Debunking LFC Myths: No 13 - £12m Christian Eriksen did not want to join Liverpool

Over the last year, many Reds fans - myself included - repeatedly argued that Liverpool should pull out all the stops to sign midfield maestro Christian Eriksen. Alas, due to LFC's trademark lethargy in the transfer market, the Dane ended up signing for Spurs; and to add insult to injury, he cost a comparatively meagre £12m, a fee that was/is eminently affordable. Since the deal, the prevailing view amongst LFC fans seems to be that Eriksen 'didn't want to join Liverpool', and I've lost count of the number of times I've heard that over the last month. Well, that unbacked contention is total nonsense and the latest in a long-line of spurious LFC-related myths.

Eriksen DID want to join Liverpool, and here is the persuasive evidence to support that contention:

May 2013: Former Ajax and LFC star Ryan Babel tweeted the following:

"I am convincing [Christian] Eriksen to join Liverpool. He asked me about the club and I hope he joins"

May 2013: In an interview with Danish newspaper Sporten.dk, Eriksen made explicitly clear his interest in signing for Liverpool:

"Dortmund is one of the options but it is not the only option. Liverpool is definitely an option. It is also one of the clubs that is a step-up from Ajax, and it's a different league and a different caliber. It sounds very exciting, but we'll have to see. I don't know if there is anything specific, but I've even talked to Daniel [Agger] about it".

July 2013: Babel reiterates that he is trying to convince Eriksen to join the Reds:

"For the LFC fans who have questions about Eriksen, I've gave [sic] him enough information about the club during past season, so he understands LFC. In my opinion, it's LFC who have to make the real effort to get him, then I'm confident for a good ending".

What exactly does 'Liverpool is definitely an option' mean? It quite obviously means that Liverpool WERE one of the clubs in which Eriksen held an interest (!). It seems ridiculous to even explain that, but so many Reds fans continue to spout the totally inaccurate view that Eriksen 'didn't want to join Liverpool'.

Additionally, why would he talk to Daniel Agger and Ryan Babel about the club if he wasn't interested? Why would he say that LFC's interest is 'very exciting'? Is that normal behaviour for players who don't want to join a particular club? Based on the available evidence, the following scenario seems likely:

* Eriksen was interested in joining LFC, so he took steps to find out about the club from people who actually know, i.e. Agger and Babel, to players with whom he has a connection (Denmark and Ajax).

* He waited for LFC to make a serious move, but that didn't happen. Instead, Spurs aggressively pursued Eriksen, and made it clear they really wanted him.

* As is human nature, Eriksen signed for the club that showed it genuinely valued his talent, and made him feel wanted. Indeed, Eriksen himself confirmed this earlier in September. He told Danish newspaper BT:

"There were not that many clubs to choose from in the end and no-one were closer than Tottenham. There were a lot of rumours, but I only felt right about the approach from Tottenham. The club followed me for a long time and really showed intent.”

Quite why Rodgers wouldn't want Eriksen is anyone's guess. With his superb technique, skill, awareness, creativity, and confidence on the ball, he'd be perfect for Liverpool's system, and if LFC had signed him, Coutinho's absence wouldn't be such a major problem right now.

Ultimately, Eriksen DID want to join Liverpool, but the Reds didn't show the requisite 'intent', which is why the club lost out. It's that simple.

  1. I am a Spurs fan and I think you need to let go of this now. It is like retracing the steps and interactions you had with a beautiful girl who inevitably chose to go out with the better looking guy. Nothing you can do in hindsight. Don't look back in anger.

  2. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll see him score the winning goal at Anfield soon.

  3. I'm a Spurs fan and got to say that is spot on - I'm sure if you put a bid in for him and shown intent he would've ended up at Liverpool - Liverpool are still very highly regarded worldwide and even without european football can attract a decent level of player just because you are Liverpool - wishing the best fans in the country a good season (but hopefully below us :))

    ReplyDelete
  4. Or perhaps Liverpool didn't need him as they had Coutinho!!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Of course he wanted to join Liverpool, there were a whole host of clubs he would have joined whom he thought offered career progression for him, why would it be otherwise. What it doesn't say is whether once Spurs were in for him he'd have still wanted to join Liverpool or whether as with Willian, Gylfi, and Dempsey, Spurs were simply the more attractive option.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Well that worked out great for us then didn't it. But of course we needed Aspas in spite of having Coutinho..

