Forget It: Prem giants reject LFC interest in 'excellent' £5m star. Loss...?

Another one bites the dust. Chelsea have rebuffed Liverpool's interest in promising left-back Ryan Bertrand.

Reports last week claimed that the Reds had made an 'enquiry' about the 23-year old defender, but according to The Guardian today:

"Chelsea have knocked back an inquiry from Liverpool over the potential availability of Ryan Bertrand, with the 23-year-old left-back seeking to take what opportunities he can with the Europa League winners".

When asked about the possibility of a transfer away from Stamford Bridge this summer, Bertrand made it emphatically clear that he's not interested. He told reporters yesterday:

"I want to be Chelsea's No1 left-back, and when that time comes it will happen. All I can do is be ready and keep playing, keep biding my time. I'm thinking of nothing else. I am just focusing on being No1, concentrating on progression in the games I get".

£5m-rated Bertrand - who signed a new 5-year deal with Chelsea in 2012 - is certainly highly regarded at Chelsea, especially by Blues legends John Terry and Frank Lampard. After the defender's Champions League debut against Bayern Munich last season, Terry enthused:

"Young Ryan was thrown in at the deep end, but he did really well. He is excellent and he didn't show his inexperience at all."

Lampard raved:

"He's clearly a player with a massive future. He's a 22-year-old with a Champions League medal who came in and did a great job for us, you can't ask for more".

This may be a dead deal, but Liverpool's interest in Bertrand makes perfect sense:

* The Reds are looking for another first-team left-back to compete with Jose Enrique
* Brendan Rodgers worked with Bertrand during his time as a coach at Chelsea.
* Rodgers also signed him on a season-long loan whilst at Reading.
* Bertrand made 51 starts at Reading, which shows Rodgers' faith in the player.

During one particular 2009 interview, Rodgers showered Bertrand with praise. GetReading:

"He’s going to be a top talent. He’s one of the few left-sided players who is good defensively and can go forward. I know what he can do and he’s 100-per-cent committed and is a big possibility for the future"

Well, if Bertrand goes on to achieves his potential, it seemingly won't be at Liverpool.

Quote: "What do you think they're smoking over there at the Emirates?"..........................

All of a sudden, Mr Henry has gone way up in my estimation. ;)

  2. but its ok for him to go in with daft offers, another case of double standards, although i do agree the offer is way to low ,but we set the get out clause, and imo he has sent out a clear message suarez is for sale we just want more money

I think that it's the "plus £1" that he's getting at. Arsenal are quite clearly taking the piss, and are under the impression there is a release clause - which there isn't.
LFC have said all along he's not for sale. It appears Pere Guardiola is trying to coerce Arsenal into bidding £40M+, and Arsenal in turn are attempting to manipulate a transfer.
There is still no evidence that Suarez has asked to leave - even though SKY continually report it as a FACT. I fncking hate those Murdoch-funded b@stards.....

Ps. Do you think us having a chinwag about Suarez on this article will wind up JK??? After all, he's gone to the trouble of writing an article about a non-starter transfer with Chelsea's LB........ ;)

  5. he is for sale but hopefully not to a prem team.

John Henry doesn't put offers in? Ayre does.... So your comment is invalid and false.

  7. i think there is a release clause and if it has been activated there is not a lot we can do about it ,as we would be breaking our contract, its all a case now if suarez wants to go to arsenal and if so sorting the fee out

    ReplyDelete
  8. so whys henry commenting on the suarez figure surly its up to ayre to decide based on your logic

  9. Not encouraging to be so swiftly knocked back but it's good to be making efforts to get players who are clearly valued. If you want good players you have to take them from other teams and often times you're going to get knocked back. Chelsea can offer him quite a bit, even if he does feel like he's not first choice. Another good sign that the scouting network are identifying quality players, but a bad sign that there is clearly a group of teams above us in England who are more attractive to a player even if it means not being a regular starter.

  10. what daft offers?

  11. liverpool4life5659:40 am, July 24, 2013

Because he owns the club? And he wants to keep Luis Suarez , same as BR and ayre. And how that even made sense? I was telling you a fact, Henry doesn't put in bids, ayre does, but on running of the club Henry has to know what happens. When that offer came in then ayre would be on the phone to Henry to tell him about it.

