Transfer Boost: LFC to seal fantastic €22m deal over the weekend. Good choice...?

With Sebastian Coates, Kolo Toure and Aly Cissokho all injured, Liverpool are in the defensive doghouse right now, but with only two three days left of the current transfer window, new reports suggest that much-needed reinforcements are (thankfully) imminent.

According to the BBC today, Liverpool will sign PSG's Mamadou Sakho and Sporting Lisbon's Tiago Ilori 'in the next 48 hours'. The report states:

"Liverpool are in talks with both clubs and hope to reach an agreement on the respective deals over the weekend.

"Sakho and Ilori are expected on Merseyside for medicals and further talks in the next 24 hours"

Earlier this week, I argued that the ideal situation would be for Liverpool to sign TWO central defenders, and it appears that Rodgers plans to do exactly that, which is a great boost to the club's overall defensive options.

Liverpool have chased Sakho and Ilori for several months now. In May, Sporting rejected a €5m bid for Ilori, and a month later, Portuguese newspaper Ojogo claimed that the Reds increased their bid to €7m, with €800,000 in performance-related bonuses.

Following on from that, Liverpool were reportedly 'represented' at Sporting's recent 5-1 home win over Arouca, after which further transfer talks took place between the two clubs.

As for €15m-rated Sakho - When asked in July about the possibility of a move to Anfield Sakho told reporters:

"I am flattered by the interest of historic clubs like Liverpool and AC Milan. We will see what happens in the near future.”

Soon after this, Liverpool allegedly made a €10m-bid for Sakho, though it appears that PSG are holding out for a higher fee.

I'd personally be very satisfied with these two signings, especially Sakho, who is exactly the type of strong, quick, mobile defender needed at the club. Ilori is also (arguably) preferable to Kyriakos Papadopolous, who will take time to get back into the swing of things after his massive injury problems.

To be honest, the club's defensive situation should've been sorted out months ago. Rodgers knew about Carra's retirement last summer, which means he's had an entire year to identify targets. The fact that the club is still struggling to sign new defenders with three days of the transfer window left is indicative (IMO) of poor transfer planning.

Despite the reports, whether Liverpool can actually close these deals remains to be see. After seeing several seemingly cast-iron targets slip away over the summer, nothing is a foregone conclusion, and there's every possibility that some last minute 'hiccups' may occur, just as they did with the likes of Diego Costa and Willian.

For example: Sakho and Ilori are free agents next summer, which probably means Liverpool will use this as a bargaining chip and go in with lower than expected offers. If the club takes this route then both transfers are destined to fail, but hopefully that won't happen.

Still, all's well that ends well, and if the club can pull of these two signings without being gazumped by Spurs, I'm sure Liverpool fans will be happy ;-)

  2. Great news if true?????.............. :-)

  3. Agreed, terrific signings if they go ahead. Best window since the last one!

  4. Sakho can play LB? Well thats good to hear. Nevertheless; probably should have got them sooner. Doesnt matter anyway, you know they'll be putting Spurs Jerseys on come Sunday haha lets nail these signings now and go out and get a winger.

  5. Yes they look good, and again in the right age group to progress further. Wonder if there is any truth in the Yaromolenko rumours. ??

  6. Sakho is just what we need but sky are reporting the fee is £19m!!

Nice liverpool jus bring in Y
armolenko an top 4 here we come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Fantastic news. Can't wait until it's finalised.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Seing there aren't many top wingers available now, getting in two good CB's is good enough. At least if they sign, the club aren't risking whatever chance of getting top 4 by lack of centreback cover.

  10. I find the fee difficult to believe for a player with one year left on his contract....FSG wouldnt sanction that in a million years

    ReplyDelete
  11. of all the defenders we are linked with sako was the one wanted most due to his athleticism....we really do need another 2 cb so i hope the deal comes off in time for utd ...

    ReplyDelete
  12. Believe it when I see it - my guess we get the cheapest

    ReplyDelete
  13. FSG will not sanction both

    ReplyDelete
  14. Stingy aren't they?????

    ReplyDelete
  15. liverpool4life5658:55 pm, August 30, 2013

Yes they will. We are close to both.

    ReplyDelete
  16. That cannot be true....if we pay that much for him, it's the worst deal since Downing...

    ReplyDelete
  17. The BBC reports €15m (£13m). £19.6m is a rip-off, and the club should not pay that (IMO)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Great news if all goes thru without a hitch (or hijack). Sakho is class. Get in!

Last time I heard we bid near 20 million for him, haven't heard anything since, but we are definitely interested in him, I think his first choice and Moses is back up plan...

    ReplyDelete
  20. I read today that Llori is injured until the middle of september...so what's the point really? What a terrible waste of money that should go towards Yaromolenko

    ReplyDelete
  21. liverpool4life5658:57 pm, August 30, 2013

    Where did you read that?

    ReplyDelete
  22. 19.6 and 8 for two players both in the last year of their contracts is really steep. I don't care tho, its not my money and we need to guarantee CL this year.

