Boss confirms: It's 'impossible' for £20m Brazil maestro to stay. Chance for LFC...?

Altetico Mineiro coach Cuca has reiterated once again that Brazilian international Bernard Anício Caldeira Duarte - aka Bernard - is almost certainly on his way out of the club this summer.

Liverpool are monitoring the 20-year old attacker, and according to The Telegraph last week:

"Liverpool are interested in Brazilian winger Bernard and have approached his club, Atletico Mineiro.

"Bernard has a release clause of around £20 million.

"The South American is wanted by several Champions League clubs, Arsenal among them"

In July, Cuca conceded that Mineiro 'won't be able to keep Bernard', and in an interview last night, he reiterated he told reporters:

“He [Bernanrd] is a great player, but it is very difficult, almost impossible for him to stay here. He will travel, will do his stuff. You have to see all the good he did. He went from heaven to hell, but "

The 20-year old Brazilian is also linked with a move to Porto, and when asked about his future on Friday, he revealed a refreshingly down to the earth attitude about his next move. He told Lancenet:

"Money isn't everything in life. I want to be happy and if that means staying in a place earning less money, then that's what I want. The pressure is big from all sides. I have to sleep with this weight, and I ask God to guide me somewhere"

Liverpool clearly have a big opportunity here. Like Coutinho, Bernard is only 20 years old, and he may see the rising Reds as an attractive proposition. Additionally, he's probably much more likely to get regular first-team football at Anfield.

Bernard's team-mate Ronaldinho is a big fan of the youngster, and in a recent interview, the Brazilian legend enthused:

"He [Bernard] is a big talent. It's a pleasure to share in the moment when another star is born. I am happy and I hope he continues in this manner for many, many years."

It's easy to see why Brendan Rodgers is interested in Bernard - he's basically Coutinho MK2:

* Young, Brazilian flair player.
* Lots of experience despite his age (97 games for Mineiro)
* Already a full Brazil international (5 games so far)

£20m, though? Bernard may be an exciting player, but if that amount of money is to be spent on one player then it should (IMO) go on the finished article, i.e. someone experienced, who will go straight into the first team and make an immediate, game-changing impact.

To be fair, Coutinho did exactly that when he arrived at the club, and if Bernard did the same, I doubt many fans - myself included - would question the signing.

  1. i understand your point Jaimie. 20M should only go on a finished article, and the money these days being spent on players is absolutely exrrodinary. but this boy Bernard is very good. infact, hes too good and hes potential, like coutinho, can reach the heights of messi if they work hard. hes better than the oscar that left brazil for 25M and better than oscar now. normally when players join liverpool, due to the way our foundations have been set in our team, you normally only have to do well in your position. as we've seen from sturridge and coutinho. so if bernard come in and claimed our left wing role i'd be more than happy. i'd also much rather us trigger Bernard's release clause than Diego Costa. something in Costa's transfer feels too risky. i think its coz of the price. but instead of Costa, why dont we trigger Loic Remy's 8M release clause and sign Bernard for a combined fee of 28M. Not bad for 2 immensely quality players. and surely Loic Remy is better than Costa, lightening quicker, more agile, flair, CL experience and goals, PL experience and goals and only 26, playing in the Championship? seems like a no brainer to me.

I would settle for Remy and Bernard to end our summer. but i'd also like to see Diame at liverpool as i think our DM position should be addresed.

Hopefully we'll look like this next season

  2. 12 days left till season starts hope I am wrong think we will be linked to everyone but will get nothing of great importance .
Rodgers is now been Quoted as saying allen will shine . He has to stick buy him he signed him. And is saying that we are not buying midfielders.
Then he also will come in support of borini same thing wont be signing any new forwards .
Just can see any signings of great celebrations .

  3. You need at least Lucas, Allen or Hendo somewhere in there otherwise you would get seriously overrun.

  4. 2 seasons ive watched the transfer deadline day with disappointment but this time ive got a feeling were going to snap up a few names

  6. Not sure about Costa. Done fairly well last season but he's been on loan a lot from Atletico.... He could be baggage, I.e off the field probs/disciplinary things. Hope we go for Bernard. He could be awesome. £20M doesn't get you a finished article these days. It buys exceptional talent/potential. It's top whack for a talented 20yr old. That's the way football is going... Getting crazy

  7. Financial fair play, what a joke! MAN CITY have spent 90m+ and MADRID are on the verge of breaking the transfer record on BALE after spending a small fortune on the likes of ISCO and a few others.
MONACO and PSG's billionaires are playing a real life game of football top trumps.MONACO a team that doesn't even get gates over 20k.It will be impossible for them to adhere to the fair play guidelines.Football isn't getting crazy it's already in the nuthouse!

