Last month, Liverpool legends Jan Molby and Robbie Fowler revealed their indifference to the proposed signing of Danish midfield star Christian Eriksen, with Molby in particular against the deal altogether. The 'will he, won't he' Eriksen situation is one of the most tedious transfer sagas of the summer, and with less than three weeks to go before the transfer window closes, the youngster still doesn't know if a move will happen.
In July, multiple sources reported that:
* Liverpool put in a €21m (£18m) offer for Eriksen.
* Eriksen had agreed personal terms with Liverpool.
Additionally, former Liverpool winger Ryan Babel confirmed his efforts to convince Eriksen to join the Reds. He tweeted:
"For the LFC fans who have questions about Eriksen, I've gave [sic] him enough information about the club, so he understands LFC. In my opinion, it's LFC who have to make the real effort to get him, then I'm confident for a good ending".
This follows Babel's tweet in May, when he claimed:
"I am convincing [Christian] Eriksen to join Liverpool. He asked me about the club and I hope he joins"
When quizzed about his future plans last night, Eriksen told Danish newspaper BT:
"I do not know if I am going to leave Ajax. We'll find out in two weeks. There are to my knowledge no negotiations right now either with a new club or Ajax. If there is a good approach [from another club], I'll see it as an opportunity to try something new, but if nothing comes, I do not mind staying."
During a recent discussion about Eriksen's future, Jan Molby suggested that signing the midfielder would be a mistake. He told the 5-Times Podcast :
"I don’t believe Liverpool were ever interested in him [Eriksen]. I liked him two years ago. He’s very talented. Perfect balance, and as two-footed as you’d ever want to be, but he has failed to take the next step".
Robbie Fowler also seemed indifferent:
"I’ve seen him [Eriksen] a few times. He’s consistent and he’s steady, but he’s never frightening brilliant"
Bruce Grobbelaar, however, is in favour of signing Eriksen. He told TalkSport:
"If they get rid of Suarez then Liverpool can go to Ajax and get Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld. That would be a great coup"
Fellow Dane Daniel Agger is also a big fan of Eriksen, and in a recent interview, he told Ekstra Bladet:
"Eriksen has the potential to become world-class. He really is a weapon for us [Denmark]. He adds creativity, and always wants the ball. The way he kicks the ball is truly unique".
Ajax boss Frank De Boer recently implied that a move to Liverpool would be a retrograde step for Eriksen. He told Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad:
"If Liverpool go back to really good possession play, it can be a success for Christian. But it does mean that their entire way of playing has to change. If he feels good going to Liverpool anyway, then it is up to him.”
According to Molby, Eriksen has regressed in the last three months to the extent that he's 'failed to take the next step'. I'm not sure many would agree with that, and I suspect that a high proportion of Liverpool fans would be extremely happy to see Eriksen sign for the club.
Alas, I doubt the Reds will be able to pull off this signing. Babel states that LFC 'have to make the real effort to get him', and pulling out the stops to sign a high-value player doesn't appear to be Liverpool's strong suit. The club will probably dither, lowball, and/or ultimately fail to convince Eriksen to sign.
In any event, with Philippe Coutinho taking on the central playmaker role for Liverpool, is Eriksen even needed?

dont care we better sign someone too many leaving
ReplyDeleteidk right now i really think we need another winger as most of our attacks require our wingers cutting in or coming into the play so they are integral to how we play sooooo hoping willian deal pushes trough get in there Ian Ayre (pls do f**k it up AYre)
ReplyDeleteWillian will probably cost us £40m. I want you to convince me that he is worth that?
ReplyDeleteI think Eriksen would be a good signing. I dont think he's improved in the last couple of years because he has outgrown his surrounding i.e the dutch league. Playing around better players may seem him develope
ReplyDeletenot necessarily anzhi's owner has taken a serious hit and has put up all of his players for sale and is also trying to cut down wages which means he shouldn't be so expensive and willian seems to be very creative BR was looking for a creative midfielder/winger in the form of henrik then costa we are looking for a marquee signing and the echo has reported that LFC is enquiring on the status of willian to anzhi so why not at times our attack has been missing that extra umph look at how we play footie now players with a bag load of tricks are necessary now and this guy seems like he has the stuff
ReplyDeleteIf we were really interested he would have been at Anfield by now, to gel with the other players. BR always says its better to get players in early, so I doubt he will arrive now, i'm not too bothered either way.
ReplyDelete40 goals in a career total of 274 matches?
ReplyDeleteI would much rather give Ibe a good run then have to pay this guy 100k plus a week.
really we're going there so what about coutinho then what was his record for inter? u have to buy players that suit our playing style and imo he does
ReplyDeleteIf Eriksen was really interested he would have been at AC Milan by now. The lad is too big for his boots.
