61% Shock: The true cost of LFC's catastrophic £55m transfer fail. Who's to blame...?

Earlier this summer, Liverpool made an incredible £20m loss on Anfield flop Andy Carroll, who cost the Reds a ruinous £35m in January 2011. Stewart Downing has now joined Carroll at West Ham in a £6m deal, and whilst it's arguably a good thing to get the winger off the wage bill, the club will lose a massive £14m overall. Just looking at transfer fees alone, Liverpool will make a damaging combined £34m loss on Carroll and Downing, but a closer look at the figures reveals that the overall loss to LFC is far worse than that.

The £35m purchase of Andy Carroll is destined to go down in history as the worst transfer ever completed by a Liverpool manager.

It gets worse, though: if you add Downing into the equation, the catastrophic mismanagement of the club's transfer funds becomes even more painfully clear. Consider the following:

 photo ScreenShot2013-08-13at165502_zps4862bc35.png

NB. The salary costs quoted for Downing and Carroll are media estimates, but in the absence of exact, verifiable figures, this is the next best thing. Plus, it's probable that their actual salaries are pretty close to the quoted amounts.

Whatever way you look at it, financially speaking, Downing and Carroll represent a staggering financial loss for Liverpool FC, and after this level of stunning transfer negligence, FSG are absolutely right to take a more cautious approach to player purchases. Who is to blame for this mess, though? In my view, the following - in order of blameworthiness - must take responsibility:

1. FSG
2. Kenny Dalglish
3. Damien Comolli

FSG were new to British football, and they clearly trusted the judgment of Dalglish and Comolli. After all, if they couldn't trust one of game's greatest and most experienced legends, who could they trust?

This doesn't, however relinquish FSG of overall responsibility. They sign the cheques; they make the funds available, and even without knowledge of football, anyone with any insight or intelligence could see the sheer folly in spending £35m on an unproven striker with only 6 months top-flight experience.

Dalglish will always be an Anfield legend, but the sad truth is that during his second spell in charge, he made some lamentable mistakes in the transfer market, and these errors have arguably set Liverpool back 2-3 years.

Comolli may have identified transfer targets, but he had no power to actually make decisions and/or individually sign anyone. FSG and Dalglish ultimately made the decisions, which is why they must take the lion's share of the blame for this particular transfer catastrophe.

As indicated earlier, it's not just the financial loss that stings; it's the loss of utility to the club over the last 3 years. If the £55m outlay on Downing and Carroll had been spent *wisely*, it's probable that the Reds would be much closer to the Champions League right now, or even in the competition itself.

  1. Only Mr Comoli can be blamed.

  2. How come you have only highlighted carrol and downing transfers? Because that is cancelled out with the sale of FERNANDO TORRES £50 MILLION, and LUIS SUAREZ was bought in the same era so when he goes it will be + £105 million ( Torres , Suarez) - £55 million ( carrol , downing ) which in my eyes is a profit of £50 million , well done LFC. So will the writer stop highlighting the negatives on there own , by publishing the positives aswell. YNWA

  3. Comolli has to be the worst negotiator ever but fact is that if you are planning on buying British players then they will cost you an arm and leg.

    ReplyDelete
  4. If Carroll and Downing came with a combined fee less than 25m, they would not have so much pressure on their shoulder and probably do their job better. Even though they might not be players of top-4 category, they could be good bit-part players.

    ReplyDelete
  5. What you've highlighted is irrelevant. It makes no difference to the money wasted on Downing and Carroll. Irrespective other transfers, LFC did, as a matter of fact, pay other clubs £55m for Downing and` Carroll. Where the money came from doesn't matter; what matters is the benefit LFC got for that outlay, which in real terms, is basically nil.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Why? He didn't make the decision to actually spend those amounts on Downing and Carroll, and there is no proof that he set the fees. Dalglish and FSG had final say; they made the decision to actually pay the money for those two, so surely they have to take most of the blame.

    ReplyDelete
  7. JK why are you responding to someone who probably has no clue on finances. He is one of them people who want us to to keep spending!

    ReplyDelete
  8. I agree that the cost was ridiculous but you have to put it in context of Torres's departure.

I am starting to worry about the apparent lack of willingless to spend for quality targets, though I am happy with the young potential at the club.

I wonder what would have happened if we signed Mikhitarian, and whether or not we would be looking to offload players again.