  8. totally agree with you about rodgers and allen what more can hendo do to prove he is the better player ,rodgers ego and his refusal only to play allen on merit ,will cost us again this season

  9. what did you expect ,the rules are there to protect the big clubs ,and not let any little nobody spoil the party ,its a complete waste of time no doubt ,we will stick to it ,but if you have an owner who is willing to spend the rules will be broken

  10. Shahkter Donetsk have had a bid accepted as Zizoulogy understands but he doesn't really want to go there, he's holding out for Porto but he's travelled to Ukraine to visit the city. I'd love him at Liverpool, he's quicker than coutinho and pace is always handy

  13. We should be in for Ljacic for the price he is rumored to be going for. Milan are closing in on him for 10m euros. Not got long on his contract, hence price. Not exactly an angel but he is a very good attacking midfielder. He was better than Jovetic last season, in terms of form.

  14. it seems john henry as other ideas were we need strengthening ,hes just bought the boston globe,i hope its not suarez,s replacement will not be much good on a wet and windy day at anfield ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Amazing that the Boston Globe has been sold for a tenth of the price that it sold in 1993.

  16. wow i wonder if they can do that with lfc

    ReplyDelete
  17. no offence but a midfield of gerrad suarz and tino will have more holes than a polo factory...we will concede 5 goals a game

    ReplyDelete
  18. J. Henry has always stated his business in America is separate to LFC. It's pretty obvious we made a bid for Mkhitaryan (unsuccessful) in the past, and recently D. Costa (pending). I don't understand why there are some fans out there who sit on their laptops, refreshing transfer pages expecting things to happen every second. Over £75m spent last year on players (not including sales), £41m spent on players so far this calender year (not including sales). What else do they have to do to win your approval? Stop being a skirt and calm down.

PS. People will take you more seriously if you bother checking your grammar after writing dross.

It's his money at end of the day it doesn't affect liverpool so this shouldn't matter. We are still in the market for players.

    ReplyDelete
  22. let´s just hope it isn´t up to the suarez sale if we buy someone or not...

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm tired of all the speculation.

The league starts soon and we still haven't signed any big names that will excite fans and show a real intent from our club.

I'm not saying Aspas doesn't look like a true bargain or that I don't rate any of our signings, but I truly hope we can get any of the big names that were linked with us this summer such as Eriksen or Bernard.

I also hope Alderweireld or Papadopolous would be signed, but that's not the priority IMO.

  34. liverpool4life5659:20 pm, August 04, 2013

You said this window, why are you mentioning last seasons players? Obviously players we've brought are good players who have improved us. Also Allen doesn't deserve to be on your list. He making a impact again. Being in the right position. All he needs to work on is his finishing. Which over time will come.

    ReplyDelete
  35. allen scored yesterday so what .i would have scored that sitter ,the biggest difference between me and allen is i would have been celebrating my second goal ,because i would have nailed the sitter he got just prior to that

    ReplyDelete
  36. It being in the right position to make the tap in,I think Allen will do alright this season,He may even make a few people eat humble pie.

    ReplyDelete
  37. liverpool4life5659:43 pm, August 04, 2013

Allen has good position play that's why he cuts out the opponents passes and he knows where to be to score. Players make chances for themselves. And if you say so even micheal Owen on BT said its a hard to finish that because how it's come to you.

And regarding J Henry, I think so far so good, he's spending money, I genuinely feel that he will extend anfield unlike the other liars

  40. "What you don't want is them leaving football and going into another sport with there money"
That's exactly what i want. You make it sound like football can't survive without the extra money multi-billionaires bring in.
Clubs have many ways to generate money.TV deals, sponsors, tournament participation, merchandise sales and match day revenue. You're happy with sugar daddy handouts but that side of football doesn't go down well with me.

  41. For 20 mill we could stoop inn and bring "the little one" back home. He will thrive as soon as he put the red shirt back on, and start getting his feeds from Mr.Fantastic. Chelski never really recognized, or at least never made use of the pure brilliance in "El Ninòs" runs. Scoring goals, in most cases (when considering world class players) is just a matter of confidense.

BR: If you can utilize hes speed and Balance of Torres and bring his confidence back up, you could wipe out the loss of Zour Ass in one swoop.

I was truly pissed off when i heard that he didnt recognise the kops sulute. Is that true by the way? Anyone who was actually at the testimonial pliz confirm? If thats the case hes stricken of my books together With Fellani, Ribery and a very few more.

Whats your point? should Joe have been skipping past people with a broken shoulder and borinini running around on a broken ankle ?
Assaidi hasn't actually looked too bad when hes played hes just not what rogers is wanting yet by the looks of things

    ReplyDelete
  43. Maybe you know is it true or can Jamie find out that Suarez did not turn up to gerrard dinner ???????????