  23. "He is not as technically gifted as some defenders but he is really, really tough," said Dupuis. "He's a beast and some forwards have admitted to being afraid of him in the past.

"Sometimes he makes mistakes but he's young. I think he could have a good future at Liverpool.

"The fee might seem a little bit high but he's a real player. Physically, he is very impressive."

Sakho was born and raised in Paris and has won 14 caps for the French national team

  26. FSG's hand has been forced somewhat due to our injury list and the fact that the transfer window is winding down. Whilst many believe that FSG should continue their financial prudence, I believe sometimes you have to push the boat out. We've been overcompensating for far too long after the travesties that were Carroll and Downing.

I can't possibly see how these 2 players, with their attributes, would be bad for business. Their acquisition, especially that of Sakho, would go some way to letting the football world (and Suarez) know that we can still attract top talent. We've got to consider that Barca could still come calling for Agger at some point in the future - Sakho would be a more than able replacement. Here's hoping...

    ReplyDelete
  27. You should care because it means we won't get the attacker we need. Why is it that when we need to get rid of a player we lose 15 or 20 million on him and when another club needs to and there are no takes, we still pay 20 million. For a very average, cluts of a player.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think on some German based transfer website...I'll have a look

    ReplyDelete
  29. Even if so by the time he's signed it'd be just two weeks...so you bin off a talent for a two week wait? Can't see Yarmolenko as much as I'd love it...the number's don't seem to add up even without Ilori if Sakho is £13 million plus and Andriy is £19 million plus...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yeah...i kind of admire it in one way and totally hate it in every other way :) Still, Coutinho proves there are bargains out there so maybe its not the end of the world if they stand their ground and refuse to get ripped off.

    ReplyDelete
  31. liverpool4life5659:05 pm, August 30, 2013

How do you know we won't get a attacker? Have you been in the board room? Oh guess not... :) how are sahko and IIori "average"? Both excellent talents.

    ReplyDelete
  32. sorry mate I posted the link but it's "awaiting moderation"

what an annoying feature that is..

    ReplyDelete
  33. liverpool4life5659:07 pm, August 30, 2013

    Okay mate:)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I was talking about Sakho. He is average because he's tall and strong and that's all there is too him. He's kind of like Peter Crouch and Emile Heskey had a lovechild and taught him how to defend.

    ReplyDelete
  35. That's what I said - big and strong and nothing else to him. But he is big and strong. The fast strikers in the league are going to run circles around him

    ReplyDelete
  36. if and its a big if, we do sign these players we will still be in profit from this windows dealings, i thought we had 20 mill to spend this year. very true what you say about us never making profits and always paying over the odds lately. someone is to blame, feel like we need a levy in charge.

    ReplyDelete
  37. liverpool4life5659:10 pm, August 30, 2013

That's what we need a defender who won't get pushed around, mate trust me he will be a good buy, maybe alittle steep in the cost but will defiantly improve us.

    ReplyDelete
  38. do you know if sakho is a lefty, that could be a problem with him and agger, unless he is going to be a left back with llori being in the center with agger???

    ReplyDelete
  39. liverpool4life5659:15 pm, August 30, 2013

Yeah he a LCB and left footed but he has played RCB too. I don't see the problem in that carra played LCB and he was right footed

    ReplyDelete
  40. Jamie i thought you said you would be gone till sep 1st? you just cant leave us can you?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Google: tiago llori transfermarkt.de - click the first link and in the middle of the page it says injury history

    ReplyDelete
  42. liverpool4life5659:15 pm, August 30, 2013

Mamadou Sakho: 27 apps, 1148 passes complete (92% accuracy) 70% tackles won, 76% headed duels won (84/110),169 clearances, 44 interceptions.

    ReplyDelete
  43. No they won't he is very quick as is llori!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Many keep on mentioning Levy as being a shrewd negotiator. Aren't Spurs now paying over the odds for players? He was willing to pay £30M for Willian, we weren't. As much as I wanted Willian to join us (irrespective of cost), I know he's not worth that much. Is Erik Lamela worth £30M? Levy's done well with Bale's fee, but if Real Madrid are stupid enough to be held to ransom, that's up to them.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Can I just ask why you describe him as a clutz of a player? What evidence do you have of that?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Lies, damn lies and statistics :-)

    ReplyDelete
  47. As noted by some, some of those stats are far superior to some of our defenders last term.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Just wait till he's played two games and you'll see for yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Sakho is the future capt of france, say the French journalists.............the story is all over their media right now!!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. He plays in Agger's position, but can also operate as a left back

    ReplyDelete
  51. liverpool4life5659:19 pm, August 30, 2013

I was just about to say the same thing, was better that all our CBs last year

    ReplyDelete
  52. liverpool4life5659:19 pm, August 30, 2013

His stats are better than all our CBs...

    ReplyDelete
  53. liverpool4life5659:20 pm, August 30, 2013

    Same mate :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Which means he has leadership qualities as well. Priceless!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Im happy with these signings, but this is business which should have been done earlier this summer. We saw how Skrtel struggled with Rogers defensive ideas last year (moving to the flank when in attacking possession to all the full back to overlap the wide men) esp. in the City game where he set up the Tevez goal. Theses players needed a pre-season to embed in the squad like Mignolet and Toure have. It could cost us points, points which could spell the difference between 4th and 6th. It will be that tight in that area this year!