    ReplyDelete
  7. Rodgers didn't want to sign him because he needed to buy more players to support the "work in progress" rubbish that is keeping him in a job. I'm more and more starting to feel like this season's Jason Carr by the week because I honest to God think that we will not get one single thing out of this current policy and I also think FSG as well as Rodgers are too pig headed to let go of it and use the only one approach that does work.

  8. He only called us an option, nowhere did he say he wanted join us.

“Manchester City really wanted to sign me last summer but it didn’t feel right. I didn’t want to go to a club just to stay on the bench."

These were Eriksens most recent comments so if he refused to join City because of not being offered first team football then he would have refused to come to LFC as he was not going to be guaranteed first team football at Anfield either.

  9. The arguement we didnt need him is clearly disproved now with Coutihno out. We didnt know he would get injured, but should be prepared for that eventuality. Two players for every position was the mantra being spouted all summer.
Now we have no right back, no left back(apparently), no creative att mid.
On the plus side we have got 6 CBs who can play anywhere seemingly...
Sarcasm aside, definate transfer failure on Eriksen, Wanyama too, and how nobody but Soton picked up on Lovren i dont know. Not just saying that because he scored, he has looked like a beast from day one.
From what i seen in Sahko for the Swans match, and when he was moved to CB v Soton, I'm a bit skeptical.

  10. Eriksen rejected Man City because he was not willing to sit on the bench. What makes you think he would be willing to play second fiddle to Coutinho?

  11. why join Little Pool when you can join a Big Club like Tottenham? pool fans, you really need to check in with reality from time to time... Eriksen to Pool??? GUFFAW HAHA LOL

  12. Pointless article. He was clearly MORE interested in another club. End of....move on!

    ReplyDelete
  13. i think you mean a BIGGER club

    ReplyDelete
  14. Stepping stone to Barcelona or Madrid is more like it. Nobody else was willing to offer Eriksen first team football!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think we will be resting players at Unfield when we play Lidl-pool, we can send out the reserves and still batter them. That's how good Spurs are and how shit pool are... FACT.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Possibly but Levy will probably extract at least 5 times what we paid for him!

    ReplyDelete
  17. you are an embarrassment to Spurs fans.. fcuk off u cnut

    ReplyDelete
  18. I dont think he would have played second fiddle. I think he would have had as much chance of playing as Coutihno if he was working well in training.
There is always competition for places at any club. Difference with City is he would be against 3 other players, liverpool and spurs 1 player. So he chose spurs over us for some other reason than guarenteed playing time IMO

    ReplyDelete
  19. Even if he had the choice, joining Spurs makes more sense. They could challenge for the title if their players gel.
They've got a solid defence, a tactically agile manager and probably the best range of attacking options of anyone in the league (Chelsea's lack of strikers precludes them- so it is between City and Spurs in this regard).
I don't expect them to win the title or even take it right down to the wire, but Daniel Levy has done an incredible job with Spurs and it seems that they're about to go to the next level.
God forbid they sort their stadium out...

    ReplyDelete
  20. Good shout. What a bell end!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Nobody really knows except Eriksen. Yes Liverpool could've done with him now Coutinho is injured but I don't buy all this "he went elsewhere because we couldn't offer regular 1st team football" talk. What people really want to say is "we're the bigger club, blah blah" bo11ox but are just dressing it up.

All players know that it's now a squad game and that nobody is guaranteed to play every week.
Maybe he just went to the club he wanted to go to

  22. Have a cry go have big a cry.didnt liverpool win 3 2 last time they met LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Eriksen would have demanded guaranteed first team football!!!

If he did not get acknowledgment from City then what makes you think he would have got acknowledgment from LFC?

Does Rodgers also want Eriksen to pick the starting eleven?

    ReplyDelete
  24. So joining Liverpool was an option then and he decided not to, well why would he, he wants to win things and whilst we are not there yet, Liverpool are at least a year behind us in their development.

