Benfica striker Oscar Cardozo is one of the many strikers currently linked with a possible summer move to Anfield, and according to his Agent, the transfer will be confirmed very soon. The question is, where will the Paraguayan end up?
Last week, Portuguese newspaper Jornal Record claimed that Liverpool are monitoring Cardozo, who is available again after a move to Fenerbahce broke down over the Turkish club failed to match Benfica's valuation.
Discussing the collapse of the transfer, Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim told reporters:
"Let's see if we can find a club that will pay €14.5m. Cardozo is a great player, but we have to consider the interests of the club, and see if there is a club who will pay €14.5m for a 30-year-old."
Speaking yesterday to Portuguese daily O Jogo, Pedro Aldave, Cardozo's Agent reiterated that a move will definitely happen this summer. He said:
"His [Cardozo's] transfer will certainly be finalised before July 17. He will not return to Benfica for pre-season".
This is not the first time Liverpool have tried to sign Cardozo, who was voted Paraguay's player of year in 2006 and 2009:
Jan 2013: UK press report that he is on Brendan Rodgers' wanted-list, but ruled out a move as he wanted to stay at Benfica.
Jul 2010: Portuguese newspaper Ultima Hora claimed that LFC intended to 'break the bank' to sign Cardozo, who at that point had scored 81 goals in three seasons.
Cardozo may be 30, but he has a formidable goal record:
- 161 goals in 260 games for Benfica.
- Averages 32 goals per season.
Rodgers may be interested, but it seems unlikely that FSG will sanction anything close to €14.5m for a 30-year old striker. Benfica are being way too optimistic with their valuation, and with the player determined to leave, they'll almost certainly have to take a lower offer.
If the price is lowered, could Cardozo be a possibility for Liverpool...?

to old
ReplyDeleteVery very doubtful...
ReplyDeleteNot a hope of him arriving, except on a free.
ReplyDeleteIf suarez goes Torres is on a 3man short list Dont know who the other 2 r yet
ReplyDeleteian ayre in disguise
ReplyDeleteCan't be us. Too old, too much money for a player that old. Doesn't fit in BR's preferred system or style of play.
ReplyDeleteI am waiting 4 confirmation but other 2 stickers is benteke & David villa
ReplyDeleteI think this is a fictional rumour. Some journo has made it up. Can't see us being linked to him. A few years ago, yes, but not now. He seems to be desperate to move on and may have remembered that once upon a time we were interested in him. The source of the rumour might be his agent.
ReplyDeletePlease not. Torres. The guy who was so keen to leave us that he handed in a transfer request hours before the end of the transfer window. The guy who sulked for at least half a season, putting himself above the club. The guy who's checking whether or not his hair still is in place about ten times a game. No thanks.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to see him in a different environment and seeing how he does, whether that be with us or some other team, as he is a interesting player. Fener guy maybe a bit sour with his comments but I would only go for him if he was cheaper.
ReplyDeletePretty mean-spirited comments about a player who scored a bagful of brilliant goal for the club.
ReplyDeleteI know he let us down by handing in a transfer request on last couple of hours remaining but I would take him or David villa cos with the chances we create they will take them really looking forward 2 the season 2 start now
ReplyDeleteOh I see, you have a special line inside the transfer committee. Please do tell, where are we with Mhkitaryan?
ReplyDeleteNot really. He didn't give 100% for a long time, sulked and strolled about with some disinterest. Only tried against Chelsea. Worked for him, he got his big money move.
ReplyDeleteCan't really argue with the first 2 points tho, third one fair enough
ReplyDeleteLooks like Jonjo on his way to Wales to sign for Swansea.... For 6 million good price :)
ReplyDeleteWhen we were originally linked with him I would have absolutely wanted him on our team. He's clinical and, IMO, has been one of the most underrated strikers in Europe. That being said, 30 isnt the new 20 and there's no way FSG will pay that.
ReplyDeleteWould be an interesting buy for a Newcastle or Cardiff tho (if reports are accurate) - defo deserves to play in the EPL before he hangs up his boots
In a recent interview on LFCTv, Carragher named his top 5 transfers in his time at the club. Number One on his list happened to be Torres. SELLING Torres that is....!!
