Boss confirms: 'Dangerous' €12m striker scouted by BR has 'three offers'. LFC...?

During the January transfer window, Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis, one of the most prolific goalscorers in France's Ligue One. At the time, Gomis admitted to being 'flattered' by LFC's interest, and this week, his Lyon have confirmed that four different clubs are vying for the striker's signature. Could Liverpool be one of them?

Speaking to French newspaper L'Equipe on Tuesday, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas said:

"We've had three offers [for Gomis] and we will probably be receive a fourth soon.

"The proposal on offer will make him the envy of many players. We look forward to his return from holidays to discuss. His agents will explain everything about the potential moves."

The Reds reportedly scouted Gomis last season, and according to a January report in the Daily Mail:

"Spurs and Liverpool have stepped up their hunt for Bafetimbi Gomis after the player's representatives flew to London for a meeting last week. His representatives saw both Spurs and Liverpool [Reps]"

When asked in December about speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool or Spurs, 27-year old Gomis told RTL Radio:

"You never know what can happen in football, we all realise that there are players who can be bought, but I want to finish the season here. After that it is true that there are championships that I like, where I would like to evolve"

Last season, €12m-rated Gomis - nicknamed the 'Baby Drogba' - scored a stunning 7-minute hat-trick in the Champions League against Dinamo Zagreb, the fastest treble ever recorded in the competition.

Marseille right-back Rod Fanni has gone toe-to-toe with Gomis many times over the years, and when asked recently to name the player he most feared at Lyon, he told Le10Sport:

"Bafétimbi Gomis. He is one of the best strikers in France, one of the most complete. He is very strong, he can score, and play well with partners. He is the complete striker, and is one of the most dangerous players of the team"

Gomis cost Lyon €13m in 2009, and his current contract expires in 2014, which puts him in a strong bargaining position, especially as he's integral to Lyon's success.

Brendan Rodgers confirmed yesterday that he still plans to sign 'a few more' players this summer, and suggested that his choices may depend on who leaves the club. If Luis Suarez is one of the players who ends up jumping ship, Liverpool will need a new striker.

Gomis - who grabbed 25 goals/assists in 35 starts last season - is definitely available, and if the Reds are not one of the four clubs who've made an offer, should Rodgers put in a bid...?

  1. I have never really been a fan of his. I'm not sure why. But if he could reproduce that kind of scoring record, I would welcome him!

  4. I think we should go for Luis Muriel irrespective of the fact that is Suarez stays or moves. I really don't think FSG gonna sign him because of his age but then who knows if they might. I want them to get Gomez or Remy rather than Gomis of course.

  5. if being the key word ,they are plenty of players in other lesser leagues with a better goalscoring record it dose not mean they can do it in the prem, and after our last two big money strikers from french league i would not risk a penny

  7. Never been that enamored with him but worth a punt at a low price. But bit of a strange situation, going by Aulas' comments as Gomis has been on the market for a while yet Gomis has been hesistant about leaving. They sold one of their youth prospects to Monaco for £4m+ and Aulas' has blamed Gomis's refusal to leave. Lyon need to sell as the new stadium is bit of a financial handicap. So they'd rather keep the young players and get the big earners like Gomis off the bill.

Aulas' confirmed Swansea were one of the clubs. Considering how the likes of Cardiff and Southampton seem to be aiming high for their status in terms of potential players, wouldn't surprise me if they were the others.

  10. Oh yea I completely agree IF is the word.
I would rather we sign someone else.

Who else did we sign from the French League?

  11. Would Teddy Sheringham at 40 do?

  12. Agree. Not really seen him but I'm wary of ending up with another Cisse which we don't need.

  13. I would much rather Gomez! Also Damiao, who is apparently about £18 million. I would like to see him in a Liverpool shirt!

  17. Might be another Cissé (Djibril). As long as the rumour comes from the Daily Mail, though, I am not at all worried, as they tend to scribble down as transfer rumours what they have seen after having too much alcohol.

  18. I think LUIS MURIEL would be a great signing for us.I remember a while back TIM VICKERY saying this boy was someone who has the potential to be a superstar. At the time i think he was playing for DEPORTIVO CALI as a winger but has been converted to a striker.
He had a very good season for UDINESE but is still very raw.Similar in style to RONALDO (Brazilian) with finishes that remind me a bit of HENRY.This is the signing we should make if SUAREZ leaves.

  19. I've watched LEANDRO DAMIAO about 10 times for the Brazilian national side.He strikes me as a player that doesn't involve himself in matches.
One of those players who you only know is on the pitch when the ball is in the back of the net. That's not necessarily a bad thing but i don't think BR likes that type of player.

  26. Diouf was amazing..........

  27. I was pretty impressed with him at the Olympics. He is a bit of a poacher. But he is pretty strong. I think he is a little like Sturridge, but where as Sturridge some times plays wide, Damiao doesn't.

He isn't capped much for the 1st team is he? He is only 23 so still has his best years ahead of him too.
The only thing I don't like about him, is he looks a bit like my neighbour, and I don't like my neighbour, lol.

  29. Got to be a dish out there he has had that he will confuse Gomis's first name with I reckon ;)

  30. looking at him you would think hes ate plenty

    ReplyDelete
  31. They'll sign him because he's French....looks like no one got it :(

    ReplyDelete
  32. He'd be a coup for LFC but then FSG won't sign him and I don't think he suits the passing and pressing game that BR is working at LFC on.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yeah, I hope that we do sign him but I'd be more happy if signed him rather than Borini last year.

    ReplyDelete
  34. and we will not be signing hk either

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think the reports linking him to Dortmund are not true after all. Dortmund is the second team I support after LFC because it is LFC who I've grown up watching but then I wouldn't BVB to sign LFC targets because I'd be really annoyed with them then. I don't know but I feel he will eventually come to us after the whole waiting game gets over.