    ReplyDelete
  56. yea man, until last year i though levy was a joker, with his waiting games, but i think he has played this bale saga very well. making sure he has done all his dealing first. Spurs look very strong but they have so many players it may take them a while to settle.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Apparently, Ilori was quicker than both Christiano Ronaldo and Nani in speed test conducted at Sporting's Academy.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Raised by the club’s sometimes sieve-like youth academy since 2002, ‘Kirikou’ has gone on to become one of the club’s best recent graduates, and to the PSG faithful he is the identity of the club and embodiment of its spirit and progress on the pitch. Strong, athletic and vastly intelligent with great reading of the game, his considerable height and aerial ability makes him a formidable opponent, at times akin to a brick wall. It’s just a shame that Laurent Blanc and QSI don’t seem to totally agree with their customers.
    French magazine.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I agree. I've asked the question before as to whether there is any financial advantage in waiting till the end of the window. Apparently, clubs expect to pay less. These deals, if successful, would prove the opposite. And as you say, the players wouldn't have had a chance to bed in.

    ReplyDelete
  60. As long as they taught him....

    ReplyDelete
  61. Worried about our Centre Midfield. If we get a couple of injuries it's gonna be a struggle.

    ReplyDelete
  62. IF you can afford it, it is actually quite shrewd to pay slightly over the odds as you blow other teams out, like us, and do as much as you can to achieve your goals rather than sticking rigidly to haggling for the best deal...the objective (top four) is what matters...Spurs have the money due to the bonus of the Bale cash and are putting it in the squad, Levy is very smart I'd say and their system, with it's TD, seems to be working well, fair play to them.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I agree, I think they'll struggle for a while. AVB's got a big job on his hand to get them playing well together, quickly.

Regarding buying before selling, I think we still haven't mastered that. We seem a bit short on natural wingers at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Hmmmm. Criticising LFC for not signing until the last three days of the transfer window is very naive. Clubs haggle for as long as they can and then resign themselves to finally selling. If you don't do that, then you end up with paying over the odds which is what Comolli did. I seem to recall that you're not a great fan of Comolli. Perhaps you should be a bit more realistic?

    ReplyDelete
  65. maybe we should try skirtal as a dm ...that was the position he started out in .....

    ReplyDelete
  66. Log-on to French football weekly now, the story is there!!!.

    ReplyDelete
  67. We don't have any details, don't jump to conclusions.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I agree about paying over the odds, sometimes its necessary. My point would be that its a case of once bitten, twice shy for us. That's one of the big reasons why we keep missing out, not just because players don't want to come. We continue to let the Carroll and Downing fiascos affect how we conduct our business

I have to say though, I still don't see what all the fuss is with Levy. As you say, Spurs are doing good business, but that's because they have the money. I don't see anything special in that. It's what Man City and Chelsea have been doing for years. The best part apart their work is probably that they do it quickly. However, others are smarter. Chelsea don't need Willian, they just wanted to stop Spurs from acquiring him. The story's the same with Atsu. Fancy that, buying him for peanuts and loaning him straight out!

    ReplyDelete
  69. "Earlier this week I argued liverpool need to sign two defenders" -

Aye Right, Rodgers listens to advice from a shit stiring twaat like you

    ReplyDelete
  70. maybe they are taking advantage of our injury predicament..i was worried that with kolo and cissoko getting injured it would put a premium on any defenders we are chasing

    ReplyDelete
  71. Sahko is quality, lets hope its true but the price seems way high as the were after 12 m earlier, plus if we get both I guess skirtel will be sold to Napoli ,then sign a left midfielder

    ReplyDelete
  72. if liverpool4life says they are having a medical tomorrow thats good enough for me

    ReplyDelete
  73. Nothing's 'confirmed' but there's lots of info flying around. Ilori's value is around the £7-8M mark, whilst we offered £3M earlier in the window. So waiting hasn't really paid off.

    ReplyDelete
  74. ive a feeling borini and a few others will be leaving

    ReplyDelete
  75. Most likely. Allen?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Name them, Eric. Name the fast strikers who are going to run circles around Sakho. All the ones I can think of who will show him up for a lack of mobility would cause the same problems to any defender.

Who are the most mobile and agile centre-backs around? Koscielny; Luiz; Lescott; once would have said Ferdinand, but maybe not so much any more! These aren't exactly ballerinas. They also, each of them, have a player who stops playing alongside them -- Mertesacker, Terry, Kompany: not exactly noted for their recovery pace or cartwheels.

I can see LFC with Sakho as stopper alongside rampaging Agger: with Johnson and Cissokho supplying pace and quality at full back. That looks to me one of the better back lines in the league.