ReplyDeleteCoutinho is still a spring chicken.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree that I don't think Willian would be value for money. It would be a purchase to appease the fans, a so-called 'marquee' signing. There are very few players in world football that would prove value for money at that price point and certainly even fewer available at this point in the transfer window, even fewer willing to come to Liverpool.
ReplyDeleteMax, willian, assist ratio at clubs is pretty good, he would give Sturridge, aspas, suarez(if he stays) goals on the plate, he a very smart player but also he can score goals. :)
ReplyDeleteSource: squawka So far this season he has found success in terms of taking on an opposition, 68% of the time. On top of this, he boasts a passing accuracy of 85%.
ReplyDeleteWhat’s more, his creative abilities will have certainly caught the eye of Europe’s top sides. Already this campaign Willian has fashioned 16 shooting opportunities for his team-mates, 3 of these becoming assists.
id be surprised if we pay out this much....maybe if suarz goes but otherwise no.....plus in not to sure this guy is all hes cracked up to be...
ReplyDeleteWe are willing to pay 30 million for him, their owner of his club is selling players because in two days he lost half a billion in another company. so he would accept near that amount and we would pay him 100k a week.
ReplyDeleteim sick of Eriksson at first i wanted him but if rogers is sticking with tino in midfield hes surplus..plus i hate to side with max but the kids walking around as though his sh*t dint stink
ReplyDeleteHow many assists did he provide last season?
ReplyDeleteFor who?
ReplyDeleteHis team.
ReplyDeleteim deducting the team he plays for
ReplyDelete2012/13 for shakter: 14 games 6 assist, angi, 7 games 1 goal 1 assist, 2011/12 season scored 5 assisted 16 in 27 games.
ReplyDeleteAnd LFC definitely do not want to make major losses on players again anytime soon, that I can assure you!
ReplyDeleteThose stats do not show reliability especially not for a hefty transfer fee.
ReplyDeleteSource for the 2011/2012 stats?
Yaro, journalist in Russia :) and he would fit into our system, he has skill, pace, strength to adapt to the PL. we've got to take a chance on him, it's worth taking,
ReplyDeleteNot if there is a risk in losing big money again like we have been if signing him does not work out.
ReplyDeleteI think it be fine, if we don't take the risk another PL team would....
ReplyDeleteWould it be fine if it was your money being spent?
ReplyDeleteHe needs convincing to join Liverpool, before anyone convinces you, lol. Liverpool won't spend 40 million, maybe 25-30(with all the fees and wages saved from outgoing players+kitty) Unless they have agreed to sell Suarez, on the hush, hush.
ReplyDeleteNope, but FSG are fine with it, so I am to :)
ReplyDeleteWillian for me, he's been decent on Fifa for a couple of years, lol. But Eriksen is there as a fall back. On a serious note, its irrelevant. No one knows if any of these players want to come and if Liverpool want these players, in the first place.
ReplyDeletebit like carroll and downing hahaha
ReplyDeletenot brilliant but better than we have ,and at least somone with real potential
ReplyDeleteBut this guy has better stats ;-)
ReplyDeleteHe's been available for months now. (Erikson) Isn't it clear, IF we wanted him, we would of got him by now!!
ReplyDeleteForget this move. It's not gonna happen!
Whatever money we have left should go to a CB and Willian (if that rumor is to be believed)
ReplyDeleteEriksen's situation isn't much different from Torres' back when we got him imo. Everyone thought they'd be really good players but when their respective clubs were willing to let their prize asset go there was/is this universal uncertainty surrounding the player. We took the chance on Torres and the rest is history. I personally think we need to strenghen elsewhere, but I believe that this is the only real time a player of this calibre will actually be on the radar for us until we hit that 4th spot. I say sign him up before the sleeping giants wake up and we're outpriced next year.
ReplyDeleteI think you're on to something here. Same things were said about Torres until we made the offer and he blossomed with us. I think this is a similar situation and I think we need to take this risk on Eriksen while the big guns seem to have forgotten about him and the price is very reasonable
ReplyDeleterather offer 5 million for ricky lambert we need some height in the team .and if we got 3 seasons out of him it will be money well spent
ReplyDeleteMidfielder Eriksen would be a mistake! AULDERWEIRELD is the priority for the defense!