  10. RedHotLouie is correct. As much as those two purchases were terrible, you could highlight other clubs as much worse if all their flops were added up - Chelsea with Zhircov(?!?), Shevchenko, Kezman, Mutu, Phillips, Veron +more. This is arguably more expensive flop list. I guess its all respective. Also it is impossible to expect every signing to work all the time.

  11. I have been saying this for awhile now!! This is why FSG do not want to spend!! JK also forgot the 15 Million quid we paid KK when he got sacked!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. why did dalglish sign the cheques

    ReplyDelete
  13. I didn't say Dalglish signed the cheques. He is the manager, and he will have had more say on transfers than Comolli.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Whoever was to blame, I think we have been paying for it ever since! Carroll, Downing, Henderson and Adam all came in that season with over the top prices... Many say we got 50m at the time for Nando, but spent wiser and we would not be in the same boat! Same cost for Carroll same time was Falcao... We had the chance for Mata instead went for Downing... Need I say more! Those two additions would have been HUGE signings!

    ReplyDelete
  15. why not add the 25m for borini and allen.......

    ReplyDelete
  16. he identifies players and is told the money is there...just like managers at chelsea , city and utd have done....its not kennys fault that fsg where telling him to spend money they didn't have or are you telling me that fsg are so incompetent with money they dont know what they have...if thats the case they shouldnt be running a club in fact they shouldnt be running a bath

    ReplyDelete
  17. @gilstrap

Carroll + Downing = 55 million. How can you compare that to two players who will probably be far better purchases.?

    ReplyDelete
  18. your figures are wrong, how can carrol be at liverpool longer and earn more per week yet cost liverpool less in wages

    ReplyDelete
  19. I no but you are only highlighting the negatives as usual Jamie , when LFC weigh things up at the end of year they look at the balance of fees ( positive income , and negative income) I know that it's a big loss but, when you weigh the 2 together it's not as bad, but just with the negatives it is bad as you have clearly shown.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I want to see you do better than FSG then.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes, that's right - just absolve the *manager* of the club of all responsibility. How do you know that FSG were 'telling Kenny to spend the money'? Who identified the targets? FSG, or Dalglish/Comolli? Dalglish would've discussed transfer targets with FSG, and he would've convinced them to sign the likes Carroll/Downing etc. It doesn't just happen in a vacuum.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well LFC is not Chelsea! Brainiac thinK!! You can't waist money like that and expect to have more

    ReplyDelete
  23. who cares it was two years ago .the 3 partys to blame all take equal responsibilty the fact is only one party is still at the club ,and now they have gone the other way and are making mistakes now as bad as them ,except its not costing them money

    ReplyDelete
  24. well lets face it i doubt he could do worse

    ReplyDelete
  25. Comolli was the negotiator when it came to the price but fact remains is that we should have never end up paying 55 million for players who had zero impact at LFC.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah the mistakes they are making is not spending like they did before right??? Who on the team you can say is as bad as them players bought by BR? I bet every player you going to mention only has one year at the club. The others had more with the exception of Charlie Adam

    ReplyDelete
  27. You're entitled to your view, but anything else that happened outside these two transfers is just an excuse. Looking at the £55m spend in the context of other transfers doesn't make the outlay look better in the slightest. The point you seem to be ignoring is this:

    * £55m passed from LFC to Newcastle and Villa.

    * That money was totally and utterly wasted.

    * If that money had been spent properly, LFC might not be struggling to finish in the top 7 right now.

    * Just because LFC got £50m for Torres doesn't change the fact that LFC spent £55m on two flops.

You can twist it any way you like, but it in reality, it makes no difference.

If you want balance, go to the BBC website. I'm under no obligation to look at every side of the story.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Give us a solution Mr. CARR

    ReplyDelete
  29. you can give borinni ten years m8 he will not make it,yes they made mistakes spending the money but now they are making mistakes not spending it ,because believe me if we do not sign some class players soon and suarez goes ,i would celabrate the carling cup as much as a european cup ,because we will win nothing again and will be nowhere

    ReplyDelete
  30. heres a simple one buy some players ,and do not faf about

    ReplyDelete
  31. hahaha OK true we need players and quick! But remember what them 3 parties did two years ago has sent us back and right now I won't mind them selling club. But we have to be careful cause remember what the other Americans did.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Do you and have you ever run a football club as gig as LFC.

    I thought so.