    ReplyDelete
  77. agreed if you want a player go and get him..i think the longer its left the advantage goes to the selling club as inevitably players get injured etc and more clubs become interested

    ReplyDelete
  78. Aye, we are definitely suffering something of a famine after the "feast"...or the waste....but hey there's always the Suarez cash to look forward to next summer! ;-)
As to Levy, he's got the money because he's toughed it out with Real, he's a hard negotiator when it's needed and prepared to spend the money when he's got it, that's what makes him good in my eyes.

    ReplyDelete
  79. It was back in the 2010-11 season that Sakho came of age, and was an absolute rock in the heart of an unexpectedly strong PSG defence, narrowly missing out on the Young Player of the Year award to title-winning Lille’s Eden Hazard. His performances led to him being given the armband by then-coach Antoine Kombouaré, despite only being 21 at the time, shortly before the arrival of Qatar Sports investments in the french capital. His experience belies his 23 years of age though, already having three full campaigns under his belt. Few players are better in the air than Sakho and he is as powerful as he is quick on the ground, tailor-made for the hustle and bustle of the Premier League.

    ReplyDelete
  80. not a chance...if we sign two defenders i can see either skirtal or agger being sold....others to be shipped out on loan or sold borini and wisdom

    ReplyDelete
  81. he hasn't signed yet and im still 70 /30 unsure if he will

    ReplyDelete
  82. These two can be the defensive for a decade; a perfect match. Both of them all, quick (For Illori add extremely), very good ball player & Sakho is a born leader. I think, Mamadou is a bit unlucky as the arrogant Qataris decided that they need to spend E100m for the CB position despite having Sakho. He just wasted 2 great years of his budding career in quest of a stating place at PSG, where his exclusion was absolutely not for football reasons. For anyone to see Silva & Sakho could have been the best CB pairing in the world, but for the Qataris (& their Managers).

Ever since, we are struggling in set pieces & floating balls, while without Skartel, often been bullied by the likes of Benteke, Lukaku. This man Sakho is a tank, with very good speed & I haven't seen anyone better than him in air. I have read lot of good words for him (& seen him in action in past for being a regular viewer of League 1), but this link probably sums up the best

    http://frenchfootballweekly.com/2013/08/30/mamadou-sakho-the-parisian-mountain-heading-to-liverpool/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=mamadou-sakho-the-parisian-mountain-heading-to-liverpool

After a lot of disappointments, I feel BR has solved his CB issues once for all. He has 2 top quality experienced CB in Agger & Kolo, 2 potential top quality CB in early 20 (Mamadou & Kelly) & another brilliant pair in teens (Wisdom, Illori). We almost sorted the LB position (for that Sakho can cover there as well); now only need to spend for a top quality RB, to slot into the age gap between Johnson & McLoughlin. Come Jan, 12-15m from selling Skartel & off-loading Coates, we can reinvest the amount in Brazil, Italy, Spain or France; can get a world class RB.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Cheeky grin after the Suarez comment! I feel he might even go in the winter window if we're not challenging. Might be tempted to stay till the summer if we get these 2 defenders in plus a quality attacker.

    ReplyDelete
  84. i see spurs have signed erikson if they click they could be a big force in the prem

    ReplyDelete
  85. Strange how they would over pay for 2 defenders and not for attackers! I thought they would never over pay again?

    ReplyDelete
  86. Quite ridiculous that we've been seeing a figure of £15M all summer, and Spurs get him for £11.5M. As others have said, it does seem that as soon as Liverpool approach a deal, a premium is automatically levied.

    ReplyDelete
  87. heard allen and borini have been offered to villa in exchange for shay given ,but villa are demandig cash as well

    ReplyDelete
  88. They also say his development has stalled in the last year, perhaps from too much praise and that has caused him to lose some motivation. I'm still a fan if we complete the signing for him but I'm most excited about Llori as the speed he posses could help him become an elite CB. Seriously, the guy beat Ronaldo's sprint record in their youth academy so you know he can fly.

    ReplyDelete
  89. You have no idea of what you are saying for Sakho. He can be better than Lillian Thuram & I am watching football for 30 odd years now. We are really lucky if we can get him for around £15-16m, a potential 10 years investment. He is leaving PSG for anything but football reason. Had he been English would have priced £35mn (you know why £35m) & he is better, lot better than Heskey, playing at CF or Winger.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Really !! Never knew that ,can't imagine him being any good there to be honest ,he's had one good season off him ,we should of taken the 20m of man city last year

    ReplyDelete
  91. either that or we have shit negotiators.....spurs are sitting on the potential bale money and other clubs know this so we have no excuse

    ReplyDelete
  92. Llori was the defender I've wanted all along. Even though he may not make a huge impact right away given his age and size (seems a bit skinny for a CB in the Prem) he could develop into a world class defender and the perfect CB for Rogers' system.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Although I think he would have helped us I think if we can get a true winger to allow Coutinho into the middle we'll be just as well off.

    ReplyDelete
  94. ive changed my mind on that i dont think a midfield of tino Gerrard and Lucas would work long term ...i think we would leek goals from midfield

    ReplyDelete
  95. Believe it when i see it.

