Game Over: Boss claims LFC 'can't afford' to sign 'dangerous' £22m star. Loss...?

Brazil star Leandro Damiao is allegedly on Liverpool's transfer wish-list this summer, but according to Internacional president Giovanni Luigi, the Reds are yet to make any contact with the club over a possible deal.

Last week, The Mirror claimed:

"Liverpool have back-up options [for Willian] in place as potential major signings, and [Damiao] is on that list.

"Brendan Rodgers believes he has the quality that can take the Reds’ forward line to the next level"

When asked this week about his future, Damiao told Brazilian publication UOL:

"It has to be a good offer for me and the club. I am calm, nothing has come and I am still focused on Internacional and in the Brazilian Cup, but if a very good offer comes, then maybe it could happen."

Responding to questions last night about Liverpool's purported interested, Luigi emphatically denied any contact from the Reds. He told Zero Hora:

"Liverpool never made any offer, and I have never received a phone call from them. I don't even know if they could afford to sign Leandro Damiao."

Luis Cesar Souto de Moura, Internacional's Director of football, echoed Luigi's comments:

"They [Liverpool] didn't make an offer. Nothing has come from England, not even inquiries".

In April, de Moura, conceded that Damiao is almost certain to leave the club this summer. He told UOL:

"Leandro Damiao is indeed the player that is most likely to leave Internacional, especially because foreign clubs are interested. Damiao is the player of the moment, everyone is seeing that. He is a great player, he's very special."

Brazil legend Ronaldinho is a huge fan of Damiao, and insists that he will go on to be one of the world's best players. He recently told reporters:

"Damiao is going to be one of the top strikers in the world. I read that he is being linked to the Premier League - the style of his play would make him very dangerous there".

There may be no LFC contact at this stage, but Damiao is definitely for sale, and in July, Internacional director Marcelo Medeiros revealed the striker's transfer fee. He told Globo:

‘The price is £22million. If one of the clubs wants to buy Damiao, this is the price they will have to pay.’

Did anyone really believe that Liverpool would make a serious effort to sign Damiao? I doubt it. If the Reds are genuinely interested then there's still time, but based on Luigi's comments, I can't see it happening.

  2. Why not Damiao or Modric . we were going for Willian apparently for 25 mil plus why not Damiao 20mil
hope we get Sakho and ilori Torres on cheap.

  5. If you have quoted Luigi correctly, saying 'I don't even know if Liverpool can afford him' is quite different from 'insisting' we can't afford him. He's just stating that he doesn't know.

  6. Never liked Damiao, would like Yesil to be used as 4th/5th striker this season

  7. So the Mirror make up a story, the club involved confirm no enquiry has been made, and now there's a story because their owner says he DOESN'T KNOW if we could afford him?
Give me a break. Non story.

  8. JK - Your quote in title is misleading. It implies Luigi said Lpool can't afford him, when he actually said is that he didn't know if he could afford him.
Interesting that Luigi says he hasn't had any contact from England so I wonder just how good this guy is. Spurs were linked a lot yet never bothered with him despite all the cash they've been splashing out on players.
Sounds more like a chairman desperate to make a sale.

  9. He hardly "insisted" on anything did he? Besides which, there's been no evidence we are actually interested in Damiao and although I have heard he can play on the left, he is primarily a striker. If we do get an attacking player, judging by the press conferences Rodgers has given, it will be a natural winger. Also, if the deals for Ilori and Sakho go through, that could cost the club £20m-£25m so you would question whether we could then afford to get a first team quality winger in permanently. Based on that the loan deal for Moses looks the most likely attacking option.

  10. Misleading title no...? It implies Rodgers said it... which he clearly has not.

Ilori has arrived at Melwood. Also regarding yarmolenko, his current club won't sell because they have to many Injurys to Ukrainian players, because they have a limit over their on how many foreign players they can field.

  15. I disagree that its misleading. You are projecting your interpretation. The use if the word 'boss' is simply for brevity. It's much shorter than saying 'President'. Also, I use 'Boss' for every authority figure at a club, whether it's the manager/CEO/ President etc.

I agree, but I'm sure other teams will be interested in him just because of his name.... :)

  19. What's the evidence that Liverpool ever bid that for Willian?

  38. "We're not entering the league just to be fourth. Winning the league is about the best team not just the best players. That's our challenge. It's important for Liverpool to be up there; I think it's important for football for Liverpool to be there because this is one of the biggest clubs in the world. But it doesn't give you a divine right,"

    Rodgers told BBC Sport

  39. Still time for Suarez move to Arsenal, so we'd have only Sturridge and he's always injured.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I know it would be a signing that would bolster the squad but i actually think it would be a detrimental signing to the squad too, hes not particularly quick and for our team i think we need somebody quick through the middle because if we dont then it allows teams to press us higher up the pitch because they are not worried about the pace in behind which means less space for the likes of coutinho.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Never going to happen. Sturridge since jan has played 19, so hes not always injured is he.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I actually agree with you on this. I've watched him a couple of times and honestly he's only worth about £8 million maximum. As you say sounds like a desperate chairman.