ReplyDeleteI don't see how ppl make these judgments on the personalities of players who haven't really revealed anything of themselves in public.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I can see, lots of clubs have registered a passing interest in Eriksen so far, but no viable offers (i.e. major clubs in major leagues) have been put on the table for him just yet.
ive said before rogers has a napoleon complex he only buys small players
ReplyDeleteHe got 4 goals in 6 CL appearances for Shakhtar last season (2 against Chelsea 2 against Nordsjaelland) can't find how many assists he got if any. Proved he can do it on the big stage. £30 million not to sure really? Good player but i think where dreaming again.
ReplyDeleteI really don't think we're after him. If the club was genuinely interested then they would make a bid. He's been supposedly available all this time, there is no reason to have not gotten him by now. 18 million isn't a massive amount of money considering we were happy to pay for Mhkitaryan and comfortably dished out 15 million for Allen. If it were true, why isn't he a Liverpool player? I'd guess we made an enquiry, showed a bit of interest, but ultimately decided he wasn't for us. Eriksen is clearly interested in a move but this seems to be just another over-used story about nothing. We keep mentioning his name but probably nothing is going to happen.
ReplyDeleteits ok having the tricky little players in your team ,but you need a bit of muscle as well
ReplyDeleteIt would certainly keep Agger happy :-) You can never have too many good players! Dreaming here but if we signed Sakho, Eriksen, Willian and Siqueira. I'd be a very happy fan. What a team we would have but i'm dreaming someone wake me up lol. If it meant selling Suarez then why the hell is he still here probably even get a winger if Suarez was gone.
ReplyDeleteHe may not be a world beater. But you have to compare him to what we currently have, and I would say he is significantly better than Allen and Henderson.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Eriksen will end up with us. It's a bit odd no one has signed him yet if you consider the hype that was around him all season. But seeing as our transfer policy appears to be to allow our rivals to sign all decent players out there whilst we focus on the bottom of the primera liga or even the segunda liga for our "reinforcements"
ReplyDeletei dont think the willian deal is even an option, just something media has cooked up. you look at the fact that he is 100k a week and would cost us 30m. i really do not think its going to happen
ReplyDeleteIan ayre needs to be sackeds and
ReplyDeletejohan cruyff apointed as director of football
I think he was an awesome prospect a few years ago and also played the position that is very wanted over the last few seasons.
ReplyDeleteBut over that time he hasnt turned into the player that other like Hazard and Gotze have turned into which is a shame.
i'd take a pop of maybe 7 + assaidi. which would most likely get turned down. then i'd go and make a little higher offer maybe 9-11m for Ljajic.
I'd rather have who Milan are after, Ljajic.
ReplyDeleteI think Eriksen did play on the wing a good few times, with Suarez on the other wing, when Luis was at Ajax.
ReplyDeleteIMO thats where we may come unstuck...
ReplyDeletehes a better version of allen..but as a player hes nothing like hendo...hendo is about the most physical midfielder we have in terms of energy &size granted hes no zidane buy there will be games this year where we will be overrun physically and thats where we will need him
ReplyDeleteEriksen is another perfect example of how the media narrative can drive fan's opinions of a player (most notably exemplified by the case of Yann M'vila in the last couple of years).
ReplyDeleteEriksen was a quality player a few months ago and remains a quality player now. The only reason that I went off him initially was due to the fact that we signed Coutinho, who looked to have a duplicate skillset, and I didn't believe the club could afford to (again) target resources in such a manner.
If his signing didn't prevent the signing of another forward (or two) and centre-back, seeing as a powerful CM won't be coming in regardless, I'd love to have Eriksen at LFC,
That isn't really saying much tbh.
ReplyDeleteHenderson is like our version of Ramires. He's far from a physically dominant central midfielder however.
We don't really need eriksen at this point of time. What we really need is a leftback and a leftwinger who can score goals.Maybe a centre back as well to challenge for the second spot.(Presumably Agger stays). But i do see eriksen as a Steven Gerrard's long term replacement as he is able to play centre mid as well.
ReplyDeletewho knows but liverpool still need that marque signing imo
ReplyDeletethere is no where about it m8
ReplyDeletehis assists were 68% and thats brill in any language, for someone so young...
ReplyDeleteYou could say that about Suarez too.Just because no one has come in for him does NOT mean he's not a good player etc.
ReplyDeleteI really think signing him could be a great signing.I don't agree with Molby,For Eriksen to step up a gear he needs to leave the Eredivise. He's surpassed it.It's a long time since I've wanted Liverpool to sign a player so much :P
ReplyDeleteWith Suarez we know what the problem is. He's not doing himself any favours by being such a hassle. It's fine for us because we can't get any better players to come to us but if you're Real Madrid and you already have a team of superstars, you may want to add another one but not one who's going to be doing more harm than good.
ReplyDeletedid he ever work in a chocolate factory before he took his coaching badges ????