    ReplyDelete
  96. same here i wouldnt be surprised if we sign no one

    ReplyDelete
  97. the penny may have dropped with these two jokers but dont bet on it

    ReplyDelete
  98. It might be combined price of 19.6m for both. Sakho is worth 19.6m, trust me, but not in his last year & when everybody knows PSG wants to sell him.

    ReplyDelete
  99. i cannot understand how borini never even got on the pitch against county ,if rodgers had any confidence in him he would have started him

    ReplyDelete
  100. Then bale doesn't move and their wages bankrupt the club !!!
How many midfielders are they buying ?they seem to think there playing CM that many players will struggle to form a team and they might end up ruining a team on the edge of champions league ,which helps us if we get the right players in

    ReplyDelete
  101. We have enough young CB ,Kelly and wisdom will be our future ones given 2-3 years of development
Hope agger doesn't leave to Barcelona too

    ReplyDelete
  102. I watch French league regularly. Piere Abumyang & Lekazzete are two of the fastest wingers/forwards in the game & seen this man competing both step by step.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Yep. Need to revamp our negotiating dept.

    ReplyDelete
  104. They've bought some decent players, but their approach does seem quite incoherent. Apparently, each new arrival is a Bale replacement.

    ReplyDelete
  105. every man and his dog thought the same....its doing the club and the player no good its time to cut him loose

    ReplyDelete
  106. Question is, how do you address the situation? Rodgers wouldn't want to replace Gerrard just yet. Coutinho is the creative spark, the future. So may be Lucas' position needs to be looked at first.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Avg doesn't seem to care
Buy everyone then make a team
We need a goal scoring midfielder plus a dm realistically plus sahko ,I like him more than popalodus as he's more experienced and a leader

    ReplyDelete
  108. chelsea dream on always in our shadow

    ReplyDelete
  109. the players they have bought all all recognized European players who will hold a lot of there value for a couple of years....its a bold move by avb and if im honest i hope it pays off for him but not at our ex Spence...hes got balls and hes going for it

    ReplyDelete
  110. its a tuff one thats for sure

    ReplyDelete
  111. liverpool4life56510:34 pm, August 30, 2013

No idea. If I'm honest up to the owners :)

    ReplyDelete
  112. That's the sense I get with AVB. Papadopoulos seems decent, but it would be wrong to buy him in this window without assessing how well he's recovered from his injury.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Loan to buy I think was the only possible option

    ReplyDelete
  114. Really excited - not. While Sakho is a reasonable player Illori has played less than 20 times at senior level in a fairly poor league. Spurs signed Eriksen for €13m and Athletico got Alberweireld for €5m.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Would make sense from our point of view> My understanding is that Schalke weren't thrilled about the loan part.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Clear as ditch water then, I'm asking what you are basing such a detrimental assessment upon? Don't just fling mud at the guy and not back it up.

  117. For the longest time Banoog, I've been saying that Lucas is the weakest link simply because there are so many others who can do the holding midfield role better. Spurs have one in Capoue, why we ignored him beats me when only Cardiff was in for him. Then there's Diame & Wanyama all these would offer better protection for the back 4 & in terms of driving the team forward are galaxies ahead of Lucas!

  118. If this is true then we should have pushed for Papa instead [maybe should have nevertheless]. But let's see. 8 for llori i can see, we paid the same for Alberto and Aspas and it's understandable. Mignolet was the best price we paid this summer so that's a bonus. 19 for Sakho lift's some pressure to it. Again, we'll see. Ya, know need a playmaker who can play right wing as well, then play Suarez, Sturridge, Coutinho, and the new as the front's. Solid stuff - If comes threw - god i hope.

  119. Aye, I was feeling impish. Get what you mean but can't really see that....unless they get the right offer and feel there is a good replacement, or two. He would of course though be available for CL as he wouldn't be cup tied.
Can't see getting two defenders and an attacker either, unless it's say Moses on loan...we don't have the cash for Ilori, Sakho and Yarmolenko it seems to me. Be delighted to be wrong though.

  120. Don't forget that that means Skretel money is up in Jan if not now. Business-wise

    ReplyDelete
  121. The point in which you don't buy a player for one game. . . That's really an annoying comment you wrote.

    ReplyDelete
  122. And if they turn out to be flops, you and everyone else will be complaining that the owners spend too much money on crap players. They cant win!

Oh someone was on about that, in Janaury we will be going back in for papadopoulous, so I agree skrtel might be sold them:)

    ReplyDelete
  124. I don't know. . . Most of BR's singing's since January are great, so i feel he knows what he's getting and how will it work good for us. So better to see first, might just surprise you.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I'm with you on those 3. If you have a midfielder that physically owns the space in front of the defence, teams find it hard to break you down.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Way better than how Arsenal are doing, and not unclass as for which what Spurs are doing. I'll take it i'll take it.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I hope you're wrong. Moses is ok, but I thin we need more if we're going to challenge. There's an ESPN interview with Tom Werner from today that's currently doing the rounds. Don't know why, but it gave me confidence they will spend. How much thought, I don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Sakho is costing £12mil, not 19.6

    ReplyDelete
  129. I do understand the value of saving money if we're sailing in uncharted waters where these boys are concerned. However if we're buying players, who like Agger, are here for their career; then saving a couple of million is pointless if you marry that against what we stand to lose in champs league finances (£40+m). I only hope this doesn't come back to bite us in the arse. Fingers crossed for Sunday (Minus Toure, who has been a revelation the last 2.75 games).

