybe but I am sure we are better going for the new Alonso's of the world. There is players out there we just need to get the bids in without being pushed out the way by a cl club. Keep it on the qt till the deal is done.
ReplyDeletetotally agree with this as its things like this that could cost us a top 4 spot. A midfielder was a must .
ReplyDeleteits a compliment to Murphy . a dig at Aspas right enough. He has been one of the worst signings I have seen at Anfield including Konchesky <Poulsen, Jovanovic, He kids on like he is running for the ball and puts no effort in whatsoever.
ReplyDeleteI don't think its bad just yet, I will wait for at least 3 more matches and then we can have at least a minimal idea of what its going to be.
ReplyDeleteWe need a character in the squad and I don't think anyone has it stronger than that of SG.
ReplyDeleteHe needs to rested IMO. BR needs to stop with playing stars all the time if they aren't doing good. That guy still needs to learn some more authority or else it'll be players deciding the team sheet and not him.
ReplyDelete