    ReplyDelete
  33. when did we have a chance at mata ,its hear say

    ReplyDelete
  34. does kenny know how much they have ....if they are giving you the green light why would you question it ...kenny isnt there accountant

    ReplyDelete
  35. Not just for the sake of buying. We need quality not Names!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Why does he have to know how much money FSG have? He will have discussed the £35m fee with FSG, and I imagine they would've asked him - as the manager - if he thought it was worth it. This is how it usually works in football, or are we to believe that the manager has no say in transfer negotiations and/or does not discuss fees with club owners?!

    ReplyDelete
  37. he thing is we are not as gig as you think ,and give it a couple more seasons like last and i doubt we will ever get anywhere near again

    ReplyDelete
  38. So Bankrupt the club cause someone gave you a green light?? Wow!!! and KK took 15 Million along with him with his troubles.

    ReplyDelete
  39. if they cannot hack it sell it

    ReplyDelete
  40. funny all the kenny bashers come out when rogers is underprssure...when we signed carroll where where you...when he took over from roy h where where you
when carroll banged two in against city where where you...when gerrard lifted the cup ...the first for several seasons where where you

    ReplyDelete
  41. The same year we had the chance for Mata and he was happy to come over... Then after that Chelsea picked him up! This was rumours after Rafa had his eye on him, then Comolli also was keen but Kenny decided to go British instead!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I was spurring the team on. Where were you?

    ReplyDelete
  43. the price was dictated by the torres fee john henry himself has come out with that statement

    ReplyDelete
  44. All I can say as a Hammers fan is thank you very much as I think they will both do well at West Ham.
I agree that both players were not good enough for a team like Liverpool but are ideal for a side like West Ham.
Unfortunately it was not just Liverpool spending too much money, it was everybody. You only have to look at West Ham and the Iclandic owners to see what a lucky escape you had. Our spending was so bad, If we had not been bought by Gold and Sullivan, we would have gone under.
Anyway good luck for the new season, I think you will do well

    ReplyDelete
  45. agree but we have not been serious about signing quality this transfer window ,every half decnt player we have been linked to you can take with a pinch of salt ,were broke ,and if i see john henry come out on tv once more ant say we are not a selling club we are a buying club my tvs going through

    ReplyDelete
  46. That's your argument?? lol

    ReplyDelete
  47. no i was watching tika taka at swansea

    ReplyDelete
  48. I agree that they were huge flops and I was strongly against the buying of them, but Torres was not outside the window he was sold in the same window carrol came in and Suarez, so overall Torres out £50 million Suarez and carrol in £53 million, was a good bit of business at the time , anyway Jamie you could look at it both ways, but I do agree that they were flops but we did get the money virtually for nothing ( Chelsea Torres )

    ReplyDelete
  49. Does not matter.

Carroll and Downing have gone at a 34 million loss.

    ReplyDelete
  50. they are trying hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  51. spot on mate i swear we are being brainwashed ,win naff all do naff all in the league and were wonderful

    ReplyDelete
  52. I understand mate! As much as I support BR I don't want him saying anything about "work behind the scenes"

    ReplyDelete
  53. the sooner the better ,

    ReplyDelete
  54. of coarse it matters if john henry is telling kenny to do it as a gesture

    ReplyDelete
  55. Let's agree to disagree. With respect, you just don't see the point I'm trying to make.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Most of that cash was from the sale of Torres, so it was actually £5million spend. Although it was still a huge waste. Pity we did'nt have a decent manager at the time, Rafa would have spent it on better players and still have had change.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I think you're right that they'll do well for West Ham. Downing improved last season, and he can still do a good job. He's just not consistent enough when it comes to goals and assists.

    ReplyDelete
  58. liverpool4life5655:08 pm, August 13, 2013

KD an comolli are to blame. FSG had just came in didn't know much about football. Now they've learnt their lesson and started to give Rodgers abit more rope after he brought in well.

    ReplyDelete
  59. like aquaman and roy keane.....all of liverpools managers have been guilty not just kenny

    ReplyDelete
  60. That may be so, but it still doesn't change the fact that spending £55m on Downing and Carroll was negligent.

    ReplyDelete
  61. They trusted Kenny so do not know what your point is.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Yes, and I've highlighted every failed transfer under every manager since the site has been running.