    ReplyDelete
  130. Me too... I just think that they will see another £20-£25 million as spending and that won't be enough for more than Moses after the other two.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Hopefully we'll get an attacking player too.... Honda perhaps...? However the players we are getting are true to what Rodgers said... we buy players to 'fit the system' not players who are supposedly 'great' or whatever and then not be able to fit in. Most likely the reasons why we haven't gotten the likes of Diame and the likes. As for Popa I'd say his injury history put us off. I'm looking forward to see who comes in. Perhaps tomorrow? Even that'd be probably too late to be registered to the united game though.

I heard we made a bid for damiao according to Tancredi Palmeri... Who usually right

    ReplyDelete
  133. Well lets hope so ;) I'm not keen on Moses but hey we've done quite well with transfers with Chelsea in the past so long may it continue :D

    ReplyDelete
  134. All we need now is a DM and a LW and then our buisness is done for the summer if Ilori and Sakho go through. Back up for Lucas whose strong and versatile and can tackle and isnt pushed off the ball easily and for the wing someone whose pacey and has a trick on them to beat defenders. Although to me missing out on Eriksen to Tottenham is a huge blow.

    ReplyDelete
  135. It's Friday night. The window closes Monday COB. We'll be lucky to get these two done by then. Don't get your hopes up for anybody else. If we can get these two we may weather the next few weeks without too much pain. Personally I'm happy if we get just one of them...both would be magnificent. I'm not counting on any other signings though.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Skinnier than Agger?

    ReplyDelete
  137. Before Monday? Really. That sounds like a lot to do in 72 hours when we haven't done that much work all summer. I'm thinking we're done. We've got what we got until January...I'm including both Sakho and LLori.

    ReplyDelete
  138. ...and with the left over money we can buy a shock collar for Johnson. Every bad dribble or shot - ZAP! All problems solved!

    ReplyDelete
  139. Love it...I'd help pay for it...if I got to use the button.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Overpaying a bit for Sakho, but really happy that we would get a dominant CB to hopefully cure our set piece vunerability.
Since Papa would need at least half a season to get up to speed, and Illori can play when e need to counter quick, nimble forwards, I'd say the two together would be the perfect solution; Illori may even turn out to be able to play as a DM with his speed (and as an ex striker may be a threat on set pieces too)
    For those reasons, I'm in!
    PLEASE get them signed pronto....

    ReplyDelete
  141. We absolutely will not!!
We are some £5m or so in credit at the moment, these two would make us £20m spent
Where did you learn to count?

    ReplyDelete
  142. Fair enough good spot. I was mainly saying we should be spending.

    ReplyDelete
  143. It's World Cup year.
Players will need to play to be sharp, Some need to play to be considered.
With Eriksen, Spurs now have 11 midfielders, all wanting to play. They are not winning lots of trophies to keep everyone happy, so it will be amusing to see AVB coping with Lamela, Eriksen Chadli Soldado, Paulinho Sandro Capoue all expecting to play instead of Siggurdson, Holtby, Dembele, Lennon, Adebayor Townsend and Carroll.
Bet it'll be great for team spirit, I'm sure they won't mind....
You can have too much of a good thing sometimes......

    ReplyDelete
  144. It is including add ons, such as winning the League, CL, etc etc, the actual price is lower. Llori's fee does not include the money they owe us for Insua, so its less than stated when that is deducted.

    ReplyDelete
  145. They bought 3 expensive CBs and just expect him to accept being on the bench or in the stands as he grew up with the club. Must affect his motivation- he was club captain before the Billionaires took over.

    ReplyDelete
  146. You're still 70/30 on whether the world is flat or round..
always on the pessimistic side I notice

    ReplyDelete
  147. Agree with you guys. Fingers crossed, will only believe it when signings are confirmed. Judging by the way we handle these transfers, we may very well end up with no new signings.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Ah Ray me oul segotia, Bale to UTD, Suarez to Madrid, breaking news, mark your words etc etc, care to repeat that statement.

    ReplyDelete
  149. If we buy Papadopoulos, we may end up with another Aquilani situation. He had a massive injury from what I read and you're right, we need to assess how well he recovered from it first.

With Spurs, they bought well but not sure if they will gel as a team this season. They will miss Bale a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Theycallmemrburt2:00 am, August 31, 2013

We need power and pace in at CB. PLayers who can go man for man at the back against any striker when our two full backs bomb on. The lad illori is supposed to be quicker than Christiano and the lad Sakho is everything we've been lacking (until the arrival of Toure) We're over spending slightly on good players as apposed to our usual habit of overspending on complete rubbish..