ReplyDeleteCarra said getting rid of him was the best bit of business in his time at the club, and it also paved the way for Suarez (though I had always thought he was bought to PARTNER Torres...)
I always wanted Torres back until I saw that interview. There must have been more than meets the eye to his leaving - I certainly remember rumours of Carra and Stevie "picking" on him in the dressing room (for his lack of effort) and reducing him to tears.
He was also anonymous on Sunday night......
A journalist makes up a fictional transfer rumour about LFC????!!
ReplyDeleteWell, fnck me....
Villa never passes to Torres. There seems to be some bad blood there....
ReplyDeleteConsidering the fact that Mario Gomez is moving to Fiorentina for 10 mil EUR, I don't understand the point of us discussing the future of this 14.5 mil EUR, 30 year old player. More than likely he will not fit into the plans of FSG and BR, my opinion of course.
ReplyDeleteGomez for 10m euros to fiorentina!!!! Now that's a good deal and surely one we should be looking to hijack.
ReplyDeleteGomez up top with Henry, sturrdige, aspas, coutinho, alberto, sterling and hopefully Suarez playing around and off him.. and then when we need to we can have sturridge playing that role
Amazing, eh. And I have the audacity to consider the rumour at hand as made-up. Is this a capital sin?
ReplyDeleteThierry Henry will be 36 soon. He was a great player, but I can't see us signing him, at all.
ReplyDeleteNow, that's amazing. Just read the other day that Bayern want € 20m for him, and that would still be far less than they've paid. Seems as if there aren't too many interested parties.
ReplyDeleteTrue. He was unstoppable when rafa was in charge. I miss Torres.
ReplyDeleteLOL- 36??? how time has flown :)
ReplyDeleteI can only comment on his pedigree. He was still in South America until he was 24 and has since not progressed out of Portuguese football. Sure, the standard of football is not bad, but if he hasn't made it in a bigger league by the age of 30 do we really consider him good enough? For a smaller fee perhaps he'd make a good stop-gap striker but that's not really what we need.
ReplyDeleteCurrent press seems to have him going to Cardiff so I doubt we'll see our interest in him materialise. Hopefully he does well.
Next 24hours will b massive 4 us on mkhitaryan deal
ReplyDeleteI hope so. What are your feelings on his fee. Is he really worth more than either Torres or Suarez? Is he the kind of player to not only hit the ground running but also make a clear positive difference to the team?
ReplyDelete113 goals in 174 appearances ... it's amazing that he's not an established favourite at Bayern. What has he done wrong?
ReplyDeleteno chance! same as any top player, not going to Anfield.
ReplyDeleteWhy would we want Torres back? He is no where near as good as he once was.
ReplyDeleteMkhitaryan is a quality player his link up play is good & he always on the move different type of player than suarez & Torres
ReplyDeleteSo today is the day HM will sign, i can't wait to read it on twitter....again. Never trust the press, there are only a few people i listen to, one being the official LFC website. There is so much transfer speculation that it has become a full time job to read it all. I do love July really
ReplyDeleteHe's a super sub. They just have a lot more players that are better than how people perceive him. He would do well at us though
ReplyDeleteThey wouldn't sign Dempsey for less than that, so don't see them going for this one. Wouldn't want him either.
ReplyDeleteIf it's the official LFC site, then it's hardly a rumour, it' after the fact. Hardly faith is it? lol
ReplyDeleteI agree though, you can read articles which ay so many different things all at once, it's easy to get jaded
Thats the whole point, that it is a BS rumour and actual fact. this month can drive you crazy if you believe everything you read
ReplyDeleteNot Villa...please. He is past his prime. I was embarrassed for him in the recent cup. He looked lost on the field, scuffing easy shots wide and generally just wandering around the field.
ReplyDeletehe meant Henrikh Mkhitaryan
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, rumours are all we really have, no-one forces anybody to believe or disbelieve them, we all form our own opinions. At least our every move is not leaked to the press like last year..