    ReplyDelete
  63. liverpool4life5655:10 pm, August 13, 2013

When they've came out and said they are not going to sell? So your comment is totally wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  64. are you joking...they are multi millionare buisness men...i know nothing about NRL BUT IF I BOUGHT A CLUB IN AMERICA IT WOULD TAKE ME ABOUT 20MINS ON GOOGLE TO ASSESS WHAT PLAYERS AND WAGES ARE

    ReplyDelete
  65. And also I don't moan no reason to,you can twist it any way you like but I'm just highlighting what you seem to do a lot NEGATIVITY.
Jamie give me some positive views. Haha

    ReplyDelete
  66. rafa and kenny are different people ,how much wages is he on ,people say we should have signed some of the players man city bought we had a chance the fact that we could not offer them anywhere near as much wages ,would not have anything to do with it would it

    ReplyDelete
  67. liverpool4life5655:11 pm, August 13, 2013

Yeah good you learn alot from the google, don't you?... Not. As they saying goes you learn from your mistakes which they have. They hired comolli which back fired and they knew that.

    ReplyDelete
  70. when you going to do rodgers

    ReplyDelete
  71. LOL! Am reserving my frustration till the end of the transfer window. IF they don't sign more players I will support the team BUT I shall be picketing for the sale of the club!!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I do agree with you but just saying there is other ways to look at it aswell, as in life there is always 2 sides to a story.

    ReplyDelete
  73. i wish tika taka had stayed at swansea

    ReplyDelete
  74. Don't know where my post went?

I supported Dalglish throughout his 2nd spell. I was actually gutted when he left but will not deny that Carroll and Downing were both a complete and utter waste of cash.

  75. im just highlighting how easy it is to find

  78. im on a football forum but dont let me keep you lord sugar

    ReplyDelete
  79. The owners are far from blameless. Along with DC n KD they are all guilty. But, when Dalglish was appointed caretaker it all looked Rosy. So why wouldnt the owners have trusted him. Comolli was a horrific negotiator but Dalglish should have known better. He would have authorised all the player purchases. I have no doubt he wouldnt take players he was unhappy with and for that reason I think he is more culpable and created the most damage. The club should never have taken him back. He was always on a hiding to nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  80. liverpool4life5655:19 pm, August 13, 2013

You don't become a billionaire for no reason, takes hard graft, and being smart he has had a few bumps on the way but he learned from it, appointing KD and comolli was a big mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  81. liverpool4life5655:20 pm, August 13, 2013

We had the chance to sign mata, he dad came out and said he was interested but do we do? Sign downing.

    ReplyDelete
  82. It wasnt just a scot who theyd never met tho was it? It was club legend and who at the time looked liked the second coming during his caretaker period Kenny Dalglish. Why wouldnt they trust him?

    ReplyDelete
  83. trusted kenny ahaha are you having a giraffe hes a football manager not a hedge fun specialist

    ReplyDelete
  84. They gave him and Comolli 35 million to buy Carroll.

Sorry but you just do not understand.

Will you ever in you life see that amount of money?

    ReplyDelete
  85. bravo jamie nothing like bringing kennys purchase of carroll up to sitr the pot

    ReplyDelete
  86. ive seen borini and allen on the touchline with assadi does that count

    ReplyDelete
  87. Great answer!

    Care to try again?

    ReplyDelete
  88. A small bit of blame could be put on Rodgers for not using Carroll in the first half of last season. *Maybe* he could have got some use of Carroll in the first half of last season, as LP were short on strikers, and also Carroll was begining to show progress at the end of the season before. He might have lessened the loss by a few million - but didn`t try, and went without strikers.
Small mistake compared to initial blunder, but none the less a mistake on his part.

    ReplyDelete
  89. liverpool4life5655:31 pm, August 13, 2013

Allen and assaidi have done well when they've played. So your point is awful.

    ReplyDelete
  90. ive heard of ian rush but i wouldnt give him by bank account dteails

    ReplyDelete
  91. You are either a fool ,a retard,or having a brain the size of a pea.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Clearly not many people will have the chance to spend 35 million pounds in one go and if it is not your money then surely the people who have given it to you would do it in good faith?

    ReplyDelete
  93. Kenny have mention it before,he's the one who make the decision to get the players at all cost, while comoli is the negotiator.Damn..don't anyone read news anymore?