    ReplyDelete
  44. Also reports that FSG bought news paper company .

    ReplyDelete
  45. Finished articles cost 50 million. Or 115 million. Or 80 million. Or 580 million going by Messi's release clause. Suarez was no finished article and we paid over 20 million for him. Downing isn't even an article and we paid 20 million for him. If this guy is as good as people say he is, 20 million shouldn't stop us. And if Suarez and Coutinho can play in the same lineup, so can Coutinho and this guy.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Gerrard played deeper at the start of his career and not too shabby either. Later on, we needed his vision and pushing forward to get us goals and he was backed by Mascherano, Sissoko and Xabi (man what a midfield....). Now we have passmasters who can open up defences and Gerrard's age means he may have to drop back a bit to make up for him losing pace and explosiveness. He could eventually maybe even drop back to CB imo.

    ReplyDelete
  47. You call that cup ? Omg...

    ReplyDelete
  48. I've sometimes pictured a 35+ year old Gerrard at right back, so I get what you mean.

In a formation like the 4-2-3-1 you need a dedicated defensive player in the midfield, a ball winner. I don't think that's Gerrard's role if he has someone like Coutinho next to him. Gerrard isn't the problem in the team Kopite S listed, it's the other players and their positions. Gerrard could play deeper, but Coutinho as a partner would just not work.

Every team has this deeper player, who then has 1 or 2 more advanced/attacking players and you listed them...Busqeuts, Martinez...Lucas, Tiote. You need to balance attack and defence.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Barca's midfield is Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta. Enforcer, distributor, attacking midfielder. So Gerrard enforcer, Coutinho distributor, Suarez AM. Coutinho does have the eye for the long pass and he can hit it. I do feel though that it would be underusing him. Thing is, I can't see Allen or Lucas as enforcer or distributor.

    ReplyDelete
  50. JK my reply to a comment made was deleted. Why was it taken down?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Your comment wasn't taken down; it fell foul of the word filter. It should be live now. Sorry, but it's a necessary evil, and I'm pretty sure 99% of your comments go live first time...?

    ReplyDelete
  52. For me, Lucas is the enforcer, Gerrard the distributor, and Henderson the AM. Coutinho is very effective on the left and I would only play Suarez on the wings or as striker.

Allen seems like he can grow into being a perfect distributor, but last season he had to play DM, and this season suddenly Rodgers is playing him in AM. It doesn't make much sense to me.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Suarez played behind Huntelaar at Ajax and that worked well. Although he did drift in from the left alot like he does for us. As for the enforcer role, I just can't see Lucas doing it. That's why I felt we needed someone like Wanyama, Diame or a fit Momo Sissoko even. Then Gerrard could be the distributor and Coutinho the AM although Gerrard doesn't have the patience and composure players like Xabi and Xavi have. I think that's actually why he admired Xabi so much and vice versa. Those two together would have made the perfect midfielder imo.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Throw Mascherano into the mix, what a midfield...

You have to be realistic, personally I don't think it's gonna get much better than Lucas anytime soon, and I think he can get the job done anyway.

Also, for me the AM has to be defensively capable. I don't think Coutinho can handle it the centre of the pitch. Tracking back is one thing, but marking your man and tackling is another. Only Gerrard and Henderson are capable IMO.

Suso played AM and lasted 30 minutes before getting subbed off, that type of player in AM didn't work. If you look at the players Rodgers has tried in CAM, they've been Gerrard, Shelvey, Henderson, Suso and recently Allen. Apart from Suso there's no typical flair player in the mould of Coutinho/Suso playing there. It didn't work and I'd rather not try it again.

  55. Maybe this kid is it. The clip above just made me think....Juninho (the Boro player, not the Lyon player).

    ReplyDelete
  56. yes they bought a paper ,think it was the boston globe ,hope its not our suarez replacement

    ReplyDelete
  57. at least he will not have to eat what hederson as to eat to get a shot

    ReplyDelete
  58. you even try and defend rodgers about his treatment of assaidi the mind boggles

    ReplyDelete
  59. What clip? Wouldn't mind the old Juninho from Boro in his prime :)

    ReplyDelete
  60. Like some people have said before sell to buy .
    suarez = boston globe .

    ReplyDelete
  61. No, I think from what I've seen he should be playing him more, I like him he looks like a different option for us, If he doesn't get sold which i don't think he will, I can see him getting time this season, hes just taken part in a few Pre seasons and looked pretty strong

    ReplyDelete
  62. 2 Players within next 2 weeks mate ;)

  63. Cool more fans then as i can see the paper mentioning LFC at every chance

    ReplyDelete

  66. Allen = book or two Borini = First aid kit