  12. nearly every player we have signed under rodgers we have gone in low and had to increase our bid ,dempsey was a prime eg thats why we did not sign him,no great loss,

    ReplyDelete
  13. no m8 ayre can only put in a bid sanctioned by the owner its a chain of command and when it involves many millions the top man sanctions or vetos it

    ReplyDelete
  14. liverpool4life5659:47 am, July 24, 2013

Owners do sign the deals off true, but BR can spend the money he given how is likes as you saw last season, 15 million Allen. 11 million borini.

    ReplyDelete
  15. wrong the commitee has to sanction it

  16. why the feck did we not take up 40£ +1 from arsenal from LS? Id rather have Soldado and Eriksen than Suarez

    ReplyDelete
  17. liverpool4life5659:52 am, July 24, 2013

But BR still has final say. They all have to agree :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. liverpool4life5659:53 am, July 24, 2013

Because we don't want to strengthen our top 4 rivals? Also 40 million is a insult of a offer for a player of LS qualitys.

    ReplyDelete
  19. i disagree. 40m is pretty realistical fee for LS. when taking in concideration his quality versus the "other stuff" not to mention he is missing 6 first games of the season. perhaps arsenal would strenghten with suarez in their side but we also are stronger with striker like Soldado and good attacking midfielder. than with suarez who misses 10 games a season due to bans.

our football was more fluent without suarez in team in the end of last season. when he is on we rotate the game too much trough him.

after all his yapping his mouth during summer, i think 40mill, we would be better off without him.

Agree..If im rich as owner i will rotten him playing with academy thru out his contract length hahahaa

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes because going in high has really worked out for us in the past....hasn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  22. has anyone ever heard of release clause that states! after ---million club has to concider transfer???!?

i think if there is a clause and liverpool is thinking that is what it states, we are soon to find ourselves in courts.

release clauses are there to buy off contracts. i doubt that experienced agent as Guardiola would mess up simple contract release clause.

    ReplyDelete
  23. it could well get messy our own fault for putting such a low release clause in the contract

    ReplyDelete
  24. i am not saying that ,if we are after a player that as a 25 million release clause eg HK we go in at 18 million, not a chance we are going to get him ,yet when arsenal put in a bid that matches suarez,s release clause john henry pokes fun at them,he wants it both ways and makes the club look stupid, one more thing if we sell suarez to arsenal can we stop all this arsenal are a selling club lark, because truthuly in our hearts we will all know who the real selling club is

    ReplyDelete
  25. Really? You'd rather have 2 unproven (In the prem) players than one who has excelled. Look, I'm not a big fan of Suarez as a character (I've often referred to him as a bit of a d*ck). However, any bozo can see that the guy is a fantastic footballer. Saying we should accept a fee like that for a player 10X the player Torres was when he left is just bizarre. I reckon he's worth at least what we got for Torres,

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thing is, we don't KNOW what the release clause is, or indeed if there is one. The guy literally signed an extension tail end of last season? IMO the whole clause thing is BS.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Not bad, I think Coutinho was a steal for around 8mil ;)

    ReplyDelete
  28. God, give it a rest already. You're just bitching and moaning for the hell of it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 100 mil? really? i dont know what chelsea was thinking when they bought torres for 50 mil when his value was closer to 30. you cannot hold it as a yardstick to any of our player sales.

if suarez actually has contract clause. i see this affair getting messy since he doesnt want to play for liverpool anymore. and i am only aware of one type of buy out clause in contracts, and it is BUY OUT clause.

proven player argument is shaky at best. plenty of proven players transfer within premierleague without reaching previous levels.

i think it has more to do with tactics deployed by team than to do with the league.

good players dont simply just turn bad players transferring from league to other.

there is plenty of players more suitable for LFC than suarez, not necesserily better players. but if we can get 40 mil from suarez and get a great striker ( Soldado is a great striker) and another AM in mould of coutinho. i think we are stronger AS A TEAM than with LS.

I can see how his stubborn arrogance is affecting fans already, i included. i stood by him biting and alleged racism row.

He is poison to morale of fans, annoys me to see him smiling in photos telling he is happy and loves liverpool fans while angling move to not real madrid, but for any club where he can get better salary and european action apparently.

I dont think a player like him improves morale of the squad either.

lets not poison the well anymore. 40 mill is more than plenty for LS. let someone else handle his BS.