    ReplyDelete
  94. well you know the saying a fool and his money

    ReplyDelete
  95. sounds a bit naughty hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  96. so commli is a bad negotiator ...i hope hes not running the show if my plane to turkry is hijacked

    ReplyDelete
  97. Throw Adam into the equation KK 2nd tenure was a disaster, getting rid of the dross gets BR some credit added to the fact that he has bought better overall for a lot less. Jury still being out on Allen!
I can understand FSG's reluctance to cough up but we need to take calculated risks e.g Jackson Martinez to get back into title contention.

    ReplyDelete
  98. You're no LFC fan, you're just a KK fans but i'm glad cause we don't need a pea brain fan like you.Wonder where were kenny now lol.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Again pea brain tweeting

    ReplyDelete
  100. As comolli justified before, every club knew that we sold Torres for 50m and knew we had cash to spend. Newcastle or other clubs insisted on 15m less than Torres sale price. So technically to comolli they didn't lose money. Secondly, there was very little time in the window to replace Torres who left so suddenly. We can argue since there is no time then just don't buy anyone but that is hindsight. 3. Since clubs knew we had cash to spend. Of course we definitely could've used 35m to buy someone proven like for example someone like aguero etc, so the only blame on dalglish should be him believing in Carroll who was unproven and his insistence on signing British players. However we need to cut him some slack because of the lack of time to do a deal. Maybe they had other targets but clubs were not willing to sell during the January window because they also won't have time to replace their supposedly 35m star striker? Plus caroll was injured maybe thats why they were willing to sell. So, TORRES should take a bulk of the blame for trying to force through a move so late, he could've just left in the summer and we would have more time!!

    ReplyDelete
  101. "its not kennys fault" im actually going to stop reading your posts soon mate. where do you base that FSG told him you MUST spend money. and if you look trough history players Kenny has signed 80% or so are british, so you actually claim kenny didnt want to sign these players? or? England havent been producing top talent in years, and that is a -sad- fact. Wilshere and Sturridge are your shining beacons. Nobody twisted his arm and told him to pay ridiculous wages and fees for average players.

Kenny isnt perfect, in management, time left him behind 10 years ago.

He is still one of best footballers around ever imo though. and legend of a club im diehard fan of. but i dont go around making excuses.

FSG bailed us out of difficult spot financially, and gave kenny funds over 100mil shouldve lifted us from midtable to title contest. but alas it wasnt to be.

    ReplyDelete
  102. it really hurts wasting the money if we could get the money right we may be in the champions league they strategies was to get British talents which it was a complete failure we can why man city buys foreigners its about time to change their strategies

    ReplyDelete
  103. such a disaster we got in two finals won one and had the 3rd best defence in the leauge thats some disaster

    ReplyDelete
  104. and thats your idea of running a buisness

    ReplyDelete
  105. Rafa had a lot of players he wanted to bring but Hicks & Gillette game him nothing! Villa, Alves, Mata, Jovetic and the list goes on!
Dalglish had picked Downing over the per suit of Mata because he was a Brit! The funds were there at the same rate! As they say...
    20/20 is hindsight!

    ReplyDelete
  106. its was a verbal agreement

With the money spent it was a disaster,

    ReplyDelete
  108. eh jason. youve been in kenny's corner supporting him past 2 years while some of us including me have been favouring BR...

does this comment mean you are actually finally slating Kenny?

    ReplyDelete
  109. well rogers is on 70m and we armt in Europe haven't won anything and our best players are looking to jump ship so by what yard stick are you measuring success

    ReplyDelete
  110. are you actually angry cause rodgers is doing better job than kenny? i cant quite grasp where the negativity comes from when we are going upwards both with our football and our finances. Kenny had horrible terrible ammounts of money to spend comparing to BR and still he does better job than kenny

    ReplyDelete
  111. Actually I think if KD had one more season they might all perform better and we might be higher up the table, but we would never know that would we?

    ReplyDelete
  112. liverpool4life5655:58 pm, August 13, 2013

We are so far behind after gillet and hicks and then KK and comolli spending so much on rubbish that it's going to take time to get back were we was. And progress has been made under BR in the league which facts show.

    ReplyDelete
  113. You can add Adam and coates. Hendo and Jose, just about escape.

    ReplyDelete
  114. i forgot we finished one or two places higher

    ReplyDelete
  115. of those players mentioned and all players kenny signed i can see only hendo who is able to make long term impact in our club.

and i hope nobody drags suarez into it. 2 years is not long term impact, he is going.

    ReplyDelete
  116. he had a contract and they sacked him ...without good cause IMO...

