In May, Ajax star Toby Alderweireld insisted that he would reject a move to Man City and suggested that he'd prefer a move to Liverpool, claiming that the Reds 'have the potential to return to the top'. Speculation over the Alderweireld's future continues to mount, and new reports suggest that Liverpool are close to agreeing a deal.
According to a report yesterday, Liverpool are in 'pole position' to sign the 24-year-old, following the Dutch team being given permission by FC Utrecht to talk to potential replacement Mike van der Hoorn".
When quizzed recently about speculation linking him with a move to Anfield, €10m-rated Alderweireld - who was crowned Ajax 'talent of the year' in 2010 - told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf:
"It's nice that you're named at clubs like that [Liverpool and Roma]. It strokes my ego. We have to wait and see which clubs become more concrete. In the following weeks we'll see what will happen. The transfer window is still open for a long time."
'He is gifted' - LFC favourites to sign 'extremely talented' €10m star.
Importantly for Liverpool, he added:
"It would be a bonus to play in the Champions League, but it's not a must"
In mid-April, €10m-rated Alderweireld told Dutch reporters:
"Usually I do not want to play for an English club that’s in mid-table, but, unlike Newcastle, Liverpool meet my criteria"
Then, in May, he told Nusport:
"I'm very selective in choosing my next club. I do not want to go to Manchester City because Kompany will play forever. Liverpool, however, has the potential to return to the top"
Ajax director of football Marc Overmars confirmed in March that Liverpool scouts are 'often present' at the Amsterdam Arena, so it's conceivable that Alderweireld and Eriksen could be major transfer targets.
In January, former Ajax boss Martin Jol outlined Alderweireld's qualities. He told reporters:
"Toby [is a] naturally gifted defender. [He is] extremely talented. He is a typical defender and is an excellent stopper. I saw him play twice during pre-season and I was convinced of his qualities. However, he is capable of so much more than just marking a striker out of the game. He is quite good on the ball as well and I see him as a future star player."
Brendan Rodgers recently stated that he wants 'winners' at LFC, and with three league titles in a row at Ajax, Alderweireld definitely fits that description. Additionally, Rodgers confirmed this week that he still plans to sign a 'few more players', including at least one defender.

"talent of the year 2010" says it all really. Liverpool are welcome to him.
ReplyDeleteyer ..liverpool will be quick to get him like mkhityran....SMH
ReplyDeleteJaime...i heard Norwich also in the line to sign him....is that true?....
ReplyDeleteToby or not Toby, that is the question!!
ReplyDeleteMarc Overmars confirmed norwich are basically in pole position , I will be immensely disappointed if we let him slip .. said years ago we should of signed kompany , then vermaleun and more recently vertonghan this lad is in there league .. I do however feel that we proudly not interested and that this is all transfer hype .. doubt we evan made a bid for henrich M aswell
ReplyDeleteBVB HAVE NOT agreed a deal for Mkhitarayan, the reports lastnight are not true. They offered 25m euro's which was rejected, the deal is still on for Liverpool if we really want to get the player!!!.
ReplyDeleteeven if the deal is still on the price is going up,
ReplyDeleteAgreed Jas but the deal is not done at all, check it out on Twitter the CEO has confirmed another bid has been rejected, they want a bidding war!!!
ReplyDeletewell thats us out then
ReplyDeleteThe deal is done mate, we have missed out again.
ReplyDeleteHad my faith in LFC's transfer machine dented with this news- HM seems a perfect fit, I don't mind so much if he chooses BVB because of CL football, but I will mind if we messed about with agreeing the fee. Suarez dependant after all?
ReplyDeleteI don`t know if thats a bad thing. I do like the player a lot, but the price was getting way over his value imo. For the same fee you could prob sign Eriksen and Diame. I`m not the biggest fan of Eriksen, but the example is there.
ReplyDeleteI don`t have a problem with FSG or Ayre making sure we don`t over pay by 7mil for a player, in fact thats what I want them to be doing. For 21.5mil there is better options. HM is a great player, but in that price range there are better.
does he bite? their product to us always does that physically or financially (babel) !
ReplyDeleteWould be great, if we could sign him. As long as it is only a rumour, we better take it with a pinch of salt.
ReplyDeleteThe way all those rumours about Mkhitaryan went, from interest, to no interest, from bid made to no contact at all, from being on his way to Liverpool to being spotted in Paris, I don't worry about all this. We may have never been interested. And would we like to have a player who goes AWOL, if he doesn't get his will?
ReplyDeleteThey guy doesn't want to play for a mid-table club, so why would he even consider joining Norwich. Will they compete for top 4 next season?
ReplyDeletePissed off! Don't trust liverpool with any decent transfer!
ReplyDeleteHow on earth did we screw up the Mkhitrayan transfer?! ..Cuz we dilly dallied!! Thats why! They were Hoping to sell Suarez first! Now we gonna have no Mkhitrayan (over 20 goals in less than 30 games!!) AND NO SUAREZ Either!!
What the fuck are they doing behind the scenes? Looking for more 12 year olds with "lots of potential" and fuck all else!??
Like who? Erikson!?
ReplyDeleteWith one year left on his contract you would assume that ajax definitely will be selling him and to whom they get the best offer.. of course toby would want to move to a top prem team but if no offers come I feel he will settle for norwich (will be a regular and will be at a more attractive league giving him a better chance to make that already impressive Belgium team.) which in the end could lead him to move on to an evan bigger club..
ReplyDeleteHow on earth did we manage to screw up the Mkhitrayan transfer?! ..Cuz we dilly dallied!! Thats why!
ReplyDeleteThey were Hoping to sell Suarez first! Now we gonna have no Mkhitrayan (over 20 goals in less than 30 games!!) AND NO SUAREZ Either!!