    ReplyDelete
  151. Surely the fact that we got Kolo Toure on a free transfer early on in the transfer window shows we "sorted out the defensive situation months ago". He was the replacement for Carra's retirement and so far has proven to be an excellent signing for free. These two coming in are long-term investments and hopefully will prove to be better than our current centre back pairing.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Please, dont say things like that Gil, it breaks my heart when it does'nt happen.

    ReplyDelete
  153. I noticed DIame was taken off last week, and he was'nt injured, wonder why that was.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Who wants a MAMA and PAPA as CB's

    ReplyDelete
  155. Wisdom are you serious, ?

    ReplyDelete
  156. Read that Spurs has signed Christian Eriksen for only 13.5 mil pounds (11.5 mil pounds + add-ons). How come we were asked for more than 20 mil pounds or is it just rumors that we are interested in the player??? Things are getting strange for LFC. Prices for LFC (after KD and Comolli era) and other clubs are different. Now this Sakho guy's fees suddenly become 19.6 mil pounds (according to some replies here), assuming it's true, it will be a sickeningly stupid panic buy that is doomed for financial failure again. This philosophy of last-minute panic buy and is slowly becoming an Anfield heritage. It will push the club further and further away from rejoining the so-called 'elites' in Europe, both financially and player quality.

    ReplyDelete
  157. You must be wiser than me, because I wouldn't have an inkling what is too much or too little. I get a feeling its similar to selling houses; you get what people are prepared to pay.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Sakho is excellent in the air has pace and is good with the ball at his feet fills the bill nicely and far from average will take time to settle i think but will star.
Though i will concede if the figures are right bet they are not they have overpaid a bit.

  159. 4eva LFC, LFC 4eva4:23 am, August 31, 2013

I really don't understand this whole transfer bullshit, you make an offer for a player and his demands (wages) yes? if they don't except you move on if they except you start up the contract subject to passing a medical, this would be a good way to do business yes? so if it is done like this then how the f$%k can someone come in and highjack the player from you, so obvisouly this is not how it works. which to me seems silly.
You make an offer on a player once club and player are happy everyone waits for him to arrive in England for the medical and then they sign (after he passes) him, seems a very stupid way of conducting business.
Once all parties agree to the deal then a contract should be signed subject to medical that's it other wise, the rich clubs can just sit and wait till the day of the medical (Chelsea) and highjack the move and then the club has no time to find anyone else.
Just like this one, have they agreed if so why are we waiting for someone else to come in and stuff it up for us, can happen.
I hope we can get that Ukraine boy as well.

  160. 4eva LFC, LFC 4eva5:34 am, August 31, 2013

The same amount of CB we have at our club, so don't cast stones because that's all BR seems interested in, oh well at least that position is taken care off.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Tiago Ilori is Amazing weapon for LFC.He start playing as strikers and developn by Sporting Lisbon for central defender player.Good singing and he will give good contribution for the clubs.

Mamadou Sakho is Versatile centreback who can operate leftback.Good ! he also can back up Jose Enricque and Aly Cissoko position areas. He also can make assist and score the goal. That amazing about this new signing.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Could be a number of reasons, from tactics to resting a player. Not sure if you're suggesting he had a bad game. Point is Allardyce was swearing profusely January 2013 hoping Diame wouldn't go when he stayed he described it as the most important decision for the Hammers.
Diame dominates games against top 4 clubs the way Lucas never has, he scores more due to better technique, is more dynamic-springing counter attacks!
Surely you should base your assessment across the season not on a game!

    ReplyDelete
  163. Who's next? Probably Evra to LFC? Thought we need another LB after cisokho is injured ;) tell us more ray! Bring on the sh*t

    ReplyDelete
  164. Ouu that's something to worry about, doesn't make sense as we really need to spend the rest of our money on a winger. Just one thing the site is .de
Were you from mate :) ?

  165. Guys by now sahko shud of completed his medical in time 4 2morrow's game.that is my concern.we goin into the game with an unfit and off form skrtel.man untd will take us 2 the cleaners.tho its still early in the season we cannot afford 2 gamble on our 3points.this game could easily decide whether we make top 4 or not.its a massive 3points 2 mess around with IMO.imagine opening the gap between us by 5points so early in the season.imagine wat will tht do 4 our confidence.since wen is spurs a bigger club than liverpool?eriksen, lamela etc.all at spurs.no man no no no no nooooooooooo

    ReplyDelete
  166. I've seen him play. More than once and there is a reason why he doesn't get a game in at PSG and why they bought Marquinos. Sakho trips over his own feet a lot, turns like lightning, then falls over. Ball at his feet? He tries to look composed and at the very first sign of pressure he panics, often resulting in a pass that in the best possible situation puts pressure on the receiver of it, in the worst, it goes short and people have to clean up his mess before an attacker gets the ball. Basically, if we were going to buy Sakho, we might as well have got Sunderland's Diakite on a free.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Of course they can. Spend good money on good players. Like Willian, or Wanyama, or Lovren (who cost Soton 8.5 million by the way and is an ESTABLISHED, YOUNG player - in stead, we pay 8 million for "potential"). Eriksen and Alderweireld yesterday left Ajax for a combined sum of 20 million euros....we spend 20 milion POUNDS on "potential"

  170. or maybe we never even approached them, they would know spurs have money to burn ,so they would have held out for top dollar ,we could have signed him ,we did not

    ReplyDelete
  171. ive no faith in rogers and ayres ability to sell the club to players thats all

    ReplyDelete
  172. Yes, one bad game and you guys write off youngsters like Coates and Wisdom. Geez..