Liverpool are improving, they are closing the gap but they have the problem of why would you go there without Champions league football. Spurs have been knocking on the door and have sold a vision, obviously told players who they are going to sign. Liverpool can't yet do that so don't have the pull they used to have.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Well done for becoming a selling club.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Who cares about your sour grapes. He didn't join the bindippers did he? He joined the eminently greater Spurs, situated in the infinitely better part of the country.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Haha dont know where you're getting that starting eleven comment from in anything I've said here.
And do you honestly think "Guarenteed 1st team football" is given to any player signing to a top level club? Is it written into his contract? Or was it just a pinkie promise between him and AVB?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Eriksen is definitely a quality player. I think Rodger's problem with him was his work-rate off the ball, which from what I have seen is not great. Spurs can accept this as they play with two physical defensive/ holding midfielders, so they can accept him being a bit of a liability from a defensive standpoint. Liverpool don't have that luxury, and our game plan requires our attackers to play a high intensity pressing game, which is not suited to Eriksen. That's why Mkhitaryan was such a big miss for us. He's doing great for Dortmund; that's the painful loss, not Eriksen.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 99% of clubs are selling clubs but we have bought a hell of a lot more quality than we have sold this year, thanks to Bale/Levy.

    ReplyDelete
  30. 20 years old and he rejected City because they were not willing to meet his demands?

Now you know why he did not join LFC.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Good luck to Spurs if they do not qualify for the CL.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks you for your concern, very kind, but you should be more concerned about yourselves.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Do you ever tire of seemingly making things up? Eriksen rejected City *last summer* not this summer, as he confirmed himself:

"Last summer, City really wanted to sign me, but it didn’t feel right. Maybe I wouldn’t have played there – I wouldn’t go to a club just to stay on the subs’ bench"

Given his age at the time, and City's mass of big money stars, it's obvious he would've been on the bench, so he decided to to go. It had nothing to do with his 'demands'.

LFC is different. Eriksen would've had infinitely more chance of playing regularly, even with Coutinho fit.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Spot on, Mkhitaryan is such a great talent. Pity LFC could not offer CL football as that is what made the difference.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Please - Just to clarify. Is there a Spurs fan and Liverpool fan both called Yobbo or is one person arguing with himself?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yes, just ignore everything else about him being excited about LFC's interest; speaking to Agger/Babel about the move.

You continually twist the facts. Eriksen - in his own words - said he wouldn't go to City to sit on the subs bench. It has nothing to do with being 'guaranteed' first team football. Given LFC's situation, it is highly probable Eriksen would've played often for LFC, who are not City, and are not oversubscribed with attacking players.

Additionally, LFC spent the summer trying to sign players who play in Eriksen's position, so the club actively wanted a player like him, which suggests he would've played.

    ReplyDelete
  37. We will be able to keep our squad together (bar Suarez) should anything drastic happen whereas Spurs would have many unhappy expensive players should you not qualify for the CL and that is a recipe for disaster.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thanks for you reply. Sorry for the morons who attacked your comment (now banned)

    ReplyDelete
  39. I am not twisting the facts, I am giving my opinion just like you are giving yours.

Do you honestly think Eriksen would have been willing to sit on the bench at Man City?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Where did I say that? He rejected City because there was a strong likelihood of him spending the season on the bench, and if you look at Rodwell/Sinclair, Eriksen got it spot on.

There is no comparison between LFC and Man City. If Eriksen signed this summer, he would be playing regularly, even with Coutinho in the squad, and the competition between them would push them both to greater heights.

Eriksen and Coutinho can be accommodated in the same team anyway. Yes, Coutinho can play centrally, but he can also play from the left, and he got 3 goals and 6 assists last season in that role.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Bold statement. All footballers who are any good will at some stage want to leave for a CL club wherever they are now. LFC are no different unless its the case that your players aren't good enough to join a CL club.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I beg to differ. Eriksen was number one at Ajax so he would need to be number one at his next club which he is at Spurs.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Barnabas Chinatu Jaka3:37 pm, September 24, 2013

I really believed we've gotten Eriksen at Liverrpool, until i heared he'd joined Spurs, Truth is LIverpool never showed real serious interest, only speculations, what of Willian, Soldado, Wanyama, Dempsey etc, Now we are in need of options. There is absolutelythe need for a change of approach. Now it is Xavi Alonso next is oh! He'd joined Juventus.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Rodgers has already said that he wants Coutinho for the number 10 role so i struggle to see where Eriksen would have fit in and be guaranteed first team football in the process.

    ReplyDelete
  45. That is just your opinion, not fact.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Why are you guys still crying about this? He joined Tottenham, get over it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Rodgers also constantly stresses the importance of players being flexible and playing in different positions. Why do you keep going on about 'guaranteed first team football' - that's just something you've invented. He didn't want to sit on the bench at City, but that doesn't mean he'd make demands to play every game, like you suggest. Like most players, he just wants to play, and he'll go to a team where that's likely to happen.

