'He's got a big future': BR sends LFC's Chief Scout to watch 'excellent' €12m maestro.

Liverpool continue to be linked with a move for Derby County's Will Hughes, and after missing out on the midfielder over the summer, The Reds - along with Manchester City and Manchester United - are still scouting the 18-year old, with a view to making a bid during the January transfer window.

According to The Mirror:

"Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is stepping up his chase for Derby's midfield magician Will Hughes.

"Rodgers sent chief scout Dave Fallows to watch the England Under-21 international, who is seen as a potential long-term replacement for Steven Gerrard".

Liverpool have been scouting Hughes for months now, and in August, The Independent claimed:

"Liverpool are close to agreeing a deal for Will Hughes. Hughes has been watched extensively over the last six months by Liverpool scout Barry Hunter".

Other Reports further claimed that:

* Rodgers has instructed Hunter/Fallows to continue scouting Hughes until the new year.
* Liverpool are prepared pay up to €12m for Hughes.
* The Reds are interested in an ongoing player-exchange partnership with Derby.

Earlier this month, Rams boss Nigel Clough confirmed that he believes big clubs will be in for Hughes in January. He told the Barton Mail:

"I think there will be interest in Will in January. I think that is when everybody can assess the first six months of the season, where they are going and where they are a bit short."

When asked in August about speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League, Hughes - recently described as 'a real talent' and 'exciting to watch' by Stuart Pearce - told reporters:

“I have not heard anything or been told anything about any speculation since my injury and I prefer to keep it that way. In a way, that is a relief. I just want to get on with my football and keep my mind on my football, which I feel I have always done.”

In a recent column for the Daily Mail, Jamie Carragher highlighted Hughes as one of the top young players in the country. He enthused:

"His [Hughes'] reputation is growing by the week and he was excellent when England’s Under 21s demolished Scotland 6-0 earlier this month. The way he carries himself and the way he passes the ball suggest he has got a big future".

Steven Gerrard is a Liverpool legend, but his influence and impact on the team (in purely footballing terms) is waning, and as depressing as it is to contemplate, he will need to be replaced sooner rather than later.

'Replaced' is the wrong word, as Gerrard is arguably a once in a generation-type player for LFC, and it will be impossible to replace him in the traditional sense, but the club has to start thinking about it now, and looking at players like Hughes is a step in the right direction.

  1. Another overpriced Englishman. It is said Derby want up to £15m, Eriksen cost £11m, Thiago Alcantara £15m, Coutinho £8.5m, Sturridge £12m,
is this unproven kid really worth that, I dont think so, and he is no Stevie G, not by a million miles.

  2. Johnny he's gonna be England's main man one day. Then you'll wish you'd forked out for him

  3. More potential thats all, who will tell me he is better than Suso or Texeira, did you see Suso's performance for Almeria yesterday, ?
Hughes might have a future, but we should not pay that sort of money for him. He is a LFC fan I know, which gives us the edge. We seen yesterday, we dont need potential, we need players to walk into the first eleven, as promised during the transfer window.

  4. We've missed players like this before because we didn't wanna pay the fee required and then some other club steps in a reaps the benefits. Ronaldo anyone...? If we don't get him someone else inevitably will.

  5. there are bona fide first teamer out there for this money...hes neat and tidy as a player but not at 15m

  6. Undoubtably a good prospect like Ross Barkley but Eriksen was available for about £10M, so if we really really tried and got in there early doors then we would have a superb attacking midfielder who is technically minded, with experience at a big club Ajax and champions league experience etc etc. quality and our price range. Really missed a trick here

  7. I love the caption of the video. Englands "next" great midfielder. Because there have been so many...

Good to know we can invest heavily in these type of players since our first team is in great shape and we didnt get run over in midfield for the third time in twelve months yesterday

His a good player and won't be a bad addition to our team, it would take a couple of years for him to be undoubted for first team. He shows lots of signs of brilliance, especially technique and passing fluency, and great stabs forwards to create dangerous attacks.