    ReplyDelete
  30. i think sturridge was a steal.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think the mistake we're all making is using the term 'release clause'. As far as I'm aware, from comments made by BR, there is no release clause in Suarez' contract. He is to be made aware of offers over £40 million but even if someone offered £100 million it doesn't mean he would have to be sold.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I didn't say £100m, I said he's 10X the player Torres was when we sold him to Chelsea. What I said was that Suarez is worth at LEAST what we sold Torres for ...£50m. Suarez gets on really well with his team mates ...FACT. Everyone in the squad says what a great guy he is. Just because he's an idiot sometimes, don't discredit what he does on the pitch or with his colleagues. Also, and I know Jamie won't like this, but at the moment he's the best player we have. To sell him to a rival would be stupid. Everyone (including me) can say what they like about his cheating, biting etc. BUT he's the type of player that changes games, you know it LFC know it, Arsenal know it and so does the rest of the footballing world. If he was so dreadful, why do you think a club like Arsenal want him? Because it's very obvious they need someone like Suarez to boost them into a title and CL winning side. I'm sligtly getting fed up with this whole bandwagon of, lets slate Suarez, the guys an idiot...I repeat ...An idiot! BUT as fans we need to work out what we want, do we want a team full of goodie 2 shoes players that do everything by the book and keep winning f - all or do we want players with a bit of bi....fire in their belly. If we had more players with desire we wouldn't be in the situation where we've not won the PL and have put up a concerted challenge. Again, I'm not condoning anything Suarez has done, just getting slightly fed up with people getting high and mighty about him.

  33. I couldn't agree more with this post!

    ReplyDelete
  34. how can uoe say rodgers has the final say and they all have to agree on the same issue

    ReplyDelete
  35. the clause is forty million suarez.s agent knows what it is

    ReplyDelete
  36. why would you have a clause in your contract to be made a where someone as put a bid in ,if thats the case it could have been 1 million

    ReplyDelete
  37. And I guess you're mates with his agent and he told you this? lol

  40. Gents,
It feels like BR is more scattered and directionless very day someone we supposedly were tracking, interested in, or was on the radar, signs elsewhere. When u read why they signed, it often is about. Playing CL BUT many times they say the club really wanted them. Either all the names on this site we are 'interested in' are bunk or mgmt are scattered and not really showing players that they are a real priority in the clubs eyes. Many real scoreless are gone. See man city four signees....

    ReplyDelete
  41. If there was a release clause of the £40m he would be gone (Not officially as it takes time)but it'd be all over the news by now etc. as has been reported so many times yet you ignore it to go with the negative side the '£40m clause' is just to inform the player the bid has been made and gives the player to talk to the club.I love the way you can't spin the anti-FSG 'they'll sell him cheap and keep all the money' conspiracy. And if the club never actually got to even speak with HM what can they do? (Although I'm sceptical,I can see it being true)

  44. Never sell Suarez to prem enemies. Sell to Real Madrid, take the cash and sign Higuain, and use the rest for Soldado. move on......

    ReplyDelete
  45. It may very well be,but I'm not going to take that point of view.

    ReplyDelete
  46. 40m is probably realistic from a non-prem club. It doesn't seem like there's a big market to help drive up the price right now.

If it's going to be a prem club we sell him to, they will need to pay a premium. In my view, we shouldn't sell him to a prem club anyway.

Additionally, I don't think our team is better off without Suarez. His good qualities come with the bad... but at the end of the day he's still a top 5 striker in the entire world. At its most basic level, to say any team would be better off without one of the best players in the world cannot be true.

Would I have a problem selling him? Absolutely not. I think what he's done this summer has been disgraceful. But at the end of the day, he's still a top player, should command a large fee, and would hurt us immensely if he were playing for a domestic rival.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yes... it's called negotiating

    ReplyDelete
  48. "Considering the transfer" and "contractually obligated to inform the player of the bid" are two very different things.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Giving 60K a week wage to a squad player is not at all justified and there are even much more better options than him for 60K a week wage packet IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  50. im not too bothered about his cheating. since i dont agree with the term JK uses. according to way its thrown around every misdemeanor and rulebreak in football field is cheating also.

im bothered about his disregard of fans that has backed him and disrespect towards the club.

and if we can shift a player who can win us games but is banned one one sixth of season, and get two players who can also win us games but are able to play allmost whole season, with money from transfer. taking in concideration the financial structure we have to operate within. i can only see one smart solution.

and in my oppinnion as a fan im allowed to be pissed by his behaviour, no matter how high and mighty that might seem.

    ReplyDelete
  51. He said that because in the 40m + 1 pound bid, the 1 was for Stewart Downing!!
Surely an England international should command more than that!! ;)