Given the club's current attacking options, it's highly probable that he would've played regularly at LFC, and having two players who can effectively play the No. 10 position would'v been a massive bonus, not a negative. Like now, for instance, when Coutinho is injured.

Also, Coutinho has not scored/created in the league this season, and Eriksen would've been around to pick up the slack.

    ReplyDelete
  48. There is little point in arguiing over it - the fact is spurs over the last couple of years have nicked several players from underneath our noses. either we didnt want them, didnt want to pay x amount or we simply werent interested.

This building for the future lark only sounds good when your present is worthwhile. Players like aspas and alberto are not going to do anything this season - perhaps BR felt he could pull another michu! But its very rare you can pick a diamond like that for a couple of million.

From the little i have seen of him - he is a very good player. AVB has a lot to prove especially to chelskea fans and perhaps even liverpool as we turned him down to - and what better way than to challenge for the league in just under a year.

With several clubs having new managers - now was the time to show ambition and go for the title - but we're hell bent on aiming for top 4 and getting 6th!

BR for some odd reason spent much of our budget on defense when i think toure was enough - especially now skirtel looks to be back in the fold. 25 million on 2 centre backs seem's a bit over the top considering we didnt have a bad defensive record anyway!

Id like to see us go for someone like michu before utd or arsenal snap him up.

  49. Spurs fan here, firstly I'd like to apologise for all the 'cocky' spurs fans on here. Clearly they haven't learnt to wait till we actually win something before we start acting arrogant like the other top teams, lets face it something always blows up in our face come the end of the season. Secondly, Liverpool fans please let the Eriksen issue go he's gone, fact is nobody showed any real interest in Eriksen and he said that when he came to WHL. Even we didn't have any interest in him until we lost out to Chelski with Willian which at the moment is looking like a blessing. I like Liverpool and so do a lot of my Spurs mates and wish you lot the best of luck in getting back into the Champs League, enjoyed watching their european nights.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Henderson and Allen have played in the number 10 role, even Aspas has.

Each and every attacking player Rodgers has signed can play in 2-3 different positions?

    ReplyDelete
  51. You've just repeated what I said in my previous comment. What's your point?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Where I agree in part, it doesn't state that he "DID" want to join Liverpool.. You were clearly an option that he showed an interest in finding out more about.. He several options at one point which then dwindled away when it got the business end of the TW.. at which he would be choosing the club the he "DID" want to join and that was spurs.. A number of factors including talks with Baldini and Levy would have changed his mindset along this process.

I think L'pool will see an upturn in fortune this season though other clubs have strengthened well.. its going to be a long haul with no guarantees

    ReplyDelete
  53. Is Eriksen that versatile?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Also, If Dortmund was an option then why did he not join them? The had CL on offer?

    ReplyDelete
  55. aspas is rubbish gives away far too many freekicks and cant even score or kick aball he just likes taking players out

    ReplyDelete
  56. Soldado has actually not been all that impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  57. An own goal perhaps? :D

    ReplyDelete
  58. Bottom line is that Eriksen went where he felt comfortable. He asked Babel, he asked Vertonghen, he looked at both clubs, plus others abroad. He's gotta keep his options open. He's a Tottenham player, get over it.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Don't know what to say sigh... I really hope Stevie form is gonna get better apart from dead balls he is not contributing enough. If he doesn't do more our midfield is in trouble and Suarez has to do more.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Did Eriksen have an interest in Liverpool? Seems evident enough that he did.

Did Liverpool have as strong an interest in Eriksen? Seems evident enough that we didn't.

Why is that seen as "lethargic"? The club made a decision that they didn't want the player badly enough.

Plus, it's not like Spurs scooped him up right away. They waited until the end of the window to get him.

Would he have been a nice addition to the team? Yes, I believe so, and I would have liked to have gotten him.

But I'd also go so far as to say that I trust the club to make the right decision on who to go after and who not to go after. We've signed players for the here and now (Sakho, Mignolet, Sturridge, and Coutinho). And we've signed players for the future (Alberto, Ilori, etc.)

    ReplyDelete
  61. its all irrelevant anyway spurs have him we dont...if im honest im envious of spurs squad they have a variety of different players to mix it up while we are pigeon holed with a certain type of player

    ReplyDelete
  62. I was being sarcastic...