    ReplyDelete
  117. Disagreed, in major scale.

    ReplyDelete
  118. The actual loss is far, far extensive. With this 55m (Add another 9m for Adam), 2/3 years back we could have bought at least 4 players of the caliber of Mata or Cazorla, which I am sure would have taken us to CL by now. Instead, we are at least 5 years behind.

These are the worst possible transfer business in the history of LFC, may be in EPL & I put the entire blame on KK. In any Club, Manager is the ultimate boss & even if for the sake of saying, we consider that DC selected the players, KK must have denied paying multiple times for garbage. At the end of the day, KK was responsible for the team & if a Manager thinks that paying 65m @ high salary for those 3 players was justified, no wonder he got sacked.

Before anyone pounces on me, KK was, is & 'll be my life time hero for what he has done for the club. But, after 2 decades of wilderness, when he was made Manager, I actually wasn't happy. His purchases were absolutely perfect for 70s & 80s, but with EPL riches, football landscape in England has changed. There are so many skillful European & Latin players in EPL (& managed by not Brit Managers with a different philosophy than hoof-ball) & KK got it wrong all together. I am sure, under Alerdice AC & SD 'll do much better, as the Manager 'll play to their strength.

Appointing KK was a mistake & allowing him to spend freely was another howler for the soccer ignorant Yanks - they went by the name of KK. Had they reappointed Rafa (Or someone like Gus Hiddinks, Ancellotti, Deschamps, Lui V Gaal) & trusted with that 100m+, I am sure, we would have seen a different LFC by now. In that regard, I put the blame on FSG as well.

But no way, DC can be blamed, in LFC no little known Frenchman Tom, Dick or Harry can overrule or impose on KK, no way.

  121. You cannot measure success on one season.

    ReplyDelete
  122. kennys my boyhood hero im not giving people a free reign to shoot him down

    ReplyDelete
  123. even if there is a good grounds to criticize him? cause he was once great manager and fantastic footballer, he is untouchable?

    ReplyDelete
  124. they did with kenny more or less

    ReplyDelete
  125. you forgot the no cups no europe part

    ReplyDelete
  126. What do you mean more or less? Who?

    ReplyDelete
  127. then why do you argue against facts/oppinnions simply on grounds that kennys history makes him untouchable to you. nobody is taking anything away of him as a legend, but you have to recognice facts, (and yes, im gonna pull even jason into this) i bet even mr.carr would agree as he says he is realist. and i recall you mentioning you being one in your posts aswell, i might be wrong though, (there is a big difference between realist and cynicist)

    ReplyDelete
  128. kenny got judged on one season

Season and a half, but at same time he put a squad back a few years by spending on rubbish.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Suarez cost Dalglish his job.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Sorry, but this is all a bunch of WHOGAS. It isn't even a topic worth discussing. All a bunch of woulda, coulda, shoulda speculation. We have a different team now and Saturday should be the focus.

    ReplyDelete
  133. its route into europe...im not sure our sponsors who pay fsg...and we all know how you defend fsgs money would take the same view

    ReplyDelete
  134. but it takes our minds off suarez

    ReplyDelete
  135. and it looks like hes going for a double

    ReplyDelete
  136. the history books will show kennys second tenure as not as bad as you thought

    ReplyDelete
  137. We had chances to sign Negredo and Martinez back then for as little as 8 and 9mill. Now these players are in the 20 and 30mill mark. We should have bought top class south American / European players when El Floppress left. Instead we wasted money on mediocre players such as Downing, Carroll, Adams, Henderson, Shelvey. Players that are not no where fit or good enough to wear the red shirt. I say cash in on the traitor cannibal 55mill, and bring in Eriksen, Willian, and Auderweld. With or without the goofey cannibal ARSEnal ain't gonna do jack sh**t!!

    ReplyDelete
  138. we are dragging are heels while it looks like spurs are jumping in for toby and ericksen

It will be bad because it will also have he splashed 35 million on AC 20 million on SD.

  141. liverpool4life5656:24 pm, August 13, 2013

Well under FSG our sponsors have increased, so they must still want to sponsor us. And winning a capital one cup doesn't change it,

    ReplyDelete
  142. They are not signing for Spurs. Sorry for you.

    ReplyDelete
  143. liverpool4life5656:26 pm, August 13, 2013

    Not funny...

    ReplyDelete
  144. LFC do not have to be in Europe to attract sponsors. Globally we have one of the biggest followings.