What the hell are they doing behind the scenes? Looking for more 12 year olds with "lots of potential" and nowt else!
I think the £25M is a big hindrance to his transfer,i don't believe FSG are willing to shell out that kind of money on one player ,i may be wrong but i sure do hope that is not the case.I still believe we won't be making any £20 M + signings anytime soon .
ReplyDeleteThere must be a good reason why Mkhitaryan has gone AWOL. The club and player obviously have fallen out about something.
ReplyDeleteThat something might have to do with Mkhitaryan apparently being set on only wanting to join LFC but Shakhtar want more than what LFC value him at. Why should we pay over the odds? We have been taken for idiots before i.e. Carroll, Downing etc. It is about time the club stood it's ground!
Even if BVB match Shakhtar's asking price, Mkhitaryan might reject moving to Germany. You never know, LFC might just be playing their cards very well and Mkhitaryan might be playing along with us. If that is the case then Shakhtar will have no choice but to eventually accept our offer that we initially made. There is still plenty of time to sign Mkhitaryan and if it is a case of him only wanting to join LFC then the ball is in our court. It will then just become a waiting game.
Who knows what is going to happen but something eventually has to give and will.
If he comes in, who does that mean he replaces?
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine we are going to spend that money to have him sit on the bench.
Rodgers will have his second and third choice targets. Let's be honest, no one here had heard of Mkhitaryan before the story broke in the media. There are plenty of good players out there for that kind of money.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. You don't want to get ripped off and you only want players here who have genuine motivation to play for us. But to be perfectly honest I think fans need to take it down a few levels and try to keep their excitement in check. It's like we believe everything that comes out in the papers and yet more than half of it is usually total nonsense.
ReplyDeleteExactly and that is why LFC do not want to budge on Mkhitaryans price. If we sign him we sign him. If we don't then we move on.
ReplyDeleteCoutinho and Sturridge combined cost 20 million.
Why the fans wants us to be spending 20-30 million on a player just to call it a marquee signing is beyond me and if the signing flops they will be blaming FSG and Rodgers for wasting money! It is baffling how some fans can't see the wood for the trees.
its not done till565 says it is;-)
ReplyDeleteErikson does not guarantee goals from midfield, and that is what BR is after.
ReplyDeletejust heard from a good sourse that reina is defo goin and suarez is stayin watch this space maybe that's why the move for hm has fell through no suarez money
ReplyDeleteI think we should sign him up as Toure cannot be played every game. I even heard that Martin Kelly is going to play as CB and I really want that too happen because he also has a lot of pace but then his injuries are the potholes. So, yeah we should get him in.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. While I have prob been one of MH`s biggest fans, I have always stated for the right price, which is 16mil imo. It was one of the strong points to the deal, now the fee is a lot greater I don`t see him as such a good deal. If we got him I would be happy, but there are other great players out there.
ReplyDeleteEriksen
ReplyDeletePayet
Reus
or
Gündoğan Although he doesn`t strictly speaking play in the same role.
Thats four players who would be cheaper in some cases and the same or a few mil more in others but are a lot better.
Can we get them? The first two I would say yes, the second two might be possible. Dortmund will have added a new AM, so one of the two I listed last will be on the bench, maybe they will face a move?
Thats just from top of my head, there is a fair amount more though.
true, and he isn`t my first choice, i was purely using as a example, hence stating EXAMPLE.
ReplyDeleteAs I've said, do we want a player who goes AWOL if he doesn't get his will? We've had in the past few years a player handing in a transfer request hours before the window shut, a player who publicly tells the world that he wants to move to Madrid, few years ago we had our then best striker not signing a new contract so we had to sell him on the cheap and before that McManaman leaving on a Bosman. Yeah, sure, what we still lack is a guy who goes AWOL if we tell him that he still has a contract.
ReplyDeleteHe can sign a new contract at Ajax then. Why make such a step down, and Norwich is a step down from Ajax. He can always move on from there and get more attention because he actually plays a few CL matches, too.
ReplyDeleteUnlikely , surely he would of signed already wouldnt wait till the last year of his contract .. he has made it clear that he wants to come to the prem and besides ajax have already signed his "replacement" and mate im not saying his celebrating his move to norwich im saying he would take it as a last resort if none of the bigger boys come ( norwich have made some ambitious signings btw ricky is an excellent deal) maybe his excited by there new project.. and yes ajax are in the champs leag but they won't compete and a full season in the prem weak in weak out putting top performances against the big boys will get you stardom (michu , benteke etc .. ) which is what he needs if he wants to be starting in that Belgium defence for the world cup.
ReplyDeleteMuch ado about nothing.
ReplyDeletei am so gutted when i read that we are missing out on HM. WTF! thought we had about 20 mil budget for summer In's. To date our net spend is 3 m pounds which includes JS. see transfermarket.com. cant see Reina staying i dont care what i hear from BR et al. Seems we have slowed to a stop in the market. what the hell is going on here. i figured HM was to entice LS to stay not swap. Just cant seem to get two top danger men up top- all though I did like what i saw from DS.
ReplyDeleteWell, I don't know, It surely would be a (or another) major transfer coup by Norwich.
ReplyDeleteFor sure it would be, I dont know why we are so delayed ! Should of snapped him up by now!
ReplyDeleteWe might have different transfer target. We might keep Skrtel and Coates. We might plan to move Kelly to the centre.
ReplyDeletegenuine LOL Johnny, " is this a danielagger i see before me"
ReplyDeleteThink we should loan coates out get regular playing time to see what he has got (young player of copa not to long ago) , having kelly as back up would do .. but still need another and BR said he is def bringing in a def !
ReplyDeleteYep, Coates out on loan seems to be a good idea, but we have absolutely no influence on that. Most of us agree that we should by a young central defender of real class, but again, it might not happen.