    ReplyDelete
  63. Tells us which of their players you would want in the LFC squad.

    ReplyDelete
  64. A few points

    - just because a player says something doesn't mean that is fact. They are repeatedly trying to maximise value, wages and trying to save face

    - Eriksen does look really good but why was no one of real weight interested in him? Surely if all is well with him, someone woulda signed him. Is there some demons in his closet?

    - let's not slate Coutinho too much. Surely his stepover for Sturridge's goal is an assist for all intents and purposes?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Mike - Kovacic has barely played this season (coming back from injury) so dont worry about the goals and assists so far.Fact is Coutinho was not good enough to get a game for Inter so they cut their losses. As for Bergkamp that was 20 years ago(almost as long as last time LFC won a league title) so lets move on from that.

    ReplyDelete
  66. "He's only a year older than PC, so we'll see " Coutinho is 21 - Kovavcic is 19 matey do some research....

    ReplyDelete
  67. aside from erikson..i rate dembele, lennon ( when fit ) vertongon ( i think thats how you spell it ) paulinho

    ReplyDelete
  68. I agree in that Spurs have more depth.

But assuming that both squads are fully fit, I think our Starting XI is better than theirs. They have only a few players that I'd take over our players in their respective starting positions.

Lennon is the one that stands out most to me because he could be a terror for us out wide.

    ReplyDelete
  69. It is an assist in my book..

    ReplyDelete
  70. Even if we play them with our best 11 and win both times, team with more depth will probably end up in cl spot.. But, it could be both of our teams...

    ReplyDelete
  71. I agree with all your comments, and as AK suggested, there needs to be more movement off the ball. That will happen when Suarez is back.

    ReplyDelete
  72. statistics dont reveal things such as how we lost 6points in 2games almost solely for his absence

    ReplyDelete
  73. As much as what I have seen so far on Aspas he needs time to settle down. So too Alberto.I would like to see more of this young lad in action.

    ReplyDelete
  74. It certainly feels that we had a legit shot at Eriksen and just didn't show enough conviction and interest soon enough. I think doing that with Him and Lomela just screams that LFC were uncommitted or unconvinced of these guys' worth. Either one of these guys would have been a great fit given their early days in the league. Given our ponderous pace at lack of attacking will and skill, this indecision could turn out to be a poor choice. Too late now; lets hope there are other skilled offensive guys out there.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I know, but I'd pick him over Eto'o (at his current level of fitness, at least), Torres and Ba.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Totally agreed. And the answer seems very much to be that the club were not interested. I think we had better targets. We clearly had money to spend and were clearly interested in attacking midfielders but at no point made a serious move for Eriksen. He was available from day one and we never made the move. Interesting to me is also that Spurs didn't make their move until late in the window. I guess the player is just not as highly rated as some people seem to think.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Yeah, agree. If we had everyone of our players fit then our starting eleven would be better.

    ReplyDelete
  78. tbh, we've long had a higher wage bill than Spurs and the new TV deal will cover their expenditure even if they do fail anyway.
They don't have any crazy earners, and they have plenty of saleable assets, so they'll be fine regardless.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Spurs have just signed Capoue & Paulinho, who play in the same position as Sandro & Dembele - all 4, when fit, were first team players for club and country last season. Just saying...

    ReplyDelete
  80. Any decent player can play in any position on the pitch - how effective they are in those roles is another matter entirely (and for me, just because Henderson and Aspas have featured in the No. 10 role doesn't prove that they are suited to the role)

    ReplyDelete
  81. I've no qualms in Rodgers/LFC deciding against prioritising Eriksen, if they felt he didn't fit in with the squad.

I do have an issue though with sending Suso away on loan, to pick up another reserve player of the same ilk that is one year older than him, and one year younger than Eriksen (but infinitely less proven/experienced) for a significant fee.

People can talk about ~£8m transfer fees being negligible, but these fees quickly add up, and the opportunity cost is that they then mean that we miss out on legitimate bargains that constantly appear on the market (such as Eriksen this year)

    ReplyDelete
  82. The quotes show that there must have been some preliminary discussion between representatives or those acting in between as there seems to be no other reason Erikson would be asking about Liverpool randomly. I am not going to believe that Ryan Babble had any idea of what Liverpool were and were not doing in this scenario. There is abssolutley no proof from these quotes that Erikson had decided against Liverpool at all.