ReplyDeletewell if we look at the 4 people we have signed, all 4 we in the press for days/weeks before we signed them
ReplyDeletenah...i dont see him coming...if FSG goes for experience, they wud have snapped Huntelaar when they had the chance and team him up with Suarez...
ReplyDeleteYes. Yes, please.
ReplyDeleteInteresting information. I don't subscribe to LFC TV.
ReplyDeleteYeah, well, I have had a feeling that he didn't want to be with us, it showed on the pitch. He gave us many nice memories, but he practically forced his way out, in an entirely different way than Suaréz. I couldn't tell which way I like less.
Well, you can take him to Juventus if you want him. He has scored a lot of good goals, important ones, too, but later in his Liverpool career he sulked on the pitch. That took a lot of respect away from him. And, as I've said, handing in a transfer request mere hours before the transfer window shuts. No thanks.
ReplyDeleteMay I also point out that the club has paid him handsomely to score those goals. It's not as if he did it out of altruism.
The guy who was so dead-sure about Mkhitaryan signing for us today will now claim that he meant that we would sell Shelvey today.
ReplyDeleteThe official LFC site has reported, not as a rumour, but as a fact, that we are after Cardozo? I completely missed that story.
ReplyDeleteI get jaded from all those false rumours, those with zero credibility. Some are closer to the truth, e.g. when we are actually interested in a player and made a bid.
I just don't get why every blog or LFC related website has to pick up every little piece of turd and turn it into a big story. Just like every other news outlet. One absolutely absurd rumour creates something like 25 headlines. It's not silly season, it's insane season.
ReplyDeleteSure, but some rumours are obviously made up. There are enough rumours about players we are actually interested in. There should be no need at all to jump on the manufactured ones, too.
ReplyDeleteAh, I see. Henrikh, not Henry.
ReplyDeleteTime flies indeed. A minute ago I dreamt of playing for Liverpool, and now most players could be my children.
ReplyDeleteI don't subscribe to it either - I get it free with Virgin. Shame really, because I wanted a free virgin if I signed up with Liverpool TV ;)
ReplyDeleteHe is feeling his way back after a long injury. He also seems to be constantly involved in a personal duel with Torres, so tries to do a bit too much on his own when playing for Spain.
ReplyDeleteAt the right price, I'd take him like a shot.
Or a Scouse taxi driver. They never lie .... !!!
ReplyDeleteThe bloody manager is younger than me, now. That IS scary!
ReplyDeleteYou on the right site, pal??? That's the kind of stuff they tend to write when someone is having a "private session".... (apparently).
ReplyDeleteHe's not too old - he's just too immobile and too expensive
ReplyDelete£50m for a clearly passed-it Torres WAS a ridiculously good bit of business :-D
ReplyDeleteImmediately reinvesting £35m on Carroll was equally ridiculous on the other end of the scale though... :-(
I was merely reporting what Carragher's views are, but I do agree that it now seems a huge waste of money.
ReplyDeleteAt the time though, I remember the news that Carroll was coming offset the huge amount of anger and frustration a lot of fans felt that Torres was going. Maybe the club felt that it was important to show that they were moving on, and were so anxious to appease the supporters that the actual size of the fee did not seem quite so important.
I know what you mean. I remember the summer I spent on tenterhooks awaiting the confirmation that Harry Kewell would sign......
ReplyDeletegulp!
I still dream i could play for them- Like for one season and we win 3 cups and everything i touch is gold. basically i want to re-live Gary Mac's spell at liverpool
ReplyDeleteVirgins are overrated. Zero experience (don't know what to do, those nice dirty things) and only last one night.
ReplyDeleteSame here, and scary indeed.
ReplyDeleteGary Mac was younger than I am right now when he joined us. I think I'd be the oldest ever player by now.
ReplyDeleteFootball and life are all about 'never say never' Would be cool if in 6 months time i am wearing a Liverpool shirt with 'Anteater' on the back after you score a hatrick against man-scum in a cup game
ReplyDeletewould love it!!!
Notorious English humor... Good one.
ReplyDeleteNow, that's a funny idea. You in a shirt with the name "Anteater" on it :-).