    ReplyDelete
  173. Willian was 30m. If we bought him and he turned out to be anything other than amazing people would be calling for FSGs heads to roll.

    ReplyDelete
  174. Demblele was one of my fav players while he was at Fulham. He might not get a look in. That is gonna be some job, managing that squad.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Correction Jamie. Your headline should read "€22M DEALS" not "DEAL". These are two separate deals. I can understand if it was a deal for two players at one club then your title would be correct but as that is not the case, your headline is misleading.

    ReplyDelete
  176. shalke 04 got Kevin-Prince Boeting for 12 million euros, Spurs got Eriksen for 13.5 million. But when it comes to Liverpool only how the players are overpriced? I think not the agents but various articles are responsible for overpricing of players.
Moreover poor transfer planning by Arye is also hurting us. We are not able to get targeted transfers because our owners don't act fast enough & other clubs take advantage of this.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Not to sure about those several cast iron signing , Willian and Costa wearnt cast iron, who were the other five ? .

If we have been chasing these for 7 months then that shows planning ?

Happy if we get these two , one thing is for sure , alot of teams are focusing on attack but leaking goals in defence , Tottenham have didn't all money on attack , arsenal are weak at the back, so if we tighten up and keep saurez , then we look good.

Just a note on Henderson , he's working hard and improving each game , very pleased.

    ReplyDelete
  178. Liverpool could of got eriksen and alderweild for 17million for both players but instead there getting sakho who doesnt get on the psg team for 19.6 mill i dont understand

    ReplyDelete
  179. Ta for taking the time to explain your reservations... but given you were also saying he'd be skinned by quick players when in fact the lad's noted for his pace, he's rated by various sources and his stats are good, I'm hoping he's going to shine... and to come back to you after the two games ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  180. Or maybe they just didn't want to sign him because they didn't rate him, and maybe they were right.

    ReplyDelete
  181. Bases on the fact he was their best player prior to the new owners pumping millions into the team the player has been quality but now fallen out of favour with his manager but rather than take the new contract been offers to him to sit on the bench he wants to play football
I hope we sign him true leadership skills good on the ball maybe likes to get forward a bit much but different league I guess
Big hard skillful quick zones good to me

    ReplyDelete
  182. At the end of this, if Skrtel doesn't go, we'll have 5 reasonable quality CB at the club. I think we could simply have gone for Sakho and not worry about the kid for the future. What's the hurry?

    ReplyDelete
  183. There's no pleasing some fans..criticise when we don't spend then when we do we are paying over the odds. :/ if we can get sakho ilori given and Moses over the line ill be extremely happy

    ReplyDelete
  184. Completely and utterly agree - it does not make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  185. Scouts have watched erikson a few times the fact we haven't gone for him means we weren't interested,to be honest we signed players early then missed out on a couple now we seem to trying to land our final signings for the transfer season ,same as everyone else ! Man U and arsenal haven't exactly had a good transfer season either and they can offer CL !!!
,we get who we get remember the best players want CL football we can't even offer euro at all so they won't come without spending over the odds on wages which is very short sighted and we leave us back in financial trouble
We just have to believe in the management that we get the best out of the players we have plus it give the youths already at the club a chance and at least their hungry for it ,plus some of our best players we've had are our home grown talent ,which would you rather support a team full of mercenaries playing for money and willing to leave if someone offers more or things get hard or a team predominately from home grown talent /academy players ?
    Me the latter

  186. Wanyama, a good player WTF? I watched him for 2 years at Celtic as all their games are on TV over here (I live in Derry) and while he had some good games he had more bad games. In my opinion Southampton paid at least £6 million to much for him. You made it clear you don't like Sakho, yet you rate Wanyama so by my reckoning that means Sakho will be like Sami Hyypia

    ReplyDelete
  187. agree with u bro, he is better than france legendary defender, thuram.

    ReplyDelete
  188. Sakho is going to be the signing of the century. Wonderful signing.

    ReplyDelete
  189. I don't think so. People criticised Dalglish and Comoli because they spent a lot of money on players we knew were not worth that type of money in the first place. Everyone knew it. Downing's market value could never be 20 million at his age and his track record. Carrol was clearly overpriced at 35 million with only a half decent season at PL level. Willian has played at the highest level for years. Now obviously Willian was only an example of paying good money for good players. Personally I feel that 30 million is a bit much to pay for him as well. He's not a Brazil regular (not that there's any shame in that!) and he didn't come from a Tier 1 league. But anywhere between 20 and 25 million seems perfectly reasonable to me. Alas, it hasn't happened and we'll live. There are plenty of others out there. I just can't see us going for them. I do expect a rabbit out of the hat striker today though.