That being said, we should not over pay for him cause it's not guaranteed in anyway that he will be a success. To much similar tragedies in LFC transfer markets in recent years. We should be scouting at least three more options for that position.

Also, i must mention, I would rather we get Jorginho, i believe his much more talented and will be huge in his future. This suggestion i felt also came from the good times of Rodgers after he brought Sturrhinho, before he crossed the threshold and became nuts. Watched him with Verona for some time now, he a top DM, unbelievable for his age. Not the same player as Hughes but still i prefer we put more of our efforts there.

and for a good reason. There's not one good reason for why we didn't try hard to get him. Are our board that stupid that he didn;t realize after missing on Makitiriyan and Willian that Eriksen is what we have and must get for we needed a creative midfielder who can score. But the main point. Even if he would have done bad for us this year, we could probably have sold him for more then what he was brought for. Such a disappointing board. It is so frustrating.

  12. I've just watched palace get beat by an excellent Swansea team and it's clear to me we sold our gerrard replacement. The mistakes shelvey made against us he will grow out of sooner rather than later. Today he bossed the midfield, offered the mobility we're sorely lacking and wasnt scared to pass back to to his keeper! Mark my words - we've knobbed it selling him.

  13. No, believe me we didn't. He's just having a good time just like he did last year. I don't consider him to be anywhere near a top 6 team player as of now even with his current games.

  14. we've sold one of the best young English midfielerd for 5-6m - there's no way that's good business. Secondly, he's 21, so still maturing. I've never watched Hughes, so I can't comment but I don't think we'll to wait long to see who's right about shelved.

  15. we need theese technically good players arsernal have carzola, ozil, wilshere and ramsey
at lfc only coutinho that can be classes in the same bracket
although allen and alberto can improve
ps suso looks real for next year

coutinho-carzola, wilshere - hughes, ramsey-suso and hopefully we can buy mata to match ozil
as for gerard he should be holding midfield with lucas as back up

  16. when is allen coming back him and suarez will be massive boost
    suraez,sturridge,moses,henderson,gerrard and allen
    in a 433 not the outdated 442

  17. Suso has been very good in Spain this year scoring and assists, and Adorjan, has scored in his last 3 games, and is looking good.

  18. Mate, there is nothing to move on from. The problem is not that we didn't sign Eriksen. It's our transfer policy and as long as that is not right, people should definitely not move on.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Furthermore, how can Shelvey also young and English be worth only 1/3 of Hughes who has never played PL football?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I guess since my 93-year-old gran deserved a start over Lucas.

    ReplyDelete
  21. That is because Gerrard is covering for Lucas and, at the end of the day, for the fools who didn't feel we needed to bring in a DM this summer.

    ReplyDelete
  22. When people say we should've signed ERIKSEN they're talking about specific player they wanted us to sign. Not our transfer policy in general. But your right we shouldn't move on lets talk about another player all the time who's signed for our rivals:-)

    ReplyDelete
  23. No, let's talk about our transfer policy which has not done one single thing to improve our inconsistency and has, once again, seen us waste twenty million quid on less than average dross.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree with you that Liverpool is try sign a player without proper assessment but mere saying that a player has a potential to do better, that is wrong we want a player to fit in the first eleven.Mr Rodgers cannot spend such an ernomous amount of money on raw players.Mr Rodgers is commiting the same mistake done by king Kenny Daglish. He is bring rubbish to the team.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yes but for every 1 Ronaldo there is 10 Spearing's so what's your point?

    ReplyDelete
  26. LIVERPOOL waste more money in the transfer market.Shock horror! You've covered it.I agree with you.Not much else to say really.

  27. look who he follows on twitter, im sure you'll have something to say about it. a few people told me he follows some nasty far right group leader. A new figure of hate in the ranks for when luis leaves perhaps JK?

  28. Ross Barkley would be a good signing send joe allen the other way with aspas the spanish billy sharp and why havn't we signed momo diame cos he was on a free when kenny was signing him just think if kenny was in charge we would be in the european cup now and 19-19 with the mancs

    ReplyDelete
  29. At most he should be worth only 5 to 6 million pounds.