Jaimie the quote "Liverpool are definitely and option" seems less like we were a club that Erikson was interested in and more that we were a club that were interested in him. If we were not interested how could WE be an option? If Erikson is so arrogant to assume he can go to any club he picks out of thin air then why not say Barca? Or Bayern? If you rread more about what he and hs agent had said they were much more interested in Dortmund, then AC and his agent saying that the preference was for a CL club. We were not the only club that were discussed but we were one of the earlier ones. The fact that he stopped talking about us and paid more attention to others suggests that either we walked away for some unknown reason or he made up his mind that HE was not interested. There is nothing proved here at all.

Sorry I think that you have read in to theses quotes more than they suggest. Mate I think you have started with a hypothesis and tried to prove it rather than just reading the text and deciding what it means.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Yeah so there was interest and he found it exciting. Yet he never joined. What happened to the interest? Then there are the quotes I put up above about clubs in CL that he was interested in.

What I heard (and only rumours) was that we were interested and made that known. He found out and was interested. The Ajax couch told him he should look for a team that are doing better than we currently are whilst his agent was speaking to CL clubs around Europe. He thought the Dortmund thing would happen but they went for Mhk. He was interested in AC but they were more interested in Honda. There was Leverkusen but he decided against it. I heard the same happened with us too. We were interested but he decided elsewhere would be better.

I do agree we should have done much more than what it seemed we did. If we had of made him feel really wanted we may have won the battle but he would have come more expensive in both value and wages I presume.

Having said that I don't think that the article debunks they rumour that he turned us down, but there is also no proof that I have seen that he did either.

    ReplyDelete
  84. It doesn't matter what you 'heard' - what matters are the verifiable facts, and according to the player himself:

    * He was definitely interested in joining LFC. If LFC is an 'option' that means it's an option to join.

    * He was excited by LFC's interest.

    * He asked Daniel Agger about the club.

    * He spoke with Ryan Babel about the club.

LFC fans are going around saying that Eriksen didn't want to join Liverpool. There is no persuasive evidence to support that. There is, however, persuasive evidence to suggest that Eriksen DID want to join LFC.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Just did a bit of reading on it then different sources. It generally looks like we were interested but dragged our heels for ages and eventually just lost interest for some stupid and unknown reason.

I was not saying he was not interested at all but that his interest may have wained. He was clearly more interested in Dortmund than us.

We will never know if we could have got him or not but we agree we should have tried.

    ReplyDelete
  86. 'Interesting to me is also that Spurs didn't make their move until late in the window'

One of the possible reasons could be that they were waiting on the Bale move to happen before pulling the trigger on some targets. They did buy players before Bale left but maybe some targets had to wait till they sold Bale. Another possible reason is that they wanted Willian and that obviously fell through, so Eriksen was maybe a cheaper back up option.

Always hard to look from the outside in, with football. Sometimes we even have to take what comes from the horse's mouth with a pinch of salt!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Hi Logan,

Spurs have more players than lfc have that will challenge him for first team ceteris paribus. Why would he choose spurs over lfc ?

  88. I agree; no myths have been proven or disproven, save the fact that we are all guessing the real reasons based on limited evidence.
JK is right in that there is SOME evidence of interest from CE, whether that interest was sufficient to mean that we definitely or even probably would have signed him is a matter of opinion only.
In the end , there is insufficient data for a meaningful answer, to quote Issaac Asimov (a science fiction writer).
What we are left with is a definite feeling that others are more assertive and direct when transfers are in the balance- And that has to change, or there will be more Mhkitaryans and Willians etc etc.
Erksen has done very well so far- he hasn't proved himself yet, and maybe Coutinho will prove the better player, maybe not.
But, save for the point about being more decisive in the future, I see no benefit from dwelling on what might have been. We are like this till at least January. It doesn't matter if Erikson is the new Messi; he plays for Spurs now. Get over it.

  89. Suarez told him not too sign for this sinking ship and instead said go too North London and we can be best of rivals come January. when i upgrade from the Daniel Sturridge inspired (Me neither) L.F.C, And go too the Ozil perfection machine that is 'The Arsenal' we will have a ball not, oop north it is sheizen oop there. And he wanted too go too Arsenal Babel said it was a mare in L.F.C so did Agger i doubt they would say go too Liverpool i highly doubt it L.F.C You lot are bonkers lololololololololololololololololololololololololol Long live Brenda lolololololololololololololololololololololololololo with your Gypo kit's