    ReplyDelete
  145. You are spot on with this article.
You could put the blame on the scouts. However now, there is much improvement with the scouting team that LFC might just as well become a scouting consultant since they like to "work behind the scenes" in view that any player that LFC is linked to, ends up signing for any other club but LFC. Not all game changing players put CL as a criteria for signing up, do they?

    ReplyDelete
  146. My mind is already off Suarez. I think we have the talent up front to compensate for his absence...which was going to be true for the first six games whether he stays or leaves. Who knows...we start out with 5-6 wins and maybe Suarez reassesses his commitment for another season. Where we are shaky is a big, strong, fast, mean defender which we really need now. There are these guys we keep getting linked to: Sakho, Cissokho, Papa, Alderweireld...but there's no SIGNING yet and we've got what...18 days until we have to sweat it out for the first half of the season? Just get one...two if affordable...and tie this up.

    ReplyDelete
  147. most history books dont mention transfer fees ..how many times do you here of veron and utd

    ReplyDelete
  148. i agree with most what you say. but i would steal go silently about and steals scouts from Porto and Celtic. they seem to do very astute business

    ReplyDelete
  149. expand please maxy boy you have lost me

    ReplyDelete
  150. As much as I respect Kenny, he was the one asking for these players. Downing and Carroll were his players. That's his responsibility. Comolli made it worst by paying over the odds and FSG sanctioned it. I think it's fair to say that everybody contributed to this mess especially Comolli and Kenny. Sorry Kenny.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Mmmmmm. Capital one cup will reign in my memory fornever! Lowest ever points total in the league, weak stance on racism added to the handshake palaver was "great" for us, wasted millions on below standard players!

    ReplyDelete
  152. I am sorry for you that you do not understand.

  157. Try to change the subject.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Yes, a terrible Catch-22. They players we need to get us to the CL won't sign because we're not in the CL.

    ReplyDelete
  159. not slating him at all i admit his faults ,but a lot of things said about him are unfair,i know he was not perfect but imo he would have done better last season than rodgers did ,(and some posters seem to think we can blame all rodgers failings on kenny in twenty years time, one will be remembered as one of the greatest players ever to pull on the red shirt one will be remembered as a manager who brung argubally the finest footballing side ever to grace anfield together ,and one will be remembered as a man of the people who helped the club through its darkest hours, and the other will be rodgers

    ReplyDelete
  160. totally agree m8 people have very short memories

    ReplyDelete
  161. it takes the heat of the shambols we are in now

    ReplyDelete
  162. again nail on the head,if it was based on results we would be looking for a new manager now

    ReplyDelete
  165. you seem to be well informed from the net hk ring any bells and i am still waiting for us to spend that 20/30 million you promised me

    ReplyDelete
  176. not the old racism card again sick to death of hearing this sh1te now ,did fsg try to ship suarez out last season did rodgers come out and say i would prefere for suarez to go

    ReplyDelete
  177. i think it was one of maxs famous snipes not funny but ,hes chuckling

    ReplyDelete
  178. All three are responsible. My order would be 1. Kenny Dalglish for even thinking/agreeing that Carroll, Downing and even Henderson where worth the money we payed for them 2. Damien Comolli for being the worst negotiator in the history of LFC you can even go as far as saying in the world of football 3. FSG for being so clueless about football when they first took over. They should have done there own research on these player and anyone with half a brain would have known the prices we payed where so over-priced you might as well have just given the money away.

Saying all that KD response was it's not about how much we payed for them it's about getting the targets he really wanted therefore in his mind the price was irrelevant. Big Mistake KD. I don't care if the Torres deal covered a lot of it. We still spent an awful amount of money on these players which can never be justified just as time as proved.

As for DC as soon as the negotiation got anywhere near the target we eventually payed for them he should have pulled out and told them to do one. If he ever gets a job as Director of football again well seriously that club needs to just look at what he did for us and give there head a wobble. Wouldn't surprise me if he has or does in this crazy world we call football. Don't really care to look to see what the hell he's doing.

FSG should really take most of the blame as it was them who finalized the deals, who put the trust in the wrong people and it was there lack of knowledge of football that they thought the prices payed where acceptable. On the other-hand and why i put them third is because they where doing what they thought was best for us. We as fans wanted KD back so they got the legend back. KD reputation as a player and a manager was to them all they needed to know and like Jamie said who could they trust?
